Looking for PROFS or OfficeVision/VM tapes and manuals
by Dan FitzGerald 02 Aug '24

02 Aug '24

I was wondering if anybody here happened to have install tapes for PROFS or OfficeVision/VM. I'd like to get that on our system in the lab at some point, and would need the tapes (or images) and some documentation for how to install and configure it. OT: Dedication of the Marconi Hotel Dining Room Doors from Mike Ruane
by Jeffrey Brace 02 Aug '24

02 Aug '24

To All - You are cordially invited to the dedication of the new Dining Room doors of the Marconi Hotel on Sunday, August 4 at 1:00pm. The dedication is to honor Pat Thecker for the many years of support (almost $100,000) that she and her husband, Duncan, provided to InfoAge. There will be a small reception immediately after the dedication. Many years ago, Pat and Duncan gave us a check for $5,000 that we had hoped to use to replace the doors that Fred had fabricated for the dining room. Last year we were finally able to free up some funds to construct the door and we had them made early this year. We are working now to get them installed and will have the formal dedication on August 4. As I said above, we are honoring Pat, a former Board member and an Emeritus Trustee, who is coming in from Illinois for the dedication. I think it would be fitting for as many of the volunteers to attend. Please put the date on your calendars and let me know if you will be attending. Please contact your members about this event. Thanks!! Mike

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] quick HOPE report
by Ken 31 Jul '24

31 Jul '24

I also spent the majority of my 3 HOPE days at the VCF tables, helping and demo'ing and chatting and directing a lot of folks to the 2025 VCF East event. (I was first introduced to VCF - and saw my latent vintage computing fetish initially activated - at HOPE 2000!) It was a fantastic display, and I really appreciated the representation this time of those trainers and circuit demos. It added so much more than just having the familiar late 70's/early 80's home computers. Thanks to Doug (new to the hacker conference!) who I think was behind that addition. Some brilliant and varied people stopped by with all sorts of expertise and stories to share, and I hope some will wind up exhibiting at InfoAge next year! Also of note was Jeff Brace winning the HOPE talent show via some karaoke prowess? Thank you Doug, Dean, Jeff and Jeff! - Ken At 7/25/2024 02:07 AM, Jeffrey Jonas via vcf-midatlantic wrote: >I had a blast staffing VCF's exhibit at the HOPE conference on Friday & >Saturday. >Many thanks to Doug, Dean, Jeff Brace for carpooling and making such an >engaging exhibit. >It was perfectly on-target for the audience, limited by what fits in one >car. >I was in my element, meeting folks I know from Unigroup (NYC Unix/Linux >professional society), >NJ Linux group and other circles of friends. > >The exhibit started with the Discrete Transistor 555 and a breadboarded 555, >showing how the first chips were only dozens of transistors. >The Bell & Howell chip trainer's flip-flops were wired as a binary counter >next to a single chip counter doing essentially the same thing. >That got a LOT of attention >since it vividly illustrated how the building-blocks of logic gates makes >for larger useful elements. > >Then the microprocessor trainers: 6502, 8080, 8085. >Folks adored running the ROM demos via the hex keypads and 7 segment >displays. > >The Apple 1 replica got a lot of attention, >particularly with the SD-card cassette emulator instantly loading games and >such. >Some folks really enjoyed using the WOZ monitor and peeking/poking into RAM. > >The PET, GRID and others got a lot of love too, particularly the GRID's >plasma display. >Some folks were into display tech, thus the geeking out over Doug's VFD and >LED demo. >A really great outreach opportunity. > >-- Jeff Jonas

