I don't recall any service with the name Dataphone but I didn't do AT&T data services until the late 1980's/1990s. I recall seeing X25 switches and various DSUs with Dataphone. At&t Dataphone - Modem or "Service"?
by Jeff G 06 Aug '19

06 Aug '19

Long story short, back in my youth I hung out at a recycling center that was processing a lot of scrap from At&t and Western Electric in the 80s and 90s. A lot of what they got at one point was "dataphone" stuff. I was under the impression that "dataphone" was a service, since the equipment I remember seeing were server racks completely full of smaller black and silver boxes that had a DB25 on them and power. Knowing what I know now, I realize those were likely modems and may have even been a bridge to some other platform or system. So does anyone know - was "dataphone" the name for the modems and just a normal leased line, or was there a specific service or type of line called dataphone? I've seen references to both, but I think in regards to service they just used the same brand name for both the hardware as well as their leased lines. On the same front - if it was just a normal leased-line system, is it possible to use a crossover cable to have 2 different 4-wire leased line modems talk to each other? These are the things that keep me awake at 3am. ;-) Jeff (aka Bags)

Everyone, Thank you for all the suggestions. Over the weekend I was able to hunt down a PDF version of the original service manual. I'm still looking for other schematics. I'm happy for the review of Texelec I had found others recommending them as well and that's who I used. I'm just not crafty enough to make my own. Although a scope has been on my wish list for quiet some time I've never had the pleasure of owning one or even using one before. Maybe I'll get a chance to see one in use. Thanks again, Doug P.

Now back to reality..... I will go through everything I picked up from Bob, make a list, give VCF whatever It wants, pick the few things I would like to keep, then offer everything else to the list here. The special Ace 100 automatically goes to the museum, and the Red Lightning prototype will be in mine (and on display at VCF when I do my “Return of the Clones” display next year or the year after) Be a few days before I can go through everything since Monday is my only day off from work. Free stuff in Medford, NJ, mostly Apple
by Bob Applegate 05 Aug '19

05 Aug '19

As some of you know, I’m fighting Leukemia and have promised my wife to clean out some of the stuff in my collection that I’ll probably never use again, so I’m offering it to the group for free. As some of you also know, I was an early emplyee at Franklin Computer Corporation and maintained a friendship with one of the founders. A few years ago he asked if I could take some of his software collection and find a home for it. Joel worked a lot of deals and got some early releases of code for possible inclusion in Franklin products. Some of these items might never have been released, others might be very common. I started pulling boxes to attemp an inventory, but there’s just too much stuff. Let’s just say there are at least four boxes of Apple II era software. One of the cooler finds was original documentation (in padded binders) and disks for the Microsoft Softcard. I did not see the Z80 card but it might be in one of the boxes. One unique item is a Lazer 128 with a history. Joel had met with the President of Lazer at one point and they exchanged their current products. Ie, a Franklin was given to Lazer, and a Lazer 128 was given to Franklin. I have that Lazer and it’s part of the package. If you’re into collecting Apple clones, this machine is unique. I also have a Commodore 1541. Supposedly worked when I got it, never used it myself. There is some sort of Apple compatible plotter on a shelf here. If that looks interesting, it’s yours too. Constraints: * The Lazer was given tto me, so I’d really prefer a collector take it, NOT see if on eBay, but I obviously can;t control this. * I have not driven since May so I can not meet you someplace. Pickup is in Medford NJ. I will not ship this; very heavy. * The good part is I’m home all day so can work around your schedule for pick-up. * I’d prefer one person take all, but am open to breaking things up. If you’re interested, email me off-list. Anything not gone in a few weeks will just get thrown away. Bob

The > page says it may had a little better implementation than some with the > concurrent processing. There were a number of microcomputers in the early 1980's, which incorporated both an 8085 and an 8088, or a Z80 and an 8088. The Heath/Zenith Z-100 (Z-121) switched between an 8085 or an 8088. The Compupro 8/16 used an 8085/8088 S-100 CPU card, similar circuits. I believe NorthStar had an 8088 board option for their Z80 based Advantage (non-S-100 computer). There are other examples. Likewise, some MS-DOS computers ran an ISA bus Z80 card (Baby Blue, etc.). Why do this? Because of the rise of MS-DOS during the age of CP/M-80. Keep in mind that through the late 1970s and into the 1980's, CP/M-80 was the leading Intel-compatible operating system. These 8088 options were ways to provide some kind of compatibility and future-support, for MS-DOS products and for "Big Blue" IBM. The Z80 cards for IBM PC's, was a way to run legacy software - until PCs were fast enough to emulate CP/M-80. It's a period of time that's becoming harder to appreciate; it's not in the experience of persons now under 40 or so. It doesn't fall nicely into one "IBM-PC, CP/M, Mac, videogame" category. Repair Workshop
by Douglas Perry 03 Aug '19

