Completed buying my tickets for the Saturday portion of this years
by Gregg Levine 31 Mar '26

31 Mar '26

Hello! So I found the email I was sent for buying the tickets for going to the show this year. I also noted and used the active link for a discount code for buying it. Suffice to say it was extremely easy to do so. Next steps are that of buying my train tickets for physically getting to the closest NJ Transit train station. However has anyone seen the velociraptor wandering around the grounds? Looking for Palm 3x devices and accessories
by Gregg Levine 29 Mar '26

29 Mar '26

Hello! Group, I'm a big pickle over this one. I need to try to find about six different kinds of those wonders. The two I do have are perfect. But their operating characteristics seem to reflect the way the company was making them, then. I need to see if this was inherent in the construction methods used then, or is more the way the Palm OS and Desktop software do things. Jeff S, this is an outside and spread all over the lawn at the backup parking lot at Infoage one, do you know if any these were setup as consignment items? Incidentally the number six is simply an outside request, I'll even accept two more. ---- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature was once found posting rude messages in English in the Moscow subway."

Sci-Fi book copyrighted in 1980 mentions a minicomputer
by Gregg Levine 26 Mar '26

26 Mar '26

Hello! I own a book written by Lee Correy, whose actual name is G. Harry Stine. That book is "Star Driver". For the curious I can supply a synopsis. In it they mention a microcomputer and they wrote a program in BASIC for handling a heck of a lot of complicated mathematical issues. One of the characters does own a classic programmable calculator for comparison. They were able to make both ideas work by the way for solving the problems in the theme of the book. Now the question, the book is copyrighted 1980, which means the author was writing it over a three year period leading up to that point in time. Is there a list someplace that tells what systems were available then? ---- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature was once found posting rude messages in English in the Moscow subway."

RIP C. A. R. Hoare

https://computerhistory.org/blog/in-memoriam-sir-antony-hoare-1934-2026/ In Memoriam: Sir Antony Hoare (1934–2026) By Dag Spicer | March 11, 2026 There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. -- Sir Antony Hoare The Computer History Museum (CHM) mourns the passing of Sir Antony Hoare, a 2006 CHM Fellow and a foundational architect of modern computing, who died on March 5, 2026, at the age of 92. Tony, as he was known to friends and colleagues, was more than a scientist; he was a philosopher of the machine, dedicated to the idea that software should be as reliable and elegant as a mathematical proof. Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and educated at Oxford in the Classics, Hoare's unconventional path into computing gifted him with a unique perspective on language and logic. In 1959, while studying at Moscow State University, he developed Quicksort, an algorithm that remains the industry standard for efficiency nearly seven decades later. It was an early harbinger of his career-long pursuit: finding the most elegant solution to the most complex problems.

MJ's of Tinton Falls Closed forever! VCF/MARCH official dinner place
by Jeffrey Brace 21 Mar '26

21 Mar '26

I'm very sad to report that MJ's of Tinton Falls is permanently closed. I went there yesterday to make reservations and found out that they are permanently closed. Our original hangout since Covid in 2020 was the Main Street Grill and that closed a few years ago. I found MJ's and we went there many times. Like Main Street Grill, there was good food and it was quiet enough to have a conversation. I will be looking for another location similar to this. In the meantime we will go to NJs in Neptune Township. Here is the article that describes the closing: https://www.app.com/story/entertainment/dining/2026/03/03/mjs-restaurant-ba… Jeff Brace

Re: FUBAR electronic music session
by bernieS 19 Mar '26

19 Mar '26

How many folks here remember VCF East 2009 hosting an 8-bit electronic music concert? Representing The Hacktory, I asked several Philly-area musicians who specialized in making music and visuals with 8-bit electronics--and who regularly did so at the '8Static' series of Philly concert/dance events--to do a concert at VCF East. They enthusiastically agreed, Evan Koblentz made time and space for it, and it was spectacular! Someone else there (who?) kicked it off by using an Altair 8800 to play The Beatles' 'Fool on the Hill' through an AM radio (via RF harmonics) as an homage to Steve Dompier first doing that at the Homebrew Computer Club in 1975. It's hard for me to swallow that this VCF East concert was 17 years ago.. -bernieS At 08:00 PM 3/18/2026, vcf-midatlantic-request(a)lists.vcfed.org wrote: > > On Mar 17, 2026, at 6:22AM, Jeffrey Jonas via vcf-midatlantic > <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: Since VCF folks are into electronic music, this may be of interest. IBM XT class 5160 computer motherboard
by Sentrytv 13 Mar '26

