re: Sharpvision... Mmmm watching TV through a screen door. I remember when those first came out. There was this futuristic electronics store in Virginia Beach called F/X. You rode a people mover (flat treadmill thing like in airports) down a hall with a bunch of CRT TVs and stuff and landed at a floor with a lighting grid above overlooking the store. Ramps into the various sections. It was cool. They had the Sharpvision when it first came out. It was pretty amazing at the time. The F/X places went out of business, though Circuit City remained. F/X building became a massive flea market, then went unused and homeless people caused fire damage I think. Crazy times. I just remember that store had style and things like the Sharpvision. Just a follow-up. Thanks to Dave McGuire (thanks Dave!) Museum Report 2022-07-06
by Jeffrey Brace 07 Jul '22

07 Jul '22

Hello everyone, Very busy day at the museum. There was an organized tour of 60 broken up into groups of 10, plus another group of 14 mixed in. Rick Lewis, Bill Inderrieden and I started at 10AM and went to 2PM with a 30 minute lunch break. After 2PM there was the regular stream of visitors which Bill took care of and Rick and I left to go home. It was great working with them and it was nice to see how we each did tours differently. We learned from each other. We also discussed how to make our tours better, how to adjust for different interest levels on a tour. I feel that we did a great job today. This group ended up being a general interest group from a summer camp that was approximately 12 to 18 years old, with a mixed of interest levels. We felt we did a good job of teaching them and keeping it fun. The one question that stood out for me was how one kid asked me if we could run Fortnite on the Commodore 64. *facepalm* But there was also the kid who remarked how there was some people upset when the iMac came out and floppy drives were eliminated. Tomorrow 2022-07-07 will be another group of about 50. This is a special day where all the museums are open specifically for this tour group. Thursday the museums are normally closed. Rick, myself, and Doug will be there. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity https://vcfed.org/ <http://www.vcfed.org/> jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Could older Ethernet/ARCNet NICs be overclocked successfully?
by John Heritage 05 Jul '22

05 Jul '22

Really silly question but something I always wondered about... Back in the days of 386 and 486 I overclocked plenty of CPUs by just changing the oscillator.. I always wondered if that was also possible with network cards back in the day. I think old cards (such as LANtastic compatible cards) had a 20 MHz Oscillators to match their 10 mbps clock speeds. If you replaced this with a 25 MHz oscillator - is it possible it would have worked at the higher data speed? Is there something about the protocol or signalling that would have prevented it from working reliably, assuming the components had enough margin to handle the speed? (Note, I'm assuming you have two PCs connected, and overclock each PC's NIC to the same frequency. I'm also assuming a short enough cable can deal with higher frequencies. Also 16-bit ISA busses have ~ 64 mbps of bandwidth so I don't see a bottleneck there). Thanks! John

Museum Report 2022-07-02
by Jeffrey Brace 03 Jul '22

A good day at the museum despite a sunny day. People are still interested in seeing the museums during the busy shore season. Bart did his second time as docent this day and had about 22 visitors. He can fill in the details, but from my perspective at the front desk there was a good mixture of interests and ages coming through there. I stopped in before the museum opened to show Bart how to load some demos on the C64, C128, and other micros. Ian Litchfield also came to continue repairs on the Apple 2. He discovered some unsoldered pins in two different microchips and resoldered them. There continues to be problems and he continues to investigate the source of the problem. Bill Dromgoole continued working on repairs of the Univac 1219 and he can report on that. Rick Lewis stopped by to reload the PDP-8 demo programs from papertape. We have two demos now and are considering a third demo now that the docents are becoming more comfortable learning how to load programs from papertape. Perhaps the music playing program (plays through AM radio), or a text game, or a calculator program. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity https://vcfed.org/ <http://www.vcfed.org/> jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Museum Report 2022-06-29
by Jeffrey Brace 01 Jul '22