03 Aug '19

Excuse me if I'm coming off a bit over eager. Now that I'm signed up for this months workshop I was hoping to get some tips on how to properly prepare (supplies needed, ect..) I'm bringing a Compaq Portable which has only been owned by my family. It was stored in a guest room of a finished basement since 1993. Not sure where they kept it before that. I testing I've done so far is to simply plug it in and turn it on (after giving it a week in a temp/humidity controlled room). The PSU and fan came to life nicely, the CRT is making a familiar hum but I get nothing on the screen not even a blinking cursor. I'm not sure if I should expect an error with no disk? I also don't hear any drive noise.(I have no disks) I have a fairly decent toolkit for repairing current machines, as well as a soldering iron, and multimeter. >From my research I'm going to go ahead and assume the capacative pads for for the keyboard are bad and just order a new set. I've searched fairly well and have not found a reputable place to buy a 5.25 floppy pre-loaded with MS-DOS 3.3 (which sounds like the best option). So after that ramble here are my questions. Is there anything else you all would recommend me bringing? When is the best time show up? Is there anything else I should know or be doing to get ready? Thanks, Doug P.

Z180 questions
by Neil Cherry 01 Aug '19

01 Aug '19

Yes this is vintage. I have a large number of Z180 (HCS II boards) from Steve Ciarcia they were designed to be used for the HCS II home automation system. I think they might make decent CP/M boards (up to 33MHz perhaps) with a little hackery. Heck I might even figure out how to use the full 1M of memory space. But I'm not sure how to interface slower components (like a PIO) to the faster processor. Any pointers? BTW, I have the source to the HCS II asm so I will be looking there and I do have the z180 sheets. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies

As a new member to the group I was told I should take a minute and introduce myself. My name is Doug and although my heart will always be with New Jersey I currently reside in Fairless Hills, PA. I found this group while researching parts for a Compaq Portable 1. It was the first computer I ever saw code on (at 8 years old) and I honestly had thought it had been sold in a yard sale many years ago. I quickly read about VCF and was disappointed to see that I missed this years amazing lecture with Ken Thompson (which I immediately watched online). My background in computers is a bit scattered but my education is in Software Engineering. Currently, I help maintain and develop a rather extensive Filemaker database. I look forward to getting down to visit the museum and I'm very interested in signing up for the next repair workshop. Pleased to meet you all, Doug P.

We rearranged some Apple III and Mac items. But the highlight today was that we cleared an entire aisle of random unsorted "stuff". :) We also established three pallets for future use: one is "stuff for the dumpster", one is "hardware to sell", and one is "book/magazines/etc. to sell". We'll empty the dumpster pallet every time it gets full. We'll make the "to sell" pallets available at all events.

Wanted: 8 matching 4:3 composite LCD screens
by Evan Koblentz 27 Jul '19

This is a difficult request to fill. We want to hang composite TVs/monitors from the museum ceiling so we can demo the computers on the top shelves (can't use regular monitors because of the slanted shelves). We do not want to use composite-to-VGA adapters because they produce poor image quality. Can anyone help us procure 8 identical LCDs with composite input and with 4:3 displays? Meanwhile, somehow we collected around a dozen small/medium VGA LCD monitors through the years. We don't need most of those. We'll test them and make them available at upcoming workshops.

The museum was very busy yesterday and today. Dozens of families came for tours. Our building has the best air conditioning on the InfoAge campus, and it was too hot for the beach, so I'm sure that those factors had a lot to do with it! Side project: I updated the content on our information kiosk. Now (I hope) it's more clear to visitors that they are supposed to touch it.

The museum was very busy today. Most of Wall Township is still experiencing a power outage from Monday night's storm, so I posted on the town Facebook page, "InfoAge is open. We have air conditioning and power. Come visit!" ... it seemed to work. :) About 30 people visited today. Mike R. stopped by too. He picked up some items Tony left for him. The power outage had a minor impact on VCF: 1. Everything came right back up when IA's main power was restored yesterday -- except for our info kiosk and our hotspot. I rebooted those manually. After that I was able to access our intranet (kiosk and admin pages), but I wasn't able to get onto the Internet with either a wired or wireless connection. I know the problem wasn't our access point, because the wired connection didn't worth either, and I knew it wasn't the switch, because as I said intranet access worked. That left only the firewall, so I rebooted it and then we were in business. The firewall is PFsense. Does anyone know why I had to restart it, rather than it automatically working after the hotspot was back on? 2. Part of a large tree came down outside of our building. It didn't hit the building, but it was scary-close! IA said the town public works dept. will come take care of it in a few days. I put cones around the area so nobody walks under it.

