Jeff,
A few questions to help narrow things down first.
1. What format are the tapes, VHS, Video-8, Mini-DV, Etc?

2. What platform are you using Mac, Windows, Linux?

3. What are you looking to do with the video, make standard watchable DVD’s, Edit, Post on YouTube?

I can help steer you in the right direction. My day job is a video archivist who deals with tape from the 70’s to the 2010’s.
