OT: 13” 2011 MacBook Air for sale
by corey cohen 18 Jul '19

18 Jul '19

My son just got a new MacBook Pro so we are selling his old MacBook Air. The one for sale is a 2011 MacBook Air that was special ordered with 256gb of internal SSD, 1.8ghz i7 CPU, 4gb of RAM. This was the top of the line MacBook Air you could buy at the time. We also have the original box,Apple USB Ethernet adapter and a spare Apple MagSafe power supply. So two included power supplies. The battery was also replaced last summer. Email me directly with an offer... I’d prefer to not sell on eBay and could even drop it off at the workshop this weekend at InfoAge. Museum report

18 Jul '19

Moderate number of visitors today. One visitor insisted that he bought an IBM PC in 1979. :) I politely explained that it debuted in 1981, but he was adamant about it. He offered to bet me, as if he'd Google it and prove me wrong ... I was tempted to ask how much is in his bank account! Today's best visitor was an 11-year-old who said he codes in JavaScript and Python. Bill I. stopped by to do some preliminary evaluation of the EAI TR-20 that we got last month. It has some parts that he can use to get our other '20 running, including an EAI-branded digital volt meter. Among the EAI documentation, Bill found an unrelated CD that contains an important file which I misplaced several years ago! This time I uploaded the file to Google Drive or safe keeping. I also made some tweaks to our museum network to keep it secure. The new hotspot was set to allow 10 simultaneous connections, but it only needs one connection (to a wifi/Ethernet bridge) into our firewall and the rest of the network. So I changed that value to one; thus even with the credentials nobody can get on that network. No need for any extras, right?

fly me to the moon ... (50th anniversary)
by Herb Johnson 16 Jul '19

16 Jul '19

So: where can I find more information, about the "maybe in Phila?" display of the restored AGC? I asked the Google. http://rescue1130.blogspot.com appears to be a running account of AGC restoration activity, by Carl Claunch, who is apparently involved. Otherwise, I could not readily find by Web search, another specific Web page or blog, that was an "authoritative" means to know what's going on with that restoration (or where it might be demonstrated). Any Web search for the Apollo AGC is saturated with all the replicas that are in construction now, and in the past; and links to those discussions, links to the links, etc. Plus discussions about the AGC and the Apollo program, etc. I checked the Computer History Museum Web site; Evan mentioned some connection. A search there, shows they have a AGC artifact, a prototype. No references to activities involving it or other AGC's, but 9300 search hits found on the Web site. The link to the CHM blog, on their home page, is broken. Of course, I may be asking about something that doesn't exist - a central Web site or even blog, about this artifact. Maybe it has its own Twitter feed, for all I know - I avoid the stuff myself. This kind of "diaspora" appears normal, seems to me, for what used to be called "the Web". regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Moderate amount of visitors today (and yesterday). Some beach tourists, some locals. Neil stopped by today and got our new hotspot connected to our network, via the wireless-to-ethernet bridge from Dean. Neil had to change some network settings because the bridge wanted to use the same stuff as our firewall. After that (and after drawing a network map to visualize it all), the rest of the job was smooth sailing. So now we're back online, and supposedly this is a more reliable Internet connection than we had with the old Netgear modem. Jeff Brace and I will keep an eye on it. I am skeptical that a hotspot can run 24/7 but we'll see. Evan Koblentz Executive Director, Vintage Computer Federation evan(a)vcfed.org / (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org @vcfederation

Kfest
by Tony Bogan 11 Jul '19

11 Jul '19

All, the original plan for getting stuff out to Kfest to help keep the garage giveaway alive has fallen through. If anyone is heading to Kansas Fest and has room to transport computers please contact me off list. I’m in NJ near Infoage but could easily drive an hour+ or so in any direction to meet up with someone. I do not have any days off between now and Monday so my availability is also limited. I was originally planning on sending about a dozen machines (CPUs only, no monitors. Some 100% working, some needing minor work like keyswitches, power supplies etc, some just cosmetically wanting but otherwise working) but if that’s too much I’d send whatever was feasible. I had not reached out prior to tonight as I believed transportation was not an issue. Unfortunately, things happen and the person arranging transport can no longer do it. Tony Sent from my iPhone

https://mitmuseum.mit.edu/LunarDay July 20, 2019 We are especially thrilled to welcome the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) Restoration Team to the Museum, and see the results of their multi-year effort to restore the AGC #14 used for ground testing and man-rating of the Lunar Module in Houston. Unless you are an Apollo astronaut or part of the team that worked on the AGC and its software, this is the first time ever, to see this computer in action! A display will be open all day, and presentations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. will allow for a deeper dive into how the computer works, and the challenges of restoring it.

