OT / Update
by Martin Flynn 08 Aug '22

08 Aug '22

The usual suspects addressed several projects at Camp Evans to move the various VCF projects along * The 100 pair aerial cable to support providing analog dial-tone to the VCF museum was confirmed to be dry and ready to attach to the messenger wire. * The new fiber between the makerspace and guard shack is routed through the cable entry vault to the fiber MDF. This allows a 10GB feed, should VCF want to use the guard shack as the entry point for VCE East. * The IP security cameras are programmed and on the bench in the makerspace (location and installation in the new museum space to be coordinated. * The upstream WAN switch to support the firewall cluster was installed, image at http://compdecon.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/fw_switch_swap.png Martin Flynn

Help with reading old round Mag tapes?
by David Horvath 02 Aug '22

Mike Loewen suggested that I join this distribution list and post my request here. I have several old round mag tapes, likely written on PDP-11/VAXen and CDC-Cyber, probably 1600 BPI that I'd like to try to extract from. Old code, old docs, old stuff :-) I live between Wilmington DE and Philadelphia PA but get up to North NJ fairly frequently. I understand the tapes may not be readable... Thanks in advance for your time. - David, KB3RIJ

Workshop report
by Mike Loewen 02 Aug '22

02 Aug '22

Summary: the museum's HP 2117F now runs RTE-6/VM from the hard disc, and the 7970B tape drive is working. At this weekend's VCF workshop at Infoage, I worked on the museum's HP 2117F minicomputer. The last time I was there, I had copied an OS image to the 7912 hard drive, but it wouldn't boot. After consulting with my HP guru, we decided that the problem was likely the Time Base Generator Board (TBG). I pulled a TBG from one of the warehouse hangar queens, and ran diagnostics on it. Everything passed, and the machine booted RTE-6/VM from the hard disc. The 7970B 9-track tape drive had been untested, because the 2117F lacked the two-board interface for the drive. A gentleman from Sweden donated the boards, for the cost of shipping. I installed the boards, cleaned the tape head, path, and the capstan. Bill Dromgoole provided a scratch tape to use, and the drive loaded tape without a problem. I copied over an OS image with the tape drive configured, and was able to backup and restore files to the tape drive. The 7970B is an 800bpi drive, running at 45ips. I procured a cable to connect the 2621P terminal to the 2117F. The battery which maintains the terminal configuration has turned to powder, and it should be removed and the contacts cleaned. The battery is a Mallory TR133 (4.5V, 600mah, alkaline), or equivalent. It can be purchased from several online battery outlets. Because the terminal configuration is lost at power-off, the configuration screen appears at each power-on. The only two things that need to be changed are the baud (9600) and REMOTE mode enabled. The terminal's printer works. Rick brought in an HP 2622A terminal, which he was donating to the museum. He dusted it off and I swapped it in for the console terminal. It works! There's a fair amount of screen burn, but it's perfectly useable. It needs a good cleaning, and I'll have to make another cable adapter to connect to the 2117F. It also needs a battery. In future, we'll be able to have both terminals online for demos. Currently, power to the 2117F is being fed by power strips. It needs to be split across two power strips, as the current draw will trip the breaker on a single strip. Power to the individual units is all 110V. Ideally, the original 208V 3-phase power distribution scheme should be restored. The unit splits two phases out to two internal power strips, one to each cabinet. The individual units would then be plugged into those internal power strips and their power switches left on. A single button on the front of the CPU cabinet would then power on/off all connected equipment. Bill Dromgoole said he could check the wiring on the plug and figure out the best way to wire it into the breaker panel. I will be writing up detailed instructions for the docents to demo the system. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: time to downsize
by Bob Shuster 30 Jul '22

