Some kind of film crew posted on the IA page 20 minutes ago that "our awesome location" is in the VCFed museum. They posted a picture of our mainframe aisle with their stuff on top of our MOBIDIC display case, on top of the Prime, and TAPED to the front of George. None of this happened with any permission from us, nor even Fred giving us any heads-up about it. I called Dean. He said he's 8 minutes away. I told him to rush over, go directly to our space, and find out what the hell is going on. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan@vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

My back and forth with the group in question has been deleted from their page. I only got a screen shot of my first comments to them. The exchange where I tried to point out their disrespect for the items in the museum by putting their feet on them (one picture of girl leaning on UNIVAC which is still up) and their responses trying to justify their actions because they "gave a big check" to IA and "signed the release and were given permission" (along with my response that they obviously have no respect for museum items and took it beyond acceptable behavior) have all been deleted. I did not get screen shots before they were deleted (in the middle of our exchange it was removed before I hd even finished typing) I also made it clear my personal issues with their lack of respect had nothing to do with IA or Fred (they....Absynthia.... mentioned him by name) but was with their poor behavior and lack of respect for museum artifacts. Unfortunately that even deleted my comments from my own activity log so there's only my word as to what they said and how they tried to justify their actions. Tony Sent from my iPhone

Guys, Obviously I made a mistake by accidentally posting my comment in public. It was meant for the group leaders. I have a bunch more info, and I'd love to comment here, but a sudden burst of better judgment prevents me from doing so. :) Rest assured, we are taking this matter very seriously and addressing our concerns to IA management.

I realize you are all upset and good judgement should prevail in public discourse. However, I would appreciate it if you would continue to keep the list informed of the specifics of the matter, for a few reasons: * A number of folks on the list are participants in similar relationships with places like IA (perhaps not computing, but many things are set up like this, with shared spaces), and so learnings from this could be great benefit. (Was there some implicit permissions given by VCFed to IA to allow these things, and nobody noticed, sort of a "you can use the space, but everything here is subject to use by us for various activities"?) * Those who are not currently involved are still interested in the breakdown (if so) of communication, or the liabilities of co-locating with IA. That said, and while I think the music group (I assume that is what they are) seemed rather non-respectful of the equipment, it might be that IA resources told them they could do those things (unlikely, but so is this entire event, and here you are). Thus, those comments might be best to share in private until all can certify the truth. But, please, don't clam up now, at least not in sharing facts. I don't want to say anything that I will regret later.

IA has the right to open our room, turn the lights on, and show people artifacts. Nobody other than us is allowed to TOUCH artifacts.
That said, and while I think the music group (I assume that is what they are)
Nothing to do with music. They were filming some kind of movie.
it might be that IA resources told them they could do those things (unlikely, but so is this entire event, and here you are). Thus, those comments might be best to share in private until all can certify the truth.
I wasn't there and so I do not know what was said between IA and the film people. However, the film people posted on FB just now: "The cast and crew would like to express our gratitude to the The InfoAge Science History Learning Center and Museum and Fred Carl for allowing us into their facility to film several poignant scenes. Thank you for allowing us free reign in our set decorations and touching the buttons (the highlight of the cast's day!)" "Touching the buttons" concerns me. Those buttons are not IA's to allow anyone to touch. And what of the photo posted by the film people of their own people leaning on the Univac, including one photo of their people with a FOOT on the Univac? What of their photo showing a film prop abutting our analog computers? There is no such permission allowed in our lease. IA is allowed to open the room, turn on the lights, and let people walk around inside. That's it. I feel comfortable saying all that here because our lease is a matter of public record with Wall Township.

I feel the real issue here isn't the fact that they let them touch things and possibly damage our machines, which I feel is everyone's concerns from the current discussion... The REAL BIG ISSUE here is that what if them leaning on the Univac caused it to come tumbling down and injure or even, god forbid, KILL someone. Liability is the huge issue here... If someone was hurt who's fault would it be?? IA's fault for letting them touch everything, or our fault for possibly having an "un-safe" exhibit? I'd personally like to be thankful that no-one got hurt, that no damage appeared to have been shown to the artifacts. But this is a serious misjudgement on someone's part. While I feel whoever made the decision had the best intentions with the whole ordeal, I feel a LOT more thought should have been gone into this instead of just "Ah they probably won't break anything." Its not JUST the artifacts that could get broken! I don't feel any finger pointing needs to be done, but someone needs to think in the future about possible liabilities... I bet if that film crew asked if they could climb the satellite out front of camp Evan's they would say "No that's too dangerous and too much liability for us." But leaning on an old computer? "Ah its just a computer what could go wrong?"... A computer that weighs probably close to a TON. Trust me, I know what it feels like to move a big heavy computer around, its not safe or fun if something goes wrong! My 2cents, -Connor K
Conner made a good point, Liability is a two way street It's wise to mandate to IA mgmt all visitors are escorted and supervised by a docent[or equivalent] Not only do you face liability if the visitor gets injured, even possibly through actions of their own But any kind of entity that visits, such as them, should have liability too, in case they damage some priceless equipment Where a docent could have prevented either such incidents. Dan
Yes I have screen captures of my post and their response, before it was deleted and they banned me. If I was a rental equipment company, or an edit suite, I would think twice before renting gear or space to this group, if I saw something like this. Sent from my iPhone

So if read all of this correctly. VCF's room is the "bridge" of the ship Absynthia in this Steampunk fictional TV Show. Which means, the group that filmed this is expecting to go back and do this again.
Good luck with that one. On Thu, May 11, 2017 at 8:11 AM, Christian Liendo via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:
