A Big Round of Applause
by SVCatITC＠aol.com 03 Apr '17

03 Apr '17

Let's all give a big round of applause to Jeff B. and Evan for a great job in organizing & producing this year's festival. A great time was had by all. If it wasn't for being completely inside, we would have all been swamped from the weather, so a big thanks also goes out to InfoAge for hosting with the facilities. Kudos also go out to all the exhibitors who set up such great and informative displays. We all had fun and learned a great deal. Thanks guys. Bill Inderrieden

Id like the Dataphone modem. Readers digest version is I grew up watching the dataphone infrastructure be dismantled. My (rip) uncle's house was literally lined with woodgrain panels from the front doors of the equipment cabinets, with the dataphone logo on every one lol. I gotta get a pic one of these days we still have the house. >> 2. An AT&T Dataphone II 2224B modem, with power supply. This was >> hot-shit in it's day. It would do 2400 bits/second.

Intro
by Michael Kato 30 Mar '17

30 Mar '17

My name is Maki and I've been on the list for a little while now, I've also had the chance to meet a number of members two weekends ago at TCF. Since I'm going to be at VCF-E on Friday and Sunday I thought I'd write a bit about myself so that maybe I can connect with those sharing similar interests. I grew up in Japan in the 80's; got my amateur radio license and then almost immediately got caught in the "paso-kon"(personal computer) excitement. Read lots of magazines and spent countless hours typing in hex code to run a game or to try a new programming language. My favorite was the Sharp MZ-80 machines with Z-80s. At school we had access to Hitachi Basic Master Level 3 machines with 6809 still with cassette tapes. I also had access to SORD M-100 and M-23 machines where I learned Z80, I also had a hand me down CP/M crate with 8" floppies.(Probably S-100, but don't know the make or model for that matter I don't even know who gave me the box - probably my dad's colleague) Eventually I went off to boarding school in Singapore, and took with me a Epson Geneva PX-8(z80 cp/m laptop). I have again my dad to thank for this nice gift. I did a little programming on that and remember writing a compiler that would take tiny pascal looking code and output z80 assembly.(in Lisp-80) >From college I remember TOPS-20 and Motorola 68HC11 intro to digital class. I also remember spending lots of time on a Mac IIci with Pascal and C, oh and of course Sun-2 and then Sparc. After graduating I entered the workforce as a programmer, worked for a number of companies including a trip back to Singapore to work for IBM Global Services.(I learned a bit of mainframe and a bit of AS/400 and did quite a bit of C++ on AIX and OS/2) Since returning to the states I've been almost exclusively in the Web space.(and of course the Arduino and Raspberry pi stuff for fun) During the 80's 90's and into the 00's I collected unix workstations mostly around the MIPS architecture, and enjoyed getting NetBSD to boot on each. Recently I've decided to focus on a few things I really want to spend my time on. I've kept my Z80s(~10 machines including a Sharp MZ-700 and Nascom-2) Motorola 88k (NCD X-terminals, VME machines, DG AViiONs and Omron 88k) and some Sharp PC-1500 calculators with 8bit LH5801. I feel like there are still more creating to be done on all the older platforms, but in particular I'm thinking along the lines of z80 as target for embedded application like motor control for a drawbot. I have done some Forth but feel like I haven't experienced enough of that so thinking about Forth on Z80 and 88k to programming these projects. On the NCD 88ks I'm thinking maybe someday of bringing up an Oberon system. Being a web guy I fancy building a collaborative disassembler where people can annotate and share annotations for reverse engineered binaries. That's sort of where my mind's at; looking forward to meeting more z80 fans and 88k fans. And looking forward to seeing cool old hardware. ....maki.... PS. I also kept my sparetime gizmo 6120 - looking forward to learning more about pdp8

FS: Nixie Stuff
by Systems Glitch 30 Mar '17

30 Mar '17

I know there are a few Nixie folks on this list, so I figured I'd email out these. Currently listed on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/272611605567 <- 0-9 with driver board, tube tested http://www.ebay.com/itm/272611605890 <- +/- with driver board, tube tested, dark glass http://www.ebay.com/itm/272611606124 <- +/- with driver board, tube tested I've tested the tubes with a homebrew Nixie supply, I don't have pinouts for the boards and haven't attempted to test them. They have some pretty early 7400 series TTL on them, including some in blue plastic DIPs from Sprague (?!). Happy to bring them to VCF East this weekend and save on shipping. As always, Buy it Now/Best Offer. Thanks, Jonathan

