Find out if it was printed in PLA or ABS. PLA can be easy to paint with the right acrylics, and perhaps some priming. Just use very thin layers to prevent painting away any fine details.
As for ABS, make sure the paints and primers are ABS safe, as ABS is prone to damage from certain paint solvents, especially if thinners are used to thin the paint or remove mistakes.