Got to the museum at 11 today to meet with a local Bell Labs alum who heard about us and wanted to donate a straight Apple II. It's a rev. 3 or 4, very clean, but it was last turned on 30 years ago so I'll let Ian, Tony, or Corey evaluate it at the next workshop. I did not want magic smoke. This is only our second original Apple II. The guy used it as part of a Bell Labs field trial of cell phone infrastructure in Chicago in the late 1970s -- that's historic! Then the place was dead from 1-3, and there were tons of visitors from 3-5. Coincided with rain outside -- mostly tourists who left the beach, I suppose. Mike P. (a member who brought his kids to VCF East and some of our workshops) stopped by too. I didn't leave until 5:30 because of an enthusiastic tour group. I also tried to set up our new LTE modem; it's supposed to be more reliable than the old one. I got the modem itself working, but I need help to get the wireless/Ethernet bridge connected to our network. Dean, Jason, Neil, Alex J, etc. could all help with this.

RL01 Platter Removal?
by W2HX 06 Jul '19

06 Jul '19

Hi all, I have a crashed RL01 disk (very crashed). I'd like to remove it from the plastic cover to display it. I opened up the case but cannot figure out how to remove the platter? I took 4 philips screws out which only served to remove a metal ring. It seems that the handle is somehow attached to the platter and seems it is preventing me from removing the platter. Whats the trick? Thanks Eugene

FTAGH: BK Precision Model 1431 scope
by David Riley 02 Jul '19

02 Jul '19

Hi all, My recently deceased uncle left me with a number of things that I’d like to re-home because now I have too many of them. One is this oscilloscope. It seems to be a pretty run-of-the-mill older analog scope with some noisy pots and a PL-259 input connection; I can also supply a 50-ohm PL-259 cable and N connector adapter. The screen seems to be in pretty good shape, with a decently bright trace and no burn-in that I can see. I don’t have the right combination of adaptors to hook this up nicely to a signal generator, so I’d have a hard time testing the vertical amp, but the sweep seems fine and the level controls seem to work. Anyone interested? I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it to any upcoming workshops, but I should be able to make Festivus. You can also pick it up if you’re reasonably local to Philly. Contact me off-list for a picture, since pictures don’t seem to come through well and I can’t be arsed to put it up on a server. - Dave

Looking for schematic for Tandy HD

All – I just obtained a 25-1025 10MB external hard drive unit for my Tandy 2000. There is a relay inside that powers the unit on when accessed from the controller. Unfortunately, one of the relay coil leads has come undone (the trigger, not the ground) and I don’t know where it goes. Does anyone have a schematic of the power supply or a copy of the service manual, or a link, so I can fix it? Thanks! Pet Help
by David Hoelzer 28 Jun '19

28 Jun '19

Hey- My life is still in turmoil, but I decided to have a go at my PET before moving it on to a new home (yes, some of you know who I'm looking at). At this point, it is semi-conscious again... but... I appear to have a strong clock, phi1, phi2, and there appears to be data appearing on the data lines of the 6502 (see the logic analyzer output). The display, however, is not happy looking. Additionally, while the display in the photo looks awesome (compared to complete darkness), it will randomly flicker to darkness or perhaps even go dark for long periods. Nothing is particularly hot on the board, I just burned a complete set of EPROMs (and verified them), and I've been over the board three times looking for solder joints, etc. When the screen goes dark, the tube is still glowing, so I'm guessing that it's a video circuitry problem, but I'm stumped as how to tell if it's on the board or on the CRT board. (This is a 2001-N 32k..) Any suggestions? I know we have some PET pros around here. Photos attached. If they don't go to the list (I don't remember of they do) ping me and I'll send them direct. -- ---- David Hoelzer Chief of Operations Enclave Forensics, Inc.

Princeton data center visit
by Evan Koblentz 28 Jun '19

28 Jun '19

Only two or three people expressed interest in seeing the Princeton U. data center, and I had a different reason to be on their campus today, so I asked for a last-minute tour and my contact their obliged. They have multiple data centers. Most of them are production IT. The one they showed me has some IT but mostly it's science: https://facilities.princeton.edu/projects/high-performance-computing-resear… I was blown away by how clean it is inside! :) It's almost mostly lights-out -- I only saw two employees during the 60-minute tour, and the lights went on/off automatically as we traversed the hallways. Pictures (personal use only): http://tinyurl.com/y2n2g4se The files called electric.jpg, standby.jpg, pipes.jpg, and overview.jpg are self-explanatory. Financial.jpg is a cage with special security for one rack that's used with credit card transactions. Super_hp.jpg is "TIGER" -- their HPE-designed supercomputer. IBM_9.jpg is their newest machine under construction. I spotted some interesting older equipment (can't say what yet) which might fit into VCF-land :), so hopefully we can make that happen. -- Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation www.vcfed.org evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 VCF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization

27 Jun '19

Only a few visitors today, but they were good ones, including two engineers -- one ex-HP, one ex-Bell Labs. Our museum internet access is via a hotspot (Mobile Citizen, which is $10/month exclusively for non-profits). We recently ordered a newer version of the hotspot, which arrives next Monday. But they made a mistake and deactivated our old one yesterday .... GRRRR ... so we didn't have any internet access today nor will we have it this weekend. There's a change they will reactivate the old one in the next day or two. I am skeptical but I have no way of knowing if it works until I get there and try it Saturday. I spent some time working on version 2 of our touchscreen information kiosk. This time the work is focusing on better layout/writing for the kiosk content. In version 1 I focused on getting all the right tech bits, tying up loose ends with the CSS, getting the web server running, and making sure the whole setup is rock-solid reliable.

