Anyone in eastern Tennessee?

Epson Equity I keyboard info needed!
by CJ Reha 09 Jan '19

09 Jan '19

Hello all - I have an Epson Equity I PC clone here that uses a special keyboard which I do not have. The system boots and works flawlessly, but lacking a compatible keyboard means I cannot do much at all with it besides stare at the DOS boot screen. :P The port on the motherboard is an 8-pin DIN connector. If anyone has information on the model of said keyboard or any leads on where to acquire one, please let me know. There is a section in the manual which states if two jumpers on the motherboard are shorted certain revisions should be able to work with a standard XT keyboard, however I have not tested this out yet and would prefer to acquire an original keyboard if at all possible. Thanks a lot, CJ

[OT] Anyone Want a Decent Onkyo HDMI/Component/SVideo Switching Receiver and Speakers?
by J. Alexander Jacocks 09 Jan '19

09 Jan '19

All, I have a quite nice Onkyo TX-SR875 tuner, with remote, and a pair of Polk Monitor 50s and a 12" Polk subwoofer, and I don't have room for any of it. Unfortunately, 3-year-old hands can get to any place that I put the tuner, and that just won't work. Anyone interested? I'd like to get at least a few bucks for these, as they still sell for decent prices. I was asking $150 on Craigslist, based on a discount from the most recent sales on eBay, for the tuner, but I'd definitely do a deal for anyone in this group. The speakers are probably worth at least $50, so maybe $175 for all of it? I'll (hopefully, my wife is sick, and I'm hoping that she'll be well before Saturday) be at the workshop, this weekend, and would be happy to bring them. Thanks! - Alex

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] VCF East 2019 keynote suggestions?
by Alexander Pierson 08 Jan '19

While I'm flattered to be mentioned in this discussion, I'm nowhere near on the same level as Quinn. She's a legend. I would be comfortable doing something on Friday, and a homebrew panel of some sort sounds like a ton of fun. Now that I've had some practice with the crowd speaking at DEFCON and VCFMW last year, it sounds like something within my wheelhouse. However, back to the subject at hand of keynotes on Saturday & Sunday. I agree that we should not be to hasty in dismissing anyone at this juncture without a very good reason. -Alexander 'Z' Pierson P.S. Thank you Bob, that's very kind of you. She's indeed awesome, and maybe we can get her to VCF West this summer. Here on the east coast, we've got Alexander "Z" Pierson and his Cactus 6502 computer. He won our top prize at VCF East last year.

Folks, She’s not very close, being in California, but my suggestion is Quinn Dunki. She built her own 6502 computer from scratch, named Veronica, and documented the journey in her blog ( http://quinndunki.com/blondihacks/?page_id=1761) She is also a big fan of the Apple II, 68000, and vintage computers. Amiga software help.
by Joseph Oprysko 07 Jan '19

07 Jan '19

I recently acquired an Amiga 2000HD to my collection. I got a box of various floppies from a friend but no complete OS set. The OS on the hard drive is partially corrupt or at least missing files. Thw system has a 2.0 Rom in it but I have a 3.x Rom as well, if I can get a full set of Amiga OS 3.1 floppies. I also have an XT Emulation card and no drivers for that either. If someone could help out with a set of OS/Workbench disks, it would be greatly appreciated. And if it's OS 3.1, I'll have to swap my ROM and hopefully not have to reformat the hard drive since I don't have a backup.

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] 1990s Unix Workstation Sub-Group
by Lou 07 Jan '19

07 Jan '19

Oh man, well I guess I have to let the cat out of the bag now that I was actually planning on doing a workstation Unix exhibit for this upcoming East as my first exhibit. The main reason for this aside from my love of Unix and all of its flavors is that we are approaching on the 50th birthday of Unix itself this year! It would have been a great way to celebrate Unix and its impact to the world. Hearing all about this though, this makes things even more better! I already talked to Andy on the matter and we are considering on doing a group/team effort for this exhibit now. More people means more examples of Unix for us to show off and really show off its impact in computing and in the industry. I already have been hunting down examples for the exhibit for more than a year now and have a NeXT system, a few Suns, a few SGI's that need some work, and hopefully soon an HP-UX machine. I am also hoping on getting my hands on a AT&T PC7300/3B1 Unix PC from Glitch in the near future as well once we can work things out. Also while I do not want to jump the gun too soon I might also be getting my hands on a PDP-11 as well through some remarkable luck, but this is still up in the air. A mega Unix workstation/system exhibit this year for East would be genuinely awesome, and knowing that this will be a team effort will make things all the better!

