Sorry to hear, that's a great loss. Always nice to hear about positive reactions from visitors. You're absolutely right, these are the type of people that help us. I neglected to mention two things. First is on a sad note. Those of you who may have toured through the other museums at Infoage over the years, particularly the military dioramas, would have likely met Ray Morgan, the WWII veteran who volunteered there often. Unfortunately Ray passed away this past Tuesday at the age of 96. He was an awesome man to talk to, and served with distinction at the battles of Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima to name a couple. (His stories were truly engaging about his time in the military) The viewing is tomorrow evening at Ely’s in Neptune. https://m.legacy.com/obituaries/mycentraljersey/obituary.aspx?n=raymond-b-m… Secondly, and on a much brighter note, Bill I. Stopped by for awhile at the beginning of the day, so he and I got to shoot the breeze for awhile as we had not seen each other for the past few months. It is amazing how even the quiet days (and we always get some of them) can be some of the most productive ones. That single visitor from the group showed more interest and genuine enthusiasm than I could have hoped for, and was talking about his next visit when he’d have more time to see other areas and bring family/friends back to see the computers as well. That one visitor can make the day, even if no one else shows up. That combined with the Korean War veteran and family I walked with over to the vehicle museum (he needed some help getting up the walkway and into the door) were excited to find out about the other museums (they bypassed most of Infoage to get to the vehicles) and were already planning their next visit. Those are the types of visitors that are the future of our museum and Infoage, and it’s always a satisfying experience to deal with those types of engaged visitors. Tony

Museum report 10/14
by Tony Bogan 15 Oct '18

15 Oct '18

Got to the museum around 1:30 today. A large group was scheduled to arrive at Infoage at 3, so I figured I’d get up there as early as I could and have the museum open for other visitors as well. The plan was to split the 40-50 visitors into four groups who would then rotate through the museums every half hour. Needless to say that never quite happened! The group members arrived piecemeal, some never came, and a large group or two were put together and never left the main building. Myself and Dan next door in the Military Vehicle Museum had one visitor from the group walk down to us. He was a very interested Computer Engineer who spent a solid 30+ minutes in the museum with me. He was extremely interested throughout the tour and was glad he left the group and came down the road! I directed several people earlier in the day to the vehicle museum and other areas of Infoage, none of which wished to come see the VCF museum. I even tried to lure them in with promises of Model Railroads and Wireless Operators displays, but to no avail. Suffice to say I was pleased my single visitor for the day was a very good one! I’m also pleased to say it’s so much fun being able to see more and more of the machines up and running for visitors. All the major micros on the first shelf are running (Apple II, trs 80, PET, 5150, Lisa, Mac, C64, AT&T Unix PC, NeXT Cube, Etc) plus the HP in the mini section as well as the Univac (Bill D, we need to find out why the diagnostic you showed us how to run gives a program fault now) Can’t wait to see even more machines running in the future!!! Tony P.S. Corey/Evan I need to do some work on the Apple II keyboard, it’s getting a bit temperamental. Sent from my iPhone

IBM Series/1 Collecting?
by Burning Image 13 Oct '18

13 Oct '18

Hi. All: Over the years, I've owned many systems, going back to 8080-based hardware. I've also had more than a few PDP-11 and MicroVAX systems. I'm now looking for something a little different and could use some guidance. In the early eighties, I worked for a company in NJ that refurbished IBM mainframe systems. They also sold Series/1 mini's. One of the partners was even developing the hardware interface and software for a cartridge tape backup system. For some reason, I now have the urge to play with a Series/1 system of my own. Thinking back, I've seen very little - if anything - about someone owning one. Perhaps there's a good reason for this. I'm also not seeing too much on used systems, peripherals, or software - like languages - I could use to develop some applications. Perhaps there's a good reason for that, too. Is it worth pursuing the acquisition of this old system or is it best left alone? Any constructive advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Cory Sickles

Asante EN/SC adaptor?
by Herb Johnson 12 Oct '18

12 Oct '18

People are mentioning my name, regarding Mac SCSI to Ethernet adapters, because I have sold them in the past: http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/m_net.html I don't have any currently, and of course I can be asked privately. I'm interested in buying and in selling them. Many 68K Mac owners want these to "get their Mac on the Internet", so they are not cheap. An AAUI Friendlynet adapter was mentioned. That's Apple's AAUI to RJ45 Ethernet adapter I believe. That's not an Ethernet controller device, it's a mechanical cabling adapter. Herb -- Herbert R. Looking for Tandy 2000 disk and keyboard
by Richard Cini 12 Oct '18