30 Jul '22

Just added: TRS-80 Model 1 systems, Model 4, two Color Computer 2 systems, plus related software and documentation. Please take a look again and see if there’s anything you’d be interested in - I know several people have asked about the Model 4! I’ll go through the TRS-80 related books next - there are a lot. The Model 4 set me back a while as I needed to repair the floppy power supply (thanks to some help here) and I’ve been playing with it since! I've been regularly marking the sold and sale pending items, thank you guys so much! And once again - many thanks to those who have adopted some of my babies so far. The link: http://www.theshusters.com/bobvintage.html <http://www.theshusters.com/bobvintage.html> Please don't share without asking me. Currently just open to this group - my contact info is intentionally missing from the webpages. If you can read this, you have my email. Email me with questions or offers! Please don't make offers on the list, but if you want to discuss my process and feel the group would benefit, then by all means knock yourself out! :) Bob Shuster (Original message below) ---- Well, folks, I've gotten to the age where I need to seriously downsize my hobbies and collections, not wanting to leave it to my children to have to deal with in later years. (I had to do that recently for a relative.) On the electronics side, I've decided to concentrate on my vintage video game systems - and therefore sell off most of my vintage computer stuff. My collection includes mostly 8-bit stuff: TRS-80 Models I, IV, M100, etc. - Atari 400, 800, Portfolio, ST, etc. - C64/VIC20 - T/S1000 (including an unbuilt kit), Apple II, II+, IIe, IIe Platinum, IIgs - Wang WLTC - Mattel Aquarius - TI-99/4A - many others that I still have to dig out - plus lots of peripherals, disks, manuals, etc. Also have some newer Macs starting with a Mac Plus in an Apple carrying bag. I'm starting with you guys before trying to list elsewhere, although I may hit some of the dedicated FaceBorg pages (such as for Aquarius and Apple II.) I'm willing to ship some of the smaller items, but in general systems or monitors will need to be picked up here (near the Fort Washington exit of the PA Turnpike) or nearby, and cash or PayPal for payment. I may also consider trades for some of the video game stuff I'm looking for. It pains me to do this, but the clutter is getting out of hand, and I haven't touched most of these in years. It's time for someone else to enjoy. Bob Shuster

CDL is deploying fiber to replace the problematic Ethernet over Coax (MOCA) feeds to the Hotel and the "H" buildings We will be on site next Saturday (08/06/2022) installing the fiber on the 9059 end of the run to the hotel. Work will involve adding the fiber to the existing bundle (to Building 9032), and cutting out the old ty-wraps. Plenty of trips up and down the stepladders. If you in a position to assist, please email me directly to keep the noise down on the list! Martin Flynn

Thanks go out to Jason Perkins for scanning it and uploading it to the Internet Archive (how would we ever do our jobs without them?) https://archive.org/details/apple-memo-reset-vector We're really wondering if it was truly an internal only memo or if it was an internal memo that was copied and sent out to the dealers, though. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] New to group - Interested in Amiga

>> [NON-Text Body part not included] Hello Ryan, I am also in NoVA (Chantilly area.) Just got done re-capping an Amiga 4000T a few weeks ago with great success. Have done some repairs and have an Amiga collection. I tend to rotate between systems with Atari 8bit, Amiga, Atari ST currently being the forefront but have C64, Apple II, NeXT, SGI, Mac and others. There are a few of us :-) We could easily do a meetup. We have in the past. A few of us go to Phear the LAN (It's on meetup.com) There is a meeting the first Friday of each month for Phear, but we could also do a dedicated vintage computer one or Amiga one. I don't think I will be able to make Phear the LAN next month due to a gathering of laser show hobbyists and pros up in Delaware, but could do something else and maybe get a few other locals to hang out. I need to clean up my place a little bit and could host it. Current projects on my desk: Japenese Sega Saturn laser replacement, Sharp Twin Famicom disk drive belt replacement, Roland Juno 106 synth recalibration (replaced the voice modules and wave modules), and repairing an LED video wall. Amiga parts I need: Amiga 3000 front face and floppy, Amiga 1200 floppy, keyboard and metal shields. - Ethan

It Takes a Federation - Redux
by Adam Michlin 20 Jul '22

20 Jul '22

Hi Everyone, We've been remiss in announcing a new initiative of National VCF which aims to better deal with the increasing number of rescues that are coming to us at <info(a)vcfed.org>. A national subcommittee was formed consisting of several museums and a few members at large. This subcommittee is run by myself and Ryan Schiff of the System Source Museum in Maryland. Members include: LSSM - New Kensington, PA System Source Museum - Hunt Valley, MD VCF MA - Wall, NJ San Antonio Museum Science and Technology - San Antonio, TX Homecomputermuseum - NK Helmond, Netherlands Save the Machine Technology - North Carolina The logic is there are more and more circumstances where machines need to be rescued and no one organization is able to handle all of them. So, what happens is we get the email, Ryan and myself make a quick decision as to who to direct the donation to (which is often necessary as time constraints can be a very serious issue), and then we report to the committee (who hold us accountable). In the case of a serious debate about where things should go, we bring the decision to the committee for a vote (if time permits). Why two people? In case of any conflict of interests. To give you an example, a few months ago we got an email from someone who's father had passed away and the machines (from small to very large) had to be out within two weeks. The decision was made to have System Source make the pickup, they picked up the machines, and the machines were divided between System Source, VCF MA and LSSM. Particularly exciting is that System Source picked up an Altair 8800, dropped it off in the VCF MA warehouse at VCF East, where it safely sat until VCF MA delivered the machine to LSSM just this last weekend. Next time you're at LSSM, you'll know it took three museums to safely deliver that Altair for you to use. We also are working very hard towards sharing exhibits and artifacts and are pleased to announce the modem exhibit featured previously at the VCF MA Museum is currently being set up at LSSM. It is absolutely thrilling to be involved with the ever growing wave of collaboration in the vintage computer world! But, however, public service notice. Please please please, make and document arrangements for your collections in the event of an untimely demise. Best wishes, -Adam