Why is hardware development any less relevant than software? Chip design IS computer history as much as or more so than software. Just because she was from Commodore doesn’t make it a narrow topic. If an Intel or TI chip designer was available, would you accept them? And I appreciate the C history but I see Tony’s point. All talks we have had could be considered narrow by some definition. Why dismiss a Commodore chip designer so hastily? On Jan 7, 2019, at 12:35 PM, Tony Bogan <thebogans(a)mac.com> wrote: > On Jan 7, 2019, at 12:31 PM, Evan <evan(a)vcfed.org> wrote: > > >> I understand Evan’s desire for mass appeal but at the same time I can say without a doubt I and many others had zero interest in hearing about the development of C or C+ and similar topics. > > > Those were two of the best-attend keynotes we ever had. > Perhaps, but that doesn’t change the fact that neither I nor many others are programmers. The point was apparently missed, and I blame myself for not being clearer. The C keynote was an example of a topic, not meant as an example of a poorly attended keynote (and I never mentioned if they were or were not heavily attended) The fact that the tent is no longer used will also hopefully increase the attendance of all keynotes!! But to my point that I apparently did not make clear, focus on the one sentence that matters. The fact that it’s already January and the process is just starting....... I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss anyone until we have someone we don’t want to dismiss. End of line. Tony

Andy's 2019 Clean out - more complete systems
by dillera＠gmail.com 06 Jan '19

06 Jan '19

Hello- I'm really trying to clean out my stuff and get rid of things that work but that I will never use. Some are of little value, and I've been bringing that stuff up and giving it away (a bunch is coming next Saturday). However I have a few systems (Mac, Amiga, Powebook etc) that are of some value and I want to see them go somewhere useful. But due to recent shipping hazards I'm not willing to ship them- so meeting in person at InfoAge is a great solution to this problem. I don't expect ebay crazy prices for them- just something fair. And I want to solve for some people finding out before others... therefore... What I've decided is to do a first-price sealed-bid auction - anyone interested should reply to me off-list. I'll send you a list of the stuff. You reply back with your bid. Friday I'll announce to the entire group who has won what. I'll bring the stuff to InfoAge. If you don't show up to claim it, it will go to the next bidder. If there are issues beyond that I'll get rid of it at InfoAge to someone, or do it again for the Feb Repair Day. thanks, -andy

Anyone ever adjust the yoke on a 1970’s Sony trinitron?
by corey cohen 06 Jan '19

06 Jan '19

So I have a 1974-75ish Sony KV-9200 color Trinitron TV and I need to rotate the yoke a little because the image is crooked. I removed the rubber wedges but the yoke won’t budge. I decided to walk away for a few hours and just took another look and I did just notice there is a small clamp on the end of the tube neck that could be loosened up, but before I do that I was wondering if that is what it’s intended for to hold the yoke in place against the rubber wedges? I don’t want to have to adjust the convergence so I haven’t loosed it yet just Incase that is wrong. I’m also worried because the neck is the most fragile part of the tube and don’t want to break it. This is all I have left to do on this TV. I replaced every electrolytic cap, adjusted b+, cleaned all the controls and refreshed the entire exterior. Any advise would be helpful. SGI O2s
by Stephen A Edwards 04 Jan '19

04 Jan '19

I have a handful of SGI O2s and parts that I'd love to sell/trade to a good home (I'm in Manhattan). Feel free to contact me. W.r.t. the Sun 3/60 thread, I managed to set one up running SunOS 4.1 diskless off a modern Linux machine. It's not that difficult (basically configure DHCP, TFTP, and NFS, all of which live on in modern software) and solves the noisy SCSI drive problem.