01 Jul '22

There haven't been regular reports about the museum on the discussion list for a while. Sometimes we had few visitors, sometimes we were busy and never got around to sending out a report. We have had visitors most days. I normally am docent on Sundays, but I work in a school. Schools are closed for summer vacation. So I was able to fill in this past Wednesday. Normally Wednesdays are very slow with few or no visitors. Now that it is summer time we get around 20 to 30. We had 25 visitors this past Wednesday. We had a bunch of organized tours in May and half of June and are going to have two more in a week. First two visitors from upstate New York did a self guided tour. They were reading and scanning the QR codes of the artifact display cards. They read the new display cards. It's nice to see that people notice them and are interested in them and use them. They spent about 50 minutes looking around and taking pictures. Two different boys and one mom printed out PrintShop pictures. This seems to be a fun thing for many kids to print out a picture. I even got some to try a line or two of BASIC. I tried out for the first time the Atari Mega STE MIDI setup. It has three songs on there now. Not sure how to get more on that system. Also not sure how to get BASIC running if we want. I have to get familiar with the operation of CuBase. It seemed to lock up after kids hit the wrong keys on the keyboard and I had to reset it each time. Not sure what is going on. There are a few machines that need repair. Maybe someone can take a look at them at the next repair workshop: I would like to get a copy of a Zenith boot disk that will run Microsoft BASIC. The current disk has errors and we were unable to copy it due to the B drive not seeming to work properly. We either need a copy of the disk or to get the B drive working. Apple // - Is being worked on by Ian Litchfield. IBM PCjr – Error H on boot. Ian has looked at this and fixed it. It is having problems again. Don’t know what was fixed and don’t know what is wrong. Sol 20 – Corey is the expert on this one. There was another one in the warehouse that we could try. This is the second one that we had working. Don’t know what is wrong with it. Heathkit H89 – It’s been a while, but I don't remember what is wrong with it. Mac Portable is glitchy. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it locks up. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity https://vcfed.org/ <http://www.vcfed.org/> jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Very rare functional (restored) hardcard - vintage 8-bit ISA harddrive card with slim 20mb harddrive. I had to crack through the glue holding the plastic case to get to the hard drive and fix the drive arm rest capstan, and de-stiction the platter axle. It has been working for a week or testing, lots of programs loaded onto the drive. Currently it's on day 1 of the auction, @ 99 cents. https://www.ebay.com/itm/275367307450 quick video and pictures. https://twitter.com/billdeg/status/1541621464188813312 Or...stop by the shop to claim it.

It Takes a Federation or The Tale of the Atari Mega STe
by Adam Michlin 27 Jun '22

27 Jun '22

Hi Everyone, We have a new exhibit in the Mid Atlantic Museum at InfoAge. Here's the back story. A few years ago, Bill Lange was kind enough to reorganize the Atari collection in the warehouse. He also provided plastic bins for most of the equipment, inspiring the ongoing project to protect as many artifacts as possible in plastic bins. During his work, he found a lonely and dirty Atari Mega STe that needed some love and care. Bill repaired the machine and we put it on display in the museum, but something was missing... You see, we are always looking for ways to demo machines and especially ways that involve something other than productivity software and games. We were reminded that the Atari ST was well known for its MIDI prowess, having MIDI built into the core of its architecture. A music demo, now that would be cool... Lessons were learned along the way. The Atari ST can use a color monitor or a higher resolution B&W monitor. Some programs work properly only with the higher resolution B&W monitor, particularly Cubase, which was to be the highlight of the demo. Luckily, we have both monitors, so that problem was solved. It was fun trying to figure out which USB floppy drives played nice with the 720K FAT (MS-DOS but old school MS-DOS) file system. Oh, and Cubase is *really* picky about what directory it is installed in. Thus the quest was on to get the machine doing MIDI. An external Yamaha MIDI box was donated. A period correct Tandy speaker system (thanks to Dean Notarnicola!) was borrowed. And a live music demo was all but ready. We just needed music, or so we thought. Frustratingly, this was not to be as the hard drive decided it didn't want to play nice anymore. Ugh! In swoops Pete Fletcher, though, who took the machine home, repaired it, and moved heaven and earth to get a solid state solution (good luck getting an Ultrasatan from Europe these days, but a different solid state solution was acquired). Just this morning, Pete delivered the Mega STe in perfect condition full of all sorts of goodies for demonstration and we have the first external MIDI demo in the history of the VCF MA Museum. Stop by to see and hear it yourself. Send us your favorite MIDI file and we can put it on the playlist. Thanks to Bill, Pete, and Dean. All three of you helped create something none of us could have done alone. It truly takes a Federation. -Adam

Right now it’s just open to this group - my contact info is intentionally missing from the webpages. If you can read this, you have my email. Email me with questions or offers! Please don't make offers on the list, but if you want to discuss my process and feel the group would benefit, then by all means knock yourself out! :) Bob Shuster (Slightly edited original message below) ---- Well, folks, I’ve gotten to the age where I need to seriously downsize my hobbies and collections, not wanting to leave it to my children to have to deal with in later years. (I had to do that recently for a relative.) On the electronics side, I’ve decided to concentrate on my vintage video game systems - and therefore sell off most of my vintage computer stuff. My collection includes mostly 8-bit stuff: TRS-80 Models I, IV, M100, etc. - Atari 400, 800, Stacy, Portfolio, ST, etc. - C64/VIC20 - T/S1000 (including an unbuilt kit), Apple II, II+, IIe, IIe Platinum, IIgs - Wang WLTC - Mattel Aquarius - TI-99/4A - many others that I still have to dig out - plus lots of peripherals, disks, manuals, etc. Also have some newer Macs starting with a Mac Plus in an Apple carrying bag. I’m starting with you guys before trying to list elsewhere, although I may hit some of the dedicated FaceBorg pages (such as for Aquarius and Apple II.) I'm willing to ship some of the smaller items, but in general systems or monitors will need to be picked up here (near the Fort Washington exit of the PA Turnpike) or nearby, and cash or PayPal for payment. I may also consider trades for some of the video game stuff I’m looking for. It pains me to do this, but the clutter is getting out of hand, and I haven’t touched most of these in years. It’s time for someone else to enjoy. Bob Shuster

