I’ll echo everyone else’s sentiments - it was good to see the few folks I knew there, but dang was it hot! We should rename it “Swap Melt”. In any case, I just finished updating my webpages with the sold items marked off, but there’s still plenty left! (theshusters.com/bobvintage.html) - *Please* feel free to make offers - I promise I won't be insulted. Nobody wants this TRS-80 Model 4? I was really hoping to not bring it home, but alas… Also the Wang WLTC is still available. Lots of people thought it was cool, but none interested enough to take it home! - Bob Shuster

Hello! I am again trying one of my blue sky ideas, one to work on between right now, and again of the next repair weekend. That will be onsite. Would any of you good people remember the time period for a representative OS for when we can call it a Vintage Operating system? Last time I checked it was 1995. No velociraptor, he is visiting relatives in California, and Oregon and WA. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again."

VCF Tech Swap Meet Nov 2, please let your friends and groups know.

So, I know this happens every time but as we get closer to the next swap meet we get told. My group has an event and they conflict. Can you please let the groups you belong to know about the event. This should reduce the chance of a conflict and it will also drum up interest. https://vcfed.org/vcf-swap-meet/ We would like the next swap meet to be bigger and it would help to start getting the word out now. Thanks

Straight 8 repair at workshop

Decided to post to the forum this time so I can add some bad pictures to my excessive text. Summary fixed one intermittent and at least one still remains. Made progress on enabling A/D converter but not yet working. Machine was working with all demos checked when I left. https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/vcf-straight-8-repair.1248709/ You you have opinions you can let me know 1) Prefer text postings 2) Pictures were nice 3) Why filling my inbox with this stuff 4) I was hoping for an hour youtube video For docents let me know if the front panel now works reliably. I put in a card to better debounce the switches. If you get funny running put in this little program 0: 3006 1: 7200 2: 1006 3: 2006 4: 5001 Which is 0: DCA 6 1: CLA 2: TAD 6 3: ISZ 6 4: JMP 1 5: HLT If it halts its not the last intermittent I had. If it doesn't let me know what bits in the AC are changing/dimly lit and what is solid on/off. You can then try running hand across processor (right) side wirewrap pins C and D row and see if that makes it halt. If it doesn't you can wiggle each R211 card up and down slightly in its socket and see if one makes it halt. If it does let me know which card wiggling changed behavior. Cards are numbered starting with 1 from the right side looking at the card handles. If it keeps halting you can try demos again.

My take on the event: I did ok financially, but I brought a ton of stuff with me (3 SUVs full.) My goal was not necessarily to make money but to down-size the collection which I was only moderately successful at achieving. I’m not sure I would do another of these, especially not in summer again, and I don’t think I’ll be able to convince my wife and daughter to help again! I had too much stuff to properly display it all, so I think that affected my sales, but ultimately it was the heat and lack of buyers that had the biggest effect. But overall I was happy that some of my collection is in new hands. I gave quite a bit away and I reduced the footprint of the remaining items somewhat. I’ll be busy reorganizing for a while, then all goes back into storage. Any interest in anything, please let me know - I’d even be willing to meet somewhere if necessary. I have the final totals for buyers: 183 buyers 175 Buyers paid buyers (13 and older) 8 Buyers non-paid (12 and younger) By the way, it is called "VCF Tech Swap Meet" not "Flea Market". An important distinction that we settled on years ago to make it sound more than just a free for all of all types of items. This is specific to VCF at Camp Evans in Wall, NJ, Please pardon the bandwidth: The outdoor access point to support the closer end of the parking lot was deployed right before VCF East, there was no certainty on how well it would work at that distance Hardware is an UAP-AC-M-Pro, It is mounted on the gable end of the Firehouse. link: https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/products/uap-ac-mesh-pro Projected pattern: https://help.ui.com/hc/article_attachments/115014558908 Equipment was donated to CDL in support of programs at Camp Evans. Should a better option be offered by UI, CDL will accept it! Martin Flynn

Atari 800 power issue
by James 21 Jun '24

21 Jun '24

Hi all, yesterday I recapped my Atari 800 using a recap kit from Console 5. All of the caps went in easily except for the two large ones. I blame my recapping skills and not the kit to be clear. I struggled to get the heat right on the two 4700uF caps, particularly the negative side due to the large ground areas on the board sucking up heat. To compensate, I bumped up the heat to 750F and applied heat a bit longer than I would have liked (though under 10 secs). How hot/long can I go before damaging a 4700uF 25v cap? I was nervous to go hotter than 750F. It's possible I have a cold joint. When I got the machine back together it booted up fine and was usable. However, I noticed that if I turned the machine off, I could not turn the machine back on again unless I waited a minute. I tried multiple known working power bricks to the same effect. This is leading me to believe I have a capacitor issue (because that's what I changed and I can rule out the power bricks which worked fine prior to the recapping and again after the machine sat for a minute). Do you think I... (A) fried one one the capacitors and it's now faulty? Is there a way to test this without removing it from the board? I clipped the wires so I'd hate to try and solder it back in if it's good. (B) I have a cold solder joint (very possible given I struggled to keep the solder fluid. However, I would have expected the machine to not function at all if this were the case. Unless my issue is the capacitors are not discharging properly which is why I need to wait a minute before turning back on?? (C) Something else? Any thoughts on diagnosing this is appreciated. Best, James

