What do you guys always need for your vintage computing projects?
by Charlie's Computers 15 Apr '24

15 Apr '24

(I know VCF East 2024 *just* ended and I'm not asking about plans for next year, don't worry!) I'm thinking of being a vendor at next year's VCF East or the year after that. I'm getting into 3d printing and I'm going to buy a few more printers. If I 3D printed brackets and adapters and more and sold them, what do you guys always seem to need for your projects? Hard drive sleds? SCSI2SD adapters for old Macintosh computers? Floppy EMU cases? My 3d modeling skills are 0/10 so these things need to exist on Thingiverse or yeggi.com (3d print search engine) But I'll download Fusion 360 and try and figure out something, so if you guys have any ideas for useful things I could make, let me know! Items available on consignment
by W2HX 12 Apr '24

12 Apr '24

Hi all, since we can't see other people's consignment items using the new system, I thought I'd post this here. The following are available for consignment at the VCF event. Maybe someone wants to start a google sheets on this stuff? Heathkit H14 Printer $20 This printer kinda works. There seems to be some problem with the temperature sensor or most likely the comparator circuit for the temp sensor. It works when the sensor is not reporting an issue (fiddly). Also note a small part is missing on the right-hand tractor feed but seems ok anyway. SOLD AS IS. See video here: https://youtu.be/Ccdi0F2Zfkc Decwriter IV / Letterprinter LA-100 $50 Self-test works, foam makes dust. Comes with two different tractor feed attachments. See this video: https://youtu.be/JegsW2RZc2c SOLD AS IS. 100% of proceeds for these items will go to VCF! 73 Eugene W2HX My Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@w2hx/videos

If anyone on this list has a spare charger adapter for a MacBook Pro, I do not know how many watts, but it is an I5 processor, A1278 from 2010. Actually, I need 2 power adapters, but I will settle with one that works. If anybody has a working one, please bring it to VCF on Saturday even if only to try. Please find me. If you don’t know who I am, you can ask any of the Jeff’s or Ian’s. Thank you Mike Rosen Sentry TV Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

An Atari internals question
by Gregg Levine 11 Apr '24

11 Apr '24

Hello! A long since closed shop in Manhattan sold me a collection of items wearing legends for the Atari families of hardware. One such was the MMU for the computers that company made. Running the part number of CO61618 through Google sent me off to a website that presented me with the information regarding what it did. I sent them back a note that the part was in fact a HAL16L8 part, and started off as 99 PAL16L8, (I found out years earlier that after the first 100 part numbers ordered, the company could commision a mask for making them up that way.), any this site, https://www.atarimax.com/jindroush.atari.org/achip.html provided all of the other information needed to ID the other parts. Except they did not help me to elucidate what the terms on the MMU meant. One of them was the use of PB0 and PB1. Now I know of those from the SY6522 IO chip for the SY6502 CPU. Would one of you who is more familiar with the way the Atari computers work know if they were using an SY6522 that way? ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again."

Hello! A strong suggestion, do you own a smart device, like a smartphone, or a tablet? Look for an app from those people, and enter your email address. FujiNets for Sale at East! FujiTime
by Andrew Diller 11 Apr '24

11 Apr '24

In addition to bringing the Atari FujiNets for the Classroom this year (which are for sale and proceeds go to VCF) I've also built and will be selling additional FujiNets for the Atari and Apple2 8-bits. I have just a couple Ataris but a bunch of Fuji's for Apple2. They are plug in play for IIc and IIgs. They require an softSP card (not included) for older Apple2s. Fujis are $60- and come with a quick start guide. Find me in the Atari Classroom or when not in session at the FujiNet table. There are also a limited amount of the Macintosh FujiNets available from Ben at the FujiNet table. -andy

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] NJ Makers Day 2024 @ InfoAge
by Jeffrey Jonas 10 Apr '24

10 Apr '24

It was great seeing kids enjoying the Commodore 64 programs. Some took to it like a fish to water. One sea cadet was great with the drawing programs. Last year some musicians really made the music maker sound like a real instrument! Doug Crawford really built upon last year's success with easy to use cartridge based programs (instant loading and reboot!) that attracted everyone. The signs were clear and had cheat-sheets on the back. All skill levels were equally welcome, from "what is this?" to "how do I program in BASIC" (starting with a 1 liner, then getting to larger more elaborate programs). Mark did a great job bringing all the Infoage groups together. I enjoyed being in the room with everyone again. Dan Lieb (shipwreck museum) was hands on with teaching knot tying and a make-your-own Cartesian diver in a soda bottle. ARC (antique radio club) demonstrated codec & ciphers and vintage radios. John Cervini represented the Electronic Warfare group with laser, infra-red and spectrum demos. Mark had the laser cutter etching custom tokens for everyone. The fallout shelter, military vehicles and others all participated. Like last year, winners of the hack-a-thon did amazing presentations of their project with the confidence and enthusiasm I remember from my science fair days (as a participant). I am glad to be part of the event. -- jeff jonas

I'm a long-time VM/CMS XEDIT user and am trying to use the DOS port of KEdit 5.0, an XEDIT clone. When I try to find a copy of the KEdit for DOS manuals online, the only thing I can find is the KEdit for Windows manual. Unfortunately, KEdit for DOS isn't exactly like XEDIT -- I can't use any prefix macros so I don't know how to do block copy and deletion. Sale: CBM 1084 CRTs (3) and a NEC Multisync
by Ryan Stapleton 07 Apr '24