Museum and Warehouse report
by Adam Michlin 23 Jun '22

23 Jun '22

Hi Everyone, As discussed and approved, I took the PowerPC OS/2 machine and will get that to Connor. Either he'll fix it at the workshop or he will take it home, fix it, and bring it back to the July workshop. I'll communicate here either way. I'm bringing three recently donated 486 class machines to the System Source Workshop. One is for my project of building a DesqView machine (which may never become an exhibit - just a fun project for me). Hopefully either Dean or Alex (or both) can take one or both of the other machines on for the Linux 1992 exhibit. I'm a bit confused by the changes in the museum, I initially thought the Pong machine was missing, but realized it is now hidden. I'm concerned that this might upset one of our most important volunteers and one of the owners of the machine, Bill Lange, and I don't quite understand why it was done without discussion. Can someone enlighten me? Hopefully before Bill sees it. At the very least, I hope we can communicate with him before he visits again. The Zenith machine is pinch hitting for the Mega STe for now (as I found it) and I dropped off a period correct speaker box for the Mega STe on loan from Dean so when the Mega STe returns (any day now, I understand) we will have sound for the MIDI demo. I trust we won't need a vote to put the Mega STe back in, but let me know if we need to do so. The former Zenith table is empty, which is a perfect opportunity to put in the Micro VAX (Hi Dave!). VMS lives! As I found things, the Data General was moved over near the Wang, which makes sense to me, but just so everyone knows. The 1992 exhibit was moved under the Atari (regular) ST and VIC-20, which confuses me. The mouse exhibit was moved where the Pong machine used to be, which I'm ambivalent about. The featured exhibit quite possibly will become the Franklin Red Lightning prototype Tony is going to donate. I suggest we hold off until next week on any motions so we can see if the OS/2 PowerPC box is going to be resurrected this weekend. The warehouse is basically as it was after East although I did grab a piece of the UNIVAC that was accidentally left by System Source. Dave and I are on the look out for a PDP-11 clone in a nondescript carrying case, so if anyone sees such a thing, let us know. Best wishes, -Adam

Need help with audio processing from VCF West 6 (2003)
by Jeffrey Brace 22 Jun '22

22 Jun '22

Kay Savetz was able to successfully recover most of the talks from VCF 6 2003 with the help of Clay Cowgill. There are still some talks that are troublesome, so we are looking someone who is an expert at magically transforming audio issues. The issue as described to me is as follows: The audio is in WAV format, recorded poorly. Needs filtering, EQ, and magic. Audio levels range from normal to extremely low. Some of the audio levels seem to fade in and out even within the same sentence. Noise includes a 60hZ hum, and sometimes buzzy static — sometimes the static is significantly louder than the voice. Speaker sometimes too far away from the microphone. In summary, the audio ranges from “not bad, but I wish that buzzing would go away” to “what? what did they say?” If you know of someone that can help, then please let me know. Thanks! ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity https://vcfed.org/ <http://www.vcfed.org/> jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

VCF East 2022 Videos coming soon
by Jeffrey Brace 22 Jun '22

22 Jun '22

Just keeping everyone updated. It's taking me longer than expected to review all the videos from the show. Ethan O'Toole and crew did a great job of recording it and Kay Savetz has done a great job editing and processing all of them. Life, work and other VCF activities have delayed for me. I'm reviewing the last video, then I will be making an intro that will be appended to each video. Something like 15 seconds long. I hope to have the videos released on YouTube by Independence Day. Take care everyone! ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity https://vcfed.org/ <http://www.vcfed.org/> jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Old "beige boxes" free to a good home
by William Dudley 20 Jun '22