Anyone want my poor ImageWriter II for parts?
by Dan FitzGerald 20 Jul '22

20 Jul '22

I have an early model ImageWriter II that was working until I plugged the wrong cable into it before VCF East and blew out an IC on its logic board. Well, I am not used to desoldering ICs, so I'm pretty sure I damaged the logic board in the process. And ended up shredding the stupid foam under the lid. And broke a tab off the lid, which I carefully epoxied back together. This _was_ a nice printer, complete with manual, and with minimal investment and time it _could_ be a nice printer once again. I just don't want to do it as I now have an ImageWriter I that is suiting my needs just fine. If anybody wants it, I can bring it to this month's repair workshop and it can be yours for the nominal price of free! Yet another TRS-80 question
by Bob Shuster 17 Jul '22

17 Jul '22

After replacing the blown cap on the floppy power supply in my Model 4, it works great! It has a pair of 40-track DS/DD drives in the lower bay, and the upper bay is empty. (As an aside, and I don’t *think* this is relevant, the previous owner had passed a cable from the floppy connector on the bottom of the case back up inside the case to reach the upper drive bay, but it is not connected.) I connected my two external Mini Disks (26-1164 and 26-1164A) and while they seem like they are working, once connected I can’t read them *or* the internal drive 1. Disconnect them and drive 1 works perfectly. Also seems like the drive on the end of the chain (which should be drive 3 I believe?) is spinning when I access drive 0. Is this simply a cabling issue? It’s been a very long time since I used a TRS-80, and even then it was a Model I - I never had a Model 4. What am I missing? Are there jumpers that need to be set inside the drives perhaps? Any help would be most appreciated! - Bob Shuster

Fwd: Help with vintage Ampex computer / terminal ?? (David K)
by David K 15 Jul '22

15 Jul '22

Thanks to all for the help with the Ampex video terminal. Definitely now what I thought when I bought it. In terms of nothing appearing on the screen when I turn it on, Herb mentioned playing with the contrast. I did try that and still got nothing. So I really do think it is effectively dead. So this is well above my paygrade in terms of being able to use this in any meaningful way. If anyone on the list is interested in it let me know. Looking for $20 - local pickup in Reading PA (19608) though I sometimes travel. David K.

Fwd: Help with vintage Ampex computer / terminal ??
by Herbert Johnson 14 Jul '22

14 Jul '22

I concur with Dave McGuire. It's a Z8002 control computer, with some healthy RAM and ROM, that runs some kind of studio video editing workstation, with its own display. What it can do by itself, is unclear. It's certainly *not*, some kind of general purpose computer that loads and runs text or numeric programs. recycledgoods.com, seems to have some ADO 1000 stuff, like that big video processor that Dave mentioned. Someone with technical Z8000 interest, would have to dump and disassemble the ROMS, and disassemble. And, dump that diskette - but my guess is, it's full of scripting files not "code". And they'd have to second-guess the floppy controller and the video controller, to have fun with the screen and floppy. Extra credit: communicate with five UARTs with FIFOs (character memories). And of course, figure out how to replace the keyboard (and whatever else is on that keyboard). Maybe some 1990's TV studio techs could provide some assistance or direction. So the guts of it, are late-80's chip-techie fun, for those of us who do that stuff. about "nothing appears on the screen". It may need to have a keyboard attached to finish its ROM bootup. Or maybe the brightness needs to be turned up. Or maybe there's video output on the video connector in the back. I'd say, enough Web research on Ampex video studio equipment from 1990 would find some information. Plenty of that stuff in trade-journals about TV studio production. And recyclers. I found all that, with "Ampex ADO 1000" web searching. Hey, one of my favorite Web sites is on this! https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?t=12256 Ampex ADO 1000 They are a little focused on the keyswitches .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rxuU_TaFiw Ampex ADO-1000 Digital Video Effects - promo, but there it is! Maybe it made its own promotional video? Funny. So it's likely a thing, for people who want to collect vintage video production equipment. There's actually a history of microcomputers in video production, all the way back through S-100. Cromemco (those Dazzler people) became a producer of video editing equipment in the 1990's. There's an Australian guy who was early in digital video editing, including some S-100 stuff. Thanks to David K for showing off his find, and Dean and Dave McGuire for further IDing this box. I have too many other things myself, to acquire this. Regards Herb -- Herbert R. Fwd: Help with vintage Ampex computer / terminal ??
by David K 13 Jul '22

