Festivus: Propane Grill Fix
by Jeffrey Brace 30 Nov '16

30 Nov '16

So I will be borrowing my mom's propane grill for Festivus. I cleaned the grill and the grease trap. I have a near empty tank and a full one. There is just one problem. Only one of the burners is working. My mom says that the second one tends to work after cooking for a while. Anyone have any experience in repairing these grills? -- Jeff Brace - ark72axow(a)gmail.com

Warehouse report
by Evan Koblentz 28 Nov '16

28 Nov '16

Dean, Drew, and I worked in the warehouse from 10am-6pm on Friday. An untrained eye would still see it as messy, but we got a lot done. Highlight: we moved the contents of several pallets onto shelving carts, which makes things easier to access/catalog and makes floor space. Lots more to do, but this was the first warehouse day since February so we are happy just to make progress. We have a plan for where to continue next time.

Floppy Days #67 - HP Series 80 Part III
by Randall Kindig 28 Nov '16

28 Nov '16

The HP Series 80 (HP83/85/86/87) This episode is the third and final in a series about the Hewlett Packard HP-85 computer, or more accurately, the entire line of similar computers known as the HP Series 80. Once again, I have the tremendously knowledgeable duo of Everett Kaser and Vassilis Prevelakis helping me impart information to you about that venerable line of historically significant desktop computers. In this episode, we will primarily be covering tech specs, peripherals, expansion, magazines and newletters, books, emulation, modern upgrades, connectivity to modern computers, buying one today, community and Web sites. Wow, now that I list this out, it’s obvious we have a lot to cover. In addition, I will briefly talk about my new vintage computer acquisitions, feedback and perhaps a little news. http://floppydays.libsyn.com/floppy-days-67-the-hp85b-computer-part-3-with-… <http://floppydays.libsyn.com/floppy-days-67-the-hp85b-computer-part-3-with-…> Randall Kindig host Floppy Days floppydays.com

FS: At Festivus
by Systems Glitch 28 Nov '16

28 Nov '16

All, I've got a few items I'd like to sell at Festivus. Contact me off-list with interest or for pictures. As follows: 1x IBM 5150 PC: This is the "absolutely first" PC from the Philly pick-up. Turns out it's a common 256K late production PC with the 60-some Watt power supply. Little bit of marker on the front. Has dual FH 5.25" floppies, IBM floppy adapter, 3rd party RAM expansion, and 3rd party MDA/parallel card. $100 OBO. Add XT-IDE rev 3 card with 64 MB DOM for $100. I'll write out a boot disk, and the XT-IDE utils if you like. No monitor/keyboard included. 1x Lawrence Livermore Labs MST-80B trainer *board only*. This is one that came to me without the suitcase. It was apparently a parts donor board, I repopulated it and got it working. Your choice of the "stock" LLL ROMs or the modified code that came with this lot of trainers. Not sure what the different ROMs do, I've dumped them so you can take a look if you'd like. Keypad operation appears identical to stock ROMs in my testing. $100 OBO. I can bring my bench supply for testing. 2x BAFCO Inc. Frequency Response Analzyers. I bought these at auction for the panaplex displays. One uses an IEC cable and I've powered it up, does stuff and appears to analyze the frequency response of a 50R coax jumper :) The other uses a 3-pin adding machine style cable, I haven't powered it up. One has asset management stickers from Comsat Labs. $50 each OBO, asking price is what I think the panaplex displays are worth. 1x HP 1415A Time Domain Reflectometer. Picked up at auction with other test gear. Does "stuff," makes a trace on screen that sort of matches what I'd expect for a time domain reflectometer. No further testing. It does include converters to go from those early high-frequency RF connections (not sure what they're called, I'm used to seeing them on ancient Gen-Rad stuff) to BNC. Make offer. 1x Gen-Rad 1217-B Pulse Generator. Mix of tubes and transistors IIRC, but still makes pulses like this: http://imgur.com/X1KwZ8e I haven't used it in a while, hence the selling. Wouldn't call it fully tested/calibrated, but it does work. $50 OBO. Might have more depending on what I have time to test this week. PM me if I'm supposed to be bringing something for you, just to make sure I've got it on my list! Thanks, Jonathan

As much as I truly do love to make and share my ribs with you, I must pick up some equipment that Saturday morning; thus, I will NOT have the time to spend making my ribs for those of you at Festivus. There is just so much happening at this time of year and there's too little time for it all to happen in. Perhaps, to make it up to you, I will whip up a couple of racks when VCF rolls around.

