The extension means nothing. You could call it .DOGFART and it'd still function.
So what should such files be called? On 4 Jun 2017 07:16, "Brian Schenkenberger via vcf-midatlantic" < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

There's really not a standard for non-ISO9660 image files. You can use .img or .cdr, which both seem to be in common use. - Alex On Sun, Jun 4, 2017 at 10:43 AM, Dave Wade via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

All the VMS Images I have, even the ones from Digital have ".iso" extensions so I assume some software "barfs" at other extensions. When I started playing with VMS images I assumed they were ISO but quickly found out they are not, they are just block dumps of the filing system, and I believe if you have a Linux system you can just DD them to a partition and then mount under VMS. There is a vast collection of VAX images at vaxhaven.com again all as ".iso" files... Dave

Okay, so what is it? COBOL, FORTRAN or Assemble that cause you to use just 6 characters? ;-) -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry@linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies

I thought you'd appreciate that. Yes, I went through 6 character names also. Glad I don't have to do that anymore. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry@linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies
