Classic macOS (68K/PPC) questions
by John Heritage 10 Jun '25

10 Jun '25

When Apple released macOS 8.5 for classic Macs, Apple "no longer supported 680x0 processors". Would 8.5 run on any 68K Macs that had a PPC accelerator card? If yes, what was the latest macOS tht would support this configuration? And would any native 68K apps "run" under this config on the original 68K hardware? Thanks! John

There were about 5 vendors registered that didn't show up, but there were 19 unregistered (paid at the gate) that took their place. Vendors: We had more than last time. Attendees: About the same as last time. Volunteers: Overall I had enough, but could have used a few more volunteers so that I could give volunteers more breaks and at least one more on Friday loading. Food Truck: They cancelled at the last minute, so Corey's idea of buying pizza worked out well. We would have just paid Wake $400 anyway (Food truck from October). So it worked out well for everyone. Vendors: Many reported lots of sales on their items. VCF/MARCH sold lots of surplus which benefits funding repairs and improvements in the warehouse. > So I guess Jeff Brace was right in a way, > the rain held off just long enough to have a successful event. > But I was a little annoyed that it rained anyway just when I was packing > up. > Yes. The rain was annoying for all of us. I had to go with my gut about the weather based on being a local and knowing the quirks of the local weather patterns. I guessed that it would be light on and off rain with no lightning. So everyone that took my advice to bring a tent benefitted. The heavier rain didn't come until the show was already winding down. > And thank you for the pizza! > You're welcome! I'm glad that you enjoyed it! THANKS TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS WHO MADE THIS EVENT A SUCCESS! *Joe Giliberti*: For helping with Friday loading, driving and unloading the truck at 5:30AM and doing 3 loads, helping with breakdown as well. The hardest working volunteer who helped me in the weeks leading up to the event. *Rick*: For putting out and taking up signs, helping with canopy setup. *"Truck" Doug*: for his truck, setting up canopy, setup and breakdown. *Bill I*: For setting up and taking down the canopy. *August *for selecting surplus items and pricing them, monitoring the surplus items. *Thomas *for pricing surplus items and running the bull horn *Ian Litchfield* for monitoring the surplus items and running the bull horn *Keith *for helping with setup, admissions, breakdown. *Drew *for taking admissions. *Maki *for watching the exit. *Doug C*. for helping with admissions. *Corey, Ben, Liz and Bill D *for helping with admissions and swag sales. *David G, Crawford G, Maki, Andrew, Nick, Joe* etc who helped with breakdown. *Rich B & Andy B *for directing parking. I'm sure that I'm forgetting others just remind me. Thanks to all the vendors who came despite the unpredictable weather. You keep the buyers coming back again and again to this event. The next swap meet is Oct. 18! Same place and time. Hopefully we will get the Fire Museum to bring the portable kitchen truck this time! > Mike Rosen > > Sent from: > My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device. >

Hello! And let me be the next one to say so in public about the swap meet. It was very good. Actually Mike the rain held off as much as that because I was there as long as I was able. Let me be the first one to say thank you to all for the swap meet, it turned out to be very good. A lot of vendors maybe didn’t show because of the possibility of rain, but you know what, many did show and at 10am to 1030 am I was so busy, I was so overwhelmed and sold out a lot of stuff. So I guess Jeff Brace was right in a way, the rain held off just long enough to have a successful event. But I was a little annoyed that it rained anyway just when I was packing up. And thank you for the pizza! Mike Rosen Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

SWAP MEET IS ON! - UPDATE 6/5/25
by Jeffrey Brace 09 Jun '25

09 Jun '25

Swap Meet Update 6/5/25 So the negotiations with the weather gods have been successful! The latest weather forecast shows a 57% chance of rain around 8AM and thunderstorms 5PM or later. So with this, I'm going ahead with the swap meet as planned. Everyone is encouraged to use their best judgment as to their safety in coming to the event. My highest recommendation is to bring a tent that can be anchored with sandbags. Generally a good idea regardless of rain. Also bring waterproof clothing (i.e. raincoats, etc.) If any vendor should feel uncomfortable and needs to cancel, we will refund you, but once you show up, there is no refund. Vendor setup is 7AM General Admission is 8AM

