OT: Modern keyboard question
by Evan Koblentz 26 Nov '18

26 Nov '18

I'm thinking about getting a new keyboard for my modern PC. I want to use squishy keycaps such as these: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/silica-gel-keycap-set It says they're Cherry MX compatible. Does that mean they only work with official Cherry-branded keyboards? Or is there some other search term to use (etc.) for keyboards that are Cherry-compatible? ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

Museum Report 2018-11-25 November 25, 2018
by Jeffrey Brace 26 Nov '18

26 Nov '18

Not too many visitors today as it was a holiday weekend and everyone was shopping. I spent the time getting ready for Festivus, the supplies and the C64s which I will be setting up with games.. Evan and I will be setting up tables on Wednesday and getting the general space ready. I will be doing the necessary shopping Saturday morning. I also made a list of those who were naughty and those who were nice. The naughty ones get their favorite vintage computer's motherboard with battery acid leaking all over it, mouse nest inside and all kinds of resistors, chips and capacitors rusty and dirty. The nice ones get one new in box. Looking forward to Festivus and seeing you all there! -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

25 Nov '18

I was at the museum from about 10am to 6pm today. Spent the first few hours helping IXR/CDL clean up their lab spaces. Bill L. + Lucy, Pete C. + spouse (Heather?), and Bill W. (aka Amiga Bill) + friend all visited today. I gave them the whooooooole tour, and Bill W. delivered an IBM PC Jr. to us -- not just any PC Jr. (we have a few), but rather a never-opened, sealed-in-boxes unit! It also has two of the rare carrying case. He delivered it on behalf of someone who contacted us a while ago. After the museum closed, I spent another hour in the warehouse doing, well, warehouse-y things. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

FS: Lots of Various Vintage Computing Goodies @ Festivus
by Todd George 25 Nov '18

25 Nov '18

Hi all, Trying to thin the herd a bit, here's a quick and dirty list of things I'm willing to part-with. Delivery to Festivus or other local (Eastern PA) location, cash or trade only. Let me know if any of it interests you and we can talk details. I have listed information I have on each unit, depending if I've spent any effort on them. Your interest in an item will motivate me to get pictures or whatnot. Contact me *off-list*, I rarely check the list itself due to lack of time. Apple Stuff --------------- - Apple //c with monochrome Monitor //c and stand - Apple ImageWriter II (Not working, bad limit switch on carriage) - Macintosh Compacts/Toasters (tons available, let me know your interests) - Apple Color Stylewriter 2500 in-box - Blue iMac G3 (All-in-one) - Needs HDD - Mac iBook G4 (white) - Not working, for parts - Various iMac G4 units ("Flower Pot") - Newer iMac Units (LCD-Based), likely Intel Processors Commodore Stuff ------------------------ - C64 Units - 1541 Floppy Drives - Cassette Tape Drives Tandy/Radio Shack Stuff --------------------------------- - TRS-80 Model III (? I think) - Not working, fires up to improper display, barely tested - TRS-80 Model 4P without "lid", complete otherwise - Tandy CoCo 2 (a few available), also have a ton of accessories, software, manuals, books, disk drives, etc. Miscellaneous Stuff -------------------------- - Atari 800XL - Bad memory, worked 100%, failed while in operation - Atari 2600 Game Console - Intellivision Game Console - Colecovision Game Console - Epson QX-10 - No keyboard, no monitor, truly untested - SGI Personal Iris - No side panel - Panasonic Senior Partner - Panasonic Executive Partner - KayPro II - Working last tested, one floppy is bad - KayPro 2X - NEC PC-8001A with 2 I/O Expansion Boxes and 1 dual floppy - Tons (maybe literally?) of DOS/Windows Laptops of various vintages - CRT Monitors (Mostly VGA, 17" and up, most not working, also have older vintages) - LCD Televisions/Monitors (Mostly 15-ish", have composite, possibly SVideo, and other inputs) - Parts and software for a lot of the above (and beyond), send me a note if there's something you are looking for I personally hate "make offer" posts myself, so this isn't one. You'll note there are no prices above because I haven't really gone through any of these items yet, let me know your interest, I'll send you pictures and details and we can go from there including me quoting an asking price. Pricing will be fair as I want to move inventory, and will also be considering trades for things I'm more interested in. As mentioned above, this isn't "make offer" as much as it is "motivate me to get you details on something". Things I'm looking for in-trade --------------------------------------- - Sun CRT Monitor with 13W3 Connector - Next Monitor (No idea exactly WHAT I really need here, I have a NextStation I want to use it with) - Apple Lisa 2 (I don't need a keyboard, doesn't have to be working) - Apple Profile Drive (Need not be working) - Toshiba Libretto Stuff (Specifically the PCMCIA Floppy) - HP 200LX (Or similar in that series) Parts - Vintage Laptops of all varieties - Commodore Stuff (Especially diagnostic tools, aside from the standard dead-test carts and whatnot) Thanks for looking, see you at the airing of grievances. -Todd

