FS: Prototype Glitch Works Ohio Scientific Universal RAM Board
by systems_glitch 23 Aug '17

23 Aug '17

link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/272817996082 I'm selling some of the prototype boards for my GW-OSI-RAM1 Universal 128 KW RAM board. This board provides up to 128 KW (64 KW without memory management) of static RAM on the Ohio Scientific bus. It supports a 12-bit word size and is compatible with the Ohio Scientific 560Z "Processor Lab" in PDP-8 mode. It also includes a prototyping area, and a header for mezzanine display boards. Included with the auction is a Hex Lamp Register and an Octal Lamp Register, which can be mounted directly to the GW-OSI-RAM1 or used remote on a cable (e.g. for a front panel). This is a pre-production board, the most significant difference is that it lacks a corner mounting hole, which can be drilled if needed (no circuit traces run under its location). The other differences are minor. See auction link for full description! Thanks, Jonathan

OT: my own Pi
by Evan Koblentz 23 Aug '17

23 Aug '17

Successfully booted my Pi Zero W into Raspbian tonight. Connected it to my living room TV (native HDMI) plus a keyboard and mouse. Now what? It's a little Linux computer.... although Corey says I shouldn't think of it that way. No need to serve tablet content at home :) so I could use (real) ideas about what to do with it. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

Monitor needed for museum
by Evan Koblentz 22 Aug '17

22 Aug '17

Everyone, We need an HDMI monitor for a permanent connection to the Pi that powers our tablet content. Ideally it should be smaller than 19" (so it can fit on a rack shelf) but not less than, say, 15" (so we can actually read it). I tried using a known-working HDMI-VGA adapter. But it's not supported by the Pi. Does anyone have a suitable screen to donate, or can someone buy it for us? This is something we need quickly. ________________________ Evan Koblentz, director Vintage Computer Federation A 501(c)(3) educational non-profit Evan(a)vcfed.org +1 (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation

by Evan Koblentz 22 Aug '17

I'm reading this: https://www.modmypi.com/blog/how-to-add-an-rca-tv-connector-to-a-raspberry-… I cut one end off a generic yellow-tipped RCA wire and stripped back the insulation. Insider there's one insulated wire (yellow) and one bare copper wire. Which is the positive/negative? Rest assured, I'm experimenting on my own Pi, not the museum's. :) ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

OT: Solar Eclipse sunglasses -- legit, better and still cheap
by Herb Johnson 18 Aug '17

18 Aug '17

I was an amateur astronomer. I advise against the referenced Harbor Freight goggles. Here's reliable information about Welder's glass. - Herb https://www.harborfreight.com/ etc. Set comes with both flip front and permanent #10 lens.... https://www.space.com/36941-solar-eclipse-eye-protection-guide.html Welding goggles quote from Rick Fienberg, press officer for the American Astronomical Society (AAS), said "There is a particular circumstance in which [welding goggles are] safe," Fienberg said. "We don't recommend it because it's too easy to get the wrong kind of welding filter." Only goggles made for electric arc welding can be used to observe the sun, and they must have a shade scale number of 12 or higher. Shade 13 is ideal for solar viewing, but that shade is typically not sold in stores, Fienberg added. -------------------- https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety Additional Safety Information Viewing with Protection -- Experts suggests that one widely available filter for safe solar viewing is welders glass of sufficiently high number. The only ones that are safe for direct viewing of the Sun with your eyes are those of Shade 12 or higher. These are much darker than the filters used for most kinds of welding. If you have an old welder's helmet around the house and are thinking of using it to view the Sun, make sure you know the filter's shade number. If it's less than 12 (and it probably is), don't even think about using it to look at the Sun. Many people find the Sun too bright even in a Shade 12 filter, and some find the Sun too dim in a Shade 14 filter — but Shade 13 filters are uncommon and can be hard to find. -- Herbert R. PSA: Amiga 600 and Amiga 1200 can have leaky capacitors that eat PCB

Learned the hard way after trying to use my Amiga 600 this weekend to archive some software. Green screen. Figured it was PSU. Got home, popped the RF shield off and sigh. Caps leaked electrolyte and it ate through some traces. Had no idea this was an issue, I know about the Lithium batteries in the A2000/A3000/A4000 and A500 RTC module. Going to have to try to repair, almost thinking about paying someone else to do it if there is someone reputable in the USA. :-( - Ethan

This is a better option and it doesn't cost much, only $6 its not the gimmicky stuff that you see sold in stores, and its the same material specified for welding masks to filter the solar light. It's the same specification used by astronomers for their telescope equipment but these are welding goggles, so it's light weight and costs less, These are found at Harbor Freight and other places with tools pass it on https://www.harborfreight.com/welding/welding-helmets/2-piece-welding-goggl… <https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.harborfreight.com%2Fwelding%…> -- _ ____ / \__/ Scotty, We Need More Power !! \_/ _\__ Aye, Cap'n, but we've only got 80 col's !!