There is a Sunday Workshop day. I did not see our usual "resident" CRT experts there on Saturday, so I don't know if any will be there on Sunday. That doesn't mean there aren't others in attendance who may have good CRT skills, but I'm not personally aware that the other attendees are or are not. I did see a few new faces, so there is a possibility some of them are good with CRT repair. But that's the cool thing about the Workshops. You can find a surprising array of knowledge and talent in this hobby. CRT component excluded, you may find others who could help you with the other circuitry in your 3153 terminal. It may be possible to "blindly" test the communications aspect of the device... talking to another terminal with the other connection responding to what you type. Maybe others who are attending the Workshop today will respond. MARCH Workshop, InfoAge Campus, June 7-8, 2025
by Jeff Salzman 05 Jun '25

Just a reminder about this weekend's MARCH Repair Workshop. Workshops have resumed for the MARCH (VCF) organization at InfoAge Science Center in Wall Township, NJ after a short hiatus following the VCF-East event. Starting June 2025, the Workshop will take place exclusively in the 9032A room attached to the back side of the InfoAge "Hotel" building. CDL will not be opened for Workshop activity. For those who attended VCF-East, 9032A is where the lower exhibit hall was located. A large room at ground level with plenty of windows and cement floor. The entrance to 9032A is via a door near where the airplane is located on the InfoAge campus. See the MAP tab in the signup spreadsheet linked below for visual reference. Please add your name to the spreadsheet below so we can have an idea of the number of tables to reserve for attendees: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LnfIzE2RH6EAPVMhQwnYPIyqi5mOL9BCSjZ… Also note, that since this month's Workshop coincides with the VCF Swapmeet, the Workshop may not officially open until 2PM on Saturday, June 7, when the Swapmeet ends. June 7, 2025 Swap Meet Status
by Jeffrey Brace 05 Jun '25

05 Jun '25

I know that everyone is looking at the weather for the swap meet this coming Saturday, June 7. We have been watching the weather forcast very closely. A little rain is not concerning, but the thunderstorms are concerning. We will make a final call on Thursday at 10PM about what we will do. We will post here: https://vcfed.org/vcf-swap-meet/ so that there is one spot for current status information. A second issue is the food truck. The food truck cancelled a few days ago because the head chef died suddenly. We couldn't find a replacement at the last minute since it is a summer weekend and everyone is booked. We *may* have some solution to support at least the vendors and volunteers. The general public are on their own. Otherwise we have plenty of vendors signed up lots of interest. We have been daily out posts on Facebook & Instagram to tell everyone about the event. Lots of engagement, interest and excitement. Any questions? Please email: swapmeet(a)vcfed.org. Take care! IBM 4224 Printer: How easy is it to repair?
by Dan FitzGerald 05 Jun '25

05 Jun '25

Good morning! On Tuesday night I (drunk) purchased an IBM 4224 line printer from a scrapper and the associated service documentation from another ebay seller. The scrapper has a few available, half of which have a similar problem with the display momentarily showing power and then going out. I have no idea how broken this thing is because the service documentation isn't available on the internet. My hope is that I can repair this and get it running so that the Classical Computing Laboratory can have a 3270 line printer connected to "CCLVM1", our VM/ESA 2.4.0 installation. I like the 4224 because it seems to be more common than a 3287 and will also run off of 120v power (our 6262 requires 240v, so it is now a static exhibit installed in front of a cafeteria entrance). Does anybody here have any experience working with repairing IBM 4224 printers, and if so do you have any tips/tricks/advice that you could share with me? the Kenbak-1 MEGA
by Jeffrey Jonas 05 Jun '25