Looking for XXDP TAP image
by william degnan 27 Nov '16

27 Nov '16

If anyone knows of or would be willing to make me an XXDP TAP image compatible with a 16K PDP 11/40 that I can convert into a CONSOLE script? I'd take a RAM dump after loading XXDP on say a 11/35 11/40, probably also 11/34, 11/05, 11/10. If I could run TU58 emulator I would...it's not working correctly, I have tried everything I can think of. I will keep working on this and I also still can't boot my RL11 (RT11 on RL02). Given my circumstances the next thing I imagine to attempt is the download of XXDP "manually" via a CONSOLE as if it were dumped from TU58 tape just before initialization. I do have BASIC running in core at the moment, at least there's that. Given at least that works my theory about my inability to boot RL11 or TU58 could be that that I have a DMA-related UNIBUS issue. I have not supplied every detail of my system analysis here in this message but that's what I think is the "core" of the issue. har har. Open to suggestions thanks. Bill

(Mostly) 68k Macs at Festivus (FTAGH)
by David Riley 27 Nov '16

27 Nov '16

(Sorry if this is a duplicate; I wanted to make sure the MX change didn't break things) Hi all, As promised, I've catalogued my uncle's old machines that I'm bringing to Festivus. I've removed the ones that are already claimed, everything else is available. All have had batteries removed (some were stored in a garage with them in, as noted, with the usual disastrous effects). Except where noted, most of this is untested, so expect to have to perform some maintenance. Please let me know ahead of time what you'd like so I can pre-assign recipients. I'd like to see it all go at Festivus. 2x LC 475 1x Performa 400 (LCII) 2x LCIII 1x LCII 1x LCII with bad battery corrosion on LB, may be unrecoverable, but RAM, Ethernet card and case/parts seem fine 3x PowerBook AC adaptors 1x PowerBook Duo AC adaptor 1x PowerBook G4 AC adaptor 2x AAUI-10Base2 adaptors 1x PowerBook video adaptor 1x "puck" PowerBook AC adaptor, computer end broken (tip snapped off) In addition, I think there might be a PM7200 in there, and I have a PM7100/80 (very dirty, unknown condition) coming my way that I should be able to bring. Please mail me directly with enquiries. - Dave

Commodore stuff at Festivus
by Herb Johnson 18 Nov '16

18 Nov '16

http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/amiga.html These are Amiga, C-64, C-128, VIC-20 related service manuals, published by Commodore. I'll bring them to Festivus for some deal. Probably 25 pounds of manuals in a box. Most of these are probably online as PDF's, I'm told. I'd like something for these - ALL of these. Same deal, for a dozen books about C-128's or C-64's or related devices. Assembly language, programming, user's stuff. Another box. I'll also bring a VIC-20 and C2N cassette drive, both in the box. I have a loose C2N too. Again, looking to pass on there for a modest price. These are common., they are not "mint". Herb -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

EAI TR20 analog computer exhibit

Bill and all: I've taken the liberty to post a reply under a proper subject line that's relevant to the thread. Not "digest question blah blah" which is irrelevant and will be impractical to search back for in the future. I really encourage people who post, to use relevant subject lines, but this is up to the Moderator to enforce, (except when he doesn't). Bill, I worked with EIA analog computers long ago, and I'm an old electrical engineer. So it's good to see this EIA TR20 will be restored and demonstrated. But very few people in the VCFed list, have any experience with analog computing or with differential equations. Fewer visitors will know this stuff. The classic demo of these sorts of systems, is some kind of "bouncing ball" display. Everyone has seen a ball bounce, so it's familiar. There ought to be enough integrators to make a damped oscillator. Since you want a chart recorder output, the frequencies will be sub-audio. But you might allow for a speed-up at audio rates, so an oscilloscope and speaker can demonstrate operation, without requiring the chart recorder and using up paper and ink - all points of failure, weeks and months later. If it were my choice, I'd go "audio" so it's easier for the docents to demonstrate the unit and avoid problems with chart recorders. That's my considerations. Something simple, familiar, and convenient to demonstrate when you aren't there. The amazing thing will be that it works, and has been preserved. We can run real programs, another day. Hi Eugene; I am a Newbe also, and for what it is worth, I figured I would intro myself to you and the group. I am the one working on the EAI TR20 analog computer exhibit, since I worked at EAI from 1978-1985. I now become(?) the resident expert(?). We all know the definition of an expert: amateur away from home! I agree that sometimes it feels a little intimidating to know where to put / discuss stuff in the different forums. I figure this: put it out there, where you feel appropriate, and someone will pick it up and start the thread. I'll start one thread..... All you guys....... I need analog math problems to be submitted, so that when the TR20 is restored, we'll have simulations to run on the computer. I'll make a list of what computational modules we have so you know what to work with, i.e. integrators, DFG's, summers, etc. The plan is to have an XY recorder and XY scope for results output. If SE/30s found themselves in the midst of the rest of your collection, they'd probably develop an inferiority complex. BLS

