I-95/I-195. No tolls! I-95 goes direct to PHL too for those that might be flying in/out. It's fast too save for during the rush hour but then, what route isn't? Typically, there's some conjestion due to perpertual I-95 construction circa the Vine Street Expressway up to around Girard Ave. interchanges. So, go have a cheesesteak and a beer, and wait out the end of rush hour. Gino's, Pat's and Jimmy's aren't far off I-95, and the Reading Terminal Market is also an interesting experience not far off I-95 as well.

Trains are fine in the UK and .EU -- I have ridden them often when on the eastern side of the Atlantic swamp -- but there's just no comparable equivalent when here in the states. I-95 to I-195 is about as direct as one can get and it'll keep folks from getting lost on the roadways. The added benefit, no forced donation to Uncle Sam via tolls!

May 14 -- New museum open house

I propose that we have > our next repair workshop coinciding with this event. It > would be very good of us InfoAge-citizen-wise if lots > of us show up that Saturday... You put this as a proposal, so it's a request for comments. I recommend against this proposal, to link a repair workshop with the grand opening event. The point of a repair workshop is to work, on repair. This Saturday event would eat up almost all of Saturday, in preparation and the event itself. But I may attend the grand opening, as you said that's supportive of InfoAge. You might consider some other specific VCFed museum activity that would coincide with and support the opening event. A demonstration of repair for instance - like straightforward repair of common vintage computers, that's something you'd not demonstrate during regular museum operation. As it's a month after the VCF-E re-opening of the museum, it's not reasonable to make a special exhibit. But it's possible there's some "crossover" items you could show, related to other InfoAge groups. For instance, radio amateur's early use of microcomputers for networking, repeaters, Morse code. I have some artifacts of that sort I could lend. Also you might make a poster showing "before" and "after" to make the point about VCFed use of the new building. So I've made positive counter-proposals, about your proposal to support the InfoAge open house. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

Thought - might not be good to have a formal workshop, but it does make sense that our club show up in force to help out, show our colors regardless of what we do, and if that means some make on the spot repairs in response to a specific issue that comes up, it's good that we come prepared just in case. I remember it being a "bike allowed" route, but can't speak from experience on that. Regarding bringing bikes onto NJ transit: It's technically only allowed if you are stopping at a station that has a dedicated platform level with the train. For Belmar you are expected to go down steps, and hence you're not allowed to exit with a bike at that stop. The closest station that exits at a platform is Asbury Park. I would have assumed this would be the sort of thing conductors would turn a blind eye to (after all, what's the real harm of bringing a bike down three steps?), but I actually witnessed a physical altercation between the conductor and a rider trying to get off at Belmar with a bike, so at least in some cases they take it *very* seriously. Jeff G. and I worked in the museum today from 8am-3pm. Jeff B. joined me for more work from 5pm-9pm. In the daytime slot, we installed the large monitor donated by David G. last year. It is 50" (horizontally) and works great. We put a shelf under it (great place for a videogame console to keep us entertained between museum visitors!) along with two shelves on the opposite side of the bench (with room for more shelves later if needed). We also did some set-up with the Prime 6550, added a handle (kind of silly-looking, but it works!) to the PDP-11/785, set up most of the office PC, and finished cabling the microcomputers. We also did some clean-up work. In the evening, we did a bunch more cleanup, rebuilt some of the outdoor signs for VCF East, and tested the Amstrad PPC 640 (it works but we need a system disk). Also, we got two more industrial-strength long power strips from Steve A., so now there are two on each side of the microcomputer aisle. That means nothing is daisy-chained, unlike in our old rooms. We just need one more for the workbench. Corey's picking that up in the next few days. Here are some pictures: http://vcfed.org/evan/screen.jpg (pipe on the right side is in front of a speaker, not the screen itself) http://vcfed.org/evan/powerpole.jpg (this is the new power pole on its own own 20A circuit for the center aisle of microcomputers, it has four outlets on the side, and next time we'll paint the wooden block underneath it to match the floor) http://vcfed.org/evan/handle.jpg (new handle -- also a new lock) http://vcfed.org/evan/galinat.jpg (kudos to Jeff G. for making a lot of long trips to the museum and doing tons of manual labor for us lately) http://vcfed.org/evan/protect.jpg (step away from the blue box...) http://vcfed.org/evan/allbench.jpg (new shelves on left, new shelf under TV too) http://vcfed.org/evan/twoshelves.jpg (room for expansion) http://vcfed.org/evan/oneshelf.jpg (let the Pong commence) Back at it this weekend! Need to set up another computer or two, put the decorative backings on all the microcomputer shelving units, start making the signs, do more cleaning, and who knows what else.