Sun 3/60 lives again
by Mike Loewen 04 Jan '19

04 Jan '19

This has been on my TODO list for years, so it's a good way to start off the new year. I have a Sun 3/60 with 24MB and CG4 video which I've been meaning to set up as a diskless client from my Linux server. Until I get a keyboard adapter cobbled together for a Type 4 keyboard, I'm using a serial console. Diagnostics all check out from the PROM. There's a document floating around which describes one user's efforts to netboot his 3/60: http://sites.inka.de/pcde/help/sunos_network_boot.html I used that as a starting point, but it was written in 2004 so there are additional steps required. For one thing, bootparamd is no longer included in Fedora Linux (since FC25), so I had to make some changes to the FC24 SRPM for bootparamd to get it compiled and repackaged for FC28. Also, FC28 by default has NFS version 2 disabled so you have to change options in /etc/nfs.conf to enable UDP and version 2. Here's the console log of it booting SunOS 4.1.1: Mike Loewen mloewen(a)cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boot: le(0,0,0) Booting from tftp server at 192.168.202.1 = C0A8CA01 Downloaded 101800 bytes from tftp server. OT: MAGFest 2019 - This Weekend
by Ethan O'Toole 03 Jan '19

03 Jan '19

While it pales in comparison to the VCF East event MAGFest is coming up this weekend. MAGFest is a 4 day video game music and gaming event in the DC metro area. There is a computer museum room run by friends (and consistent VCF East attendees.) It's mostly plastic micros and early mainstream desktop computers -- so nothing too wild for this audience. They also have some various more rare game consoles in the museum on PVMs. The museum room is around 3000 sqft, and everything is pretty much sit down and play. There is also a 30,000 sqft arcade room (this part of the event is where I'm involved), a 30,000 sqft console gaming room, tabletop and board games, indie game area (10,000sqft+ maybe?) Oh, and stages. A good number of musical acts from nerdcore hip hop to jazz to metal to rock to who knows what. There is also a jam clinic for people who want to bring their musical instrument and I guess improve your improvisational skills, or jam rooms where you can sign up to play with others. And new this year is a demoparty, where people will be working I believe on making new demos. I saw mention of AGA Amiga and C64, and I would assume PC. It's kind of hard to sum up, but some parts run 24x7 (not the museum but the arcade does), and there should be over 15,000 people there. If any VCF'ers are headed there hit me up, I am usually around the arcade but visit the museum and usually catch a concert or two! If there is info for VCF East, I can print some copies out and the museum people would be happy to post them around. Here is a video of the museum in 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r_oKdJ_rCU - Ethan

Slow day visitor-wise, as everyone was back at school/work. A few familes still came through. I spent most of the downtime working on improvements to the infoage.org site. It's not great, but it's a whole lot better vs. a month ago! Been teaching myself how to use the "Divi" theme for WordPress (IA selected that a while back). Big learning curve, but it's fairly powerful when you get the hang of it. I got stuck on a tiny bit of CSS code, which Dave Riley walked me through fixing.

Museum report

31 Dec '18

Quiet day at Infoage today. Sounded like most of the traffic came yesterday. I had a handful of visitors come through with mild interest and a father and son that took the full tour and asked lots of questions. I had the time today to test myself on several machines. In addition to the demo on the UNIVAC, I ran the shorter demo on the HP 1000 (lights moving in one direction) and I also had the Altair running “kill the bit” as well. Once Dave shows me how to demo the PDP I’ll move on to learning some basic stuff on the TRS-80 and PET. I have a simple text welcome program I run on the Apple II sometimes in lieu of the slide show disk we often run and I’ve learned enough about the C64 to run the Sid player or a program or two and I usually run a game or deluxe Paint on the Amiga. With Lisa Guide now set up on the Lisa (thanks Jason!) and the Mac 128 running MacPaint, the NeXT Cube running whatever you like (tons of software on it) plus the AT&T PC booted, the 5150 running its Intro software, the other PC running Windows 3.11 and the Osborne running (I usually load either Microsoft Basic or Hitchhikers Guide) we have the micros pretty well covered. Getting to be that time of year again for me so I’ll be able to docent at the museum more often over the next few months. Tony Sent from my iPhone