Turns out a lot of old keyboards used now-prized keyswitches from ALPS. People buy old Apple or SGI keyboards for the feel of the keyswitches, and strip them out to make USB keyboards. For touch typists and certain personality types - or for gamers who want quick and sure action - these things matter. I sell keyswitches, all the time. But I bought a couple of used Razer BlackWidow Ultimate keyboards, for modern use. I'm using one now, 2014 year. Depending on year, they either use Cherry keyswitches (various flavors) or a Chinese knockoff. Some models are backlit, some in variable colors. Razer is/was a big name in gaming keyboards; there's copies of their keyboards too, they even copy themselves. Now keycaps, that's another matter. There's interest in those too. Evan, you might have to get keycaps separate from the keyboard, I dunno about that gel-cap stuff. Seems to be a thing. I can't "log in" into "massdrop", I guess their "not-kewl detector" figured out I was over 60 and blocked me. So Mark Whittington's response seems plausible to me. Reading the razer Web site may be informative, or sites that describe their variations. Sales/giveaways at Festivus
by Evan Koblentz 20 Nov '18

20 Nov '18

Everyone, Several people asked Jeff B. and I about the policy for selling/giving away stuff at Festivus. It's pretty simple. - Make sure you ask/tell Jeff B. ahead of time. We will endeavor to have as many tables as possible, but it's not fair if you show up with a carload of stuff and complain about lack of space. :) - Unlike at VCF East, the "on topic" rules at Festivus is VERY loose. Bring whatever you want if it's cool and/or nerdy. - One strict rule: come get any items of yours that aren't taken by Sunday afternoon. VCF and InfoAge do NOT want your crap :) nor do we want to be responsible for throwing it away. Thanks for understanding. - Your friendly Festivus management

Kids / guests @ Festivus
by Evan Koblentz 20 Nov '18

20 Nov '18

Everyone, A few people inquired privately about guests/kids at Festivus, so we (Jeff B. and I) decided to send a list-wide message with the answer. Bring anyone who fits in: your kids, spouse, significant other, and retro/tech-minded friends. (Keep in mind that everyone will be charged the same $10/person event fee. I pay it too.) Also PLEASE put everyone's name on the sign-up form at least a few days ahead of time. Please don't surprise us with three extra people, even if they're people we already know: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CYLtFeyBlKwX7h2ohfXz421hFQjZTPPAkdV… With kids, use your judgment, ex.: kids who need supervising probably should not be there late Saturday night when we are all drinking and such. It's cool to bring your good friend who works in an IT department (etc.) or anyone who is into vintage computers. We don't recommend bringing people who do not share such interests. Thanks for understanding. Direct any questions to Jeff B. or yours truly.

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] how about a lovely vintage printer for that computer :-)
by systems_glitch 19 Nov '18

I've got two of these, one in case the other breaks (hah! yeah, right). Excellent printers. As Dave said, you can still get ribbons for most of these things. I bought two 6-pack boxes of Nu-Kote ribbons for my old TTX daisy wheel printer a year or so ago, probably a lifetime supply unless I start running some sort of business form on them. Along those lines, I'm still running an old HP LaserJet 4 as my main printer here, I've tried to replace it 3 or 4 times, and all of its would-be replacements have died. I finally had Ian go through it, apparently all of the roller assemblies and everything are not only available, but pretty cheap! > I bought 100 new MMJ connectors Surprisingly, a bunch of telecom providers still have these in stock. Until recently, Vnetek (the folks that, eventually, ended up with DEC's small networks stuff) still carried the 100-pack under the original DEC part number. I threw some in on the last order from Vnetek, apparently that was the last of their MMJ connectors. Thanks, Jonathan On Mon, Nov 19, 2018 at 12:15 PM Sentrytv via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > I sent a reply I'm interested > > Mike Rosen > > Sent from: > My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device. > > > On Nov 19, 2018, at 8:22 AM, Jeffrey Brace via vcf-midatlantic < > vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > > > If no one else wants it, then I will take it! I even found DEC LA34 ribbons a few weeks ago and am about to order a few. In fact this applies to a great many things that people assume are somehow unavailable because they've not personally purchased them for many years. A good example is MMJ connectors. I bought 100 new MMJ connectors from a cabling supplier (not a surplus dealer!) a few weeks ago. They actually showed up, and they're actually the right thing. Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 19 Nov '18

