Worked on straight 8. Reported problem was toggled in RIM loader wouldn't load the BIN loader tape. Verified issue was still occurring. Since we knew we had issues with connection to cards from last workshop cleaned all the processor cards edge fingers and backplane connector using paper/paper towel with contact cleaner. Battled them during restoration of the machine was 9 years ago due to storage conditions. Didn't change symptoms so single stepped through the loader. Found the RTL (Rotate Twice Left) instruction didn't do anything. Traced it to bad transistor in R603 pulse amplifier in PB19. With transistor replaced and after figuring out I loaded the paper tape backwards the machine worked. Processor sensitivity to motion seemed fixed and running finger down cards also didn't cause crash. Memory side was still sensitive so cleaned those also. Luck didn't hold so memory was non functional after cleaning. Tracing signals with scope found timing pulses missing from W300 delay line board. Inspection found cracked solder joints on both of the board. The delay lines are too tall so get pulled on when inserting or removing boards. Think that cracked joints were present and got worse when cards removed for cleaning. After resoldering Still not working. More probing and found one signal for write was not being generated. Inspected transistors on the W300 generating it and noticed one transistor lead was all rusty. Poked it and it disintegrated. With transistor replaced machine now worked. Ran diagnostic set and reloaded demos and declared ready to go. Hopefully the problems on the W300 was causing some of the occasional flaky behavior. All board cleaned except sense amplifier boards that had additional connections. Verified moving them didn't cause crashes. The boards plugged into the memory box also weren't cleaned since they are gold to gold. Also didn't clean front panel cable boards. If I was able to accurate count that high I cleaned 227 edge and backplane connectors. Each has 18 contacts. We discussed enabling the 12 bit A/D that was installed in the machine when we got it. My memory was that wire(s) needed to be removed from the backplane to enable when I looked at it years ago. Maintenance manual says only cards need to be installed. Decision was to get it working removing wires if needed but I finished work on machine at 4pm Sunday so decided not a good time to mess further. A/D can convert with 6 to 12 bits accuracy taking 7.6 to 56.6 microseconds. Input is 0 to -10V. We discussed some what demo to use that would be of interest to the public but not too gimmicky. Still thinking about it. Have Teletype where we can print results or text graph.

ADM3a parts at System Source March Workshop...
by Herbert Johnson 08 Mar '24

08 Mar '24

> Mounting hardware - these mounting "ears" and band were taken from a > Ball CRT with a broken neck. Could be used to mount a different CRT in > an ADM3a. Just a caution on that band - *do not remove band from an intact CRT*. That metal band provides tension on the CRT against the vacuum inside versus 15 pounds per square inch air pressure outside. Yeah, 15 pounds per inch. If an un-banded intact CRT is struck and shatters, those glass shards could be propelled like a glass grenade. Most CRTs break at the neck, or the very tip at the neck. The neck is thin glass. That narrow opening slows and limits the airflow to *into* the CRT which otherwise has very thick glass. These CRTs were designed decades ago with safety in mind. A lot of small terminal and TV CRT's have a band and screw-mounts. There's no need to fuss with that band. Reattach some other kind of "ears" if needed for mounting in another TV or CRT. But I've taken TV CRTs and popped them right into ADM3A's using the same ears. regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. ADM3a parts at System Source March Workshop...
by William Sudbrink 08 Mar '24