Looking for people with expertise/equipment in data recovery

We're building an online, > free, searchable archive of born-digital and digitized objects because > most of the history of paddlesports is sitting in boxes in closets > around the world...and it's being lost. But there's a chicken-and-egg problem: > I can't write "give us money just in case we hit this problem" because > that won't fly (I know: I tried) (repeatedly); I need to wait until we > bump into it and then explain why it's important that we solve it, e.g., > "these documents have significance to X" or "this is the only surviving > video of Y" or whatever. So, pardon my analysis and advice. But you are laying out a project in public, asking for resources. So I think responses to the project are appropriate. If not, my apologies. You are asking granting institutions for money for data recovery of analog/digital media. That is, asking historic preservation people with limited digital technology knowledge, for money for not just tech, but *old* tech which even fewer people will know today. Does that seem likely to fly? No, you are already explaining to them instead, the result they DO know: historic content of paddle sports, in a social/sports context. This is not my skills-set, don't argue with me, but talk instead to grant-writing people from other institutions (maybe sports institutions) about how they succeed in getting funding for their (maybe similar) projects. also: Consider this question. Rather than going top-down, to ask institutional funding agencies for money (with the issues I raised); Why not go bottom-up? *Ask the people who own this content, and people who would enjoy/benefit from this content, for pledges and eventually donations.* I deal with the children of vintage computing developers, when they are "releasing" their parent's estates. Sometimes, the developers themselves when they retire. They'd like to see their (parent's) work preserved and appreciated (they frame it as "in a museum" but that's what it amounts to). But they can't keep this stuff themselves. They might be willing to provide dollars for conversion to easily preserved and accessed digital content. I find most people appreciate seeing their (parent's) work available online, if not in a facility, if not in restored use. If no one responded to *my* converted vintage content, I would have stopped doing it years ago. But they do, so I don't. That's what I mean by bottom-up. But it may be, the institution you are working with, would make that appeal to their constituents - not ask you to do that. Finally: lots of historic institutions are dealing with conversion of analog or vintage media to 21st century digital content. Maybe, the answer is to ally with one of *those* institutions? Make use of their *already-developed* assets, give THEM some funding? Sometimes finding an ally is more optimum than going it alone. at the least, you might learn something, from those already doing what you are asking to do. Simple concept. Also see what they do with their results, how they make them available online. Again, maybe someone else at your institution will do that part. > (But I do understand that there's a point at which asking-for-help > crosses over into really-should-be-paying-for-help, > trying to get myself up to > a baseline level of knowledge in this area In any event, if you develop and operate such a facility, they will be your *colleagues*, so you may as well start getting acquainted now. In fact, it seems to me, you are talking about a career, not a one-off project. That depends on the volume of material and the calendar-time level of commitment (sounds like years). what you do personally, is entirely your consideration, none of my business. However, when you present a grant proposal, you *already* have to make the case for commitment in time, materials, resources, and *people* - that's you, you are the people. Think all of that through. Those thoughts, might give you some leads (as you requested), about the actions you are considering. 1) how to ask for money 2) how to (learn to) work with arcane vintage media 3) how to scope out the intended work 4) whether this is work you choose to do, on the terms offered by the institution you are working with. It sounded to me, like you were looking for some directions. Here they are. Regards Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Looking for people with expertise/equipment in data recovery
by Rich Kulawiec 25 Jul '24

25 Jul '24

[ I had a couple of conversations about this yesterday at System Source, so this is the followup. ] I'm working on a large, long-term archiving project as part of a 501(c)3. It seems increasingly likely that I'm going to have to try to recover data from (1) media I can't read, either because I don't have the equipment or because it's degraded and/or (2) files in old/obsolete formats that I can't decode/translate to something contemporary. And I'm going to need some help with both, and I know that some of you have considerable expertise in this area. If any of you are interested in helping out, I'd be glad to hear from you. What I'd like to do is put together a braintrust (now) that I can consult with you when these things come up (later). Thanks, ---rsk

quick HOPE report
by Jeffrey Jonas 25 Jul '24

25 Jul '24

I had a blast staffing VCF's exhibit at the HOPE conference on Friday & Saturday. Many thanks to Doug, Dean, Jeff Brace for carpooling and making such an engaging exhibit. It was perfectly on-target for the audience, limited by what fits in one car. I was in my element, meeting folks I know from Unigroup (NYC Unix/Linux professional society), NJ Linux group and other circles of friends. The exhibit started with the Discrete Transistor 555 and a breadboarded 555, showing how the first chips were only dozens of transistors. The Bell & Howell chip trainer's flip-flops were wired as a binary counter next to a single chip counter doing essentially the same thing. That got a LOT of attention since it vividly illustrated how the building-blocks of logic gates makes for larger useful elements. Then the microprocessor trainers: 6502, 8080, 8085. Folks adored running the ROM demos via the hex keypads and 7 segment displays. The Apple 1 replica got a lot of attention, particularly with the SD-card cassette emulator instantly loading games and such. Some folks really enjoyed using the WOZ monitor and peeking/poking into RAM. The PET, GRID and others got a lot of love too, particularly the GRID's plasma display. Some folks were into display tech, thus the geeking out over Doug's VFD and LED demo. A really great outreach opportunity. -- Jeff Jonas

As above. Looking for a 14" SA-4008 for testing with the Ohio Scientific CD-23 disk system. We're at the point with it that we can get known good data off (we see FORTH source in it) but can't boot and get errors off some of the sectors/tracks. I'd like to be able to try and initialize it, but the SA-4008 I have contains useful information that we don't want to destroy! Thanks, Jonathan