19 Nov '18

We had a nice group of visitors today from a Pennsylvania museum of industry. They took a thorough tour and stayed for a while. Bill I. escorted them around the campus. Adam and Tony both did warehouse projects. I helped before/after museum hours. Today's assorted warehouse accomplishments: - Cleared a whole shelving unit from the Commodore aisle. During the past few months, that aisle got condensed from 10 units down to 7 units by meticulously assessing what we do/don't need. - Added several Amiga computers to the surplus category. - Remember I posted a while ago about the AT&T "Counterpoint" never-released Unix workstations? They'd been living in various places of the unsorted area. Now they have their very own shelving unit in the sorted area. - Figured out a way to make room for a whole extra aisle in the sorted side! It'll be mostly for DEC, Epson, HP, and Heathkit. - Sorted some books and software. - There's a Mac SE in the surplus area. We happened to have a spare Mac SE original box. We made them into an item. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

I don't know about that particular model, but often enough, yes! There weren't a lot of different mechanisms, so the ribbons were fairly common (I can still get ribbons for my ImageWriter II, though I don't know if I could still get color ones). They're still used a number of places that require impact printing, particularly for multipart forms. Godbout Static (RAM) But Not Lost
by Herb Johnson 16 Nov '18

16 Nov '18

My recent post about Bill Godbout's passing, somewhat conflated two men; of course, Bill Godbout of Compupro/Viasyn/Godbout Computers. And, a man he worked with on the IEEE-696 specification, George Morrow who also produced S-100 boards as Morrow; George passed in 2003. It's hard for me to think about one person, without thinking about the other. They and others worked in the Oakland CA area, built early microcomputers, shared parts and customers and companies. Their S-100 products were of similar good quality and comparable in kind. Bill Godbout had other accomplishments of course. I'm sorry if anyone was disappointed in my effort to honor Bill Godbout while remembering both. However, the general tenor of my remarks is the same, and no apologies needed for why such persons and companies are to be remembered. I'm working on a better version of these remarks on my Web site, as part of my coverage of Morrow, Compupro and other S-100 companies of the era. A Web search for those will find the document. At this time, it's more important to consider the loss of Bill Godbout. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Normally we open at 1pm, but InfoAge scheduled a school tour for 10:30am today so I arrived around 10 and found Ian waiting outside! There was a miscommunication and I wasn't expecting him. It worked out fine: we built a ramp of his design to get the many VAX 9000 racks off their pallets. We got two racks safely down, and then decided more/stronger people (vs. me) are needed to do the rest. Then we moved on to assessing the Prime 6550: Ian's been wanting to work on that one for several years. Didn't power anything today, but he now knows exactly what we have and what we need to make it run. There were also a few regular visitors today, most notably an older couple who spent a long time in our area and asked good questions.

I gave up at that point, figured it was some kind of XP limitation. I know from nothings about networking protocols. But this matters a bit, there's still commercial stuff (point of sale, business systems, embedded stuff) still running XP or Win2K, etc. Bill, my bet is any proxy you'd come up with, would run on a Rasp Pi. just a convenient platform. Even those have a serial port, for some really ancient system (say Win 3.1/WFW). If you come up with something, put the word out. Herb -- Herbert R. Godbout Static (RAM) But Not Lost
by Herb Johnson 14 Nov '18