Hi All; I felt the need to comment concerning the setup for VCF East. To all below who participated with me in the tables and chairs setup, MANY THANK YOU's. If it wasn't for Tony and his crew helping, we would not be as far along as we were yesterday in progress. I felt privileged and honored to be able to help with the effort. This was a large preparation undertaking. From my viewpoint, limited as it might be, it seems that it is always Evan and Jeff B. doing all the grunt work to get a large presentation such as this off the ground and ready for public viewing. I was able to divert from my job and help yesterday so I stepped up. Being an all volunteer organization, I understand that people have jobs and other commitments during the week. We however all benefit from the 'grunt' preparation that is needed for a large festival such as this, AND as a all volunteer function, it is the members that have to help for the group as a whole. Once we all finish enjoying the fruits of the "boys' labor", then will come the cleanup. I am personally asking everyone, ANYONE willing to step up and help with the pack up after Sunday. If a few more people stepped in to help, pack up goes a hell of a lot quicker. I will not be able to help in the pack up, but then again, I did my part. >From personal experience yesterday, here's a preview of what needs to be done. In 9032 meeting room, where most of the displays are: 1. All rented tables need to be collapsed and piled up ready for pickup by the rental co. 2. All wooden chairs need to be folded and stacked. 3. NJARC's Altec speakers, and podium need to be rolled back out and setup. 4. Info Age tables in storage need to be set back up. 5. Blue cubical dividers with 'Evan's Area' posters need to be set back up in the Hotel dining area. In the Hotel: 1. Consignment area tables need to be brought back to the large meeting area next door. 2. Chairs need to be folded up and returned to their respective areas. 3. Tables in main meeting room need to be folded up and returned. In the women's dorm in the volunteer lodging (key note speaker assembly): 1. The 100+ black folding chairs need to be folded up and returned. to 9032 and the Hotel. 2. Bunk beds need to be returned to the floor and mattresses returned to them. 3. Staging needs to be collapsed and returned to 9032. The main portion of this was setup with 5 guys in 6 hours (1 hour lunch). I wished I could have stayed longer to help, but had to leave. Now that you get a glimpse of the pack up task at hand, PLEASE can anyone help to put Info Age back in place for the next group function. Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 30 Mar '17

30 Mar '17

Got to the museum around 4pm today. Tony was there doing more work on the center door (he and his employees removed it and put a wall there per our request; now you can't tell it was ever a door). They're going to finish tomorrow. Bill Dudley came over to help me with the tablet project and also to help with show signs. Around 7ish I went to Jeff B.'s house to pick up some things we had shipped there. Then I worked in the museum until 3am. Train guys helped me with a few minor glitches. Tomorrow the tables are being delivered between 8-9am. Me, Jeff B., Bill I., and Tony's son + friend are going to set them up. Also setting up the chairs. A few tables/chairs need to be done Thursday so they don't interfere with IA being open tomorrow. Also tomorrow: we'll finish setting up the * last * tablet, clean the museum, make some internal signs for the exhibit halls, do some odds/ends needed for the show, make an appearance at the IA weekly staff meeting, and -- if we work hard and things go to plan -- then we may actually get to relax some on Thursday before a few early-birds start showing up. Yesterday I went to sleep at 5am and woke up at 12pm. Going to sleep now (3:30am) and waking up at 7am. If any of you ever hear outsiders comment that producing a show is no big deal... smack them for me. :) ------------------------- Evan Koblentz, director Vintage Computer Federation A 501(c)3 educational non-profit Evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation

WTB/WTT: Anyone Have a Green DEC Card Handle?
by Systems Glitch 29 Mar '17

29 Mar '17

I'm looking for a green DEC card handle, one of the plastic riveted-on type. I've got a grant continuity card that has no handle. It's an XYLogics, not a DEC, so it doesn't need to have a number on it. I will of course take an entire scrap card if you have no means of removing the handle. Bonus points if there's actually a green handle that says G727 on it :) Prefer to pick up at VCF East, of course. Thanks, Jonathan