What's a good way to upgrade my Amiga 1000
by Dan Roganti 17 Aug '17

What's a good way to upgrade my Amiga 1000. I like to get it setup which would let me download Amiga software online and transfer the files to my A1000 as I do with my C64 and Apple][. Is there something like the uIEC with the SD card from Jim Brain at Retro Innovations. This is the best one I've seen so far. Here you just swap the SD card after you download any software online, and pop this into the uIEC plugged into the C64. I still use it together with my cross-platform dev when coding new stuff. or is it more like ADTPro for the Apple][ by using the serial cable I heard it's a lot easier to find something for the later models which don't rely on Kickstart disks. We had a few scattered visitor groups today. I got a parts bin at Harbor Freight and put it on the workbench. Bottom few rows are now full of screws and nuts and bolts and washers. Not as impressive as IXR's electronic components :) but at least it cleans up our workbench. The majority of the bin drawers are empty for future use. I noticed that two of our 15-ish tablets were misconfigured. They were set to get content from a folder on vcfed.org rather than from the Pi on our local network. I fixed that. Every few months someone from the Infoage board hosts a meeting for the various group leaders. There was one such meeting tonight. One of the highlights: Infoage got a grant to install ADA-compliant ramps for all the public buildings on campus. That includes our museum building ("9010-A" in Infoage parlance from the Army days). I think it will be installed in the next few months. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

IBM 3740 FM Disks and Catweasel
by william degnan 12 Aug '17

12 Aug '17

Anyone who cares... Using my XOR S-4 S-100 computer I built IBM 3740 disks (SDSS) tonight. I had to replace a cap near the 7812 and one of the 1488 drivers on the CPU I/O card first, to get the system to work, but after that I was all set. 128 bytes 26 sectors per track, ~241K capacity. There were a lot of disk formats back then, I had to double check I was building the right thing as the old systems are flexible yet cryptic. So, should I attempt to build or image disks using the catweasel MK4 as the drive controller I have an actual disk to play with, or image disk. The XOR S-4 system I am using has Mitubishi M2896-63-02U drives, they're 8" DS/DD and the disk controller uses a 1795 FDC chip. The computer with the Catweasel has a Tandon 848. I'll post more details on my site as I make progress with photos. Bill

Degnan: I am picking up a MAC SE model 5011 with a bad SCSi HD (I am told) on the way to the workshop Saturday to play around with. Not sure if anyone is into these I think the hard drive is bad... ------------------------------------ It bugs me sometimes, that many of my VCFians don't realize I've been fixing and selling classic Macs and parts for about 20 years. http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/mac.html Old hard-drives fail for the factual reasons cited. Smacking hard drives to release them from what most call "stiction", works in various ways, depending on the actual physical fault, which isn't always "stiction". On compact Macs, there's bad connections which a smack on the case will verify and sometimes "fix". Just as in an earlier post, I suggested removing IC chips from sockets, fixes (or causes) bad connections. As for stickers on Macs. I don't engage in voodoo discussions, but sometimes voodoo methods have a basis in fact. A properly placed smack! is an exercise in physics; a properly placed decal is an exercise in art, or voodoo. Bill Degnan is an old friend of mine, but sometimes I think he "smacks" the VCFed NJ list, just to see if it "fixes" the discussion, or just to watch the sparks fly. Three times is the charm, Bill. S100 hybrid IMSAI/MITs on Ebay
by Herb Johnson 11 Aug '17