WANTED - any piece of tech that has braille
by David Waybright 20 Jun '24

20 Jun '24

Blind people use technology called braille displays or braille note takers. 2 big names in their circle are the Pacmate from freedom scientific (used to be blazie engineering) and braillenote from pulsedata humanware among others. There is also printers called braille embossers. To the untrained eye they might appear to be a big, massive weird looking no ink dot matrix printer. I wanted to put a feeler out there since we all pour thru loads of old tech at different locations thru out the USA. If you run across anything, please don't hesitate to let me know. My wife is blind and since I'm still kicking her circa 2002 Windows CE 2.12 Braillenote qwerty keyboard 32 cell notetaker and circa 2000 Blazie Braille Blazer down the road to keep them alive I've started thinking I have an untapped source right here with all the eyes in VCF when they go looking for old tech! I have always thought the Compumatic Football was interesting, but I never played it. I did use electric football back when "electronic" meant giant simulate an earthquake that causes players to freak out and run all over the place. Updated Swap Meet "For Sale" List
by Todd George 19 Jun '24

19 Jun '24

Hi everyone, I added my first 30 machines to the swap meet list. May be adding a few more and will also continue filling in details (model number specifics and asking prices) about the ones already on the list. Please check it out! Link for easy access: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mjCygNNjyx-Vht7EiYK4IwK9kAgeztyhrAU… Quick summary: Tons of Dell Latitudes from the C-series (Pentium III and 4 era), two D-series (Pentium M/Core 2 Duo), a bunch of iMacs (Intel and PowerPC) and an iBook, some other random HP and NEC laptops, also have a Sun Ultra 27 on there which is a nice Intel-based Sun workstation (I have a ton more of these, only listed one for now, probably will only bring one to the show unless there is more interest). Not on the spreadsheet/list yet, but space-permitting I will likely have a really, really nice (new in box, still has wrapping on the stuff?) Atari 800XL and a few other random Atari things, also will grab at least one Tandy CoCo 2 machines, and a few TI-99/4A machines. I'm also going to grab whatever boxes of random crap are within arms reach in my workshop and storage. Enjoy! Can't wait to see you all at the swap! -Todd

Yes there are members in the group that collect these. If you want to let them go, you can do one of a few things 1. Put them on ebay 2. Price them and offer them up here and people will reach out to you 3. The group has a flea market and festival where these can be sold. You need to get a space and you can bring your items Just a note, you will probably make more on ebay, but if you sell privately it's easier to just swap games for cash. It's up to you. The next VCF Swap Meet is June 22 and it's in Wall NJ https://vcfed.org/vcf-swap-meet/ If you cannot make this one, System Source in MD has one in July. https://ca.syssrc.com/wp/?page_id=85&civiwp=CiviCRM&q=civicrm%2Fevent%2Finf… Hope this helps On Wed, Jun 19, 2024 at 9:12 AM m simons via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > Does anybody here collect or know of a collection of electronic and electro-mechanical games? Does anybody here collect or know of a collection of electronic and electro-mechanical games? And related items? I've got a 1970 Compumatic Football I'd like to find a good home for and I'll probably eventually get rid of a bunch of my late 70s early 80s electronic games. by Jeffrey Brace 17 Jun '24

It's expected to be 84 degrees with a heat index of 95, so bring water, a canopy tent and sunscreen! Also don't forget to get your stuff together! You have a few days left ;) Info is here: https://vcfed.org/vcf-swap-meet/ We will have John's Cracker Barrel selling out of their food truck this time. The Fire Museum didn't have volunteers available. If it works out with John's Cracker Barrel, then we hope to use them for VCF East. They are a 3 minute (1.5 mile) drive from InfoAge. Anyway, I will see many of you there! Stay cool! RE: [vcf-midatlantic] Swap meet and bills larger than $20
by Hopkins, Justin 14 Jun '24

That actually could be a warning for the entire event. Vendors may not accept any bills larger than a $20.00. That isn't a bad policy to have. Larger bills can be problematic. Swap meet and bills larger than $20
by Christian Liendo 14 Jun '24

So I'm bringing this up only because I had a bad experience and I didn't make a deal out of it, but I am thinking of putting a sign saying I'm not taking anything larger than a $20. Is it ok if I do this?

UV light verifiers like these are cheap and fairly foolproof for detecting counterfeit bills. I just wanted to know if I could do it. Because for all I know the committee might be against it for some reason and I'm not looking to break any rules. We should promote smaller bills because I usually get $1s, $5s & $10s and people wipe me out early. But that's not why I don't want to do it, I just don't want any more bad bills. This shouldn't be a policy the VCF applies to the whole event. It's a personal swap fest. The organization dictating to vendors and attendees what forms of payment and bill size they can and cannot use is not necessary. Each vendor can make their own rules.
