Trade / wish list for the Feb 26th swap meet?
Hi everyone, new to the list - I'm hoping to make it to the swap meet on Feb 26th, and I'm wondering if folks have a few things I'm looking for... * AT&T 3b1 / 7300 / UnixPC hardware - looking for an actual 3b1, but also for boards and media. * AT&T 605 terminal(s) * Nothern Telecom Displayphone (hah, unlikely, but I want to toss it out there) * DEC terminals - specifically any VT2x+ terminals (Have several VT100's already) * DEC micro- hardware. Talking microvax, micropdp11, and Pro350 - specifically the 'under desk vertical cased' machines * DEC VK100 / GIGI terminal (a barco monitor with it would be amazing) More traditionally * TRS-80 Model III and Model 1 hardware * Non-bulky ascii terminals (altos terminals would be wonderful) And, because I'm the Handheld guy, any handheld computers. My wishlist / current collection is here: https://planet-geek.com/vintage-handheld-computers/ I have to offer: * Osbourne 1 * Kaypro 2, Kaypro 4, maybe a Kaypro 10? * Several HP calculators * Coleco Adam complete Looking forward to seeing folks... -d -- Dave Shevett shevett@pobox.com

It's great to see you here! Folks, I've known this guy since I was 16, and we were roomies for awhile. If anyone needs any leverage, I can provide stories. B-) -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA
You are in luck. I have a working (boots but not all the way into openBSD) MicroVax II in the BA-123 'under the desk' chassis I want to trade for some Lisa or SGI equipment. Maybe sell if I can't trade. It's stacked with ethernet, 12M RAM and like 10-12 serial ports on the back. Tape drive, sloppy drive and HD. I have a VT220 (the one that you connect to a CRT) and a another VT2xxx something I use on the MicroVax... If you are interested contact me off list and I'll bring it up to the swap meet, and can send some pictures. -andy

Interestingly, there are TWO KA630/M7606 (MicroVAX-II) processor boards in those pictures. Are they both installed in the machine? If so, that won't work.
I tried to do the PXE boot-thing for VAX but was never able to make it all work together. I don't know if the floppy or tape drive work, prb. need some TLC.
A VAX will never, ever boot via PXE. They can netboot via MOP, but setting that up is slightly fiddly. (but not too bad)

The drive in that machine is an RD54, aka Maxtor XT-2190. I think those things will probably live forever. ;) (as opposed to the RD53..) -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

No just one. I don't recall which. The other was part of another system.

Yes, I meant MOP - that is why i said "PXE boot-THING" - i know it's not PXE but it's like it....

OK, good to know. I sort of wanted an excuse to get the Gesswein, this was the only MFM system I have, so it got it :) Sometimes I'm more interested in the modern perhs. than the systems themselves.... -andy

Ah, ok. They look different, as they're different etch revisions, but they're interchangeable, and identical for all practical purposes. So, if you got them mixed up at one point, don't worry about it.

Perfectly reasonable. And RD54s are LOUD, as 5.25" drives go. For several years a few decades ago, I ran a MicroVAX-II in my bedroom. It was built in a hand-built, internal DEC prototype of the chassis that you have (BA123 "World Box"), that's much smaller, has only eight slots, and has a beautiful oak top. I still have that chassis here near my desk. (I actually have two of them, but one is missing its side cover) It had an RD54 in it, and when I moved from VMS to Ultrix, the midnight cron jobs, which involved quite a bit of disk activity, would wake me up after I'd been asleep for a little less than an hour. That was before I ditched working for suits and still had to get up at oh-God-thirty in the morning. Eventually I got used to it and was able to sleep through the chitter-chitter-buzz of the RD54. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

My dream was to get Ultrix on this MV. After the huge pita time i had getting it on just a Personal Decstation5000/25, and the MOP failures I sort of gave up. Now there is way to much SGI work in the time I have to do this, and I'll never do anything on this MV. So it gettin swapped! -andy

Doing net installs on DEC hardware is way too much hassle. Your best bet (for next time) is to beg/borrow/steal a Qbus SCSI host adapter, set it up as your first MSCP controller (772150), move your existing controller up to the secondary address (760334), boot from a CDROM on the Qbus SCSI adapter and do the install. Then, change /etc/fstab entries as required, shut down, move your first MSCP controller back down, pull the SCSI host adapter, and boot from your newly-created disk. It's not as bad as it sounds. I've done many installs this way. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

They also have a rubber bumper that can glue the heads in place. Its in an easier to access location to replace though still in the HDA.
Are you the Handheld guy that also exhibits the Handhelds at VCFE? If so, I donated some stuff to you back in 2019 East. Hi Andrew, yes, that's me! I think you mean a Palm TX, right? They were very nice. I may argue that the Clie NX60 was 'peak clie' - the 'star trek communicator' form factor with the keyboard on the lower half and the screen on top, reversible, etc - they were great (i have an NX60) The N810s were extremely nice. I have two N770's (here's my writeup on them: https://planet-geek.com/2019/08/16/vintagehandhelds/nokia-n770-linux-tablet/ ) but would love the N810 for the 'next step' I have a Zaurus SL5500, the 5600 IIRC isn't much different... they're wonderful machines. I was active in the Zaurus community (helped run the Zaurus Software Index). Having a linux machine in my hand that I could ssh into over wifi was amazing. Honestly, I'd be ecstatic to add your gear to my collection. I love bringing these machines to shows and letting people play around with how things were before iPhones took over the world :) On Sun, Jan 30, 2022 at 1:37 PM Andrew Diller <dillera@gmail.com> wrote:
