He might be interested in my Yahoo! group : https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/UnivacComputers/info Duane From: Douglas Crawford via vcf-midatlantic Sent: Friday, December 23, 2016 10:02 AM To: vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org Cc: Douglas Crawford Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Has anyone checked out this place in Pottstown PA? Doug here, I'm the Pottstonian of the group so I'll do the dump. The owner, Bill Kemner, used to operate a store at the famous Gilbertsville Zern's farmers market. For decades he and his family bought up auctions and offered the items for sale in his store and at ham fests. He is a Navy veteran and work on shipboard UNIVAC computers. A number of years ago he moved out of Zerns into this warehouse. Bill has quite a bit of old electronic components, two isles, perhaps 30 feet long, full with small bins of misc parts. He also has LOT of tubes- a large closet full of them ("The tube room"). He has several rooms of old A/V media, equipment, and tube radios. Other stuff runs the gamut of typical yard sale household items to scientific gear, including at this time, an electron microscope... and an IBM System 30. And yes he has a lot of vintage microcomputer gear, including software, cables, accessories. Here's the sad part for us: Much of the pre- IBM PC computers he has were stored in outdoor semi trailers and much have sustained either fairly extreme temperature, moisture and in many cases outright water damage. That being said for some purposes the computers are useful. He tends to be "optimistic" about what things are worth, but you can always make offers. Last summer he brought out a lot of additional stored computer equipment. There is currently a lot of Apple II+s and IIe's out on pallets. The Apples and TRS-80s computers usually came from schools and have school brandings on them in some cases. There is a also room of that is a 90s computer store time capsule. A few of us locals have used trips to Kemners as a good reason to get together out here and that's been great. I'd love to have that happen with the further away folks sometime. Its entirely possible to burn half a day lost in there. If you need to bring the family on the loop, there are some not-too-far-away places of interest: Check out Saint Peter's Village and the Hopewell Furnace Rev war iron works. Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 22 Dec '16

22 Dec '16

I went to the museum today at 12:30 to give a tour to an out-of-town visitor who arranged it a while back. He's an EE who brought his son (home from college on winter break) who is studying to also be an EE. They spent a couple of hours with us. They brought us an EPROM burner for the workbench. I went to lunch at 3pm, came back, and the radio club guys flagged me down. They had a group of three visitors from California who wanted to see us. That group of people was also very knowledgeable and said they may have some S-100 donations for us. So, five visitors today, all extremely knowledgeable, EPROM burner for the museum, more possible donations later, and one good lunch. Glad to be there today. Oh and I had an InfoAge marketing committee meeting at 5pm which was fairly boring. :) I did learn that the sidewalk to our museum building is being converted to an ADA-compliant ramp (the law, not the language!) next spring. The IA board chairman promised me construction won't conflict with VCF East. I will stay on top of that just in case.

VCF East keynotes! Enigma, C++, 40 years of appliance computers
by Evan Koblentz 19 Dec '16

19 Dec '16

C++ inventor Bjarne Stroustrup, Ph.D., Enigma machine expert Tom Perera, Ph.D., and a panel discussion by computer historian Bill Degnan on the 40th anniversary of appliance computers featuring the Apple II, Commodore PET 2001, and TRS-80 Model 1 will be the keynote sessions for Vintage Computer Festival East XII, March 31-April 2, in Wall, New Jersey. The event is produced by Vintage Computer Federation (www.vcfed.org) a national user group devoted to enabling hobbyists and spreading awareness of computer history. The Federation is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Stroustrup (www.stroustrup.com) who developed the C++ programming language at Bell Labs starting in 1978, will discuss "The Origins and further Evolution of C++" on Saturday morning, April 1. He is currently a visiting professor of computer science at Columbia University and a managing director in the technology division at Morgan Stanley. His talk is sure to be an excellent follow-up to C language author and pioneer Brian Kernighan, who spoke at VCF East X in 2015. Perera's company, EnigmaMuseum.com, is in the business of hunting for, researching, restoring, and selling Enigma machines and related items. His talk, "Inside the Enigma: The history, technology and deciphering of an early laptop computer and the real story of the Imitation Game" will be presented Friday, March 31 after lunch. The World War II German Enigma was arguably an original form of laptop computer. This talk will explain the history and technology of the Enigma and link it to the movie "Imitation Game" which tells the story of the cracking of the German Navy Enigma code and the extraordinary contributions of mathematician Alan Turing to this endeavor. In order to keep the audience interested and involved, the movie has allowed some inaccuracies and omissions in the history and technology and in the masterful portrayal of the eccentric mathematician Alan Turing by Benedict Cumberbatch. This talk will trace the actual story of the Enigma and the cracking of the Enigma Code and attempt to fill in some of the Enigmatic aspects of Alan Turing's personality. Perera will also give a more technical demonstration of how the machines work and a real-time disassembly of an Enigma in a separate session that day. He will give further demonstrations and will offer for sale his Enigmas, Enigma simulators, other historic cipher machines, books, Enigma Library CD-ROM, and related items on Saturday and Sunday. Perera was formerly a professor of neuroscience at Columbia University, Barnard College, and Montclair State University. Degnan (www.vintagecomputer.net) is a co-founder of the Mid-Atlantic chapter of Vintage Computer Federation, a professional programmer and web developer, and formerly taught computer history at the University of Delaware. At his panel, "1977: The year of the appliance computer" you'll learn about the launch of the Apple II, Commodore PET 2001, and Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 1. Bill will guide the discussion to explore how the appliance computer facilitated the expansion of computers as an appliance into small businesses, schools, and the home. Panelists will be separated into three groups each representing the Apple, Commodore, and Tandy/Radio Shack perspective. The panel will respond to questions and share their knowledge and personal experiences. The discussion will continue from 1977 through the milestones of 1980s 8-bit appliance and home computing. All three sessions will be 90 minutes which includes audience Q&A. Further details will be shared as the event nears.