OT: tool chest, table saw FS
by Evan Koblentz 31 Dec '18

31 Dec '18

I'm moving in a few weeks and need to go minimalist. Is anyone interested in a tool chest (red, casters, about waist-height) and/or a table saw? Both of them came from Sears around 10 years ago and do their jobs fine. I no longer need either one, but I do need quick $$$. I * may * be able to deliver these to the museum or anywhere not too far away. Not sure if the toolchest will fit in my car. Possibly if I lay it down. Please reply off-list. Priority goes to whomever can take them soonest. Rather not wait until the Jan. 12-13 workshop.

Has anybody been running it? David, when I’ve been at the museum I have not run it as I am unfamiliar with it. Perhaps if you’re at one of the upcoming workshops you could give me a crash course (pun intended) so I could run a demo for visitors. When Bill Dromgoole was there he both wrote down and walked me through the diagnostic we use to show the machine running. It’s not sexy but for 99% of the people it’s enough blinking lights and whirring to get the “wow it actually works!” Response from them. I also have a video of Bill running the program that I can refer back to. I would never attempt to mess with a machine I am not familiar with, but I should have asked a long time ago for you to show me the basics. I’d love to have yet another machine to demo for visitors. All – I just finished fixing a T2K that I was given and I’m looking for the mouse/clock board (26-5144) and mouse (26-1197) so that I can get Windows 1 working on it. If anyone has spares or is looking to thin their herd, please let me know. Thanks! Happy New Year to all! Rich -- Rich Cini http://www.classiccmp.org/cini http://www.classiccmp.org/altair32

Evan knows how to do it and will be including it in his forthcoming docent manual which will also have a video. @David Let us know what to look for as we run it. PDP 8 documents (ephemera) available
by William Dudley 29 Dec '18

29 Dec '18

Back in the late 70's, when the PDP 8 was already getting long in the tooth, a friend and I built PDP-8 clones using the Intersil 6100 chip. (The museum has my PDP-8 clone in their collection.} We also copied every bit of PDP-8 documentation we could. Because I never throw anything out, but want to make it so my son doesn't have to get the extra large dumpster when I go, I recently discoved a book box full of PDP-8 documentation. Most of it is 8 1/2 x 11, except for the first two items. Some of this stuff is original Digital Equipment Corp publications, some is photocopies; that is noted for each item below. There are multiple copies of a few of the documents, also noted below. Also, there is one (1) pdp-12 document in the collection (a photocopy). All these documents are in excellent shape, especially since they've been in a box in my basement for 30 years, and in the same box in a different basement for 5 years prior to that. The museum (a.k.a, Evan) gets first dibs. After that -- I dunno, depends on how much interest there is. os/8 handbook first printing 1974/4 - 2 copies (official DEC paperback book) ALL of the following are 8 1/2 x 11: os/8 software support manual (version 3 1974/6) - 3 photocopies os/8 software support manual (version 3 1974/6) - 1 original decus program library: Focal photocopy DEC-S8-CFTNA-A-D fortran IV users manual first printing 1973/6 2 photocopies DEC-S8-LFSSA-A-D fortran IV software support manual 1973 photocopy pdp/8 floating point system programming manual photocopy Digital-8-2-U Binary loader (original listing) 1966/3/23 (to be toggled in) DEC-08-PMPA-D Readin-Mode (RIM) Punch (original listing) 1966/11/22 8 DEC-08-COAA-D (L) ODT (mimeograph ? listing) 1967/5/12 DEC-08-COCO-D ODT-8 1968/10/10 photocopy DEC-08-NGCA-D PDP-8 Console Manual 1966 original Maindec 802 Memory Checkerboard Test 1965/9/1 (original listing) Maindec 803 Memory Address Test 1965/5/11 (original listing) Digital-8-6-U-Sym Octal Memory Dump 1965/3/17 (mimeograph ? listing) Digital-8-5-U-Sym Binary Punch 1965/3/1 (original listing) DEC-08-ESAA-D PDP-8 Symbolic Editor Programming Editor 1965 original DEC-08-BA1A-D PDP-8 Program Abstracts 1966/10/11 (original) DEC-08-CMAA-D PDP-8 Macro-8 Programming Manual 1965 (original) DEC-08-ASAA-D PDP-8 PAL III Symbolic Assembler Programming Manual 1965 (original) DIGITAL-8-4-S PDP-8 DDT Programming Manual 1965 (original) DEC-S8-UPTHA-B-D EPIC User's Manual (photocopy) DEC-S8-OSRNA-A-D OS/8 System Release Notes (V03C) (2 photocopies) DEC-S8-OSHBA-A-DN1 OS/8 Handbook Addendum - New Handlers (photocopy) AD-0877G-B1 Digital Software News PDP-8 1977/4 (photocopy) miscellaneous pages of Digital Software News (1976) (photocopy) miscellaneous photocopied DEC errata and correction pages (title unknown) Chapter 4 RX8E Interfacing Programming Information (2 photocopies) DEC-12-UFPAA-A-D pdp12 FPP Assembler User's Guide 1973/7 - (photocopy) Bill Dudley This email is free of malware because I run Linux.