InfoAge is hosting an open house / grand opening event on Saturday, May 14 from 1pm-5pm. This is for building 9010-A which houses our museum, the model trains group, an event room, the surfer group, some radio club stuff, and possibly a wireless operators' group of some kind. From what I hear there's going to be a party atmosphere -- food, drink, etc. Depending on other stuff in the InfoAge calendar, I propose that we have our next repair workshop coinciding with this event. It would be very good of us InfoAge-citizen-wise if lots of us show up that Saturday, so let's stay that night and Sunday to work on stuff.

train service to VCF-East
by Herb Johnson 30 Mar '16

30 Mar '16

A European colleague of mine, wants to attend VCF-East from New York City. Their obvious question is, "what trains do I catch?" as trains are normal means for European travel. Also, frankly, the cost of car rental and tolls makes train travel a better deal for travelers. I'm aware the nearest train station is several miles from InfoAge. I don't expect VCF to provide pickup/dropoff. But this is an old question and should have a stock answer now. Please describe the nearest train station to the event, and what likely trains from NYC (optional Phila) would be reasonable to take, and a Web link to schedules. Again, I assume this is old information and not that hard to verify; and would be useful to other VCF-East attendees. I don't use the trains, so I don't know. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Wanted: TRS-80 Model 4P Lid/Cover
by Todd George 30 Mar '16

30 Mar '16

So I found a 4P. It met almost all of my criteria. Sadly it is missing the cover/lid. There are two styles of lid, I need the plastic latch version, not the metal Frankenstein's neck bolt style. I know it's a long shot, but if anyone has one in any condition (yellowed, broken, cracked would be OK!) please contact me off-list. I would also consider purchasing a "for parts" machine. I don't think the lids are marked as to what they belong to. If they are, it's not overly apparent. So if you have one kicking around I would think it's possible to not even know what it goes with. Thanks! -Todd

8 bit ethernet card for thinnet and AUI
by Joe Herdler 29 Mar '16

29 Mar '16

Hi, I lurk on this list every day, but seldom post. Today I will. I am looking for a few things. Of course there is E-pay, but I thought I would try here first. I need an 8 bit Ethernet card with an AUI connector to connect it to a transmitter. Also will need a driver for it. Believe it or not, this old machine still has a legitimate use as a data collector. Next, I am looking for an inexpensive 8086 machine. I would love a Leading Edge Model D86, but those are rare as hen's teeth. Any brand will do, just want it to work. Finally, a green or amber RS-232 monitor. I am running a Nuclear Data (now Canberra) gamma spectroscopy NIM BIN system, and need a monitor to control the unit's internals. Thank you so much! If anyone has some or all of this for sale, please let me know. Best, Joe Consciousness affects the medium. Think happy, be happy, and happiness will follow you.

Help needed: PS/2 or a clone
by Evan Koblentz 28 Mar '16

28 Mar '16

Adam and I attempted to set up a computer for the Win 3.1 museum exhibit. It didn't go so well... We tested a clone 386 (one that was in our warehouse expressly for this purpose) but its HDD was DOA. Then we tested half a dozen variants of IBM PS/2. Only one of them had a working HDD, but it's an 8086 which is below the 3.1 minimum specifications. We could not put that drive into the clone 386 because the drive uses an ESDI connecter. We probably have a suitable drive in the warehouse, but it was taking too much time -- we cant stop to restore a machine with the big show looming. There is no time between now and then (museum beta opening) for us to spend time gathering the right parts and all. Can someone loan us a ready-to-go 286 or 386 with 3.1 already installed and tested? We'll put it in the museum for the show weekend and then we will determine a museum-owned solution later.

