Possibly OT: I'm looking to acquire a LaserJet 4V
by Joseph Giliberti 10 Oct '22

10 Oct '22

Hi Guys. The aforementioned printer is probably old enough to qualify as whatever vintage means these days. I'm looking for a workhorse LaserJet 4V or another vintage LaserJet capable of handling 11x17 paper. I want to be able to print tube radio and EM pinball machine schematics without taping together 20 pieces of 8.5x11. continuous feed would be even better, but those are expensive and big. Please let me know if you have such a printer you can spare. Thank you. Joe Giliberti

VCF Swapmeet
by Sentrytv 09 Oct '22

09 Oct '22

I just would like to say that I think that the swap meet was a very successful event! It seems that the vendors, at least most of them, were selling much of their stuff. I know I did come home with “a pocket full of money”. I sold some big and heavy items. I didn’t sell everything I wanted, but that can be done at another time. I would like to see pictures also and maybe somebody can tell me where to post some. Even though I don’t have many. Thank you Jeff and all the people involved for making it in worthwhile. I observed some people turning away from entering the swapmeet from what I assumed was the entry fee cost. Please correct me if I am wrong. Help needed- watchers- at the VCF Museum Oct 12 & 13
by Douglas Crawford 29 Sep '22

29 Sep '22

There is a mass of people coming both days from the Lakewood community, families that are off for a Orthodox Jewish holiday. Its a Wednesday and Thursday. So this request is for people who have freedom on weekdays. 10am to 5pm. Probably heaviest visitor load after noon. We are having an "open house" of sorts. We will not be giving tours, we will be letting people walk through the museum. In and out. One loop. They come in the door, turn right, go around the room and out again. No touching, nothing powered on. (we will have computers in the hallway that are there for kids, running simple games) Our ideal staffing for this is a person in the four corners of museum to insure the safety of the exhibits. These are the watchers. At most you will point things out of interest and answer questions if you can. We'll compromise on # of watchers if we get less help and work with as few as two. Plus we have a door person and someone helping kids with the game computers in the hall. View/update the document here, and send me a direct email, thanks! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uFK-OA-frIheNkGsGivFB2uQ21b-DEk-fPW… ------------------------------------ (Our plan) Date & Time Wed Oct 12 10am-5pm Thu Oct 13 10am-5pm Eight step plan: 1. All artifacts inside the museum are planned to be kept off. 2. Four Commodore computers will be in the hallway. They will have monitors and game controllers and one cartridge game installed. No game changing. I'll have an 8x10 instruction card for each game on display. I expect contention for the machines. We'll do the best we can. I'll try to leverage games that give a player 3-tries-and-you-are-out" so that no one is hogging the machines. Doug will work on getting the equipment ready and set up. 3. A person greets the people at the door to tell them a bit about the museum, then admit them and throttle the flow as required. Our fire code head-count limit is 25. 4. Watchers are stationed to safeguard the artifacts and be helpful. 5. Visitors walk around the museum to the right and around at their own pace unguided. They just follow one after the other. They look at stuff as they walk & talk and read as they pass by exhibits. They go around the circle and exit. 5a. If we run at full capacity, the door person will keep the next visitors clear of the door until a group exits, then admit the next one. 6. Creature comforts This is a long gig. We will use our stools and chairs at our stations. The guy at the Atari gets to sit at the office chair. Or stand when you want to. We will switch around duties and ideally have one spare staff so we can rotate people out. Otherwise, we'll just drop out and the rest have a little more to cover. I'll arrange food, some extra drinks. Ice, etc. Creature comforts. I think I'll generally be the GAME HOST guy, as I can probably afford to occasionally leave my post and deal to check on things. 7. Remove loose items to prevent children from grabbing them. 8. Coordinate with the model train guys (GSC) down the hall. DETAILS, headcounts, etc. This plan depends on recruiting on quite a few new helpers. No experience required for watchers. Bring a friend? We can tell them a line to say like "these are the 90's micro." "This one started the internet" * I will call for help on the message board. * The ideal configuration is for 6 on floor floor and at least one alternate to fill in for relief for eating and resting. If I can get 14 people to help, we can have two crews. I'm probably dreaming, but it might be possible since 8 don't have to know much. If the headcount is sufficient, and no one but me has to do both days I'll probably be making a staffing chart that is a little different than the docent schedule. Put trash can in the hallway. We have an extra black one that we can use. Ideal staffing: 1. 4 WATCHERS a. A person at each end of the Micros b. A person at each end of the Minis. 2. 1 DOOR PERSON 3. 1 GAME HOST 4. 1 SPARE that can rotate in when someone has to rotate out. Manpower Fallback - if I can't get as many volunteers as I'd like, I'll consider cutting down to 2 watchers. One at each end one looking down the micros one looking down the Minis. Total of 10 staff, 5 people per day. At the end of the first day we'll move the game computer tables into the museum and close up. At the end of the second day, I'll need some folks to stick around and help take stuff back to the warehouse.