14 Nov '18

I got the news about Bill Godbout from Evan, a few days ago. Today I got a request from a reporter/blogger for a Godbout catalog image. I don't have any of his early catalogs; there are of course magazine ad-pages from Godbout. Can anyone share a PDF of one of his catalogs? What I sent, was the cover shot of the 1987 Dec Morrow Owners Review, a magazine published to support the Morrow MD series desktop CP/M systems. Did ja know, Morrow produced real PC's? We mostly remember his S-100 cards, and older engineers remember his sales of components before that. I recently obtained a Morrow MD-15 system, with a pile of Morrow MOR magazines. I'm trying to get the hard-drive running, but it boots 128K CP/M right now. I'll show it on my Web site in December. Morrow also co-authored the IEEE-696 specification; essentially the Morrow/Compupro S-100 bus architecture. 16 bit data, 24 bit address - enough to run 386-class systems into the 1990's. A lot of MS-DOS development work was done with S-100 systems; video processing systems at TV stations too. That bus did good work for a long time. Morrow and Compupro S-100 cards were well built, well documented; most can still run today. A dual 8085/88 CPU can run MS-DOS and two flavors of CP/M. No small feat in 1981 or thereabouts. Those cards were produced before MS-DOS existed; designers had 8088's ready to use but no CP/M to run them, people like Morrow and others. This forced the creation of a DOS which became MS-DOS, a story often told. So, there's a fundamental reason to remember Bill Godbout, and the work he and his cohorts did. They worked at a time when resources were SCARCE, not abundant. There were no computers to help design other computers (unless you borrowed time from a university). I doubt most Morrow hardware was designed on CAD PC layout systems; most microcomputer boards were hand-taped, red and blue tape for two-sided boards! Chips were not cheap, PC boards were not cheap to produce - no offshore boards in the 1970's! And most people and businesses weren't wealthy in the 1970's. IBM sold PC's in the 80's to the Fortune 500, the 500 biggest companies in America (the world, same thing). That was much easier after Godbout et all did the groundwork. The microcomputer revolution was a bottom-up proposition, not a top-down. Bill Godbout and his colleagues, remind us how to do HARD work, start from LIMITED resources, to build an industry, and to make a market, from near-zero. There will be another time, when we will have to do that again, start from little. Do you think 21st century engineers and programmers, know how to do that? This is why history of technology matters; to preserve how they did, what they did. Do you think laptops and smart phones will run 30, 40 years from now? Or be repairable when they aren't? Another lesson to preserve. And that's my long view. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. AIM-65 Like Clone Project
by Henry S. Courbis 13 Nov '18

13 Nov '18

Greetings and Salutations People Of The List: I hobbyist recently contacted me about a project they are considering which is a clone of the AIM-65. However I'm mostly useless to help since I have little idea how the system works, or should work. Sure I can help clone it, but that's the "simple" part. Being able to check if it's working is kind of where the magic happens. Putting parts on a board... not so much. For a starting point they have an old unit which doesn't work. We found this link for schematics: http://www.originalwoodworks.com/aim65/ They have checked the PSU and some obvious things like this, as well as replaced some of the standard ICs which were suspected to be troublesome. We don't have any ROM code to validate the ROMs to or to burn new ones. And we're both kind of in the dark as to how the system should even work, which is kind of the fun of this adventure. If you can't break a toe and bruise a shin while stumbling around in the dark for the light switch, then what real fun is it? So anyone have any advice or feedback as to getting the system to at least want to seem alive, what known trouble ares there are, to yell at us for being silly geese, etc? Please email us offlist (his email to CC: tld10091 AT gmail.com) Thanks! Henry S. Workshop Report, System Source, Hunt Valley, MD, Sun Nov 11th
by svcatitc＠aol.com 13 Nov '18

All; I figured I would fill us all in on how it went on Sun: Due to family responsibilities, I got there about 1pm. Johathan Sturges pulled into the lot the same time as I did and we commented on "timing is everything". A good crowd. The usual suspects were there. Bill DegnanBill DromgooleDuane CrapsAlex JacocksDave Gesswein Along with a bunch I did not know because of residential distance and being a semi-newbee to the group, however we were all friends at that point working on our hobby. Bill D handed me an Epson dot matrix printer that I plan to use for the "soda can crusher" project I am working on for East.ON that note, I started resurrecting an IBM 5170 '286 for the processor to control the testing machine. I got the machine taken out of it's stock chassis, and mounted it in it's new all Plexiglas ATX case, to display the early days of the 286 and technicals. It booted to BASIC the first shot! Yeah! Boy did I forget a lot since the days of fooling with this stuff on a daily basis. Jonathan S found a link to the SETUP program to talk to the BIOS of the above referenced machine. So that will help a bunch. Duane Craps was showing me the backplane of the UNIVAC 1218 and how intricate the snap in pins were used for the interconnects. I remembered using such connectors on MUX chassis when I worked at EAI in the early 1980's. Dave G was working on some PDP model. Jonathan was working on a Tandy 100 (I believe, don't quote me on that). Alex J can fill us in on what he was doing, and what some of the other members were working on. Lastly, Bob Roswell gave the interested a tour of his museum. What a class act! He has already positioned some of the racks of his VAX 9000 in the museum. At the end of the day, a bunch of us went to a local pizza joint for dinner to wrap up the festivities. Many Thanks go out to Alex J for organizing the event. Greater Many Thanks go out to Bob Roswell for hosting us in his fantastic museum setting. Thank you to all who attended. It was great fun. Bill Inderrieden