08 Mar '24

Hi, I will be at the System Source Workshop on March 30,31. I will be bringing a bunch of ADM3a parts, including: (Names are to help identify pictures, web site below) Chassis1 - this blue chassis is an original, serial number 6961 with the 115 volt transformer. Chassis2 - this blue chassis is a type 2 (with the extra venting and cardboard interior), also 115 volts. Chassis3 - this brown chassis is a late type 2. It has no speaker (the speaker was soldered to the mainboard in late type 2). This is a 230 volt transformer unit. Its fuse holder and switch were donated to 115 volt machines a long time ago. Otherwise complete. Clean board - this mainboard has no keycaps but is otherwise physically complete and in good condition. It powers up to a cleared screen with a cursor but shows no activity on key presses. Note that the key switches are present on the board. Dirty board - this mainboard has seen better days. There is some light corrosion on some chip pins and component leads. It has some but not all keycaps. Definitely does not work as it stands. I got it this way and only took it for the lower case ROM which is being used elsewhere. Good monitor - well, good in that it works and has no visible burn in. But... it has terrible cataracts. It has not, fortunately, started leaking. Complete with driver board. Zenith monitor - Has a little screen burn and a couple of scrapes on the glass. I have no compatible driver board for this monitor. Mounting hardware - these mounting "ears" and band were taken from a Ball CRT with a broken neck. Could be used to mount a different CRT in an ADM3a. Driver1 - This is a complete driver board for a Ball CRT. Unfortunately, the anode cap was smashed, but I am including a replacement that will need to be installed. Driver2 - This CRT driver board is incomplete. It has had its HV transformer taken. I _think_ this is also for a Ball CRT but it is different from driver1. Could be useful for repairs. Bracket for mounting the HV transformer is included. Pictures at: http://wsudbrink.dyndns.org:8080/images/adm3a/ Finally I, of course, would like some money for this stuff but more importantly, I do not want to take any of it home with me! I will deal and if it gets late in the day and you're nice, you may take it home for free. Bill Sudbrink -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com

Visual 50 terminal troubleshooting
by William Sudbrink 05 Mar '24

05 Mar '24

I have a Visual 50 terminal that I am now troubleshooting. I got it in the late 1980s and it worked fine until 1995. I can't find a good schematic for it or ROM images. Its symptom is that it powers up to continual beep (solid tone, not repeated beeps) with a cursor on the screen. This is not in the troubleshooting table of the manual that I have. I know the keyboard is capacitive foam pads. I was hoping that was the trouble, but it is not. I disassembled the keyboard and removed the old pads, replacing a few with some spares I had from SOL20 repairs. Has anyone corrected this problem before? I suspect that the EPROMs are going. Thanks, Bill Sudbrink -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com

Great repair workshop! Mar 2 & 3, 2024
by Jeffrey Brace 04 Mar '24

04 Mar '24

So a few good things at the repair workshop: 1) A few new people joined for the first time. 2) A few recently joined people came back. 3) Lots of stuff was repaired. 4) Bunk bed situation wasn't as bad as I was expecting and it all worked out for everyone. 5) No damage to their brand new workbenches, but clean up by myself only took an hour. Maybe I'll get more help next time. 6) It was great weather today! Yesterday not so much. Next repair workshop is Mar 23 & 24. Take care! Pocket Zip disks and their PCMCIA holder
by Gregg Levine 03 Mar '24

03 Mar '24

Hello! At one of the Swap Meets one of our regulars sold me a collection of memory cards. Included in it was the holder for the rarely seen in public Pocket Zip disk holder. He did not have any as a part of his collection of items. I did find two on Amazon(!) and got them here earlier. The laptop that does have a PC card connector here, doesn't want to believe they exist. I have a vague recollection of talking with the late company of IOMega about the whole technology of Zip disks at a trade show a very long time ago, and the droid there showed me both. We also talked about the Bernoulli drives that the company did make, and he asserted that particular line ot technology really wasn't his forte. More about those as I continue investigating. Oh and the raptor is currently in hibernation inside the warehouse building, he'll be there until Spring starts officially. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again."