11 Aug '17

Bill Degnan says: [link to IMSAI on eBay] Assuming this was assembled in the late 70's early 80's from parts of "older" machines. I am sure Herb would agree there were a lot more of these kinds of S-100 machines used. Most early "stock" S-100 systems were modified and did not survive into the 80's in their original stock configuration. I bet the person who buys this will take the parts and use them to "complete" other machines to return those to stock condition, destroying the historical evidence that most computers of the 70's were hacked. or paint the grey TAI chassis to make it blue. I do understand about the financial value incentive to buy/sell stock items, but historically there is a price to pay, lost knowledge. ------------------------------------- Bill evoked my name, so I'll respond, but try not to take all the "bait". By the way, the system in question was re-offered as a mixed system, it has pieces of IMSAI, TEI and other brands of boards in it. That's more informative, if not honest, of the seller to do. To Bill's point. It's a simple fact of history, that most owners of early S-100 systems (before they were sold as complete turn-key disk-based systems), bought them in pieces, modified them like crazy, mixed board-brands like crazy, made their own boards. This was done for good reasons, at the time. and...it's still done today. In the era, it was not "hacking", it was normal and necessary. It was critical to, and demonstrated, the growth of the industry. That is the history. So notions of "stock IMSAI 8080" or "stock MITS Altair" are mostly ...(hitting delete key repeatedly)....not consistent with actual history of use. Some are, and that's fine too, IMSAI and MITS sold stock complete systems (with branded disk drives and controllers, etc.) I have some brand-systems myself (Ithaca Intersystems comes to mind). It's pointless for me to tell other people what to do today with things they own or buy. Or to argue the merits of a stock system versus non-stock. It is not pointless, for me (or Bill Degnan) to represent and inform, about actual history of use, of a brand or of one system. The lost knowledge that Bill speaks of, is knowledge of the diversity of IMSAI/Altair compatible boards, and the history of S-100 companies, and the stories of individuals through the S-100 computers they put together, for purpose. It's a rich history, as I suggested. Some of the S-100 systems or boards on my Web site, have a history to them which I've described. Bill does the same on his site. s100computers.com has many histories of S-100 companies as part of the design history of the boards shown on-site. There's many other sites which discuss "history". Those individual efforts matter. It's not done much in books; there's some vintage-magazines with articles. Most of the published "histories", the professional historians, if they bother focus on a handful of computer brands and only a few early, specific systems. Antique professionals hardly care at all about old computers. There's exceptions of course. Thus, the burden of preserving this history, falls MOSTLY on individual "hobbyists", and a handful of institutions (some small, some not) who care to do the same. The downside, is the indifference and lack of respect, for amateurs, from professionals. Hardly a new phenomena. I really don't want to argue about this. People, institutions, publishers, professionals - all make their choices to suit their interests and resources. And so do I. I'm responsible for my efforts, not someone else's. My work speaks for itself. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey in the USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

Tarbell DD controller troubleshooting
by Herb Johnson 11 Aug '17

11 Aug '17

Rich Cini: ...Tarbell DD controller for a machine I’m restoring and it doesn’t respond to any manual communications with the board using the test routines in the manual. ...Since it’s jumper-selectable for port ranges, I’ve tried both ranges. [Says he may replace the 8208 bus transcievers - what's a substitute?] ..A second Tarbell DD controller which won’t allow the CPU to come out of reset. -------------------- Pardon me for brief do-this suggestions, to save reading time and for clarity. And hello to my good friend and S-100 colleague Rich Cini. On the "can't address" board. Use an oscilloscope to look at the chip-enable signals for the floppy controller chip and data latches. See if the chips are being addressed when you send the IO read or write. Then trace backward to the I/O decoding and the bus pins. Or, start from the bus and trace "forward", your choice. Find the fault. There's many kinds of faults which can occur on any 1970's S-100 board. A common one is corroded IC pins and sockets. "Corrosion" comes in many flavors, as has been discussed in the S-100 community. "Replacing the chips" may simply clean the bad connection or remove the corroded chip; for awhile. Look for Ithaca Intersystems on my Web site for details. On the "stuck at reset" board. I don't know what that means. For this you may need a "divide and conquer" strategy. Presuming your board has socketed chips, remove the chips that access the S-100 bus, one by one; until the board no longer "sticks" the bus. When that happens, look at the schematic to see what function that last removed chip performed. Then add chips back in reverse order, to confirm the "stuck". By definition you MIGHT start with any chips on the bus reset lines. But "stuck at reset" is a vague symptom - your alternative strategy is to look (o-scope) at the reset lines on the bus, see if they are actually asserted and trace back on the Tarbell board to see what's asserting them. If those lines are OK at the bus, then you can try to determine the exact problem by bus signals. Maybe the data lines are jammed up, maybe it's the status or control lines, or address lines. Rich, I have a general argument for use of diagnostic methods - like the ones I've mentioned - over asking around for someone's list of known failures. (shrug) but you wanted some directions and not a lecture. My Web site has lots of examples of how I diagnose S-100 problems. Do the same things happen on one brand and model of S-100 board? Yeah, if the design is the problem, or if part-producers had a problem (poor sockets, chips that rust up). Otherwise, I think an oscilloscope and a schematic, and a working S-100 system, are your best friends. They will get you in the ballpark on some board. Then you can ask for specific help, or figure out the problem. Herb Johnson retrotechnology.com -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey in the USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