For once something on eBay that is actually "very rare" and the price is quite reasonable if bidding doesn't drive it too high. I believe this version of 1-2-3 executes "in place" within the ROMs rather than being copied into conventional RAM which should allow a larger spreadsheet than is possible on a conventional PC (ignoring expanded/extended memory). If you are a PCjr collector, this is one of the holy grails of jr collecting. I would definitely be interested in the TI 99 stuff since I just picked one up myself not to long ago in really good condition. I don't have any other peripherals so the "voice module" would really be nice If you are not keeping it. All, just had a friend drop off some TI/99 machines, cassettes, cartridges etc. I’m going to pick through for the couple things I want (which is not much, just want a a cpu and sampling of stuff) and the rest I will make available to anyone interested. Obviously if there’s something VCF could use for the museum VCF gets first crack. My friend knows most of this isn’t worth much dollar wise but if there’s something thats worth more than $10 then a minimal “donation” would be appreciated. He used to work on my boats, is retired and he and his wife are downsizing to a new home nearby and need to unload some excess stuff! I’ll get pictures tonight and post where they can be viewed by anyone interested. Just figured I’d see if there was any interest at all. A couple machines that were never or barely used, just taken out of box. I know there’s a voice synthesizer, expansion box, couple other items and maybe a couple dozen carts in original box. Nothing to call the media about :-) Tony Sent from my iPhone

July Workshop Info
by Jeffrey Brace 20 Jul '19

20 Jul '19

As a reminder the workshop is $10 *per* person, *per* day. Sorry this is InfoAge's rule and not our decision. So that means for two days it is $20. Sign up quickly to guarantee a table. DATE: July 20 & 21 LOCATION: InfoAge Building 9059 (CDL Hackerspace) - (2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township, NJ) TIME: Start about 10 A.M. on Saturday and ends whenever we go to sleep. End about 5 P.M. on Sunday. (Starts around 10 A.M. Sunday morning) SIGNUP: < https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WC20hnriY5alKGteeWoWq5jXT3ZOjzA6h-u… > COST: - $10 per person, PER day. This is required by InfoAge for us to pay for renting the space. - $25 for those wanting to stay overnight (Money goes to InfoAge). Please pay Evan when you get there so that he doesn't forget. I won't be at this workshop and will be out of state. Evan gets all the blame, and I get all the praise. Credit cards accepted. I will be using VCF's PayPal Here tablet with bluetooth credit card machine. OVERNIGHT: Bring your own pillow, blankets, soap etc. We provide a bed frame and an uncovered mattress. There are showers and a kitchen for your use. - You can pay via PayPal to paypal(a)vcfed.org. or to Evan via cash or credit card in person. EQUIPMENT: - VCF will provide a table and you can use any available electrical outlet. - Bring your own tools, power strips, power cords, and supplies etc. - If you need particular tools that you don't know or particular parts, please post to the list for those going. They may have what you need. Let them know ahead of time. - Please bring an extra one or two power cords as these are often forgotten by people. DRINKS: You should bring your own. I would recommend bringing a cooler of some type. FOOD: Bring your own, but we will usually order pizza or go out to eat for dinner. If Evan feels like it he will bring out the grill and cook some burgers. GATE: During the hours from 1 pm to 5 pm close the front gate behind you. We want museum visitors to go to the front lobby and not wander through the middle of the campus. Outside of those times, you can feel free to leave the gate open. PARKING: Park in the main parking lot, unless you are unloading in front of 9059. InfoAge doesn't like us parking on the lawn anymore. QUESTIONS? Contact Evan : 646 - 546 - 9999 <646-546-9999> or evan @ vcfed.org <evan(a)vcfed.org> Have fun everyone! -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 20 Jul '19

20 Jul '19

Today went pretty much as expected. Drom and Duane did their UNIVAC work (yesterday, too). Adam and I worked in the warehouse. We sorted more books/magazines, relocated all of the monitors/TVs, moved some IBM hardware, did some miscellaneous cleaning up, and moved some old display fixtures one step closer to the landfill. We will do more work next Friday: we're planning on relocating all of the NeXT hardware, shelving the rest of the monitors/TVs, making one shelf for Ohio Scientific stuff, and creating new shelving units for Intel MDS items + maybe for networking items. We all went to dinner ... afterward Adam went home, Drom/Duane continued their stuff, and I worked on improving the content of the museum info kiosk.

OT: Odd packages getting sent to me
by Neil Cherry 19 Jul '19

19 Jul '19

I'm hoping someone might give me some ideas. I've been getting odd packages from China and India, Tiny packages containeing things like tiny tinkerbell (smaller than peanut), nail clippers (but actually stickers - that's happened twice). And a larger, heavier package today I got this cheap a** walking stick with a telescope (really bad optics not even fully ground). Anyway, the walking stick was sent via DHL from Sara International (India -> UK -> US). I've save all the packages and they have no direct connection to anything I've ordered. Google has come up blank on any of the names involved. I'm going to see if my credit had been affected. Any ideas? Any pointers. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies
