FS: Last of the VCF East XIII Special Edition SBC Kits
by systems_glitch 20 Dec '18

20 Dec '18

All, I've got the last of the special edition 8085 SBC rev 3 kits picked, wanting to clear out the last of the boards before moving on to the next thing. You can read about it here: http://www.glitchwrks.com/2018/06/30/8085-sbc-rev3 Price on the kit is $75 shipped in the US. The EEPROM comes pre-programmed with my ROM monitor, GWMON-80, and IMSAI 8K BASIC. Kit includes all SBC parts, you'll need a 5V power supply (0.5A is sufficient, most phone chargers put out at least this much) and something to use as a serial console (real terminal, PC with a serial port and terminal emulator, etc.). Thanks, Jonathan

Yes, My sons Brain (12) and Nate (10) spent about 3 hours with Chris, Tony, and Doug on Sunday. Thanks gents, we had a great time as always. At your suggestion, we downloaded Forever 64 Sunday night and Brian has been splitting his two hour daily screen time allotment between that and "The Eight Bit Guy" on youtube ever since. I signed up to bring our non-working Commodore 64 to the workshop on 12 JAN. The power light comes on, but there is no video from either the RF modulator or the 8 pin video jack. We ran some basic daignotics - power supply produces the correct voltages, voltage is present at specific places on the motherboard, fuse is good - but now we are stuck. Epic warehouse day!
by Evan Koblentz 20 Dec '18

20 Dec '18

Matt King and I did warehouse work from 10-6 today. We worked our butts off! - There are five sets of lights on the ceiling. We finished putting LED bulbs in all but one set. - We finished the project to create an extra aisle on the organized side for "D" (DEC overflow; Data General), "E" (Epson), and "H" (Heathkit, HP) items. Nothing exciting starts with F other than Franklin which is in with the Apple II stuff because it's clones. - We moved the Epson, Heathkit, and HP shelving units into the new aisle. We built an additional shelving unit for Heathkit items. (Data General items will be moved some other day.) - We built another shelving unit for keypunch parts, small punch card readers, and small punch card holders. We moved that unit along the other existing punch card shelving units into the "K" area. We also allocated one individual shelf (no need for a whole unit) to our two NEC APC systems. - That in turn made more space for portables, Prime, and Perkin-Elmer. - We created a space for word processing items. I'm not very high on collecting those (no, we don't want a collection of generic 1990s word processors), but we have some interesting IBM/Xerox items so now those have a place in the warehouse to call home.) All of that "shelving Tetris" resulted in a bunch of things being in more logical places, and we cleared some things out of the unorganized side. We also cleared off one pallet from the unorganized side and we made a plan for how to continue next time, when we'll hopefully get the Sun collection off its pallet and onto proper shelves.

All, I've got a Tek TDS 320 dual channel digital oscilloscope that needs to find a new home. Before it goes to eBay, I figured I'd check if anyone here needs it. Did a quick check with the function generator and it seems to be working and close to calibration. Contact me off-list if you're interested. Will ship, not looking to hold onto this particular item until VCF East though. Thanks, Jonathan

Tons of visitors today from the train show. All families, including a large number of high school kids who were genuinely interested in the subject. Good day! Doug is docent tomorrow. Also: Wall Township installed new sidewalks to our building, the military vehicles building, the woodshop across the street from us, and the future building that'll be used by the shipwreck group also across the street from us. They put in an ADA-compliant ramp, too. I am told that railings will be installed in the next week or two. Some basic landscaping is also being done.

Surplus books @ Festivus
by Evan Koblentz 11 Dec '18

11 Dec '18

We have too many books!!! Today I put aside 10 full boxes. There will be many more. I don't think much else will get done before Festivus, but we'll keep putting the pallet of surplus books out for perusal at the winter workshops. Same rules as at VCF East: $1/pound, minimum $1 charge, no fractional increments, and you only get the actual box if you buy a whole box worth. We'll need a postal scale to make this work. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

Museum Report 2018-12-09
by Jeffrey Brace 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

Dozens and dozens of visitors due to the holiday model train show at InfoAge. At one point I heard a noise and figured it was a critter. Low and behold it was a bird that was trapped inside. After lots of maneuvering and redirecting the bird, I was able to direct the bird outside. I also worked on getting more MUS files (as opposed to SID files) for the C64 that were of the holiday flavor. Now they can be easily played with SID Player from Compute! Magazine. I also made a disk image of the Commodore 64 robotics software and sent it to someone in the Las Vegas area that will be demoing this hardware/software robotics kit for the Commodore Retro eXpo. I had one lady tried to get me to explain how computers work on the most fundamental levels in a way for someone that is a computer novice. This isn't something easily done in a short conversation nor for the layman to understand. I did my best, but she didn't seem satisfied. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

Spent several hours at the museum with Laura today. In the first hour, we finished cleaning up from Festivus -- moved the tables back where they go, swept the floor, cleaned out the half-full (eww) coffee machine, etc. -- and then we did warehouse stuff for a couple of hours. We sorted several more boxes of books and made some progress on implementing the plan that Adam and I hatched to fit another aisle of shelves.