Adam and I were at the museum from 10am - 9pm today. We got tons of stuff accomplished! I will not remember everything; here are highlights: - Moved about 15-20 boxes of stuff (and many empty ones) back to the warehouse - Swept the floors - Reorganized a few microcomputers - Cabled 50% of the micros (the ones along the wall; next week the electrician is installing a power pole for the center aisle) - Figured out a better place for our main desk (Adam's experience as a school teacher helped a lot) - Added an AT&T Unix PC to the exhibit - Attempted to set up a Win 3.1 PC, had problems. Will explain in a separate email - Tony visited this morning to retrieve painting supplies - Corey stopped by to work on Apple and Commodore systems for the game programming hackathon at VCF East

27 Mar '16

Yet again, Jeff G. and Tony joined me in working on the new museum today. (Tony in particular has put in waaaay beyond his share of the work lately. He even worked here a couple of days during the week with one of his employees!) We did several small projects (along with Jimmy from the model trains group who helped me after-hours tonight), but today's big accomplishment is we finally finished the double doors. Paint is done, the lock is installed/working, reinstalled some previously removed door window trim, and upper/lower barrel locks are installed on the side without the handle. Smaller projects done: replaced lock in the 11/785 door, moved Bendix desk back into position, adjusted that desk's feet slightly higher so the file cabinet fits under it, moved George back into position, put a "door blocked, use other door" sign on the hallway side of the center door, put a trash can into the workshop area, further secured the front posts of the workbench, tested new printer, moved various things around :), and cleaned (but only a little). Some pictures are at snarc.net/temp-vcf/ because I forgot to bring the vcfed.org password with me.... Adam, me, and Corey will be here tomorrow. Going to focus on clearing lots of the clutter and that sort of thing.

FS: Another Tanner/Digital Research 64K Static RAM for S-100 Bus Tested/Working
by Systems Glitch 27 Mar '16

27 Mar '16

link: http://www.ebay.com/itm//272188605675 >From my last listing: These are, in my opinion, exactly the kind of boards you want for old 8-bit S-100 boxes. Fully static, you can swap 2716 EPROMs in if you need to, and very low power draw. Pretty much the only kind of RAM board you can use if you want a full 64K (or close to it) in an original Altair with the original low-wattage power supply. This one has sockets for the last four RAM chips. The last two are not populated, as it came from a heavily modified Altair 8800 with a Turnkey card -- RAM from 0xF800 - 0xFFFF was disabled to allow the Turnkey card to co-exist. I can provide/install a socket and 6116 static RAM if desired. All four tantalum capacitors have been replaced. Fully tested on my IMSAI 8080, including phantom. Memory was tested with the Vector Graphic ROM monitor's memory test routine ('T' command). You'll find the manual listed under Digital Research (not sure if they bought Tanner, or what). The manual states the board is IEEE-696 compatible; however, that just means it follows IEEE-696 signal designations -- it is not 16-bit compatible. Thanks, Jonathan

We'd like to get this done soon (lest the person think we are not taking it seriously), but there is no urgency to bring it all up to InfoAge -- that could happen in the summer.

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] How was TCF2016 ...
by Jeffrey Jonas 24 Mar '16

24 Mar '16

I had a fine time chatting with Galinat, Herb, Chris (dealer in front with nixies) and other folks I meet only at the Trenton Computer Fest. I always come home with great project ideas. I attended only one talk about new IoT (Internet of things). There's a $2 single chip solution with a 32 bit core (probably ARM), built in radio, crypto acceleration and other goodies. Quite the enabling technology to DO THINGS RIGHT *if properly implemented*. No Arduino needed! It might be right up there with the FTDI USB-serial chip for drop-in ease of use. I'd say many of the talks were timely and useful, with more scholarly topics and speakers with impressive bio/CV. I lament the loss of the flea market. I remember when it was so huge that 2 days was not enough to cover it all. Many regulars are gone, like the vendor with the camper selling laser tubes with brick power supply, solder spools and such. Gurrr, I can't remember the dealer who I always counted on for connectors and small parts. The only dealer who sold adapters like machine cord to 2 plain outlets. Not there this year :-(