At first, I thought the Arduino was just a toy. The KIM Uno changed my mind, the "a-ha! moment" when I realized that the Arduino is the jello-instant-pudding of embedded processors. The magic ingredient that makes everything easier. The Kenbak-1 MEGA takes that to 11. It's an Arduino shield that looks and acts like the Kembak's front panel. Would you like to learn more? The KIM and SYM were the original 6502 trainers:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KIM-1https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S… The KIM Uno is the modern replica: https://obsolescence.wixsite.com/obsolescence/kim-uno-summary-c1uuh The KIM Uno is a very simple "open-source hardware" project that started out as a replica of the classic 1976 KIM-1 computer. Later, Apple-1 compatibility and a 6502 programmable calculator mode were added, plus a built-in 'early 6502 software gems' collection. We just keep tweaking and adding. It costs about $10 in commonly available parts (board & parts without case or power supply), but provides a faithful KIM-1 'experience'. Victor 9000 Questions
by Hopkins, Justin 02 Jun '25

Just bought one of these at an online estate sale, condition unknown, I am picking it up this week. I don't know what software comes with it, or if it even works. I plan on using it as a dumb terminal, so as long as it can run Kermit, that is all I will need. And I guess the keyboards need to be refurbished with new foam and foil sets because they wear out. Does anyone have a set of new pads that they could bring to the swap meet that I could buy off you? If I order some from texelec, they won't arrive in time. Kelly's great garage sale
by Kelly Leavitt 31 May '25

Well, basement sale. I have a basement full of old computers. Way more than I will ever have the opportunity to work with. If anyone wants to stop by Wantage, NJ and take a car load let me know. If you're in the market for XT up to P4 computers, please ask. I'm not looking for eBay prices either. I'm very reasonable. I also have a lot of the early AIO macs and more Tandy/TRS-80 stuff than you can shake a stick at. The TRS-80 stuff is what I mostly want to keep, but if you're looking for something let me know. Dean can attest to the sheer quantity of stuff in my basement. I will take some pictures this weekend and post them somewhere public. I do not have the time to inventory everything at the moment, but I have a LOT of stuff. I'm trying to reduce the pile so I can make some sense of it. I will take many pictures and answer any questions. At the moment, I do not want to deal with shipping. Thanks, Kelly

Completely agree! Absolutely worth a trip. Kelly’s got a lot of great stuff there and he’s been awesome about it getting to good homes rather then dumping it on the open market. The Bellmac-32 was probably the last CPU by AT&T Bell Labs / Western Electric, following the Bellmac-8, CRISP, Hobbit chips: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BELLMAC-8 https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/30350.30385 The hardware architecture of the CRISP microprocessor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_Hobbit Photo of the MAC-8 and Bellmac 32: https://www.cpushack.com/2013/06/16/cpu-of-the-day-bell-labs-bellmac-8-aka-… I'm trying to find the MAC-8 article in the Bell System Technical Journal issue of February 1981 (Vol 60, number 2). It is NOT one of the selected papers from the BSTJ (Bell System Technical Journal) here: https://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/toc/bstj1980.html Here's something related: https://www.telephonecollectors.info/index.php/browse/bstj-archive https://archive.org/details/bstj57-6-2251/mode/2up BSTJ 57: 6. July-August 1978: UNIX Time-Sharing System: A Support Environment for MAC-8 Systems. (Rovegno, H.D.) A 32000 chip was on display in MARCH's CPU exhibit mostly for the unique package with pins that went thru the package. I chronicled some of the 32000 chip: http://ferretronix.com/tech/3b2/index.html MARCH has a 3b2/310 and 630 terminal. The Jerq/Blit/630/730 terminals were 68k based but the 5620 was 32100 based. Wikipedia seems correct with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blit_(computer_terminal) The Blit programmable bitmap graphics terminal was designed by Rob Pike and Bart Locanthi Jr. of Bell Labs in 1982. The Blit technology was commercialized by AT&T and Teletype. In 1984, the DMD (dot-mapped display) 5620 was released, followed by models 630 MTG (multi-tasking graphics) in 1987 and 730 MTG in 1989. The 5620 used a Western Electric 32100 processor (aka Bellmac 32) and had a 15" green phosphor display with 800 x 1024 x 1 resolution (66 x 88 characters in the initial text mode) interlaced at 30 Hz. The 630 and 730 had Motorola 68000 processors and a 1024 x 1024 x 1 monochrome display at 60 Hz (most had amber displays, but some had white or green displays).