Repair Workshop CAUTION!
by Jeffrey Brace 01 Mar '24

01 Mar '24

There are new tables in the classroom space in 9059 (not the hackerspace side). We want to be careful not to damage them. Especially when soldering, but many other activities. I was asked by Marc Natanagara who is the Education Chair at InfoAge and has been renovating the classroom space to caution everyone. The repair workshop space has new tables because it is going to be a classroom that will be used by many groups including school groups. It's important to be careful with the new tables so that they are not permanently damaged. Use caution by using mats or cardboard when soldering and working with your items. Thanks so much! Silicone Soldering Mat (alternative)
by Herbert Johnson 29 Feb '24

Table and bench protective mats? Remember the goal, to protect a surfaces in quantity. Also: if the new tables are plastic, they might generate a static charge. You don't need anti-static technology, if you use non-static products like most papers and all woods. Plus a yielding surface may save a dropped item from breakage. Heat and chemicals were mentioned, also ordinary drinks and food. Suggestions: Hardboard Tempered Panel (Common: 1/8 in. 4 ft. x 8 ft.) StoreSKU# 832777 $13.98 Home Depot PATRIOT TIMBER PRODUCTS 1/8 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. Sanded Plywood StoreSKU# 1008039110 $18.98 Home Depot These would be cut on-site to fit. But I don't know the price of the recently purchased tables, or their size. Guessing they are 24 X 48, you'd get 4 table covers per panel. At $3.50 or $4.50 per table for a long term cover, that's plausible. They need not be finished, or some clear coating applied to make them water/stain proof. and you can flip them over when one surface fails. HOw to attach? Their weight will hold them down. Or simple clamps, perhaps 3D printed to size if one wants to make a project of it. But sticky tape will do. Possibly rubber cement? Other choices would include construction paper products, from office supply or art supply stores. Also a roll of brown-paper as used as packing and wrapping. This class of products is for short-term and disposable (recyclable) use. Attach with simple tape products, most tape residues can be cleaned off. Of course in public uses, paper products have often been used to cover tables. Plastic is less recycable. I think cloth is probably not a practical option on cost and performance and fuss, other than decorative purposes. This is a working situation. In a pinch? Have a big chassis with sharp corners to fix? Go to the dumpster and grab a cardboard box. Cut it open and spread it on the table, cut off the excess. Done. Who pays for these? Ask for contributions from attendees who use the tables. Taking care of tools and facilities should be a consideration by those who benefit from these resources. Regards Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Thanks for the input. I have to figure out how much space I will need and how I will lay things out. I’m definitely going for two spaces right now, but might expand to a third. My stuff is carefully curated and I need to figure out the best way to lay it out in a manner that makes it easy to see but also protects the items. I have a ton of tarps and moving blankets, but I’d rather keep stuff up off the ground, and I’m looking into borrowing a canopy of some sort for shade. I have more than is listed on my website, but that’s mostly more modern stuff, cables, or non-computer vintage electronics and such. Any advice/help is most welcome! Jeff - renting a table or two might be a consideration - do you have any idea of the fee? Thanks. - Bob Shuster (http://www.theshusters.com/bobvintage.html)

by Jeffrey Brace 28 Feb '24

28 Feb '24

Very few rooms available at Hotel Block #1 Atlantic Inn and Suites At hotel block #2: Residence Inn They were supposed to shut down February 16, but it seems that the "automated system" hasn't kicked in yet. So it may shut down at any time. It seems to continue to accept reservations. Maybe when the block is filled. They added rooms to the block. PCjr equipment needed for this weekend (March 2-3)
by Dan FitzGerald 28 Feb '24

28 Feb '24

Good afternoon! This is partly a repeat of a reply I made to the "Repair Workshop this weekend" thread, but I just thought of a second thing I need to borrow so I'm asking in a new thread. I'm going to be going down this weekend with my PCjr, with the intention of stress testing it ahead of a possible VCF East exhibit. My plan is to do a brief talk on the PCjr, but I want to accompany it with an IBM StoryBoard Plus presentation running *on* the PCjr itself. I've ordered some PCjr cartridge-to-SD adapters, but they won't arrive in time. And while I will bring my PC-AT with me for developing the presentation on, it would be even better if I could develop the presentation directly on the PCjr (so as to stress test it). So here is what I would need to borrow this weekend: * A "PCjr Adapter Cable for Serial Devices" (so that I can attempt to connect a serial mouse to the PCjr * A card reader cartridge for the PCjr (like SD-Cart JR: https://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/sdcartJR/) One with the ability to act as a R/W hard drive would be best, but if not I could make do with some testing using the non-bootable variant. Repair Workshop this weekend March 2 & 3, 2024
by Jeffrey Brace 28 Feb '24