How was TCF2016 besides the booth?
by Herb Johnson 24 Mar '16

VAXman writes to my post: > Herb Johnson via vcf-midatlantic writes: > >>I went to a number of talks; quality varied. Mostly speakers overran >>their hour, they outta work on their presentations. Talks varied from >>lock-picking to solar-panel technology. > > 'outta work'? 1) I write 400 words, you comment on the choice of one? out·ta ˈoudə preposition preposition: outta; preposition: outa an informal contraction of “out of,” used in representing colloquial speech. "we'd better get outta here" - courtesy of Google Translate My error, my intention was a contraction of "ought to", as in "oughta". It's a (regional) homophone. I ignored the spell-checker to be colloquial. 2) My post is time-stamped Mar 22 17:10 CET (I don't know why the list chooses Central time and not Eastern time). Your reply after was time-stamped Mar 22 16:15. Looks like someone's computer clock was not set forward (not sure whose). 3) These are examples of posts that ignore the content of a thread and go off on tangents that are silly or are non-informative about core topics, or lead to harsh exchanges. Or, responses to posts so brief they are ambiguous and generate excessive dithering about their meaning or value. 4) "Don't bite my finger, look where I'm pointing", one of my favorites; from Warren McCulloch. 5) (ignore, no response) Readers: vote for your favorite response. VAXman: what fits your expected response? ;) Herb -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

Suppose I wanted to order a huge amount of 5.25" disk sleeves in a custom color with the VCF logo. :-) Anyone know of a company that provides this service?

Special thanks to .... well everyone

I've been meaning to send this message for a while now. Our group has had an INSANE amount of volunteer support in the past few months!!! Raising funds, fixing computers, organizing the warehouse, preparing various details for VCF East, and most recently doing physical labor in the new museum space. I am continually blown away by how much everyone finds creative ways to help in this group. Sometimes we see the same few names over and over in the report emails, but in reality there are several dozen people who all help in important ways. Cheers to everyone.

The Academy of Country Music? Damn, who woulda thunk? > :-) Years ago, the ACM had their computing week conferences at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. I was there helping with the SIGCSE part of it. It turns out that at the same time the Academy of Country Music was also having an event in the hotel. It was absolutely hilarious to see a bunch of computer nerds and a bunch of people in cowboy boots staring at ACM signs trying to figure out which ones where theirs. BLS

Best place to buy rack screws
by Matt Patoray 23 Mar '16

23 Mar '16

I am looking for a good place to buy rack screws, I was hoping to find a place i can just stop in and pick up a pack of 100, tried Guitar Center and they told me they have to order them, unless i wanted some "specialty" ones they had in stock that where $9 for 10 screws, yeah I dont think so. I am reassembling an Ampex VR-1200 Quadruplex VTR and it has a lot of rack mount modules. Vintage Computer tie in, lots of Mini and S-100 bus computers are able to be rack mounted, and the VTR was able to used in a PDP-11 comtrolled editing system. -- Matt Patoray Owner, MSP Productions KD8AMG Amateur Radio Call Sign

So I have a gmail account since this list doesn't work with my msn account. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it. Whenever I post something, my own post doesn't show up, but when someone replies, then I see my post. Is anyone else experiencing this?

today's museum report
by Evan Koblentz 23 Mar '16

23 Mar '16

Tony, Jeff G., and I all played hookie from real life to work in the new museum today. We did lots more work on the double doors which should be ready for their first coat of paint by tomorrow afternoon, strengthened the front three posts of the workbench so they don't move around the floor, rearranged some of the microcomputers to make a little more space, and brought in some minicomputers from the warehouse (we'll move more of them next time). A picture: http://vcfed.org/evan/minis3-22.jpg ... some of these need cleaning, of course. Back at it this Saturday.