Hey folks - I was just curious if anyone had ever laid hands or if we've ever exhibited a Bellmac 32 processor (system)? Looking at specs, it may have been the first 32-bit microprocessor that was pipelined (one 32-bit instruction per clock). The chip also had a decent # of registers for 1980 (16 x 32-bit registers).

Donations requested TheA500Mini, TheSpectrum, TheVic20
by Jeffrey Brace 22 May '25

I've been using these modern implementations from retrogames.biz across the country at different shows to promote VCF: VCF SoCal, VCF MidWest, NJ Maker Day, World of Commodore, etc. I own these: TheC64, TheC4Mini, The400mini. So I lend them to VCF for events. Items like these are easy to transport and work with modern flat screens. So flying with them is easier than the original machines. VCF is looking for someone to donate the other ones that I don't have: TheA500Mini, TheSpectrum, TheVic20. If anyone is interested in donating them, then please let me know. They will be used at many events throughout the year for shows, makerfests, etc. Thanks! FYI to those asking about what cable to run. If permanent I would suggest CAT6a or 7 which would allow for multi uses of the runs! 10mb, 100mb, 1gb, or 10gb as well as regular POTS Analog Tip-Ring and even some PBX technologies like Nortel MICS. If temporary then run whatever you have the most of laying around! I think I remember seeing that a few weeks ago, and I was wondering what that was for! I *would* do it, as I operate a number of Asterisk systems with associated equipment and this is right up my alley, but unfortunately I'm not local so I'd likely only be able to attend Saturday. If someone else is able to do any needed wiring beforehand, I'm happy to help with setting up the box remotely if needed. I have a CMG card myself but haven't done anything much with it, and using TDM is really the proper way to set up a channel bank - IMO, using SIP will offer a significantly degraded experience. Any reason T1s can't be run back to the Asterisk server, particularly if it'll be on site? That, and it's significantly more feature rich, when dealing with analog phones. There's a lot of cool stuff you can do with TDM that you just can't do with SIP. From what I understand, VCF Midwest also uses real TDM at their conference and not SIP. Oh, very cool.? I did some work for Digium (Solaris drivers for some > PCI cards) about twenty years ago. Neat! Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if DAHDI ran on anything besides Linux nowadays. DAHDI BSD hasn't been maintained in forever. Even on Linux, maintenance from the company has been basically nonexistent, I am doing basically all of it (and I don't work for Digium/Sangoma). The company has really gone downhill since Mark Spencer left to fly airplanes and they sold to Sangoma, they no longer have anyone on payroll that really understands the TDM stuff at all. ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Sat, 17 May 2025 15:26:18 +0000 From: Richard Cini <rich.cini(a)gmail.com> To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> Subject: [vcf-midatlantic] Semi OT: looking for info on V25 SBC Message-ID: <DS7P223MB142458E6B401579F79C83941FB92A(a)DS7P223MB1424.NAMP223.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" All ? I know that there are some SBC and robotics people on-list so I thought I?d toss this question out there. I dug up an old project from the 1990?s that used a V25-based SBC from New Micros in Texas. There?s scant info available other than a 2-page spec sheet, but it seems that it ran Forth and a robotics ?monitor? from the Seattle Robotics Society. The former owner of NM passed away in 2020, so I thought I?d ask if anyone has a manual or schematics for the NMIT-0025 or NMIX-0025 boards (one version sat on a carrier board and the other was an ECB-sized board with a prototyping area). Here?s a link to the spec sheet (https://www.camelforth.com/e107_files/downloads/newmicros/product_datasheet…) If you go up the file tree, it looks like a great archive of New Micros stuff, but nothing on this board. I tried sending a message to the owner, but I get 403. So I tried to join the forum and that barfed too. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! In this case, a method to squeeze 23/24 calls onto two pairs of wire (T1) CMG (Customer Media Gateway) service card provides IP services like TDM-to-IP voice conversion and routing n the ADIT600 series equipment SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a specific protocol used to manage the establishment, maintenance, and termination of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephone calls. Semi OT: looking for info on V25 SBC
by Richard Cini 17 May '25