13 Mar '26

I have an IBM “XT” I believe, it’s model 5160 with a motherboard that is not working, will not boot at all. It is a 640 K motherboard fully populated with RAM, but has two bios chips only. My question here is, who in the group would be willing to help me work on it at the workshop? I can bring a power supply and the motherboard, video card and probably a speaker for diagnostics, but not the entire computer since the board is already been removed. I should have a working eight bit video card to diagnose with. I have no idea where to start exactly besides the power supply, which checks out fine. Please let me know who is capable of helping, and if he/she will be at the March workshop this month. Mike Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

BatMan Computer auction in NJ
by Herbert Johnson 05 Mar '26

05 Mar '26

Willow Auction House's "bat computer" seems to be one of three almost identical units. Estimated sale prices in the hundreds of dollars each. The auction descriptions say > Replica Batcomputer Head in 1:1 scale, modeled after the Batcave computer consoles in the original television series. Mixed media including fiberglass, acrylic, and electronic components. Design based on the 1950s Burroughs-Electrodata B205. Mounted on clear acrylic platform. Electronic lightbulb displays are tested and working, displaying pre-set flashing light patterns. 15" H x 34" W x 10" D. Light scuffing and wear to casing. Web search finds eventually, clear enough images of the various variations of the 1966 Batman TV series "bat computers" in the Bat Cave. https://66batman.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7564 One of these images shows a small console atop a larger console, that pretty much matches the auction units. I did not check for the "portable" version used in some Batman episodes. So these are replicas of a prop of a blinky-light toggley computer console from the 1966 Batman TV show. It would be a skills-challenge to make another one today. But with a found cabinet, surplus parts and a computer minimill to cut the front panel it could be done. There's a genre of people who make stuff like this, beyond the prop masters who make these for a living. Regards Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. I'll add two more: - A Dr Who episode in the 1980s showed the Master pulling a recording of all of history out of the TARDIS... it was a rather convoluted tape carrier, as big as he was. (I think the idea was it was supposed to be like a map, so you'd know where in history you were... but it was a tape. Even Isaac Asimov's stuff set thousands of years in the future tended to assume everything would be on tapes, or in some cases microfilm.) - We "turn out" the lights, even though they generally haven't been gas-powered since the nineteenth century. “Dial” really shook me when I realized its frankly in hindsight obvious derivation. The other day I heard that ska guys say “pick it up! pick it up!” because of the way they play guitars on the “up-pick” only. This is true. I kinda always assumed it had something to do with dancing (or as it is known to the skafficionado, “skanking”) and I have been waiting for weeks for a social scenario to jam this Fun Fact into. MailMan 3 results
by Jeffrey Brace 23 Feb '26

23 Feb '26

If you don't know MailMan3 is version 3 of the software system that runs our VCF MidAtlantic Discussion list of which you are on now. Now that it has been a few days after the upgrade. Has anyone seen any improvement in how the list is working? No Change? Worse? Just wondering as this upgrade has been needed for a while now and I was glad to finally have the time to take care of it. Take care! T-shirts and hats of defunct computer companies
by Vince Besse 22 Feb '26

22 Feb '26

Does anyone know of a company selling T-shirts and hats of defunct computer companies? DEC, Control Data, Sperry, companies like that. I've found a couple things but it's almost always PC brands, not any of the bigger stuff.

