Unscientific informal keyboard poll...
We may be getting a proper server for the museum rack. It would replace the tablet-serving Pi and have other uses too. To save space, we'll get a combination keyboard/pointing device. But which kind of pointing device -- trackpad (laptop style) or trackball? My vote would be trackpad. Curious what you all think.
Trackpad. Trackballs mechanically unreliable long term. On Sun, Feb 4, 2018 at 1:00 PM Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

Good point. Trackballs are just upside-down mechanical mouses.
eh-hem, in the proverbial query of paleotechnology, of which came first, the Tackball came first the Mouse came much after so technically the Mouse is an upside Trackball ;) Dan -- _ ____ / \__/ Scotty, We Need More Power !! \_/ _\__ Aye, Cap'n, but we've only got 80 columns !!

Very good! I've said many times (and maybe wrote in my book -- I forget!) that mobile computing (clay tablets, abacus, quipu, etc.) came before non-mobile computing, so we should be calling mobile computers just regular computers, and we should be calling regular computers non-mobile computers. :)

Track pad. I like Logitech tack ball but there are too many modern features that are expecting the track pad (multi-touch, scrolling, etc.) that are now more touch based. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry@linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies
I prefer a trackball over a trackpad. Sent from my iPhone

Neither. This is a server, right? So what use does a pointing device have? You only need a keyboard. And, even then, only for emergencies, since under ordinary circumstances, you'd be able to connect to it over the network. So? This is a server. It's only going to be administered at the console very rarely, if ever. You really only need the keyboard and monitor to do the initial install. And it's not like a server has a graphical interface in the first place. The only reason anyone would *ever* need to be using the physical keyboard at the server console is if something is very wrong.
I have to agree with Ian. All servers are generally configured to be remotely controlled, allowing the remote mouse/touchpad/keyboard to be used. No need for extra components connected to the server outside of initial setup. Besides, having a mouse/keyboard connected to it draws undesired public attention. Go with a headless server which will remain inconspicuous. Only connect peripherals to it when absolutely needed. So ... two votes for no keyboard at all. Unfortunately that wasn't the question. :) Jeff S., to ease your concern: this will live behind a closed dark gray rack door, so it won't be seen.
Respectfully, this isn't a lights-out data center were talking about here. On Sun, Feb 4, 2018 at 2:26 PM Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

When things go very wrong, and you are trying to fix it, the last thing you need is to have to try to find a keyboard/display/mouse that fits and works. You want to be able to slide the tray out and be able to start work, not to be getting raised blood pressure and palpitations. I know the system isn't perhaps critical, but seeing something not working in a computer museum perhaps leaves a bad impression... Dave
Does the server have USB? If so, a combo keyboard /trackpad should do. No muss, no fuss. On Sun, Feb 4, 2018 at 3:17 PM Dave Wade via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

That too. :) It looks like we'll just sit the keyboard on top of another component because we do not have a sliding tray. We do have a a nice rack VESA bracket thanks to Martin, who said this morning that he is donating it. We will be using a small widescreen LCD that I'm donating. It takes up fewer u-height than the monitor Dean loaned us -- we'll no longer need that one with a regular server; that one was needed for the Pi but now we'll be back on standard VGA. I am hopeful of having it all set up ahead of VCF East.
I vote for trackball. Hi Folks, That rack shipped with an HP AZ884A KVM kit. This kit can be configured for USB or P22 interfaces. It was removed before handing it over to VCF Of this I am sure as I removed it from the rack myself. Google the part number - if this works, I can see if there are any available. Hi Folks,
That rack shipped with an HP AZ884A KVM kit.
From hpe.com: "The HPE LCD8500 1U Rackmount Console Kit is an ultra-dense, high-performance KVM console that combines a full 18.5-inch LCD monitor with keyboard and touch pad in a 1U form factor. The 1U rackmount form factor is designed to allow a KVM console switch to be mounted directly behind it." LOL * now * you tell us.
Google the part number - if this works, I can see if there are any available.
It would work fine, but it would make the VESA bracket moot!