Godbout Static (RAM) But Not Lost
by Herb Johnson 04 Dec '18

04 Dec '18

Festivus and old computers reminds me: the VCFed collection includes Compupro computers, possibly some Godbout-branded S-100 cards. It may be relevant to display one in the Museum in December (if there isn't one already), and add a note about his recent passing and the events in California. I've had interest from reporters covering the fire, so it's topical. And Compupro owners who visit the Museum might like to know, and have informative things to say. It's possible the family of Bill Godbout would like to hear of such responses; Evan mentioned he had such contacts. Herb -- Herbert R. Epic festivus
by Herb Johnson 04 Dec '18

04 Dec '18

I certainly enjoyed Festivus this year. About 50 people attended, a big number for the two rooms in use. The donations and trading was quite impressive on both days. Numerous items were examined and repaired on-the-fly, which I always enjoy. My personal "laying on of hands" contributed to a few successful repairs. And of course it's always good to be among my friends and correspondents. Food was tasty and available through Saturday and bits for Sunday also. The grill produced hotdogs and burgers into the evening; and there was pasta too. Of course, lots of sweets including homemade. I took time this year, to look at the Military Vehicle collection at InfoAge. The exhibits are professional and well curated (information and artifacts). They have a surprising number of WW II and later vehicles, particularly Jeeps. And for the train/holiday season, they have a N-gauge military rail loop. About trains: InfoAge includes a model train organization, which exhibits two rooms of trains in operation each December. The exhibits are always fun to see. Model trains use digital technology to manage switches and cars. But there's also a steam-powered model locomotive, in current production, based on a early 20th c. train. But the kids just like the movement and the noise! It's a busy campus, and of course there's not enough time during the Festivus to see all of the organizations there. The holiday and train event, the Vehicle and other exhibits by InfoAge paticipants, of course bring visitors to the VCFed Museum. The Museum operated during the weekend, and looked nice. It's fun to see the Naval computer in operation and hear about progress on it. The EAI analog computer is moving along, I'm told. I look forward to those and other developments next year at the VCFed Museum. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey in the USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

Thanks Bill. The closed-loop nature makes me think of a NC tape that intentionally repeats a series of steps, perhaps as a station in a line operation. Don't believe that this particular seller has a particularly good reputation, either. Perhaps there was some late model UNIVAC system that might have been used to produce these tapes to then drive a sequencer-controller (assuming that there's anything UNIVAC'y at all about them)? -----Original Message----- From: vcf-midatlantic [mailto:vcf-midatlantic-bounces@lists.vcfed.org] On Behalf Of Bill Dromgoole via vcf-midatlantic Sent: Sunday, December 02, 2018 11:44 PM To: vcf-midatlantic Cc: Bill Dromgoole Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] UNIVAC Black Paper Tape Good question Paul. It's the great Festivus Charlie Brown!
by Joseph Oprysko 02 Dec '18

02 Dec '18

I had a great time being able to get out to Festivus. It's been a while since I've been able to make it to any of the VCF events, and it was good to see everyone. Although things got a bit dangerous on the way home. About 30 miles inland I guess I that's where the barometric pressure changed rapidly. The road became a wall a fog, but the pressure change threw off my equilibrium and I had to quickly pull over as I almost passed out. If I had to describe what it felt like, I would think of being in a washing machine. So I had to spend 15-20 on the side of 195? Trying to regain my balance and deal with an almost instantaneous migraine-like headache. Luckily traffic was light. Well I hope everyone enjoys the holiday season. Joe

I think this is pretty much universally the case when technological advances enable the general public to do something that was formerly the exclusive domain of either the highly trained, the highly talented, or the rich. It becomes commoditized. Not just the equipment, but the activity itself. I watched this happen with photography. I grew up in the 1970s; my mother was (and is, among other things) a journalist and a photographer. I grew up watching the incredible work she did, both at photo shoots and in the darkroom. It is art of the very highest order. Now everyone has digital camera. Everyone has a crappy one in their phone, and lots of people have good real ones. A lot has been gained; we can all take half decent pictures now, but a great deal has lost...almost nobody can take truly great pictures now. The general public now thinks of photography as "taking pictures"; and they don't understand the effort and talent that used to comprise nearly all of photography. It has been diluted almost beyond recognition by the advent of cheap digital cameras and the subsequent commoditization of the field. But when people see the work of, say, Ansel Adams, they say "WOW!" and sometimes wonder how he did that using such "primitive" tools. "No Photoshop, OMG!" Like other fields, the truly artistic side of it will be kept alive by people like you and my mother. Even just talking about occasionally, like here in this thread, it raises awareness and keeps it in the public consciousness. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

Yes, more to come. Some will go to breakfast, others will sleep in or be there doing whatever. Typically By later afternoon the crowd begins to thin and the packing up begins. I’ll see you there later. Just got home from work. Probably skip breakfast and head up around the same time the diner goers are sitting down to eat. You can, however, build this into your infrastructure if desired. *> (I personally think silly buzzwords like this enforce magical thinking and a lack of understanding.) > 2) There are pros and cons for both maintaining in-house servers, as well as using online cloud services. It's far afield from vintage computing, but this is aligned with interests in vintage technology. And early microprocessor and silicon technology in imaging, has been displayed at VCF-East. So there's some overlap. - Herb -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey in the USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

I've been putting the finishing touches on my Darkroom -- hopefully I'll be able to start making prints by the end of the month. Just starting to get into Medium format and small view cameras, which is just a whole different world. Best, Jason

Free stuff at Festivus
by David Riley 01 Dec '18

01 Dec '18

Hey all, I meant to post this a few weeks ago, but better late than never. I’m bringing a bunch of stuff from David Ryskalczyk (who is sadly unable to attend) that he’s offloading, including: - A number of good books (including two copies of The Dead Mac Scrolls, which is the best reference book for repairing early Macs, hands down) - A few box of PowerBook Duo 200-series parts (including batteries, which are compatible with the PowerBook 500 series, and will probably need to be re-celled, but there are companies that still do that for those batteries) - Two NeXT laser printers (I believe one is claimed by VCF, but the other one is up for grabs) - A few other things Please take them home so I don’t have to bring them back. I’ll be surprised if most of them don’t find homes, they’re good things, but I’ve already picked over the bits I can reasonably keep. - Dave
