Long night!
by Evan Koblentz 15 Apr '16

15 Apr '16

Had lots of helpers today. Corey/Jeremy, Jeff B., Jeff G. (Bags, not Galinat), Tony, Bob F., Alex D., Ian, Dan, Don, and Chris F. .... sorry if I forgot anyone! Started today at 8:30am. People arrived throughout the day. We set things up all day. Pizza lunch and we went to late dinner around 10pm. Jeff B. and Dan came back to museum for another hour or two. Bob and I didn't finish until 3:30am! There is a lot we * didn't * get done in the museum and for the show. At this stage every year, I realize that wherever we stand is final. We did our best. And now, it's time for two hours of sleep for me. :( Please be patient when I'm on fumes tomorrow night.

Car trouble enroute to VCF East
by Alexander 15 Apr '16

15 Apr '16

Well folks, seems my car decided to break down on the NJ Turnpike enroute to Neptune. I'm getting it towed somewhere safe, and all that jazz but I may end up needing to hitch a ride here or there depending on how rental cars work out for a bit. I know some folks stay in the Holiday Inn in Neptune, where I was planning to stay. -Alexander 'Z' Pierson Sent from my pocket telephone.

recording video and audio at VCF East
by Steven Michelsen 13 Apr '16

13 Apr '16

If the room you are video-recording in is using a mic and speakers, the audio should be OK. It won't sound like CNN but should be legible, like this one from last year... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sidooQfvH4I Introduction: I'm Steven Michelsen. I signed up to this list yesterday. I have been a freelancer in the A/V business for 35 years. I programmed multi-image slide shows for corporate meetings and such, back in the '80s on an "AVL Genesis" - either as a branded PC, or with a "Genesis card" in an 8-bit slot in an IBM, Compaq or clone. Now I do powerpoint for a living. Same show, different technology. In recent years I have had a fit of nostalgia for the business as it was back in the day, and of course the gear that I worked with. I am now surrounded by IBM 5155s, Compaq portables, and some AVL branded computers, all in various states of repair. Not to mention slide projectors, dissolve units, etc, etc. Here's my AVL page: www.stevenmichelsen.com/AVL Anyway, all this talk tempts me to bring along my video camera and tripod on Friday (I live in northern NJ). Afterwards I can hand over any video files via dropbox or whatever you like. Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------------- You're both right, but we are dealing with very limited resources here. Let's please NOT make this another "You guys should..." thread. We are all doing our best. It is an amateur event and that's fine.

Final class schedule for this Friday
by Herb Johnson 12 Apr '16

12 Apr '16

It's certainly reasonable to ask presenters to post their abstracts, some may have done so already. Brian L. Stuart said: > My early class is Analog Computer Basics. By age I'm the last of the engineers who might have even SEEN analog computers in use. I operated one and saw another in use to model a chemical plant. These are a different world of computation from digital logic. I suggest anyone interested in this talk, do a quick read about "differential equations" first. That's the equivalent of telling someone "learn Boolean logic before looking at TTL circuits". If that's too abstract, look up how a pendulum works, a bouncing ball, stuff like that are all differential equations at work. Herb change is good -- Herbert R. I feel like I'm pulling an AOL "me too" with Ian, especially since his line about being abstract applies very well to me too. My early class is Analog Computer Basics. I plan to go though the basic idea of electronic computing without bits. The first few minutes will be a quick overview of key ideas in electrical engineering. The second segment will look at using operational amplifiers to create mathematical building blocks. The remainder of the presentation will go through an example of modeling a simple physical system and illustrating it on a Comdyna GP-6. The second session I'm part of is on the ENIAC. Evan and I are basically tag-teaming about the ENIAC. I'll let Evan speak to anything he wants to say about his part of the presentation. My part will focus on the technical details of how the machine worked. I'll also be talking some about how it was programmed (primarily in its original mode of operation, but as time permits I do plan to talk a little about the instruction set architecture implemented in 1948). Several aspects of the machine's operation will be illustrated with an ENIAC simulator I've been developing over the past few months. I'll also echo Ian's offter that I'll be glad to adjust the focus and emphasis of my talks to address things that are of most interest to the audience. Hope that's helpful to anyone trying to decide which sessions to attend. BLS

So you put the original > monitor and source back together and the problem is > still there. Very frustrating. > > Bill S. > > > Bill, First off i am assuming that we are talking about conneciting an NTSC style source to an older NTSC CRT based monitor. I will not get into the issues of using ann LCD/Plasma to display NTSC... I am going to cover the 2 most common causes of "fuzzieness". 1. Convergance, this is where the 3 electron beams from the CRT do not meet up percicely at the shadow mask/apature grill of the CRT, thus the beams strike the wrong color of phosphor. this can easily be seen with white text or lines/boxes, you will see that in the center of the white area everything is white but then there are little color "fringes" of red, green or blue. The procedure is differnt forn diffent styles of monitors/tvs say Trinintron vs non trinitron, but if the monitor/tv has a menu system see if you can find a convergance menu (sometiems a service menu) and select the options for comvergance and alllign everything meet in the center, for convergance you leave the green alone and move the red and blue to meet green. If there are not menus you will have to get inside the monitor, for non Trinitrons the convergance adjustments are generally on the neck of the tube as a set of movable magnetic rings on the neck of the tube, they get rotated to change the allignment. Real old sets have a "Convergance Panel" inside the set with the adjustments as a large field of pots and coils. For Trinitron based monitors, they have the magnets on the neck of the CRT as wll as a "H-Stat" atjustment on the flyback, you adjust that to get things as close as you can horozontally then go to the rings on the neck. For most older monitors convergance is a compermise, it will always be best in the center and drift out twards the edges of the tube, you just get it as good as you can. 2. Focus, this is general fuzziness even when the convergance is good, as such the convergance needs to be close before focuse can be properly adjusted. This is an internal adjustment, sometimes as on Trinitron monitors the focus control is on the flyback, but on most monitors it will be genrerally in the same HV area as the flyback, you just adjust for the best results. Hope this helps. -- Matt Patoray Owner, MSP Productions KD8AMG Amateur Radio Call Sign

