Attention all: The museum's NeXT Cube needs the flash card rewritten so that it boots again. Who was the last person who got this done? Can you please do it again? Regards, Joe Giliberti
Not too sure, but this is the 3rd time the system has become inoperable because of a failed flash in the past 4 years. Either someone isn’t shutting it down properly or the swap keeps wearing out the cards.. Can we please put a NOS drive like a U320 with an interface adapter or invest in an SLC Industrial SD card for the SCSI2SD so the system doesn’t become a brick every year? I’d consider donating a drive if it’s that much of an issue for the museum to buy one. They are only about 15-20 bucks.. Thanks, Ian L. Wow! That's a really high failure rate. I'll bet someone buying cheap MLC flash. Buy good uSD cards from Mouser. Yes, you'll pay 4x the price, but they won't be fake and won't need replacing every time you turn around. -Dave On 6/11/26 20:32, Ian Litchfield via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

hasn't it been down for months?? Regardless, if I recall correctly, Doug Crawford was under the impression that Ian Primus had the image files. Thanks, Andrew Mattera

If someone can provide the preferred SKU, I can add a card to my next order. Will be on site the 27th and can bring it down, or ship it directly to IA if it's needed sooner Cheers! Martin On 6/11/2026 9:15 PM, Joseph Giliberti via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

I generally use SanDisk SDSDQED-008G-XI (8GB), SDSDQED-016G-XI (16GB), and SDSDQED-032G-XI (32GB). However, it looks like all three of these have switched to "non-stocked" at Mouser since I last ordered them. (!) I agree, I use the same brand and same capacities for vintage drive replacments. I have been happy with BlueSCSI drives. I recently replaced 4 cubes' drives. You can download images from the popular NeXT sites. Bill

I myself have not looked around for alternatives. The speed class isn't really relevant here; what you need is single-level cell (SLC). Swissbit also makes very good industrial cards. I would also trust Apacer, though I've not used their SD/uSD cards in particular. -Dave On 6/19/26 18:33, Martin A Flynn via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

Can we burn a DVD-R with the images and stick it physically inside the NeXTCube or something? I’d suggest a USB flash drive but retention can be an issue with these. I’ve personally had good results with the Sandisk Max Endurance and Samsung Pro Endurance cards that are meant for security and dash cameras. These are not quite as good as the industrial cards though, and likely won’t be better at long term retention if that’s the issue. That said, if the card works fine after a zero-wipe with dd or ddrescue followed by a reimage, then your issue is likely filesystem corruption due to improper shutdown or retention problems due to sitting powered off for too long, not card wear. An industrial card will not help you if the issue is filesystem corruption due to improper shutdown. An SLC card likely will help with long term retention, but I haven’t tested this myself. David R.

NeXTSTEP is very swappy on even a fully-loaded-with-RAM machine. I'd test the card, but don't have high hopes. -Dave On 6/19/26 19:14, David Ryskalczyk wrote:

I myself have not looked around for alternatives. The speed class isn't really relevant here; what you need is single-level cell (SLC).
Swissbit also makes very good industrial cards. I would also trust Apacer, though I've not used their SD/uSD cards in particular.

I generally use SanDisk SDSDQED-008G-XI (8GB), SDSDQED-016G-XI (16GB), and SDSDQED-032G-XI (32GB). However, it looks like all three of these have switched to "non-stocked" at Mouser since I last ordered them. (!)
Remember that oversizing these will also increase their useful life due to wear leveling.