20 Jun '22

They're not all beige, but most of them are. These are "too new" for the museum, but I figure some of you are fixing up 1990's boxes so you can demo Windows 3.0 or Desqview or Linux installed from floppies. These are mostly early Pentium boxes (one Athlon). Some are empty cases, most have motherboards. Most have no hard disk. The item numbers match the numbers on the units in the photo. I'm happy to supply better photos or more information. Floppy drives are 3.5" except box 10 which has a 5" floppy. All the units are in Jackson, NJ. Shipping OK at your cost, or I can deliver to central NJ. Take one, take all, the rest will be scrapped, as much as I hate to see things go to landfill. Note that No. 11 has monochrome video and includes an amber monochrome monitor. It was my home router for many years, hence the 3 Ethernet cards. It used to boot Linux Router Project off the floppy. It runs the BIOS code successfully, but it won't boot because the cmos battery is flat. (NIC == ethernet) I don't want to start breaking these units and sending people things like floppy drives; If you want a floppy, take the whole box and deal with the rest of it. (That is my position at present.) 1. mini tower: 1 GHz cpu, 2 HD, floppy, CDRW, NIC, sound, video 2. mid tower w/DVDRW, otherwise EMPTY. Transparent side panel, built in handle on the top; apparently for the "gamer" market. 3. mid tower Pentium II, NIC, sound, video. Has HD in a removable carrier, plus a second empty carrier. (I need to find one of those stupid little barrel keys so I can unlock the carrier that has a drive in it.) 4. Dell mid tower: silver front, Celeron, no RAM, has DVDRW, HD, Vista license sticker 5. "Athlon 64 3000+" 2GB RAM 3" floppy SCSI CDROM mid tower 6. Acer "1120SX", but replaced original mother board with 386 motherboard (no HD/CD) floppy, NIC, video; small desktop form factor 7. Packard Bell pizza box: 200M Pentium CDR floppy 850M HD 8. Compaq mid tower: Pentium RAM floppy video 9. "Comtrade" mid tower: AMD K6 233 sound, NIC, Tseng video, 192k RAM ASUS MB (if the post-it note is to be believed). 10. Gateway 2000 tower: DVDRW 5" floppy, otherwise EMPTY 11. "IMAGE" desktop: 386 3 NICs, 3 1/2" floppy, monochrome video card, w/ amber monitor Bill Dudley Jackson, NJ

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] passing of MIDI developer

Hello all, I dedicated this episode of my Youtube channel to Dave’s memory:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo-mPpnD0K0&list=PLOW4_Hp8_912j1Tzu-… <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo-mPpnD0K0&list=PLOW4_Hp8_912j1Tzu-zN40mpz…> Feel free to share the playlist with anyone you think may be interested in the content. I make it primarily for myself, to get ideas out of my head and practice video editing skills. The global chip shortage has made it difficult for retro hardware makers to source working programmable sound generator chips such as the AY series, and continue supplying modern versions of legacy hardware. Modern replacements often do not give 100% functional compatibility with features of the older chips, which were exploited in interesting ways by developers to achieve desired effects. Thanks, Eric

passing of MIDI developer
by Herb Johnson 17 Jun '22

17 Jun '22

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/08/arts/music/dave-smith-dead.html Tonight I had a taste for some MIDI music. In searching the Web for it, I came across this obituary of Dave Smith, who passed a week ago. Known as a synthesizer designer of the late 70's, turns out he collaborated with Roland to create the MIDI specification. This is a little out of my interests; but MIDI is really familiar to anyone who did personal computing and digital audio instruments in the 80's. Maybe arcade games too, that's how they sounded. MIDI is both a simple cabling and serial interface to connect digital audio instruments to a computer; and a specification for codes to represent instruments, tones and duration. Something between sheet music and a piano roll. The instrument renditions are pretty simple: square and triangular waveforms with envelopes. Not a hard program to write in 8-bit assembler, a simple D/A, even a 1-bit R/C network. It's incredibly data-compact to represent a song by notes and instruments. That mattered with 70's and 80's computers and later with consumer electronic piano keyboards, drumsets, etc. But to this day, a Web browser and most audio playback programs can play a MIDI file. So I thought I'd give a shout-out as I'm listening to a MIDI theme from Duke Nukem. MIDI piano works pretty well too, there's lots of piano-roll to MIDI out there. So a Scott Joplin tune from 1902, realized in MIDI, sounds alright. Or Gershwin! 89K bytes: https://www.midis101.com/free_midi/68230/Gershwin__Medley_From_An_American_… regards, Herb -- Herbert R. Help identifying Model 100 expansion board
by Bob Shuster 11 Jun '22

I hope there’s a few TRS-80 Model 100 aficionados in the group! I’m in process of going through my Model 100 collection items, and came across a small circuit board. I’m not sure if it’s a RAM or ROM expansion. It’s labeled “PG Design” with “Model No. 000132” on a sticker plus “HE-3-V0” etched on the circuit board. Photos in the shared directory below. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? If there’s an online reference to it I’d sure love to take a look, but I couldn’t find anything! - Bob Shuster https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nSbR93IsIOkn5beRZZlhVSjqoKQyu6rE?us… <https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nSbR93IsIOkn5beRZZlhVSjqoKQyu6rE?us…>