Museum Report - 18-Dec-2016
by Todd George 19 Dec '16

19 Dec '16

Really busy day at the museum. I honestly lost count/improperly tracked the number of people, but it was easily 20+. Most of them were there for the Model Train Exhibit. Quite a few had previously seen our exhibit in the prior location. Interest levels varied from low to high. I even walked someone through signing up for the local chapter mailing list. I filled in a few details about the club side of things and gave them a tour. :) There were quite a few other visitors, all of which I'd classify as "low to medium" levels of interest. One gentleman was there with his daughter (?) whom was a bit impatient, so I gave him a relatively quick tour. He was very interested, but she was not. I also took in a donation of some Tektronix gear. See ya! -Todd

SASI Hard Drive Controllers
by william degnan 17 Dec '16

17 Dec '16

Related to my post yesterday, I have a SASI XEBEC 104526 rev 4 that works ok when there is a fan blowing on it but overheats after a while. It controls a SASI external hard drive used by a Visual 1050 computer. OK, I will look through the electronics and replace failing components and sure it up. Seems like the typical course of action for an XEBEC and other (SASI) external controllers. I am also thinking about the CBM 9090 and related 5-10Mb drives. 35 years in, they all seem to be failed or failing. Similar XEBEC controllers for things like IBM PC's seem to have fared better. Why? Or just a coincidence? Is there a common component that fails more often in SASI controllers but not IDE and others of the era? I know the history of SASI/SCSI and I have some XEBEC docs. I can research further on my own, but maybe someone who actually supported these back when they were new has some casual knowledge to pass along. How reliable were these when they were new/current? Anyone have a hardcopy of "More Basic Computer Games"

If you have a hardcopy, can you please take a high resolution photograph with a camera or your phone and email it to me. I want to send the paper tape in with my kids to school on Monday morning. Corey, I can't help on the BASIC program, but you might be able to help me. The attached file is the output of a program I wrote last year to run on a 1219B computer and punch text into paper tape. I hand encoded the data from a character generator data sheet (TB62713). I don’t have a punch so I have not been able to check / debug the program. It runs on my emulator. If you have a way to send it to the punch, let me know of any problems. SASI Hard Drive Controllers

> I have a SASI XEBEC 104526 rev 4 that works > ok when there is a fan blowing on it but overheats after a while. > Is there a common component that > fails more often in SASI controllers but not IDE and others of the era? Short answer: I don't know, but here's how to diagnose heat-failing components: controlled heat and freeze. The trick is in finding the physical location. I simply don't know if there's a common component on XEBEC products which fails. I do know there are heat-related failures on decades-old computers; so I look for such things when I repair them. Obviously one can just replace "hot" components, but they may not be the source of the problem. Long-term, excessive heat is an enemy. Small hand-held IR thermometers are your friend. I bought one at Radio Shack decades ago for $50. Now they are $15; I'm still using my first one. If you freeze-spray a hot component and the board operates again, you've established cause-and-effect. A temperature-related failure mode can be a solder joint. Or a printed-circuit board through-hole which does not contain (enough) solder: the copper plating of the hole cracks over time and separates when hot or flexed. Components can crack too. I isolate heat-failing components, by putting the board in a freezer, then I install the board back in the device, after heating a SELECTED portion of the board with a hair dryer. Heating different parts of the board, and smaller sections, in succession, should isolate the failing location. "Teach a person to fish...." Herb -- Herbert R. Having repaired my keyboard (better this time) I am in the process of formatting the external hard drive. Takes a few hours I am on track 787 or 1223 so far, looking for positive vibes...think good thoughts until it completes the format. Then I don't care what you people think. ha ha. The XEBEC controllers are a bear. Bill

Teams?
by Joseph Oprysko 16 Dec '16

16 Dec '16

I'm a bit confused, and likely missed something. What are these "teams" I'm hearing about for VCF? Are we doing both individual exhibits as well as group/team exhibits? One of the things I know I'd like to see are "Awards" for various exhibits. While most if not all of us are exhibiting for fun/historical/educational reasons. It would kind of be nice to be recognized and acknowledged by the organization for the work we all put into our exhibits. I also believe that it could increase the quality of some of the exhibits, as well allowing for more focused exhibits. Also I feel that it could attract both more exhibitors, as well as more visitors to the festival, as competition is human nature. Joe -- Normal Person: Hey, it seems that you know a lot. Geek: To be honest, it's due to all the surfing I do. Normal Person: So you go surfing? Normal Person: But I don't think that has anything to do with knowing a lot... Geek: I think that's wrong on a fundamental level. Normal Person: Huh? Huh? What?