Tables were delivered at 8:30 this morning. Jeff B., Bill I., Tony's son Mike, and Mike's friend Vince all showed up to assist with schlepping. We cleared the bunk beds from one barracks room for the keynotes, moved 100 chairs to that room, set up those chairs, set up tables in the consignment room, and set up tables in one exhibit hall. Everyone had to leave by 4-ish, but then Tony came over. We set up the tables in the other exhibit hall. Tonight I have the IA weekly staff meeting at 6:30 and the Off the Hook interview at 8-ish. Then I'll clean the museum, it's a mess now!

Stuff I'm looking for at VCF
by Jeff 29 Mar '17

29 Mar '17

Hey all - Jeff here (aka Bags). Not looking for a lot, but figured I'd throw this out there incase anyone happens to have stuff in their stash and could bring it along. I'll only be at VCF on Friday, but can make arrangements if anyone has any of this. Best bet is to email me directly at jeffg(a)junknet.net if you have any of this: #1 TI Silentwriter 700 Power Brick/Adapter (actually the one I have is a Silent 700/Travelmate 1200, 20vac). Looks like a typical smaller black wall-rat with rounded corners, and a 3 pin molex plug. I think the part # is 2310442-0001. I could use a couple other parts if someone has a busted one. #2 Commodore PET 8032 Keyboard (I'd take a busted parts unit with the number pad intact). The one I'm looking for is the one that has only 3 columns of buttons on the numeric keypad. #3 Really really reaching out there, but I have an At&t Touchtel Terminal (aka At&t Personal Terminal 510) that I'd love to find a keyboard (and keyboard garage) for. It should be branded At&t, have a flat plug simliar to the one used on the IBM Model M keyboards (keyboard side), and be fairly narrow, almost laptop sized. This shows the terminal and what the keyboard would look like: http://terminals-wiki.org/wiki/index.php/AT&T_Personal_Terminal_510. Also if anyone knows anything about it and any info that I could use to adapt a normal keyboard, I'd love to know. This particular unit is near and dear to me! I think thats about it - stuff I'm bringing to sell include a 19" SVGA monitor (CRT), 2x HP ColorPro Plotters, some NextStation part no:1477 power supplies (pizza boxes), and possibly a Zenith Lunch box computer that needs some love. Open to trades! Jeff aka Bags

Stuff I'm bringing for consignment sale at VCF East, and call for requests.
by jsalzman＠gmail.com 29 Mar '17

29 Mar '17

Going through my collection, picking out stuff I don't need anymore to be sold at the consignment table. I'm going to load up my 20 cu.ft. trunk with as much as I can. One thing I will be bringing is a working TI-99 PEB with RS-232 card, 32KB RAM, Disk Drive and controller. If you are looking for anything in particular, let me know. If I have the item(s) and I want to sell them, I'll make those items a priority. Also, any interest in a TRS-80 Model III that needs TLC? It powers up, the keyboard contacts may need cleaned, and a connector for one of the internal ribbon cables should be fixed/soldered. Just to note, I won't be selling any requested items "out of my trunk." Any requested items I bring will be placed in the consignment room. Thanks, Jeff Salzman

A little promotion...[KERMIT]
by Herb Johnson 28 Mar '17

28 Mar '17

An interesting fact about KERMIT the communications protocol, is that it is owned and was actively supported by Columbia University, for over 30 years. They still assert ownership, but don't provide active support today. There's few early microcomputer products or services that have had such long interest by the originators; fewer still with CURRENT interest from the owners. http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/ Columbia U's site had KERMITs for many many kinds of microcomputers and minicomputers and more. So their interest wasn't casual, they provided real resources, and also charged for some services. They apparently still sell some kind of use license. I'd be curious to hear about this at VCF-East, but that's up to Doug, he may be more interested in the technical side of KERMIT and the superbrain of course. herb -- Herbert R. So my ride share sitch was forwarded on the mailing list like a month ago and, not at all to my surprise, nothing ever really came of it. But since I've been pretty active on the list today I figure it's worth another shot. I'm coming in on the NJT from New York eaaaaarly Friday morning, and it's about a two mile hike up to the center from there. The walk's not godawful, but it is about an hour out of my morning. So if anyone with a vehicle wants to make a friend, I would be very grateful for a pickup. Anyhow, carry on and thanks either way!