This is definitely a great loss for the microcomputing community. I bought a 4K memory board kit (similar to the one on your page) from him back around '77 or so. I learned a lot from that board. This may be a dumb question, but I've always wondered if I've been pronouncing his name correctly all these years. Is it pronounced the way it appears to be spelled, "god-bought" or does it come from a language where the 't' would be silent or some other variation? TIA, BLS

Sad news for sure. I remember hearing him speak at VCF West in 2000. As he started, he said something to the effect of, "Nobody here better be recording anything I see or I will take out my revolver and shoot them!" I slowly reached into my bag and pressed pause on my minidisc recorder. :) Andy On Tue, Nov 13, 2018 at 8:35 AM Bob Aviles via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > Sorry to hear the news, rest in peace. > > Bobby > On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, 12:31:44 AM EST, Evan Koblentz via > vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > > >> There wasn't much online about Bill Godbout so I posted a few things > >> here > >> for those who did not know of Bill Godbout and his contribution to > >> computing. > >> > >> http://vintagecomputer.net/browse_thread.cfm?id=733 > >> > >> Bill > >> > > The article says he died November 11th, but according to the poster on > > alt.folklore.computers he died November 8th... > > > 8th is correct. I have been meaning to set up a simple proxy for older machines that don't use SSL at all, or SSH. Just have not gotten around to it. Not too complicated I don't think but I have not done it yet so I can't say with 100% certainty until I do. When I do I will make the service available somehow. Hello Introduction
by Tom McNicholas 12 Nov '18

Evan suggested I post a hello and background not sure of length or detail is the norm,, so here goes Retired a few years ago but still on the board of directors after a 45 year stint with a local electronics manufacturing company doing DOD work. during the 45 years did everything from testing, QA, engineering and plant manager Prior to the 45 year stint was in the USAF working on VHF, UHF and teaching then a couple of DOD manufacturing companies working on SSB transmitters, Radar, Sonar and microwave., During the 70,s at work used the Apple II and later the Mac during the 80,ss and at that time started using the commodore 64 and Radio Shack 100 at home latter moving to the 128 and then building IBM clones from parts bought at computer shows. Now all I do is just buy them ,too many as per my wife. . Presently have a small collection of vintage computers around 25 which I am sure is nothing compared to other members of the group. But I am looking forward to meeting others in the group who share my interest in vintage computers. My only other interests outside of family and grandchildren are short wave radio and occasional riding on my Can Am trike. Regards Tom McNicholas Wall NJ

www locks out older browsers
by Jim Scheef 12 Nov '18

12 Nov '18

Hello all, After playing with an eMac running OS X 10.3 several months back, I let it sit for a few months. Now it can no longer open most common websites. So what changed while the machine was not even plugged in? After some investigation I realized that main-stream sites have changed their SSL to require TLS 1.2, mostly because it actually works. The result is that vintage browsers return an error similar to “cannot establish secure connection”. Forcing SSL by refusing to connect on port 80, these sites have locked out many vintage machines. So, what can be done? The obvious solution is to find a modern browser that runs on your vintage OS. This may require an OS upgrade (OS X 10.4 should run on the eMac) which allows running TenFourFox, which seems to include TLS 1.2. The irony that in the name of security, the machine used to invent the web (NeXT) may no longer be able to display it. Any thoughts? Jim

Museum Report 18-11-11 November 11, 2018

Good and steady busy day at the museum. About 2 dozen visitors in total today. In groups between 1 to 5 spread out throughout the day. Some of it was because of some World War I event in 9032-A, but mostly it was because it is cold day and this time of year things start to pick up again as people look for indoor things to do. Lots of nice visitors with medium to high interest. Some really knew their stuff. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

Vintage Server Racks FS or trade
by Jeffrey Golas 11 Nov '18

I have a vintage 1970s (or 60s?) server cabinet for sale. Good shape, blue filler panel on front and white panels on sides. Round hole, front panel can be removed. Breaker at bottom can be used as a power switch and is accesible from the front. Note that this is the rack only (anything else in pics is not for sale). Located in Blue Bell, PA (outside Philly) Best offer or trade for an interesting terminal or maybe s-100 boards? Bill, Indeed, I got your email, but just got home from vacation, this past weekend. I'm thrilled that you can make it! With you, we have 10 confirmed attendees, and 1 maybe. - Alex On Mon, Nov 5, 2018 at 8:37 AM Bill Inderrieden via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > Alex J.; > I responded to this request for last minute attendees "off list" on > Friday, so this is just a confirmation of that.