I could probably get away with taking it in, though getting it down into my basement might be interesting. BLS

Semi-OT: Cheap tablets for museum
by Jeffrey Jonas 14 Dec '16

Be sure the batteries can be replaced without destroying the case. A friend cracked the screen of his generic Android tablet while trying to replace the bad battery :-( Or always run them from USB power.

January 2017 and February 2017 Workshops
by Jeffrey Brace 14 Dec '16

14 Dec '16

I set the date for January 14 & 15 for the January workshop. For the February workshop it will be February 11 & 12. This time we will have it in 9032-A where we had it originally. The 9010-A common room that we used the last few workshops is too small. The workshops that we have had in there were cramped. We have so many people working on stuff, that we just don't have enough room in there. -- Jeff Brace - ark72axow(a)gmail.com

Update, museum tablets
by Evan Koblentz 12 Dec '16

12 Dec '16

Here's an update on the tablet project that I mentioned a while ago. We made simple card-stock signs for all of the microcomputer shortly before VCF East last spring. The signs looked decent and served their purpose. However, after a few months, the signs began to show their age and we realized it's a hassle to make changes. We also started to realize they looked sort of amateur-ish. So we decided to experiment with tablets. Simple tablets cost as little as $50-$60 and have tolerable specs for Android and our low requirements (run a browser, maybe play an A/V file here and there). I bought an Amazon Kindle Fire 7. It's a decent little tablet, but Amazon customizes it too much. You can't run Google Play apps without all kinds of complicated changes. I'm returning it tomorrow. In its place, I bought an Insignia (BestBuy house brand) 8" tablet. $60 and pure Android. I examined 20-something apps that do kiosk mode and/or parental control. Settled on an app called Fully Web Browser. It's inexpensive, easy to configure, and locks down everything except whatever domains/features that we white-list. Home button, hidden address bar, password-protected settings, even the power/volume buttons are locked down. It would be impossible for a museum visitor to do ANYTHING except what we specifically allow. The idea (as most of you know by now) is to install one tablet for every two display carts in our microcomputer exhibit. Each cart has upper/lower artifacts. The tablet screens will be divided into four quadrants. Visitors touch the quadrant corresponding with the artifact. I'm writing the web page so they can touch anywhere in the quadrant; it doesn't have to be on the actual contents (thanks to a trick in the <td> tag: <td onclick="location.href='yourpage.html'"> which supercedes using standard hyperlinks for the cell contents.) Up top there's a headline: "Press a box to learn more about the artifacts." On bottom are our Twitter/Facebook handles. Pressing a box makes that box go full-screen with info about the artifact. The top headline changes to, "Press here to return to the menu" and the bottom social media info stays the same. I ordered a case for the tablet. If it works well, then we'll determine a system for mounting them to the carts. And if THAT works well, then we'll bulk-purchase the rest of the tablets/cases. We already have funds budgeted for this. The simplicity of paper signs has some merits, but let's face it, this is 2016 and we need to have modern artifact presentation and interpretation. Using a slick kiosk app on tablets will be welcoming to our visitors, will make young people feel more comfortable in our learning environment, will impress InfoAge management, and (along with the two TVs we installed) will raise the bar for InfoAge museums in general. I am very excited about this project! We'll post some video when the first beta is installed.

update re: bouncing messages and also Verizon accounts on our list
by Evan Koblentz 12 Dec '16

12 Dec '16

Everyone, Got this email from our list provider just now. -------- Forwarded Message -------- Dear List Owners, Some of you will be aware that for the last week Verizon has been blocking email coming from our server in New York. As a result, customers of Verizon in the US who are subscribed to lists hosted on that server are not receiving list-emails. We are still working on getting this block lifted. As part of our routine maintenance updates on the weekend, stricter bounce rules were applied to all our servers around the world. Many lists have old and outdated email addresses that no longer work, or that mail cannot be delivered to. Any subscriber address on a list that now bounces more that twice in a month is automatically removed.

FS: Unknown S100 Host Interface Board
by Systems Glitch 11 Dec '16

11 Dec '16

link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/272480498465 Don't know what it does, it's only labeled as "S100 Host Interface," it *is* made in the USA though! There's a 50-pin dual row connector on top, but the board is all TTL logic. Electrical tested only -- it won't blow up your S-100 box, but it's not guaranteed to do anything else! Figured perhaps someone can find a use for it, or might even know what it's for! Thanks, Jonathan