Call for Extra Irons for VCF East
by Systems Glitch 28 Mar '17

28 Mar '17

All, I was going to borrow a number of Hexacon soldering stations from a former employer for VCF East, but apparently the guy who was supposed to be servicing and repairing their spares has not finished. I have three irons of my own that I'll be bringing, but I'm not sure how many people will be active in the workshop area at a given time. I'd appreciate if a few people could bring spare irons that they don't mind random people using. Stands and cleaning sponges would be good, too. Thanks, Jonathan

Sunday Appliance Computer Panelists
by william degnan 28 Mar '17

28 Mar '17

Attention Sunday's panelists, here is some prep info for you. 1. Each of the three groups (Tandy, Apple, Commodore) will have one microphone (hopefully) that they can pass amongst the team. You can rotate who the person will be to respond to questions, does not matter to me. 2. Questions will be pretty specific game show style and hopefully closed-ended. Please keep your answers specific to the question, on-topic and paragraph length so we can get through the entire set. 3. Generally speaking the discussion will cover (*not necessarily in this order*): a. Why is 1977 an important year? b. The common characteristics of home/small business appliance computers in 1977. b.2 "Appliance computer or not"? Covers other lesser-known appliance computers available in 1977, "almost appliance" computers, etc. c Questions related to "..why today are the Apple II, Commodore Pet and Tandy TRS 80 Model 1 models are synonymous with the term appliance computer?.." d. The appliance computer in the home of 1977, typical user and what was "new" about the appliance computer owner, what drove this new market? e. Describe the appliance computer in small business in 1977, what kinds of things did the appliance computer and related peripherals begin to make obsolete? f. Compare and contrast Apple, Commodore, Tandy products. Technical, user experience, software, reliability, pet peeves, etc. g. Putting appliance computers in perspective as they relate to the overall computer industry in 1977 4. The last time I ran a panel at VCF some of the speakers took it as an opportunity to go waaay off topic "before I answer your question let me first tell you about what great new project I am working on today..." - please do not do that, ok? Feel free to contact me with questions. Bill

Repairs to a Heath WH19 Terminal
by Jason Perkins 27 Mar '17

27 Mar '17

Looking for some advice on getting a Heath WH19 terminal going again. First, some schematics: http://www.rsp-italy.it/Electronics/Kits/_contents/Heathkit/Kits/Heathkit%2… My annotations on the x-ray view: https://goo.gl/photos/PF8N7wRDPLc1czUU7 What I observed: When first powering the terminal it did nothing. The fast blow 1A fuse was open, the wire was broken. As it was handled it broke more, suggesting it could have simply failed from vibration? The manual said that a 2A slow blow fuse is appropriate for 120v operation. I replaced the fuse with the smallest one I had on hand, a 4A slow blow, connected the terminal to a current meter, and powered it up. It beeped :) But was drawing 5A :( and then there was a little smoke :( :( I quickly powered it off. R263, a 1.2 ohm 2W resistor had cracked. R263 supplies the +53v rail to the horizontal section. C228 seems to be good (open resistance, correct mfd), D208 and D211 seem to be good (.5v one way, open the other), C229 isn't shorted but my meter can't measure its capacitance. I replaced R263 with a 4w 1.2 ohm resistor I had on hand, and powered up again. Still too much current draw, and more smoke in the area of Q217. Does this suggest Q217, the HOT, is bad? I pulled it out and did the diode test on it, it seemed to test OK? It's a BU500, and I see some NOS ones on ebay. I'm unsure what my next step should be. Thanks for your input! -- Jason Perkins 313 355 0085

Last year at VCF-East, among other things, I bought a circa 2003, Mac G5 Tower. 26 Mar '17

I have stayed at the Residence Inn Marriott in Neptune on Jumping Brooke Rd. It has a pool, free hot breakfast, etc. For those looking for a nice hotel who also want to split the cost with a friend or two, I discovered that they have a two bedroom, two bathroom suite with one king and one queen bed and a fold-out sofa bed. Nice option for multiple people to also have some privacy. The rate for three nights (Thursday through Sunday) is $657, which split three ways is a pretty good deal. Hope this helps.