New room for Festivus which is on Dec. 3 & 4 and here is the sign up list
by Jeffrey Brace 11 Nov '16

11 Nov '16

I will send out a more detailed e-mail later, but we have a new room for Festivus. It is in 9010 C/D which is on the other end of the building where the museum resides (9010-A). This new location is multiple rooms and will accommodate our larger Festivus group. It has a cafeteria with tables, refrigerators, microwave, coffee maker, ice maker, cable tv. I plan on putting Ian's games in the game room with my C64 Space Command room. All the rooms are nice, very comfy and roomy. I will be firming up the signup list in the next week or so. Here is the list in case you missed it: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1flOzpjh4Wdd3Gn6B3DqWHpQmxYSQGrtFo20… -- Jeff Brace - ark72axow(a)gmail.com

question on vcfed and lists
by W2HX 11 Nov '16

11 Nov '16

Hi all, pretty new to the VCF stuff. Question about the various means of communications available to us. So I see a lot of infoage/camp evans/club related discussion here. But not a lot of technical q&a. On the VCFED website, there are various forums. Is that the right/best place for technical discussion and this is more for club-related activities? Do I have this right? In case everything is welcome everywhere, I am looking for the following DEC PDP-8/e related items: M8650(YA) or preferably M8655 (async interface) M8357 RX02 interface card Thanks 73 Eugene W2HX

Welcoming new board members
by Evan Koblentz 11 Nov '16

11 Nov '16

VCFed (nationally) has two new board members: Bill Degnan, who you all know, and Michael Brutman, who's been very involved as a moderator on VC Forum and a leader in the IBM PCjr community. They join Corey, Jeff B., and Erik. Locally, we added Dean to the chapter leadership, joining Corey and Jeff. My role remains the same: chief cat-herder. :)

pickup: old Macs in Manhattan?
by Herb Johnson 10 Nov '16

10 Nov '16

Someone has contacted me, who has three-four nonworking SE/30 Macs and a few accessories; and an eMac, and possibly other such items. He lives in Manhattan. Probably available within the next 30 days or so. If anyone is in that area, contact me directly. I live in central NJ and I'd like part of this deal. I'm not driving there, however. Last chance: Amiga 1200, TRS80 Model II, Mac Quicksilver
by David Hoelzer 09 Nov '16

09 Nov '16

Just a last-chance-before-eBay on these…If you’re interested, please let me know ASAP. If it helps, I’m going to be driving from New York down to Washington, DC next Tuesday and would be willing to consider a side trip of a reasonable distance to help these systems find a new home. ------------------------ Amiga 1200 with ACA-1233 accelerator fully populated + an FPU. Also has CF card installed, PCMCIA Ethernet adapter and Indivision ECS ScanDoubler with DVI output. Includes mouse, joystick, a stack of 3.5” floppies, A500 PSU (works fine with 1200) and an internal floppy drive (which is not in the case at the moment). Fully functional system. Tell me if I’m crazy with where I am numbers wise: System: $170 Accelerator + FPU: $180 Indivision ECS: $75 + CF card adapter/CF card/100 3.5” floppies… Let’s call it $400 for the entire thing which seems like a great deal to me.. Certainly more than I put into them! :) This system also comes with a stack of Amiga and Commodore assembly and related books. C64 programmer’s ref is in there too. ------------------------ TRS-80 Model II Fully functional, no significant damage anywhere. Internal Shugart works, includes another Shugart that was known to be working last it was powered up. Comes with original owners manual in the original binder. P&T CPM and about 80-100 8” floppies. The original PSU had failed and has been scrapped. It has a modern switching PSU in it with a new fan, making it very quiet. Also includes bare boards for the HANS-01 IDE to TRS80 Model II adapter so you can attach a modern IDE/PATA drive to it. It’s harder to put a number on this one… The spare Shugart on its own can be valuable, as can the floppies. Let’s say something north of $300? Also comes with a set of P&T CPM manuals. ------------------------ Just in case anyone would want a non-8-but system, I also have a Quicksilver G4 with OS 9.2 installed and working. Original keyboard, mouse and 20” cinema display. The display is bright and clean with no dead pixels. The Quicksilver case is a bit beat up; the zip drive is in unknown condition (whines when you put a zip disk in it) and someone swiped the airport card out of it at some point. Any reasonable offer that doesn’t involve me putting it into a big box and paying UPS to carry it away. :)

You folks in the MD area will be disappointed to hear the Baynesville Electronics is closing its doors: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-county/towson/ph-tt-bay… I only visited there once, but it's the kind of that we fixer-uppers needed to have around.
