The 400K drives are extremely well built.  I have some notes on getting a few working again in my blog.

The most common problem is that the grease dries up and freezes the mechanism.  My guess is that the second most common problem is due to people forcing the mechanism after the first problem occurs.  Cleaning the mech is something that anyone with a bit of mechanical aptitude should be able to handle.