FS: iMacs
by Systems Glitch 26 Mar '17

26 Mar '17

All, I've got a few iMacs I'd like to part with at VCF East: 1x indigo G3 slotloader -- with keyboard and mouse 1x lime G3 tray loader -- with mouse, OS X 10.3 installed, works 1x Intel Core 2 Duo white, OS X 10.4 installed, has typical colored vertical lines issue $20 each. I won't bring them if no one claims them. I believe the indigo G3 also works, but I haven't powered it up in a while. The Intel iMac does have vertical lines issues, but it's not so bad as to be unusable. I can pull up system specs if anyone is interested enough to request them. Thanks, Jonathan

Free empty boxes for IBM 5150 PC + monitor
by matt＠mattmik.com 26 Mar '17

26 Mar '17

I know empty boxes aren't really worth anything, but if anyone's interested...I have the original boxes for both the IBM 5150 PC and 5151 monitor. They're free to a good home. They look like this: https://www.classiccomputershop.eu/Files/5/17000/17331/ProductPhotos/MaxCon… http://www.computercloset.org/IBM_PC_System_Boxed.jpg I believe the foam inserts are still inside. Let me know. I'll be at VCF East on Saturday.

If anyone has a spare SupRmod they want to sell me, I'd appreciate it.

I just went to work on my apple II for VCF east and I forgot that I have an external modulator for my Rev-4 not an internal SupeRmod. If anyone has a spare working SupeRmod and can part with it, I'd be pretty appreciative. Email me with how much you want for it. Thanks, Corey corey cohen uǝɥoɔ ʎǝɹoɔ

Monitor repair class test subjects
by Ian Primus 25 Mar '17

25 Mar '17

I'm getting my material ready for the monitor repair class I'm doing on Friday, and Jason I know is bringing a monitor with some faults as an example. Looking around, I seem to have fixed most of the broken things i had laying around that were obvious. I'll keep looking, but, has anyone got a monitor that has a fault that they think would make a good demonstration? I *think* Will had one he said he could bring that has messed up vertical, I can ask him to bring that along if he has it handy. But if anyone else has anything convenient, let me know. Preferably monitors that either are self contained terminals, or take composite video, to make getting some video on the screen simpler with limited amounts of hardware. Thanks! -Ian

VCF-E Consignment room volunteers
by Jim Scheef 25 Mar '17

25 Mar '17

Hello all, Hopefully some of you remember me as Kelly's helper in the consignment room over the last few years. Before that I was MARCH's first treasurer for VCF 3, 4, 5. This year I agreed to take over the consignment room so Kelly can concentrate on his team exhibit. If this is going to work, I need two or three volunteers to help in the consignment room. This ensures that no one is stuck making change the entire weekend. In exchange you will be reimbursed for your ticket for Saturday and Sunday. This is important work and the volunteers must be approved by Evan. This is actually a fun job, and, of course, you get first crack at all the consignment stuff. If you would like to help, please respond off-list. Jim

Looking for Tarbell DD controller
by Richard Cini 24 Mar '17

24 Mar '17

All – I still can’t get my Cromemco 16FDC to work properly with the hacked-together Gazelle I have – the individual parts seem to work but not the whole. By chance, does someone have a spare/extra Tarbell DD controller that they would part with? Or I’d even maybe I could send my 16FDC to someone with a working Cromemco system who can test it for me. It would also be helpful if I could get a picture of the floppy controller and CPU Support cards in the Gazelle that VCFMA has in-stock. I pinged Jim privately but I haven’t heard back. Please let me know off-list if you can help. Thanks! Rich -- Rich Cini http://www.classiccmp.org/cini http://www.classiccmp.org/altair32 All –