Updates -- TV/monitor stuff
by Evan Koblentz 11 Aug '17

11 Aug '17

Update for Jeff/Corey: I talked to Adam and Dean, both of whom helped determine which monitors/TVs to keep and which to sell/recycle. We decided to move the 27" Sony TV from the sell/recycle pile back into the keep pile. It's a good TV for certain artifacts-of-the-month, it's good for some VCF East exhibitors, good for Festivus, and so on. Update for everyone: decided on my own to remove Bernie S.'s former prison TV from the sell/recycle pile. I talked to him and we made came up with a plan: he's going to autograph it for us, and then he supports us eBay-ing it or selling it at the next VCF East. After all it's a federal prison TV used by a famous hacker! Too important to let go for ten bucks. But we still don't need it, so we'll get real value from it. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] the binary programmer cartoon

re: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/209/503496984_bc43812ff6_o.jpg It's a Far Side style cartoon "real programmers code in binary" showing a fellow at a CRT displaying only ones and zeroes. The kybd has 3 keys: 0 1 enter I'm not amused, nor is anyone who uses front panels, whether toggle switched or pushbuttons. At least we "enter the program" in binary. Even Evan's doing that now! Some systems have pushbuttons that encourage "chording" in octal: the kembak, Univac, HP, etc. There's a reason all computers up to the 70s had huge front panels. The binary status REALLY MATTERED. -- Jeff Jonas

S100 hybrid IMSAI/MITs on Ebay
by william degnan 09 Aug '17

09 Aug '17

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Vintage-IMSAI-8080-Computer-Microcomputer-/192… Assuming this was assembled in the late 70's early 80's from parts of "older" machines. Bill

One of its drives has Linux installed on it, the other drive has VMS. Yes, VMS. It boots up with a small stub program that loads Alpha virtualization (emulation) and then, boots the VMS image. Everything is as if it was running on a *real* Alpha. I can write Alpha assembler and debug it (Symbolic debugger or DELTA or XDELTA) just like on a real Alpha. I've used this for on-the-road development as well as for presentations because it is difficult to lug an Alpha system about (no Tadpole Laptop, albeit, I would like to find one). The only drawback is that the product is licensed via a small USB-dongle depriving me of one USB port of the laptop. Alpha virtualization: http://www.vax-alpha-emulation.com/p/emulation/alpha/

assembler is tedious (was WooHoo!) (Jeffrey Jonas)
by Herb Johnson 08 Aug '17

08 Aug '17

There's some irony in discussing the tedium of assembly language programming, by using (excuse me) the tedium of emails as a learning and describing tool. It's my bias, but the hardest way to learn something, is by having several people explain it, post streams of details, argue amongst each other in the process, get sidetracked, etc. I understand, that's the 21st century way; no insult, it's just not my 20th century way (or my textbook way, I was formally educated in computing). Look. The vintage basis for assembly-language programming, included the limited resources available to microprocessor owners in the 1970's. Hand-assembly and front panels, limited memory, limited I/O, limited storage. Limited access to prior source-code. The other limitation was the owner him/herself: programming was likely a mystery, at least programming that particular processor, and later in time the mystery of whatever "system" architecture in use. Results matter. Those owners learned, became computing experts, who became employed in the personal-computer boom to come. So - that old-school way, mattered then; and matters now as a matter of historic preservation. So why preserve it? To remember the lessons of the 20th century past: a past of limited resources, versus the 21st century experiences of ABUNDANT, STANDARDIZED computing. And so, calling assembly language programming "tedious" misses these points, imposes those 21st century assumptions on 20th century tech. This is not some old man's problem with the future. My vintage Web site, attracts people who ask me "I wanna start with some vintage computing; where do I learn, how to program and repair these things?" I'm stumped - modern resources have mostly given up "assembly language" and "TTL logic" or even "read this schematic"! If the above is too "tedious", if you are messing with vintage computers "for fun", and don't care about historic perspective, that's fine. But you have a choice. Try to sledge-hammer C code (or some language-of-the-year) from a cross-compiler into an Apple II, and trip over all the I/O it needs to "know"? Or, work within the Apple II's BASIC, Sweet-16, and assembly-language calls (documented long ago) - in assembler (readily accessible) - and get something DONE? And learn something "old"? If you are worried about looking trivial - buy a Raspberry Pi and *guarantee* your results are trivial, just in a larger social group. Harumph, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Tarbell DD controller troubleshooting
by Richard Cini 08 Aug '17