Thank you - end-of-year donations - still time! :)
by Evan Koblentz 28 Dec '18

28 Dec '18

Thank you to everyone who made year-end contributions to VCF this month. I know there are lots of procrastinators here. :) Good news, it's only December 28 and you have three more days to make calendar year 2018 donations to your favorite cause! We need your help for things such as putting on awesome events, rescuing exotic computers, purchasing insurance, getting the warehouse organized, buying all kinds of museum/event supplies, and improving the museum displays, to name just a few of our expenses. Remember, every dollar counts and is appreciated equally. Whether you can donate $1, $10, $100, or any other amount, it all helps! Please go to http://vcfed.org/wp/contribute/ for details. Thanks very much, -Evan ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

WTD: PDP-11 tape drive?

Dave McGuire, could you comment on the challenge of some 3rd party shipping these cross-country? They are suggesting $300/$400 shipping, probably a CYA price I'm guessing. As an aside, seems to me there's likely some east-coast tape drives at lower shipping cost, if one is patient. This comes to my attention because I have a few of those less-desired auto-load or tabletop "real" tapedrives. Likely they won't run 6250 as these two eBay'ed drives will. (shrug) Herb -- Herbert R. Museum Report 2018-12-23
by Jeffrey Brace 24 Dec '18

24 Dec '18

Now that the holiday train show has ended, there were less visitors. About a dozen or so. Ranging from mild to moderate interest. Tony stopped by to pick up a VCF Apple 2 to repair. I spent much of my time with VCF e-mails to catch up on all the planning for the local and national group. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2>

OT: Master Tracks Pro (MIDI for Mac SE/30?)
by Ethan O'Toole 22 Dec '18

22 Dec '18

Heya, Anyone happen to have Master Tracks Pro 4.0 for the classic Mac? I have a SE/30 and the serial midi interface cable. Would like to see if I can get it driving some of my midi equipment. I looked to see if there were any copies for sale on eBay, none. Also would be interested in a Cubase or Notator dongle for the Atari ST. Would be cool even to just borrow could return at next vcf. I did find the copy of Master Tracks for the IIGS, and am going to see how that does as well. As an Atari 8bit and PC guy, I love the asthetics of the IIGS series a lot. - Ethan

OT: Looking for Server memory
by Martin Flynn 22 Dec '18

22 Dec '18

I am working on the VMware ESXi box for the CDL makerspace. I have the box up to 512GB of RAM, however more would be good! Specifically, I am looking for HP branded / 16GB sticks of 4RX4 PC3-8500R memory. HP part numbers: 500666-B21 or 500207-071 or 501538-001. This is one of those situations where the factory part is needed to match what's already there!