As recommended a few months ago, we are upgrading the VCF MidAtlantic Discussion List to Mailman Version 3. We have had Version 2 for some time now. It was about time. It should be upgraded by the end of the day today (2/18/2026) Hopefully there will be no hiccups in the process. Enjoy! MARCH committee town hall this evening @ 7:00 PM EST
by Thomas G 18 Feb '26

18 Feb '26

Hello all, This evening, the MARCH steering committee will be opening our second bimonthly meeting to the public for an open town hall. We're interested in trying to make this a regular occurrence, in the interest of better communication with the rest of the membership at large. The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM EST and will run for an hour and a half. Our (rough) agenda will be as follows: * Roll call * Managerial reports * Old business * New business * Town Hall Q&A session While every MARCH committee meeting is open to be attended by anyone who requests, in practice this is typically limited to the committee members, managers, and a handful of other local volunteers who are most closely involved in the day-to-day operations of MARCH at infoage. Oftentimes there appears to be a bit of a disconnect between this core group and the wider membership regarding the realities of what's going on "down on the ground" so to speak, and hopefully these more broad-focused meetings can ameliorate that. The meeting will be held using google meet, which can be joined from any sufficiently modern web browser, or directly over the phone. No google account is necessary for use. To join the video meeting, click this link: https://meet.google.com/poj-twap-qyw Otherwise, to join by phone, dial +1 929-324-9283 and enter this PIN: 194 499 181# To view more phone numbers, click this link: https://tel.meet/poj-twap-qyw?hs=5 Hope to see you there! -Thomas Gilinsky Chairman & Collections manager, MARCH steering committee

How do I value these Mac clone things?
by Joseph Giliberti 17 Feb '26

17 Feb '26

First off, I'm sorry for sending out this kind of email. I typically don't place a lot of worth on determining monetary value on vintage machines because that's not why I'm in the hobby. However, my recent haul seems to has generated a lot of interest on a Macintosh collector facebook group and I don't know how to proceed. I went and picked up a lot of Mac hardware from a storage unit cleanout in Reading, PA via Facebook Marketplace. I was interested because of several Mac IIcI and various Quadras, but I also ended up with 5 "Micromac," machines, which seem to be repackaged compact Macs in desktop cases with external monitor ports. They can be seen here: https://ibb.co/vC2qM6d9 I posted to get more information on a Facebook group and got several responses that are more or less, "I need to have one! Take my money!" Now, this surprised me. I cannot find any comparable sales on ebay or Worthpoint to base a price on. I don't want to price them unreasonably, but I also don't want to give them away. Can anyone advise me as to what they might be worth? Based on the clamor for them, I plan on donating one to our museum if we don't already have one. I'm going to further evaluate what I have today. As far as I can tell, four are re-packaged SE's and one is an SE/30. I'm assuming when I open them up that at least one of them will be battery bombed, because that's life. I want to know the condition of them as best as I can before I offer them for sale so as to not screw over anyone. Thanks in advance, Regards, Joe Giliberti

How do I value these Mac clone things?

I've sold compact Macs for many years, and I never heard or came across "micromac" cases for SE or SE/30 motherboards. That appears to be what these are: powered cases for the mobos. I'm not sure how someone found B/W monitors to be driven by these unmodified boards. Either the product includes some video circuits to accommodate more-common monitors; or someone made custom monitors for it. I don't know the product - inspection will be informative. Worst case - use a motherboard-less Mac SE/Plus/SE-30 and drive its monitor. Web search for "micromac" finds a service company that makes/sells Mac upgrades; not the same company?, no info there. Also a name for a Rasp Pi Pico emulation of the compact Macs. So it's hard to find information on the prior company & case product. Here's some links: https://www.reddit.com/r/VintageApple/comments/ard4hj/mystery_micromac_micr… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45ytL_R93Is That time MicroMac Technology took the CAT MAC (Macintosh from a catalog) mainstream! Ron's Computer Videos 6.38K subscribers, 8 months ago from Feb 2026 Discusses the micromac product and a modern 3D printed case equivalent Search of Mac magazines of the 1989 period may find ads and details. As far as value. It seems to be an uncommon item (rare is a judgement call). It's a kind of a thing. Those explain the attention and response to "I have a stack of these ..." Simple math tells me total value depends on working condition of the items in it plus physical condition of case plus intangible "gotta have" value. I myself would find an answer to obtaining a monitor, and of course evaluate working state, before I'd price and offer them. The floppy drives would need servicing for certain. Inspect the power supply and mobos for component damage potential (RIFA caps, state of other caps, battery). Regards Herb Johnson -- Herbert R.