28 Feb '24

Someone at InfoAge admin mistakenly took off this weekend's repair workshop off the InfoAge calendar. This happened in late December. I didn't notice it until earlier this week. Fortunately the space is still available. However, there is an issue. The men's large bunk room is unavailable. It is currently storing all the women's bunk beds. The small men's bunk room and the smaller "supervisor" bunk room (fits two people) are still available. It's first come, first serve for the bunk rooms if you are staying overnight. Good news is that the water heater has been replaced, the urinals fixed and the handicapped men's toilet fixed. If there are any specific concerns, then please email me. Take care! June 22 Swap Meet questions
by Bob Shuster 26 Feb '24

26 Feb '24

I think I’m going to finally give in to pressure and bring my stuff up to the next swap meet, but I had a few questions that I didn’t see addressed on the website. Will there be electricity available anywhere convenient to the swap meet (for testing)? What about wifi? And barring that, how’s cell reception there? I see that tables are not provided, but are any available to borrow or rent? I think that’s all my questions for now - thanks! I haven’t done one of these since TCF probably more than 30 years ago.

[off topic] - GaN USB chargers and temps
by John Heritage 22 Feb '24

22 Feb '24

Hey folks - Looking for some insight from the hardware inclined here. GaN USB chargers are touted as being able to deliver higher power in smaller form factors (I.e. charging a 65W USB device while the size of a “standard silicon” ~ 10-20W USB charger). I know on paper GaN can run a lot hotter successfully than silicon (>150C for example), but I’m wondering - when you have a GaN USB charger that runs pretty hot for long period of time, is it really safe? Aren’t there likely other components in the charger that don’t have the increased heat tolerance of GaN semiconductors? I’m asking as one of my GaN chargers gets hot enough to the point that I’d be really worried with a traditional PSU. It only happens if I had two devices attached that need a full charge - once they’re topped off or higher up in charge temperature is no issue. Thanks, John

OT: eSATA controller
by Mike Loewen 21 Feb '24

21 Feb '24

I'm looking for recommendations for a PCIe eSATA controller which works well under Linux. SATA 3 and PCIe Gen 2. It should have at least 1 external port with a 7-pin eSATA connector, and provide a FIS-based Port Multiplier that will address at least 8 drives on a single port. I have a Startech PEXESAT322I which sort of works, but drops dead under heavy load. The Startech is based on a ASM1061/62 chip. Please reply off-list. Anyone have a pointer to Networking class material?
by Neil Cherry 17 Feb '24

17 Feb '24

Interesting discussion came up on the Fujinet channel about networking. I'd like to toss together a class on networking. This is not for VCF East 2024. I can get my hands on a sniffer, switches, FWs, cables, clients and servers. And I might be able to teach it. I've got a lot of 'stuff' (be nice) in my head. Unfortunately I need to keep it short but need to cover some basics Stack TCP/IP UDP connection connectionless Bridges Routers FW NAT Wireshark No VLANS (but the switch will use them internally), no IPv6, no RTP, no QoS, etc. I'll need to find my older Comer networking book. Did a nice job with IP networking in a small book. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry kd2zrq(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies KD2ZRQ

You can help make our VCF Museum all we envision it to be!
by Douglas Crawford 17 Feb '24

