Random thought: VCF East clones exhibit
I'm not sure if this has been done, other than for specific brands (mainly Apple II/Mac): someone should make a whole exhibit (or arrange a team exhibit) exclusively for vintage clones (not modern replicas).
I had planned for something similar as a sub-exhibit for the 2021 IBM PC 40th anniversary exhibit, as they were significant to the development of that segment. On Wed, Aug 7, 2019 at 5:46 AM Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Certainly an IBM PC anniversary exhibit should include clones. But I'm thinking of a mother-of-all-clones exhibit, not tied to any milestone, and focusing exclusively on the clones. Other than Apple II, Mac, and the IBM PC: what other popular computers were cloned? Bill Deg. showed obscure TRS-80 clones last time. One could argue the IMSAI was a clone of the Altair. What else? (Sorry if I'm missing obvious ones: haven't been to sleep yet...) On Wed, Aug 7, 2019, 6:42 AM Dean Notarnicola <dnotarnicola@gmail.com> wrote:

MSX computers were cloned extensively. On Wed, Aug 7, 2019, 6:49 AM Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

It's an interesting question, especially if you exclude IBM, TRS-80/Tandy and Apple, as their market share made the effort to produce a clone worthwhile. As such, It's hard to think of true clones outside of the examples already given. S100 and MSX can be considered standards to be adhered to rather than "clones". There are examples of "work-alikes", such as the Tomy Tutor (of the TI/99; not a true clone), and I'm sure there are more whose names escape me right now. For $550 I would buy it.. Someone going to send it to me? Doubt it. $550 is good for an Apple II On Thu, Aug 8, 2019 at 1:27 PM Christopher Blackmon <ckblackm@yahoo.com> wrote:

PDP-8, PDP-11, VAX. The PDP-8 clones don't seem to show up so I don't have any. Haven't been looking for the others. You also have the extra dimension of US or foreign clone.
Good catch, David! I was limiting my thinking to micros. Of course there were DEC and IBM big iron clones. On Wed, Aug 7, 2019 at 7:22 AM David Gesswein via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

stuff over in Russia and other countries like that
True! Bill Lange gave us a Soviet clone of a BBC Micro. On Wed, Aug 7, 2019, 9:49 AM Ethan O'Toole <telmnstr@757.org> wrote:

Tandy 1000 series is a PCJr clone (but way better), yes PC but a slight branch (am I stretching?)

Actually, thinking a little more… Smoke Signal Broadcasting was also an SWTPc clone but… When does cloning stop and an industry start? When did ISA bus PCs stop being clones? Are all S-100 bus systems Altair clones? Is an Ithica Audio box an Altair clone because is has a front panel? Is a NorthStar Horizon not a clone? Bill S. I think this is more along the lines of S100 standards but that also defines clones. The basic idea behind SS50/SS50 was anyone's boards would work in anyones chassis. So the CPU boards were clones (some had some really interesting features like the DAT). Smoke Signal, Chieftan (?) not sure of others. I have a Heathkit/Zenith Z-150 It's a PC clone but the CPU, Memory and other functions where on cards like a S100 computer