12 Oct '18

All – A friend of mine is trying to restore his Tandy 2000 system, so I sent him a bunch of floppy images in IMD format, but it seems that one of them is corrupted. Specifically, I’m looking for the Videotex Plus disk (26-5260). I also just realized that Bitsavers doesn’t have a Tandy/RS section so at least I want to collect my disk images and upload them there. If anyone has any other disks, please send them to me so I can upload them As a side note, he gave me one of his spare 2000HD systems but it has no keyboard. I don’t suppose anyone has a spare they would/could part with? If so, just let me know. As always, thanks! Rich -- Rich Cini http://www.classiccmp.org/cini http://www.classiccmp.org/altair32

I was at the museum both days this weekend. We had a small but steady amount of visitors. Steve A. came by yesterday for a while. Jeff B. and I both helped with InfoAge's Halloween event last night. Jeff visited again today to help me with some docent planning. Laura helped in the warehouse tonight from 6:30-8:30. We moved some things around to make space for an upcoming large artifact...

Unloading help needed week of 10/29
by Evan Koblentz 11 Oct '18

11 Oct '18

It's about 95% definite that we are receiving a VERY LARGE computer around Halloween-time. I should know 100% sometime tomorrow. I do not yet know which day it will arrive: a truck is bringing it to us from the mountain time zone. It's leaving its current home on the 25th and then I will be able to track it. Estimate is middle of that week. I gave a heads-up to one of InfoAge's forklift drivers, but I will need help!! It's going to be hard work unloading an 18-wheeler and the driver isn't going to wait all day for us. Who can I count on to help that day? Don't leave me to attempt this solo. Everything should be on casters or pallets. I don't anticipate much lifting, but it's the quantity that I fear.

We have a modest amount of visitors today. I had an hour between the museum closing and the IA staff meeting, so I did some warehouse things. There was a part of George that I put with the rest of the analog computing items, and there was a teletype table that goes with an older teletype we already donated to NJARC, so I gave them the table too. These two steps cleared a whopping 4 square feet of warehouse space :) but every bit helps! ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

Asante EN/SC adaptor?
by David Riley 10 Oct '18

Hey all, I have an interest in getting an Asante EN/SC adaptor (SCSI-to-Ethernet adaptor for Mac), and I suspect at least one of you (*cough* Herb *cough*) might have one I could acquire or purchase for a modest sum. Any version is fine; regular, mini or micro. Ideally I'd like a working one. If it helps, it's for the greater good: I want to reverse engineer and replicate it, as well as try and write some drivers for NetBSD, since it's one of the only reliable ways to get early PowerBooks on Ethernet. - Dave

Festivus 2018 - Movie room
by Jeffrey Brace 10 Oct '18

10 Oct '18

So the last two years we didn't really do movies, but I'm considering it again. The reason is that we don't use the big dorm room (called the women's bunk room), so we can setup our 100 inch projector screen, lights off and project movies or TV onto it in that room. This way if you want to go see a movie or TV show (i.e. Whiz Kids) you can do it. If you don't want to see movies, then you can stay in the main festivus area. I've used these machines, they are quite nice. The screen doesn't have the best viewing angle, but the keyboard is OK and it has a Synaptics touchpad that works great. They're also light, and fanless. The amazing thing is they were around $200 new! I'm actually using the PC version of this, loaded with CloudReady to get ChromeOS. For light browsing / email, etc, they work great. -J On Wed, Oct 3, 2018 at 5:44 PM Sentrytv via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > Mike R > Just say where to pick up > Weekend would be good > > Sent from: > My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device. > > > On Oct 3, 2018, at 5:29 PM, William Dudley via vcf-midatlantic < > vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > > > I'm hooked up with a private school that is "getting rid" of > approximately > > 100 > > HP Chromebooks. Help me evaluate the Epson and Tandy computers
by Evan Koblentz 04 Oct '18

04 Oct '18

VCF has too many Epson microcomputers and possibly too much Tandy hardware also. We need someone to spend a day here (in the next few weeks, but sooner is better) and show me what we should keep vs. what should go out. Volunteers?

OFF TOPIC: cheap HP Chromebooks available
by William Dudley 03 Oct '18

03 Oct '18

I'm hooked up with a private school that is "getting rid" of approximately 100 HP Chromebooks. Model is 11-p010nr so you can google the specs, but the short version is: Intel CPU, 32G solid state drive, I assume ChromeOS. We've offered the school $10 each for these. I just want to save them from the landfill. This summer the same school put a bunch of recent laptops in a dumpster, which I didn't find out about until later. I have gotten laptops from them before at similar prices, but never in enough quantity that it was challenging to get rid of them. I will sell them at cost, plus shipping if you're not local to I-195 corridor in NJ. Email me off list if interested. wfdudley(a)gmail.com Bill Dudley (who has donated a few things to the museum over the years)

Small rescue needed in southern New Hampshire
by Evan Koblentz 03 Oct '18

There's an original Compaq Deskpro 8086 for us in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The owner does not have the experience to pack it (especially the CRT) and I've heard a lot of horror stories about broken monitors in shipping lately. Can anyone pick up the system?