07 Apr '24

Hello All, I have decided to part with some CBM 1084 CRTs and a NEC Multisync 3D. 1 - 1084 - Powers on and shows a display. Have to hold the power button in or it turns off. 2 - 1084 - Powers on and stays on but the power button does not turn off. 3 - 1084s - Powers on and works without any issues. Missing front cover for controls. 4 - NEC Multisync 3D. Sadly does not power on. Happy to take some offers and will bring them along. The 3 1084s have been tested with my Amiga 1200. I do plan on being at VCF East in a few days. I am not entirely sure what they are worth. I want them to goto a good home and not just e-waste them. Feel free to send me a private message about them. Thank you -Ryan

Consignment shot-in-the-dark question
by Dan FitzGerald 06 Apr '24

06 Apr '24

I'm exhibiting a PCjr for VCF East, and have been getting it prepped for the event. It occured to me the other day to install a paintbrush program on it, and after I was done with that it occurred to me that maybe it would be worth having a color dot matrix printer to go with it, Does anybody happen to be selling a working, period-appropriate, color dot-matrix printer at consignment this year? (But not an ImageWriter II, I am looking for something that would have been hooked up to a PCjr). If so, let me know and what you're asking for it... if the price is right I'd like to purchase it and some ink for it and get it hooked up into my exhibit Regards, Dan FitzGerald They/Them or She/Her Classical Computing Laboratory at IBM-Poughkeepsie http://www.vm.ibm.com/devpages/dfitzger

OT: Did anyone feel the quake?
by Herbert Johnson 05 Apr '24

Consider a "did you feel it?" report to USGS. Be aware of the TIME you felt "it", there were/are multiple events. Be aware of an address where you were, or you can report "use current location" if still there. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/tellus That page will have a "felt report - tell us!" window. That brings up a Q & A of simple questions including time, your location, and contact info for you. Building size, your floor, what you did. A freeform section lets you add comments. original Compaq MS DOS 1.1 for the Portable?
by Bill Degnan 05 Apr '24

Does anyone have an original copy of Compaq's MS DOS 1.1 for the Portable? Just curious what the label looked like. Wikipedia says (which may not be true I know) that the original Compaq portables shipped with Compaq MS DOS 1.1. I wonder if there was a splash screen or anything unique about it. Bill

Anyone going to VCF later going to RICM?

Hi all, I have some PDP-8/E ECRM boards that I want to donate to the RICM (and they have indicated they want them). I was wondering if anyone going to VCF might go later go the RICM in the future? I could then bring the boards to give to you at VCF and you can bring them to RICM at your convenience? Let me know! 73 Eugene W2HX My Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@w2hx/videos

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: accessing files on a Windows Mobile 2003 phone
by Bob Shuster 03 Apr '24

03 Apr '24

Update on my quest to get files off my old cell phones: I tried emulation and unfortunately on Macs with Apple silicon processors there’s no easy way to do any sort of file sharing even though I was able to get XP up and running (using something called UTM.) I considered setting up the Windows 10 PC I still have and trying there, or setting up one of the older Macs with Intel processors that I have, but ultimately (as many have suggested on here) using an actual Windows XP computer will be the quickest and easiest route for me. I posted a request on FaceBook and a friend already offered a machine. Thanks for all the input. - Bob Shuster

VCF t-shirt mistake and sale!
by Jeffrey Brace 03 Apr '24

03 Apr '24

Hello everyone, I have some bad news and some good news. Due to an error on my part I sent the wrong file for the t-shirts. It was a draft drawing instead of the final drawing. See here: https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/T-shirt_Drawing.png Since I sent the wrong file, then it was my mistake and the company can't refund. So we will be selling off these shirts at $5 a piece. Luckily there was still time to print the "real" t-shirt design seen here: Kelly Green Front <https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/vcf_2024_t-shirt_kelly_front-s…> Kelly Green Back <https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/vcf_2024_t-shirt_kelly_back-sc…> Denim Blue Front <https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/vcf_2024_t-shirt_denim_front-s…> Denim Blue Back <https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/vcf_2024_t-shirt_denim_back-sc…> Enjoy! OT: accessing files on a Windows Mobile 2003 phone
by Bob Shuster 02 Apr '24

02 Apr '24

I dug out a box of old cellphones yesterday, and the first ones I grabbed were Audiovox “smart” phones that have Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition on them (version 4.21.1088) and amazingly the batteries still hold a charge *and* they still have some data on them that I’d like to copy over before giving these away. Does anyone know how I might access the files on these? They have both Bluetooth and USB (mini-B.) I can connect to a modern Mac but while the device connects I cannot access the file system on the phone. I do not have easy access to a Windows computer. Any thoughts? Will these just show up if I connect to a Windows 10/11 computer? Also, these will be available for free should anyone have a use for them. There are like a dozen phones and associated chargers/cases. I need to go through them first and reset and/or at least remove SIM cards. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks - Bob Shuster

I take cash. I am a vendor who is liquidating hundreds (maybe over a thousand) vintage computing items from my personal collection. This is me thinning my collection before I get too old to deal with it. I was formerly a vendor at the Trenton Computer Fest for 40+ years.