17 Feb '24

TO ALL ON THIS LIST: GREAT REASONS TO GET INVOLVED WITH OUR VCF Computing History Museum and Learning Center at InfoAge THIS YEAR: 1. You get to hang around the great equipment in the museum and learn vintage computing tech that you likely can't get your hands on anywhere else. 2. You can repair our machines in our new exclusive repair lab- - very much like coming to a private workshop. 3. You can help improve the demonstrations and activities of the exhibits - very much like working some amazing VCF exhibit 4. You can help create new exhibits for hand-on activity experiences - if you like building electronic projects 5. You can show people around the museum and tell them interesting historical facts, do demonstrations. It is very rewarding! - very much like being a celebrity at VCF There is no minimum amount of participation- weekly, monthly, quarterly or on call to cover when we have a critical staff need- whatever you can do! Or if you can't come to Info Age at all, we can give you something to do at home. I recommend teaming up with a local friend when you come to the museum to make it even more fun. We can likely help defray traveling costs too. I've been working this effort for over a year with a small dedicated crew. We have made good progress but need a lot more in this year. Please help us make the vision of becoming the must-see crown jewel computing history & STEM introduction to computer technology in NJ - a reality. -- Douglas Crawford VCF Mid-Atlantic Museum Mgr InfoAge Science & History Museums 2201 Marconi Road Wall, NJ 07719

Almost new Mac Plus

Hello: I have a lightly-used Mac Plus in original packaging which I want to exchange for 2 Friday entry admissions to the April Wall exhibition. I would bring the computer with me, so absolutely no cost. Computer probably needs a recap and floppy drive lubrication to get working. Would anyone like to give this computer a good home? Macintosh Plus/512K for cheap?
by Benjamin Krein 16 Feb '24

16 Feb '24

Now that the FujiNet project has a prototype board for the early Macintosh I'd like to get involved in testing/developing on it more. However, I currently only have a Macintosh SE which is newer than the initial target for the FujiNet & thus not a great test candidate. Does anyone have an older Macintosh Plus or 512K (not the 512Ke, I don't think) that they'd like to part with inexpensively? I don't care as much about the keyboard & mouse as I think I can get adapters to make a PS/2 keyboard/mouse work. I'm up for something that needs some minor repairs (eg, caps, solder joints, minor troubleshooting, etc.) but I don't have much money to spend on it (eg, <$100). I'm in the Philadelphia area so I can either pick up locally or we can meet at a VCF repair day at InfoAge. Thanks in advance. -- - Benjamin Krein

From his first job as a design engineer at Tektronix, inc., he has always had a side interest in the history of computing and the electronic components that made it possible. Robert Gillespie- Mr. Gillespie started collecting tubes when he was 10, as they were like little pieces of artwork. His fascination with tubes took off when he found his first industrial tube in an old warehouse. He enjoys the odd photocells and photomultipliers, anything built by hand and not by machine. Currently, his focus is on collecting anything pre-1925 from anywhere in the world - which has been greatly boosted with his acquisition of the Gerald Tyne Collection, author of "Saga of the Vacuum Tube", 1977. Paul Kyzivat - Educated at MIT with a BS in Mathematics. Worked in software development roles for Ford Motor Company, Honeywell Information Systems, Digital Equipment Corporation, Rogue Wave Software, Cisco Systems, IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) over a span of more than 55 years. These jobs focused on operating system development, software development tools, integration and control of manufacturing equipment, distributed object system (CORBA) products and standards, Internet telephony (SIP) standards. Systems used include Philco 212, Honeywell 6xxx systems with GCOS and Multics, DEC VMS and TOPS-20 systems, Windows, Unix. John Day- Professor John Day has been involved in research and development of computer networks since 1970, when his group at the University of Illinois was 12th site on ARPANET (precursor to the Internet). Day was in industry for 20 years working for major companies such as Codex, Motorola and BBN. and a major contributor to the development of network management architecture. Mr. Day has published Patterns in Network Architecture: A Return to Fundamentals (Prentice Hall, 2008) as "the most important book on network protocols in general and the Internet in particular ever written." Today Mr. Day splits his time between teaching at Boston University and serving as the International Representative for INCITS T3 and editor of DIS 4396, the RINA standards and holds over a dozen patents. Gary Feierbach - Educated at U.C. Berkeley BA in Math and Physics and an MS in EE Software and hardware engineering. Worked for Information Management Inc., Autologic Inc., Minicomputer Technology, NASA Institute for Advanced Computation, Intergraph Corp., Sun Microsystems, Apple Computer. These positions covering 40 years included assignments in various engineering and corporate roles.