Most of the equipment in the lab belongs to Connor Krukosky; the PC Portable, PCjr, and the dot matrix printers are mine. I also did the VM/ESA configuration (I run the IBM CIO's z/VM sysprog team) while Connor did the P390 and terminal hardware configuration. He also restored the IBM Memory Typewriter and repaired the (previously professionally-restored) IBM Correcting Selectric II. Connor most definitely lifted the F50 up onto that table, but we also have furniture dollies and a nice collapsing cart. Fun fact: the VM/CMS port of Space Invaders was done by a young Mike Cowlishaw, who developed the Rexx language. OT - Advice for CRT monitor price
by Chris Fala 16 Jul '24

16 Jul '24

I am looking at a used Sony PVM-97 8" CRT Black and White Video Monitor on eBay. The seller doesn't have pictures of it powered up, so I can't tell if it has burn-in. He is asking about $90 plus shipping. Can someone tell me if they think this is a reasonable price? He has a small quantity available and only provides one picture. Should I demand to see actual pictures of the unit powered up? Thanks, Chris

I assume you guys are aware of the fact that shipping has gone completely insane recently, it's not just dicks profiteering on shipping. It actually HAS become more expensive, by a huge amount. I see this directly because I frequently ship packages out. The gamer children (of all ages) have really gone ape-poop over Sony PVMs. Sigh. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

The Sony's hold up better but I would be patient. It's not too much to ask for an Ebay sale that contains a pic of the monitor in use and 100% feedback seller. I would rather pay more for something I know works and whose seller is a pro and knows how to pack and ship. That said, $99 for a known-working Sony b/w...not bad IMHO Bill On Tue, Jul 16, 2024, 9:39 AM Hopkins, Justin via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > You think $90 is outrageous, there is someone trying to get over $400 for > one in New Jersey… > There is also one in Bristol CT that they are asking $150. Minimum requirements for receiving 56K modem connections
by John Heritage 16 Jul '24

16 Jul '24

Hi folks! I'm messing around with a bunch of modems at home, and would like to know what's required to set up one system to receive 56K calls from another system. I'm able to get 33.6kbps bi-directionally (or 31.2K) with just a phone line between the two modems, and using ATX1D and ATA commands. I think to get 56K I require some equipment to simulate a digital connection, and I'm also not sure if a 56K analog modem can even receive 56K calls. Is this true? Modems I have on hand: - a USRobotics Courier I-Modem - 2 x USRobotics V.Everything, and a USRobotics 56K/X2 Sportster external modem I am also unable to get the I-Modem to connect to any of the analog modems, and although it does have the protocols to support analog, it seems like it's expecting a BRI / ISDN connection to allow that connection. Is this true? If the above are true - what's the minimum / cheapest solution for being able to at least establish a V.90 connection given the equipment I have already? Thanks for your help! John

The ASR 32 and 33 differ in only a few places many parts are interchangeable. The 33 is the "free terminal" that came with many minicomputers od the 60s like a keyboard and mouse comes with todays' Dell computer. The early homebrew era computers often used asr33 teletypes as the terminal and program storage. That's why a computer hobbyist might want the parts from a free asr32 to use for repairs of a 33. (not to mention all the DEC machines you've ever heard of, iron from HP, Varian, Cray, Modcomp, Sun, SGI, you name it. One thing I have never understood is why no one has designed and built a 5.25” floppy drive to USB adapter? (Like the 3.5” ones see all over.) Maybe for a Newer PC to Read and Write . Yes, I know the newer OS’s do not support 5.25” Floppy formats any longer. Yes, I know one is available to read floppies only. BUT, I would just plug a USB adapter into my XP laptop and use it. Launch of the Classical Computing Laboratory at IBM Poughkeepsie
by Dan FitzGerald 11 Jul '24