I posted the queue here in a log file: http://www.vintagecomputer.net/digital/MicroVAX-3100/show_queue.txt This line looks suspect: LPD queue on 10.36.1.11 My network internally is 10.1.10./ like most Comcast Business customers. I don't have any LPD anyway, no need to print or connect to anything. I don't want to simply delete the queue in the event I harm something. Maybe someone can advise with this at VCF East, I will be exhibiting this machine there. FS: Intel iUP-201 Standalone EPROM Programmer
by Systems Glitch 11 Apr '16

11 Apr '16

Decided to sell my first non-homebrew EPROM programmer, an Intel iUP-201. Looks like this: http://www.tulsa-ads.com/Broken-Arrow-/Children-/Safety-and-Fire-Safety-/In… Mine has a "universal" F27/128 programmer pod in it, which programs: * 2716 * 2732 (Vpp = 25V) * 2732A (Vpp = 21V) * 2758 * 2758S * 2764 * 27128 * 2815 * 2816 Additionally, I've found SEEQ 2K x 8 EEPROMs will program as 2816s. It has a full front panel for editing/modifying ROM contents. You can load a number of small ROMs into memory and program into a single large ROM, or split a large ROM into smaller ROMs. I used it for programming my first 8085 single-board homebrew (the blue protoboard first pictured): http://www.glitchwrks.com/2010/09/02/8085-sbc Works, plastic is yellowed, chipped bezel in the top-right corner of the display area. This listing is pickup-only at VCF East. I'll list it on eBay if no one here wants it. Open to offers on price. Thanks, Jonathan

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] need DOS for leading edge model D

This is what came with my Model D when it was purchased new by my grandmother: http://filedump.glitchwrks.com/software/vintage/leading_edge/ LE-branded MS-DOS 2.11, I believe those are WinImage raw images. LE word processor is there too, which is a pretty good word processor. I'm told it's a knockoff of Wang's hugely successful offering. Thanks, Jonathan

museum report

Steve A. and I worked for several more hours in the museum today. Big accomplishments: finally hung our banner outside the building (Steve is fearless on an extension ladder!) and got the stanchions/chains set up inside. Steve being immune to gravity: http://vcfed.org/evan/ladder.jpg. Our sign next to the surfer group's sign: http://vcfed.org/evan/vcf_surfers.jpg. We only used the grommets on the corners. I thought we'd need the ones along the middle/edges, but today was very windy and the sign barely billowed at all, so it's probably all set. Perhaps we will install the middle bolts on a warm sunny day. For now the sign is mounted tight, it looks good, and it's definitely not going anywhere. Our homemade stanchions tend to get bumped into and moved off-course by visitors. Easy way to deal with that: we took a fine-tip black Sharpie and traced the bottom of each stanchion base. That way, it's obvious where they go back. We also cleaned more, moved lots of stuff back to the warehouse (including our outdoor-style trash can), and purchased a nice indoor-style can for the museum. Picked up a couple of rolls of blue duct tape, which we'll use to create a walking aisle around museum exhibits. We're not worried about the tape ripping up the gray paint on the floor because we are a developing a creative and fun re-painting plan for the floor this summer anyhow. I stayed up extremely late last night and found a nice (and simple) way to format all the microcomputer signs. Going to print and hang them on Tuesday. The frames we ordered (24 pack for the larger 13x19 frames) arrived; we'll use those for the larger systems and in various other places around the museum. The only major thing that won't be done in time for VCF East is setting up the Android kiosks. That will have to be a summer project.

Looking for Tektronix 4010 series hardware
by Stephen A Edwards 10 Apr '16

10 Apr '16

A apparently rich friend of mine is looking for a Tektronix 4010-series storage display terminal, preferably a 4014, and possibly also a 4050-series computer. Anybody have or know of one of these big, heavy unique monsters for sale? This is a big too specialized and rare even for eBay, it seems. -Stephen

OT: printer cartridges
by Evan Koblentz 10 Apr '16

10 Apr '16

Ran out of printer ink around 10ish tonight, so I spent the next hour chatting with the model train guy across the hallway. Cartridges came up. He said, "Doesn't the Walmart 15 minutes from here have them?" I said sure and maybe I'd go there tomorrow. He said, "They're 24 hours." Doh! I had no idea. 20 minutes later I had the cartridge. :)

Ken G. (a friend of Tony) and Steve A. joined me to work in the museum today. We spent a couple of hours fighting with the 13x19 printer and determined there's a bug in LibreOffice when printing that large in landscape, because it works fine in other apps including MS Office. We also fixed up some display case issues, painted the 3D-printed "k" that was missing from the StorageTek logo, tied away more of the cords/cables, and did some cleaning. I'm pretty much done for tonight due to a couple of the printer starter cartridges being low already (it has black, cyan, magenta, and yellow). Staples opens at 10am tomorrow... I'll look for more cleaning to do and put out more decorations. Steve is coming back tomorrow to help again. He is donating a (third!) extra-long power strip and customizing it tonight by splicing in a 12-foot cord to reach where we need it.