There is a nice set of 1968 Army data processing books on eBay, item #302856293921. Can someone buy these for the museum?

I loved it in college 91-96 and afterwards for a few years. Easy to use. Efficient. I suspect I'm not the only person in the group who has big Eudora love. (Am I the only person in the group who still uses it?) Anyway, it's been a great fantasy among us masses of Eudora hold-outs that the source would finally be released and then that somebody would manage to update this never-yet-surpassed email tool that was abandoned 12 years ago. We've seen many replacement projects begun and failed, including one by the original Eudora authors. I somehow missed the May 2018 announcement that the Computer History Museum acquired the source code and full rights to the final version of Eudora. The catch is that many of the third-party libraries are excluded, so they'd need to be reimplemented. And another catch is that it used custom-modified MFC extensions, but they did get the source code for that. Anyway, here's the announcement (and link to the 458mb of source code), for you to drool over: http://www.computerhistory.org/atchm/the-eudora-email-client-source-code/ Truly one of the greatest pieces of software ever written. - Ken (written on a patched copy of Eudora)

We haven't done anything because not enough people replied. There are two full months between now and Festivus. I see two realistic possibilities: we could meet at a restaurant someplace central-ish (mid/late October), or simply honor him as part of Festivus (early December) -- he was sad that he couldn't go last year.) https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XW53NHS Voting will be open until early next week.

OT: Looking for a Software Developer position in the Monmouth County, NJ area
by Bryan Pope 29 Sep '18

29 Sep '18

Good afternoon all, I have been a member of the VCF since before it was MARCH and lived in the New Jersey area from 2002 - 2012. After attending this past VCF East, it reminded me how much I missed InfoAge, the computer museum and especially all of the people I knew and how much it was all a part of me. Now I would like to move back to the Monmouth County area to be with my friends, make new ones and do what I can at InfoAge and the computer museum. So would anyone know of companies in the area that are looking for Software Developers? Here are the basics of my recent experience/education: - 2.5 years using C#/Javascript/PHP/MySQL, used Kanban/Agile methodology - 2015 received Honors Diploma for a Video Game Design & Development course with a 4.0 GPA (also received the Excellence Award) - This included Unity/C#, Javascript, DirectX, C++, Java, Math and Physics - 8 years C programming under QNX Thank-you all in advance for anything you can do to help me make this a reality! Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 28 Sep '18

28 Sep '18

I was at the museum yesterday and today. IA was open special today because the tradition in the local Hasidic community (Lakewood, NJ, which is close to InfoAge) seems to be that they all bring their families to visit. It happened last year and this year too. We had about 100 people combined yesterday and today, all families.

ReActiveMicro - Project: HDMI Adapter
by Henry S. Courbis 27 Sep '18

27 Sep '18

Hello everyone! If you follow the ReActiveMicro facebook page or site blog you may be aware of our Retro HDMI Adapter project. The concept has grown from the need of a total HDMI solution for the Apple II, however we plan to cover the rest of the retro systems out there in one well designed external adapter. The Adapter is planned to be SBC linux based and open source. Currently on the linux side of things I could use some help and I would like to try and keep things within the Retro Community. Yes, this is a paying gig if that helps motivate someone to help. We currently have a display program which runs on the SBC side and handels the incoming data stream from a custom video input adapter board. However it's slow and needs a rewrite by someone who has some time and experience so I can continue with proof of concept testing. The idea with using a SBC is we can tap in to the GPU and OpenCL. So experience with linux, video, and OpenCL is probably a good idea. However I don't mind working with intermediate users looking to hone their skills. Anyone willing to help can contact me off thread to discuss details. I will send our current sample program for code review, and a data stream capture to help base the new program on. Don't need anything fancy. Just a simple but efficient and fast program we can edit when needed as the data stream changes. Thanks! Henry S. (cross-posed to cctalk, vcf-midatlantic, and AHCS lists) Imagine my surprise when I was catching up on my daily Vice News diet today - watching today's and yesterday's episodes - when VCF Mid-Atlantics's own Corey Cohen, InfoAge, and a VCFed banner popped up! They did a story on an auction house and verification of an original Apple 1 board up for sale. They called on Corey and his expertise to verify the condition of the board! Way to go Corey! If you want to check out the segment, I've hosted it here: https://www.atlhcs.org/links/Vice_Apple_Auction.ts Enjoy! -Alan H.