13 Jul '22

I have been subscribed to the list for a few years. I rarely make posts. I really enjoy vintage computing but have little knowledge to offer. I recently purchased an Ampex computer/work station at a garage sale. I did not know exactly what I was buying and the seller was also unsure what it was (he got it from someone who was dumping it if I remember correctly). I am trying to understand what it is. There is no keyboard. There was one disk in the drive. When powered on, nothing appears on the screen though there is a humming noise which I'm almost certain is only the fan. The red light does not come on. I've tried inserting the disk and removing it once or twice and thought I heard the *very* faint sound of the drive but it never seems to fully power up or read the disk. The back of the "computer" has various in/outputs that I am not familiar with ("Chan A" "Concen" "SMPTE") The sticker on the back says it contains "multichannel software" version 9.4. I thought that might indicate it is some type of terminal that needs to be used with a mainframe?? I did some research but couldn't figure out what it is. Any information/help is appreciated. You can see pictures of this (including pics of it opened up) at https://imgur.com/a/WfHORyP Secondarily; if this ends up being something I can't make use of - if anyone is interested let me know. Help needed to put fiber optic on InfoAge campus on 7/16 at 10AM
by Jeffrey Brace 11 Jul '22

11 Jul '22

CDL will be putting up some fiber optic cable on 7/16 at 10AM. They would like some volunteers to help. If VCF has members that can help then it will take about 2 hours to finish. Anyone interested? If so, then send me a private reply. CDL will be deploying the first portion of the fiber optic cable between the main network rack in the Makerspace (Building 9059) and the furnace room in the Guard Shack (Building 9093) on Saturday, July 16th. This is to replace the Ethernet over coaxial cable system we deployed as a work around. Plan of the day is to route the fiber optic cable from the equipment in the makerspace, through the vault, and along the exterior of Building 9059, using the same hardware supporting the fiber to Building 9032. Help will be needed to go up and down ladders to route the fiber along the side of the building. The more help the better. Let's help support CDL, InfoAge and VCF. Update on TRS-80 Model 4 repair
by Bob Shuster 10 Jul '22

10 Jul '22

As requested, some final photos of the TRS-80 Model 4 post-surgery! She lives - no apparent ill effects from the exploding cap! Now I can finish going through the rest of the Tandy stuff and I’ll post soon. For reference this is a 128K Model 4, (gated array?), with dual half-height DS/DD floppies installed, not sure what else might be lurking in there! This was owned by Larry Lavins, who ran “The Claim Board” bbs (on this presumably!) and was president of PACS OS/2 group for some time. One of the photos shows some writing inside the floor of the case. Does anyone have any idea what that represents? I’m guessing the 6-27 is a date? Final inspection perhaps? https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1C_F28AXjqI8P7baLBs8Y5WPEwESNZMjl?us… <https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1C_F28AXjqI8P7baLBs8Y5WPEwESNZMjl?us…> - Bob Shuster > ------------------------------ > > Message: 2 > Date: Thu, 7 Jul 2022 15:42:45 -0400 > From: Bob Shuster <bob(a)theshusters.com> > To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> > Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Best source for capacitors > Message-ID: <F8DF7BA2-FDBC-4A93-B953-C80AA9C7ED74(a)theshusters.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 > > Just a follow-up. Museum Report 2022-07-07
by Jeffrey Brace 09 Jul '22

09 Jul '22

Rick, Doug, Bill I and I opened up the museum at 10 AM for a special tour group of 70 STEM students from STEM Academies of Chesterfield and Montgomery, NJ. We didn't know the exact ages and expected 10 to 14 year olds. To our surprise we were met with the first group who were ten 3 to 5 year olds. But we quickly adapted our tour to their age level. The groups were broken up into 10 students per group and ranged in age from 3 to 11 years old. There was a lot of adjusting on the fly in our tour and improvised based on the availability of time for each group. Some we had plenty of time, some came at unexpected times, some had little time. We had originally expected 30 minute tours. After lunch we had back to back tours that were spaced 5 to 7 minutes apart. Luckily we had 4 docents to handle them and to do 2 tours at the same time. Overall we learned a lot about adjusting to different age groups, adjusting the time for the tour and crowd control. We appreciated the chaperones keeping the children under control. We now have a better sense of how to adjust for different age groups, especially a new age group of under 5 which we never had in an organized group before. After the tours were finished at 2PM, the 4 of us discussed what went well, and not so well as well as to give each other updates on the museum and come up with suggestions for any changes or improvements. It's exciting to have such activity and collaboration amongst the docents! And to have lots of students coming through the InfoAge museums. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity https://vcfed.org/ <http://www.vcfed.org/> jeffrey(a)vcfed.org
