Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Greenbar printout DONE!
Here are the printers I fought at VCF: Anyone familiar with the Diablo? It powers up, is very clean but the print-head won't budge. I wonder if there is a lock-down for shipping or something I couldn't find... https://i.imgur.com/mZkjmcx.jpg <https://i.imgur.com/mZkjmcx.jpg> - Diablo https://i.imgur.com/CrcOmbA.jpg?1 <https://i.imgur.com/CrcOmbA.jpg?1> - okidata w error https://i.imgur.com/wdOMbpN.jpg <https://i.imgur.com/wdOMbpN.jpg> - okidata test print - it would print those few lines and then error.

Oh nice, a 630. I had one many years ago. I don't recall a locking mechanism. It's possible that the linear bearings for the head assembly have seized on the rails.

I believe that's a current model. Given the condition of the paper that's crammed into it, and the overall dirt everywhere, I would imagine a paper sensor or a head travel sensor has flagged the error. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA
I don’t think that had a hardware transit lock, other than as part of the shipping material. More often, the head is stuck from light rust or congealed lubricant. This was the case with my proprinter. Some carefully applied light percussive force was sufficient to free it. The I cleaned and lubed the rails with sewing machine oil. Did you try moving by hand with power off? Normally they will move with only some resistance when power is off. If not it may be dried oil like others said. There is debate on what if anything should be used on the rails.
Yes, this the print-head was stuck very much in one position. I'll have more time this weekend to take a deeper look and try to clean and lube it... The print wheel (the daisy wheel) did spin around... One thing to note- the alarm buzzer on this printer is louder than you would think.!. -andy

Be very careful when doing this, and if you must do it, only move it very slowly. Like any motor, the stepper motor that moves the head carriage will generate voltage when it's turned by hand. This often fries stepper motor drivers. Slower motion generates less voltage and is safer. I did this accidentally on my pick-and-place machine last year. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

I also recommend disconnecting the motor from the board. It should have a plug. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry@linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies
In the Proprinter manual that I read as a PDF and then lost, I believe it says not to lube the guide rail. This would make sense with paper dust. However given age and infrequent use, my thought is that a film of light oil on all the metal rails and spindles to prevent rust is worthwhile - you can always wipe away excess oil, but rust can be harder to remove. I used sewing machine oil and then a low-lint wipe to clean the excess plus whatever dirt the printhead scraped off. And I’ve been using Krytox PTFE grease sparingly for plastic-to-metal and plastic-to-plastic lube. (Exception on the Proprinter, you do /not/ lube the printhead leadscrew with anything.) Incidentally if anyone finds an IBM Proprinter XL / XL24 service manual PDF, send me the link because my Google-fu has failed to find something I KNOW I read not long ago. — Jameel