TLDR; Flickr link at bottom. After two years of work and a mountain of red tape, Connor Krukosky and I are proud to announce the official opening of the Classical Computing Laboratory at IBM Poughkeepsie! The Classical Computing Laboratory (sometimes shortened to POK-CCL or CCL@POK) is a historical computing center accessible to IBM employees and official site visitors, with the stated goal of our collection being available for hands-on use. IBMers can come in and use the equipment between the hours of 12 and 2 PM every Wednesday, or by special appointment. This presents a number of amazing potential opportunities, ranging from employee experience to education outreach to client/customer relations. We officially opened this past Wednesday, June 26 as part of the annual IBM MHV (Mid-Hudson Valley) Summer Activities Fair; we then continued into the next day for IBM MHV Take Our Children to Work Day. I've put together a Flickr album of photos that Connor and I took during the two events. In all but two cases, I framed the photos to keep visitors' faces obscured -- the important thing to me is seeing people having fun with these machines and using them. Here is the equipment we currently have available to use: 3193 Display Station 3278 Display Station 3279 Display Station 3290 Information Panel 5251 Display Station 5510 Computing System AT/370 (5170-599) Correcting Selectric II Memory Typewriter PC Graphics Printer (5152) PCjr (4675-007) Personal Printer Series II (2390) Portable Personal Computer (5155) PS/2 Model 25 Color (8525-004) PS/2 Model 56sx (8556) PS/2 Model 57sx (8557) PS/2 Model 80 (8580) RT/PC (6150) RS/6000 Server F50 (7025-F50) S/390 Integrated Server (3006) System/36 "Compact 36" (5362) https://www.flickr.com/gp/200991657@N06/9XH55N361M Regards, Dan FitzGerald They/Them or She/Her Classical Computing Laboratory at IBM Poughkeepsie http://www.vm.ibm.com/devpages/dfitzger

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Minimum requirements for receiving 56K modem connections

First the i-modem is a digital ISDN modem. It can not talk to a analog modem, There is a way to make 2 ISDN devices talk without an active line like you did with the analog modems, I did it in my Cisco CCNA class but don't remember how we did it. The analog phone line modems can be used the way you did by connecting them together with a phone line and dialing with the ignore ring tone on one modem and ATA on the other modem. As far as I know there is no middle equipment needed for an analog modem connection. I do remember the newest analog 56k modems had stupid drivers and were soft win modems as in no firmware on the modem, it was loaded by the driver and only worked with windows. I think you have to tell the modems to actually do 56k not just dial and ATA. or you might just need to reset the settings on the modem, it might be set to 36k. Also, if it's an external 56k modem you need to adjust your serial speed on the serial port. This is the speed the port talks to the modem and the modem talks to the port. This is separate from the speeds the 2 modems are set at to talk to each other! PET 2001 and DEC Rainbow 100B2
by Ricardo 8-Bit Desk 01 Jul '24

I just stopped by an antique store here in my area (NJ) and there is a fully working PET 2001 that the guy wants $750. I am not getting it but I hate to see it there on the shelf. Anyone in the group interested? There is also a DEC Rainbow 100-B2 complete (keyboard and monitor included) and I offered $250. The guy didn’t return yet but I might not take if he goes too much above that. In that case, I will also pass to the group. Anyone interested? Ricardo. Sent from my iPhone

Hello All, I wanted to do a little writeup from the Vintage Computer Meetup I held Sunday. Here is a link to a little blog post I did: https://www.bluewizard.net/pages/vintagecomputermeetup-30jun2024/ Short answer it was successful in a way I would have never expected! 30 people attended and I think 20 different computers where on display! This has greatly re-enforced the support that the community provides and it was a success because of this awesome community. I am looking forward to the next one in the September / October time frame. No exact date yet due to how scheduling works with the library. Thank you -Ryan

I know the password, I just can’t type it in. I refuse to pay for iCloud and unfortunately was not consistent with backups. I had an anroid with broken screen so nothing was visible but touchscreen was still working. I took a photo of same model keyboard and taped it to the broken screen so I knew where the key were. With a couple tries was able to type the password in and recover the stuff since the last backup.

[NON-Text Body part not included] You can, but I believe you need to type your code on the screen of the phone for the sync. Depending on the age of iOS there might be exploits for it but who knows. Never said what model, but I remembering changing out the screen on my iPhone SE a number of times and it wasn't terribly difficult. But I had a backup. Also if you have 64GB of stuff on the phone it's going to eat 64GB of disk space. Not always an issue but with todays SSD/NVME laptops and expensive storage it can suck. Tip, on itunes when you create a backup turn on backup encryption if you want passwords and cookies and stuff to persist in a restore.

There is a lot of info missing so I apologize if I recommend something that you may not want. If the screen is the issue it can be replaced and there are many places that do this. I understand that you may not want to repair a phone that you don't intend to keep but if it gives you the functionality you need to get your data it may be worth it. The value of the data exceeds the cost of repair in my opinion. Also then this can be your backup phone. Hope to hit up a workshop soon and am always open to volunteer. Anyways, I have mentioned to some of you in the past about my troubles with older machines, lost passwords, compatibility issues and such… this post is definitely going to require more info but honestly I have been worried about asking for help since Evan left, who had encouraged me to ask since I had helped so much back in 2018. The subject of asking for help with data recovery has resurfaced because I have a smashed iPhone (long story) with port and buttons still working but screen useless, It is frustrating me that Apple is saying there is absolutely no way to get data off of this device.