Handheld computers
by Gregg Levine 26 Sep '22

26 Sep '22

Hello! In the years before I got more involved in the retro computer movement, that is the activities of our group, I spent a month trying out a handheld computer unit. This contraption was originally intended by its designers, people at the printer division of Epson of all companies, to wear a barcode reader, lightpen sized one, like the one for the TRS-80 Model 100, to make use of programs written by using DOS(!) based tools for it. The thing contained MS-DOS6.22 in ROM, It got sent back at the end of the month reluctantly, mostly because at the time I didn't have a laptop who could communicate with it,via the PC Card slot it used. And of course the thing was expensive, then, for 1992 or so dollars. Naturally I'm still trying to find the things, and possibly the programming tools. Has anything like that shown up on the list of things for sale for the Swap meet? I'll even extend my wait until what we do in December, next. The whole thing also goes on that wishlist idea. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again."

KIM-1 Boards of the Past
by Jonathan Chapman 19 Sep '22

19 Sep '22

I finally herded together the extant pictures of the KIM-1s I've had in the past and did a writeup: http://www.glitchwrks.com/2022/09/18/kim1-boards-past TL;DR is that during college I found a KIM-1 in an employer's warehouse. Later, I found a box with five more! These were all Virginia Tech surplus, and one of them is likely the first KIM-1 used for classroom instruction there. I'd intended to sell some of them, since who needs six, right? Unfortunately, I was forced to sell all of them, including the one I'd intended to keep for myself, due to economic/financial situations after graduation. I've never seen anyone post about these particular machines, and I haven't seen them exhibited at VCF East, VCF Midwest, or HOPE. None of the sellers contacted me about them after the sale concluded. Is anyone here the owner of one of these particular KIM-1s? Do you know the owner? Did you use KIM-1s while at Virginia Tech? Please let me know! Thanks, Jonathan

Some are needed for a mousetrap for the museum and warehouse as the regular alkaline ones seem to have only three uses after zapping mice. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity https://vcfed.org/ <http://www.vcfed.org/> jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Help repairing oscilloscopes
by Neil Cherry 12 Sep '22

12 Sep '22

I have a couple of CDL Oscilloscopes that are in need of repair. If I were to bring them to a repair workshop would someone be able to help me fix them. I tried to disassemble one of them but was stopped in my tracks pretty quick. Wow are they packed tight. Also what would I need to repair them? -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry kd2zrq(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies KD2ZRQ

So here's my current "OMG WANT" list * DEC Gigi aka 'VK100' terminal * Northern Telecom Displayphone Plus * Tandy 200 - the big screen version of the Model 100 * IBM Simon (this is hyper-rare, but i used to have one) Things I'm interested in moving * Nokia N810 (I have several of these) * Epson HX-20 (several of these too) * ADDS ASCII terminals * DEC VT100 (might also have a VT102) Whadya got, whadya want? -- Dave Shevett shevett(a)pobox.com