17 May '25

All – I know that there are some SBC and robotics people on-list so I thought I’d toss this question out there. I dug up an old project from the 1990’s that used a V25-based SBC from New Micros in Texas. There’s scant info available other than a 2-page spec sheet, but it seems that it ran Forth and a robotics “monitor” from the Seattle Robotics Society. The former owner of NM passed away in 2020, so I thought I’d ask if anyone has a manual or schematics for the NMIT-0025 or NMIX-0025 boards (one version sat on a carrier board and the other was an ECB-sized board with a prototyping area). Here’s a link to the spec sheet (https://www.camelforth.com/e107_files/downloads/newmicros/product_datasheet…) If you go up the file tree, it looks like a great archive of New Micros stuff, but nothing on this board. I tried sending a message to the owner, but I get 403. So I tried to join the forum and that barfed too. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! I suggest including the year that the CRAY-1 (properly ALL CAPS) was first made available and its approximate cost adjusted for inflation--along with the same info about the iPhone 16--so people can better view these two computers in context.

Please comment on draft Vintage Computer Quiz
by Herbert Johnson 12 May '25

My read in 2008 about "the first personal computer" is on the Web link below. Not to argue about it, but as an example of how there's no single answer to most vintage computer general questions. And I'll offer a quiz question and answer too. https://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/altair_first.html I leaned on the "Altair is first" and also I dialog with someone's "first" Web page on another site. Their page is well researched and comes up with interesting candidates. http://www.blinkenlights.com/pc.shtml Let's be clear: there's no "first personal computer". There are candidates over time where some number of individuals *could* own some programmable device. Or: there's firsts when you qualify some target product, as in "first to offer X Y Z". A particular qualification is quantity produced. That suggests, that personal computing is a generational experience. Generations of hardware & software, generations of people, and of course different nations and cultures than the United States. There's 50 years of microprocessors now; but computers were made by other means too. So a lot of questions about vintage computing, depend on your own vintage. If this is about personal history, that's no surprise, is it? My impression is that Bob is covering the generational differences by not insisting on one correct answer for some questions. His apparent point is to inform, amuse, and puzzle - not score the most points or to indoctrinate about what's right. Here's a candidate question. "What personal computing product was first to include a complete set of personal-use software on a complete system?" A familiar answer is, the Osborne 1 computer. Adam Osborne bundled (that's the term I think was used) CP/M, BASIC, a spreadsheet, a word processor, I think a terminal/modem program, and later a database. The computer included a monitor and keyboard and floppy drives; in fact it was a luggable computer (as in luggage). At $1795 in 1981, it helped to establish a near-$2000 price for a bundled personal computer system which lasted into the 1990's or so. There's earlier computers that had some base software & hardware included, just fewer packages or less peripherals or extra-cost. Kaypro offered a similar product not long after the Osborne 1. But even today, Microsoft Office is still a very similar set of programs to the Osborne bundle. regards Herb -- Herbert R. GameStop Switch Display Frame

https://www.facebook.com/share/1ENWko3nAD/?mibextid=wwXIfr $500. Maybe you can talk the seller down a little. BUT.. historically someday someone in MARCH or similar group would want this in their museum … knowing how rare similar Atari displays are today, 40 years later. Made to have visual appeal. this Nintendo in-store display is still in good shape. Not an item for me but always best to be ahead of the curve when collecting things. This is a future exhibit someone with the means or dedication to their niche in the hobby should pick up Bill
