OT: Laptop wanted
by Evan Koblentz 09 Nov '18

09 Nov '18

I love my Chromebook, but sometimes I want a regular laptop. Dell Latitude E6510 isn't cutting it anymore. It's a brick and only has 4MB memory. I'm looking for something lighter with modern-ish specs. The software doesn't matter because I will wipe it and install Linux. Also, as inexpensive as possible... Anyone have something suitable? Please reply off-list.

Supercomputer is all set!
by Evan Koblentz 08 Nov '18

08 Nov '18

I sent this message a few hours ago but it bounced somehow: Ian, Bill I., and myself all unloaded the VAX 9000 this morning. Diver Dan operated the forklift. A 28-foot trailer arrived here at 8am followed by another at 9am. There were 13 pallets on the first trailer and 12 on the second. Somehow, the space that we made in the warehouse yesterday and throughout the last few weeks was MORE than needed! We saved even more space after the delivery because Ian found a way to consolidate five of the new pallets onto others. Ian and I also discussed how to display at least part of the system in the museum. The simplest thing we can do is put the Cray YMP-EL back into storage and use the space for the 9000 main cabinet and maybe one peripheral cabinet. Side benefit: it would better match the StorageTek Timberwolf tape library than the Cray does. Here are some pictures: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1By6kUcofbhJfW6X3oMGOosStv85DPrpS/view?usp=… https://drive.google.com/file/d/1E-Q5xrsYXyjrZEZh92xIBhlStvvNUcRV/view?usp=… https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bEpSMzBEeOvuDnzPQ9Npc7iYmDhjZq8c/view?usp=… It took us a few pallets to get the hang of things this morning, but once we got going then everything went pretty well. There were no significant problems, just a couple of minor challenges that we solved on-the-fly, and no people/computers suffered any harm -- except our stomachs, which we cured with pizza. I can't wait to show this to you all in person at Festivus and beyond! Special thanks to our new best friends in Colorado and to the person who funded the transportation. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

Supercomputer arrived earlier than expected! Truck will be at the museum 7am sharp on Wednesday. They said it's 25 pallets. YIKES We made a lot of warehouse space but I'm going tomorrow and will clear as much extra space as possible. I will probably have to temporarily abandon some of our aisles and move racks together, making certain things inaccessible for a while. If anyone is available tomorrow afternoon/night or bright/early Wednesday, then let me know ASAP. Send me off-list replies only. (And for the love of cyber-gods, don't post about "I wish I could help but" or "I'll try to" .... firm commitments only please.)

We only had two visitors today, but they were good ones. Tom M. (age 81!) is a new member on this list; he's been to VCF East and lives near InfoAge. He got the full tour. Then another visitor, 31, took an even longer tour and asked tons of good questions. So it was busy today despite low overall attendance.

Surplus computers @ Festivus
by Evan Koblentz 01 Nov '18

01 Nov '18

Kelly and I spent about 5 hours working in the warehouse again today. We finished sorting/organizing the Tandy section (reduced from four overflowing shelving units to less than 3) and also the TI section (reduced from 1 overflowing unit to less than 1. We also moved all the surplus items including lots of Tandy/TI/Epson from a pallet onto a shelving unit, so that it's easier to move around between now and Festivus-time. (Another benefit is shelving units use less floor space than pallets, which means more room for THE BIG COMPUTER arriving next week.) Here's a picture of the surplus unit: https://tinyurl.com/ybjmalfp. What's for sale at Festivus: - Six Tandy Color Computers (various models) - Thirteen TI-99/4A computers (some white, some black/silver) - Two TI Peripheral Expansion Boxes - Nine Epson QX-10/QX-16 (I forget the exact breakdown) - Four Epson monitors and possible one more - One lonely Mac SE None of these are tested. NO TESTING OR TAKING APART WILL BE ALLOWED AT FESTIVUS -- we don't want people tearing into stuff at a social event. Donation amounts for this surplus hardware will be very low, but it's a gamble how they look/work on the inside. Honor system: please don't buy these just to flip them. Kelly not included...