Maker Faire this year
by Evan Koblentz 21 Jun '19

21 Jun '19

Everyone, This year's idea for our World (NYC) Maker Faire exhibit is replicas/workalikes. The registration opens next month, so for now this is conceptual. Me/Dean/Jeff/Corey are planning it behind-the-scenes. We will bring: - Replica 1 (Not a Mimeo, because the former is hobbyist-friendly; latter is for true aficionados) - Altair Mini - PiDP - Kim Uno - Commodore Mini - Glitchworks 8085 - Atari Flashback (maybe) Two questions: - Does anyone have Oscar's PDP-11/70, and if so are you willing to loan it to us or (better yet) exhibit it personally at the event? - What other replica hardware should we consider for this exhibit?

OT: Here's my resume
by Evan Koblentz 18 Jun '19

18 Jun '19

Hey everyone. I'm not unemployed: my job situation is just stuck in a rut (not counting the awesome work I have the privilege of doing for VCF!), so I decided to expand my horizons. I had an "Ah-ha!" moment last night. I figured out that "IT communications specialist" is a real thing for which large-ish companies hire people like me. For example: new company-wide IT changes? Complicated security trends? Problems with policy documentation? Need to explain to all the non-IT people what the heck virtualization is and why they should care? And so on ... there are a million topics to keep such a person busy. Most of the time this job is burdened to a junior IT staffer who can't write, CIO who's out of touch with the masses, or HR worker who doesn't understand the technology. So, if you're on this list and you know of such a need at a big-ish company, then hire me! I'll be the guy who explains all things IT to everyone outside the department. Here is my resume. Feel free to distribute as you see fit: http://snarc.net/ek_res_comms.pdf. Thanks!! PS. All, I just heard from him. He has not had any luck finding a qualified non-profit who wants it and it's looking to sell. Don't think he wants a ton of money for it, but it looks like he's looking for at least $100 plus shipping (which seems to be about market rate right now for a working unit.) Here's his description if anyone is interested: Osbourne 1 and all accessories including all the software available at the time and keyboard overlays for those. The only defect is that the leather carrying handle disintegrated and only the wire handle is left. As far as I know, it is in perfect working condition. I paid $1795 in 1981for the basic package (which is equivalent to $4947 today) but I purchased several add-ons in programs and keyboard overlays. I will need some remuneration. Old VCF East shirts needed
by Evan Koblentz 17 Jun '19

17 Jun '19

I want to hang the old festival shirts in the museum. One from each event. I have all of the East shirts except 2008 (the yellow one). Somehow I'm also missing the orange shirt from a couple of years ago. The ones I do have are all size small or medium, so I'm hoping to find those or maybe size large, but not XL or bigger so they look consistent.

Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 16 Jun '19

16 Jun '19

Modest amount of visitors today -- it was too nice outside to visit a museum! A group of 20-somethings came in for a tour. They were smart, polite, and asked good questions. They seemed amazed by computer life before Windows and about the myth vs. reality of how Apple formed. Jimmy from the model trains group is a programmer in the day job and helped me debug the information kiosk. It wasn't always returning to the homepage after the set amount of time. Hard to fix that without seeing the kiosk program code, so he showed me how to put some Javascript into the my content pages that accomplishes the same thing. This way is better because I can customize the events that trigger idle states, the amount of idle time for each page, etc. I did some warehouse work too. Organized more of the robotics and educational/trainer kits, and disposed of a growing pile of unloved books/software (certain things that nobody took from the 'free' pile at VCF East.) Doug is docent tomorrow.

More history of Lego robotics
by Evan Koblentz 14 Jun '19

Although my website is about Lego robotics from before the Mindstorms era, I decided it's useful to document early Mindstorms development at MIT. So check out the new "Making 'Storms" section ... http://www.mindsbeforethestorm.com ... there are also many small update since the last time that I posted about this.

[Slightly OT] Need suggestions/ help
by laurakid 13 Jun '19

13 Jun '19

As some of you may remember me mentioning around last years Festivus, I have been overwhelmed by my (not so) current tech. I have had security issues, trouble with adjusting to and backing up/ restoring from multiple platforms and devices. I am keeping it vague to keep it short. Basically, I could use help from someone who would have the time and capability to help me regain some control over my data and create a current setup that is secure and meets my needs. I was thinking this could be a good freelance gig for a kid looking for summer work? Any suggestions on how to approach this problem are appreciated. OT: Grub question
by Evan Koblentz 13 Jun '19

13 Jun '19

I wanted to wipe one of my spare older PCs. I used an MS-DOS boot disk and ran fdisk. That worked for zapping the partition, but it left behind Grub when I reboot. How do I delete that?