ATTENTION! Steering Committee NEWS!
by Chris Fala 06 Sep '22

06 Sep '22

Dear VCF Members, This e-mail is the premier edition of what we hope becomes a regular and substantive communication from the Steering Committee. We hope to keep everyone informed and better engaged in regular operations. Highlights: - New personnel structure within the Steering Committee - Look for upcoming news about the IBM 1130 Full version: The Mid-Atlantic Steering Committee is pleased to announce an exciting organization change. To provide a little background, for a few years we had been anticipating formalizing an Executive Director position. The person in this role would be the manager of regular operations of our museum, warehouse, local events, etc. After very careful consideration and a unanimous vote, we have instead chosen to institute a distributed set of management roles which together account for all the duties of the theorized Executive Director. The result is five roles which we have added to our updated by-laws, specified in section 7 (complete by-laws can be found here): https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/VCFMA-Charter-Jul2022.pdf One major benefit of this organizational structure is that the various responsibilities are distributed across a team rather than one person. It also enables us to staff these positions from a wide range of volunteers. The team approach also takes advantage of various skillsets from multiple people. The roles have been initially staffed as follows: - InfoAge Liaison: Steering Committee Chair, currently Chris Fala - Warehouse Manager: Doug Crawford - Museum Manager: Doug Crawford - Event Coordinator: Jeff Brace - IT Manager: Alex Jacocks In case you were wondering, not included in these responsibilities is the Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner position. That responsibility is assigned by the VCF National Board and is occupied by Jeff Brace. Jeff has also been assigned by the VCF National Board the task of managing the move of our artifacts between our old and new warehouse spaces. We hope that you are as excited as we are about the growth and refinement of our Steering Committee, a cohesive team that has accomplished so much in growing our organization. Personally, I have great optimism for the continued improvement of VCF! Please know that the Steering Committee is always open to ideas, thoughts, concerns, suggestions, etc. We are here to serve the membership, and our only goal is to help VCF to thrive. In other news, please “stay tuned” for additional information regarding our IBM 1130 computer and an exciting project! Sincerely, Chris Fala Chairman of the Vintage Computer Federation Mid-Atlantic Steering Committee

Learning restoration from experts
by Douglas Crawford 05 Sep '22

05 Sep '22

Hello Local Members: If you are new to vintage computers and would like to get started learning -in person- how to properly handle valuable artifacts we have something coming up for you. We are working on setting up a session of training in combination with our quest to have work done on our PDP-8. We have invited Dave Gesswein to come in and work on the PDP-8 and possibly other equipment too. Dave is figuring out his availability. We may do this as a replacement of the Sept 10/11 workshop. Many of our die-hard repairers are going to be away so the workshop was canceled. But I'm willing to bet a lot of hobbyists are not going to mid-west, and they might want this training if we offered it. Comments welcome here in response, but if you are flat out interested in this kind of training, let me know off-list. Thanks very much Douglas Crawford Mid-Atlantic Museum Manager

citing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsundoku > Tsundoku is acquiring reading materials > but letting them pile up in one's home without reading them. We need a version for vintage computers / computer parts / peripherals :-/ Kinda like "shelfware". (yes, I still have things that were "free after rebate" from CompUSA) Going one step further: > https://languagehat.com/a-quote-on-bibliomania/ > A QUOTE ON BIBLIOMANIA. > Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy > that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity ... > we cherish books even if unread, their mere presence exudes comfort, their ready access, reassurance. I feel the same when buying electronic parts and kits. That inventory gives me the potential to do wonderful things. Yea, sure :-( -- jeff jonas

some computer items are tax free
by Jeffrey Jonas 02 Sep '22

02 Sep '22

A quick brain-dump 1) this is useful for anyone buying or selling computers & peripherals: https://nj.gov/treasury/taxation/businesses/salestax/salestaxholiday2022.sh… Sales Tax Holiday for Certain Retail Sales August 27, 2022 - September 5, 2022 P.L. 2022, c.21, establishes a Sales Tax Holiday for certain retail sales of computers, school supplies, and sport or recreational equipment when sold to an individual purchaser for non-business use. The Sales Tax Holiday takes place between August 27 through September 5 of 2022. Sellers should not charge Sales Tax on eligible items when purchased during the Sales Tax Holiday. 2) Raspberry Pi Zero and such are still unavailable but the Raspberry Pi Pico is available once again from Microcenter. I just ordered Raspberry Pis and Micro:Bit accessories from https://chicagodist.com/ 10% discount code: FIRSTORDER My order arrived in about a week. Looks fine so far. 3) panix is my main ISP. It started as Big Electric Cat, which is mentioned here: http://www.bbsdocumentary.com/ which mentions: > In 2010, after working a few years on the project, > I released a documentary on text adventure games and the people who write them, called GET LAMP. > Similar to BBS in the way it covers its technical subject from a storied perspective, > GET LAMP brings you in contact with everyone from the minds of Infocom to modern Interactive Fiction authors. > Please visit GETLAMP.COM to learn more and order that documentary. 4) Yet another reason to <3 vintage tech: it's easy to repair, unlike recent devices, thus the recent "right to repair": https://techxplore.com/news/2022-08-liberate-tractors-movement-regaining-de… The software that runs John Deere tractors was successfully "jailbroken" at this year's DEF CON hacker convention, enabling farmers to repair or retune their equipment without engaging with the company that sold them their vehicles. -- Jeff Jonas I'm happy that the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell instead of Alexander Siren or Alex Klaxon. The sound of the phone ringing would've been deafening.