Thanks for the update Herb (you're right a better subject!) FYI -- What the video shows is exactly what I got.... with all the manuals, original box, etc. (Penciled in on the box is a note about the possible memory issue.... the person was moving so I don't have follow on contact yet). It had an odd video cable set up (looks like an old BNC network connector with a Composite Jack. Not something I had seen before... and that was connected with some banana clips. I didn't receive any expansion cards :-( Nor an expansion interface...:-( The VIP is popular among COSMAC (RCA 1802 processor) enthusiasts. I can test it (I don't have a scope though) but wanted to know what people's experiences were with them, do they tend to hold up? (I know that I don't run Commodore VIC and 64's without a long test of any original power supplies...had and know of too many issues with them) I've also got to figure out how this video cable is supposed to be set up... one of the banana clips was off on one end...not sure if it was supposed to be connected or what. It also came with a number of tapes (which I suspect contain some saved programs...) so also have to figure out how the tape player connects. I haven't found a manual with general set up yet.... most are all about the chip and assembly listings for it. I've not gone thru them all yet. The video was helpful in learning more about it (was interesting to see that it had audio options and color board!) It didn't show it running, so I've still got to figure that out... Would really like to find the Tiny Basic card for this... Earl

Games ready for Festivus 2018
by Jeffrey Brace 27 Oct '18

27 Oct '18

I was able to test Giana Sisters for the C64 (think Super Mario Bros, but with different sprites) Also got Bomb Mania working, which is a C64 - 4 player game. Yes, 4 player. I have a device that plugs into the user port which allows two more joystick controllers. It's a fun game. Working on getting other 4 player games Ian is bringing his usual suite of games: Atari 7800 (2600 & 7800 games), Sega Genesis, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, etc. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

Festivus Request: Lunatic Fringe on Macintosh
by Jeffrey Brace 23 Oct '18

23 Oct '18

I would really love it if someone could bring a Macintosh with Lunatic Fringe on it. Lunatic Fringe is an After Dark game. I can't remember if it came with After Dark or More After Dark. A color Mac would be preferable such as an LC II, but anything that works is fine. Who can bring it? -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

Epson! Tandy! Full weekend report...
by Evan Koblentz 22 Oct '18

22 Oct '18

Very good weekend at the museum! Yesterday and today were slow, visitor-wise, but we did lots of other great stuff. Saturday: I brought the Mimeo to the 4th annual Jersey Shore Makerfest. VCF table was busy most of the day. Educated lots of people about the history of Apple and about VCFed/InfoAge. Also got a good lead for a potentially interesting artifact. Today: Kelly organized our Epson collection and most of our Tandy collection. Before, the Epson collection took up 4/5th of one shelving unit and parts of two pallets. Now it's all on a single shelving unit and we put aside eight surplus computers that will be available at Festivus first, workshops (Jan, Feb, March, April) second, and VCF East (May) third. Here's a picture of the surplus machines. (We did not yet sort through the keyboards; no guarantee of those being available.) https://tinyurl.com/y7bh2nq5 No, we didn't leave them stacked like that. The stack was only for the picture. They're very safely in two piles of four computers each. Here is the newly pared-down Epson collection -- "Kelly not included": https://tinyurl.com/ycxgv8tr -- these are what we're keeping. On the Tandy side, before we had four over-stuff shelving units; now it's three, not counting the Model 1 and a CoCo (model 2 or 3, I forget which) both in the museum. I didn't get pictures. Surplus-wise, there are four of five CoCos (models 1, 2, 3). Thank you Kelly for your hard work today.

OT: Vintage Tektronix 465 Oscilloscope needs some TLC
by Bob Shuster 19 Oct '18

19 Oct '18

I recently picked up a non-working Tektronix 465 Oscilloscope - in great physical shape I might add - in the hopes that I might resuscitate it. My hope was that it was a fuse or the power supply, something I could deal with, but it is apparently more than that. Does anyone on the list have experience with these that might be able to help or otherwise give some advice? - Bob

Anybody recognize these boards?
by William Sudbrink 18 Oct '18

18 Oct '18

I was browsing through estate sales and came across this one: https://www.estatesales.net/VA/Arlington/22206/2040459 If you scroll to image 118 you will see some dusty/cobwebbed circuit boards, stored in a wooden "frame". Looks like discrete transistor logic. Also, a resistor sales/storage drawer set for OHMITE "Little Devils" a few pictures before.