08 Aug '17

All – Not sure if anyone has worked on these boards before, but I’m working on a Tarbell DD controller for a machine I’m restoring and it doesn’t respond to any manual communications with the board using the test routines in the manual. The simplest test is to write a value to the data port and read it back using a ROM monitor. I always get 0xFF back. Since it’s jumper-selectable for port ranges, I’ve tried both ranges. I didn’t know if this was a common failure mode, but I thought I’d first replace the buss interface chips – 8208 octal 3-state transceivers. Not sure if there is a known cross reference or replacement. If so, what is it? I also have a second Tarbell DD controller (a spare) which won’t allow the CPU to come out of reset. Not sure if that sounds familiar to anyone, but I thought I’d mention it in case it sounds familiar. Thanks! Rich -- Rich Cini http://www.classiccmp.org/cini http://www.classiccmp.org/altair32

The great CRT & printer disbursement
by Evan Koblentz 07 Aug '17

07 Aug '17

Today we set aside about 1/3rd of all our monitors and printers. We simply had too much. We focused on keeping computer-branded versions and historically significant aftermarket versions. We put aside mostly generic items and redundant branded items (we don't need six Apple Imagewriter IIs, for example.) The units that we put aside -- a whole pallet full of printers and maybe 15-20 monitors -- will all be available to members at the workshop next weekend. Items are yours for $10 each. All items are as-is and untested. Some are quite nice, we just have enough or don't need them.

Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 07 Aug '17

Awesome day at the museum. There were a moderate amount of visitors. The big news is how much we accomplished in the warehouse. Me, Jeff B., Adam, Dean, and Drew all helped out. Jason Scott + girlfriend stopped by to donate a large amount of periodicals and shelving. By the end of the night, we all consolidated several shelving units and pallets into about 1/3rd less area. We worked on both the sorted and unsorted sides of the warehouse. We also put aside many monitors and printers which are not needed. See my next email...

Who can scan old pictures quickly?
by Evan Koblentz 06 Aug '17

06 Aug '17

Everyone, I was sent a few dozen photographs -- real ones, not computer files -- of some of the original VCF events from the late 1990s. It would take me a long time to scan these using a conventional consumer-grade multifunction device. Who can scan them and get them back to us quickly? Not looking for anyone to post these: I'll handle that directly on the VCFed site. Just need digitization.

August 2017 Workshoppe Importante Info-mation
by Jeffrey Brace 05 Aug '17

05 Aug '17

We are going to have the workshop in 9032-A which is the bigger room near the main building, since we have people working on a decent amount of stuff. As a reminder the workshop is $10 per person, *per* day now. Sorry this InfoAge's rule and not our decision. If you have signed up, then you are guaranteed a table, otherwise you will always be downwind from Evan as he farts silently and deadly from eating too many pretzels. DATE: August 12 & 13, 2017 LOCATION: InfoAge Building 9032A - (2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township, NJ) TIME: Start about 10 A.M. on Saturday and ends whenever we go to sleep. End about 5 P.M. on Sunday. (Starts around 10 A.M. Sunday morning) SIGNUP: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16G0w7Z5y15B2uWh-NKIt mVnoJF-f3NIIFQDoEnUHx5A/edit?usp=sharing COST: - $10 per person, PER day. This is required by InfoAge for us to pay them. - $25 for those wanting to stay overnight. Please pay me when you get there so that I don't forget. Otherwise I will send my attack cat to find you. OVERNIGHT: Bring your own pillow, blankets, soap etc. We provide a bed frame and an uncovered mattress. There are showers and a kitchen for your use. - We will have PayPal credit card swipes available. Let me know ahead of time if you want to use this and I will set it up. EQUIPMENT: - VCF will provide a table and you can use any available electrical outlet. - Bring your own tools, power strips, power cords, and supplies etc. - Please bring an extra one or two power cords as these are often forgotten by people. DRINKS: You should bring your own. I would recommend bringing a cooler of some type. FOOD: You provide your own. We usually order pizza, subs or go out to a dinner and everyone pays their own way. Usually, we make a decision when everyone gets hungry. GATE: During the hours from 1 pm to 5 pm close the front gate behind you. We want museum visitors to go to the front lobby and not wander through the middle of the campus. Outside of those times, you can feel free to leave the gate open. PARKING: Park across from 9032 or 9010A on any blacktop area. InfoAge doesn't like us parking on the lawn anymore. QUESTIONS? Please ask me (Jeff Brace) or Evan. My cell is 732-759-1783 and Evan’s is 646-546-9999 in case you need to contact us. See everyone there! And have fun! -- ======================================================== Jeff Brace ========================================================
