More TRS-80 Model 102 stuff
by Gregg Levine 15 Feb '26

15 Feb '26

Hello! Having now confirmed the existence of both a 6264 which I'd installed in the thing, and a 62128 and a 62256; this becomes one of are both of them the same pinouts of the 6264? I believe not, but over years I've seen some darned strange things surface regarding EPROM designs. ---- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature was once found posting rude messages in English in the Moscow subway."

TRS-80 Model 102 stuff
by Gregg Levine 14 Feb '26

14 Feb '26

Hello! Okay yesterday I was indeed able to work out how to move files between this laptop and the TRS-80 Model 102 I own. It involved DOSbox and a serial cable who used the FTDI chipset and a nullmodem connector. DOSbox was setup to be a slow 80386DX. And running the unique software that the company commissioned I was able to basically do that. Ironically the disk drives the thing uses, and I do not have here were the same ones that Brother optioned for their knitting machines. The unit uses for memory a 6264 chip which I know is a static RAM chip organized the same as the EPROM 2764. I stuck one of mine in, and it seems to have found it. But has anyone ever seen a 62128 (Static RAM same as a EPROM 27128), or a 62256 (Static RAM same as a EPROM 27256) someplace? ---- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature was once found posting rude messages in English in the Moscow subway."

What would have used 64kB Simms?
by John Heritage 14 Feb '26

14 Feb '26

I'm going through some old stuff I have, and came across some 64 kilobyte and 256 kilobyte simms. The earliest Simms I really remember using were 1MB for 386/486 computers though I could see 386s using the 256kb. Earlier than that I've touched a few 286s with sipp and simm slots, but even they were typically aiming for "the full 640KB". But most XT/286 products I touched had individual ram chips socketed or soldered on board. What devices would have used 64KB Simms back in the day? There are 9 chip as well, so I assume parity.

OT: 50 Insane New Jersey Facts That Sound Fake But Are 100% True
by Herbert Johnson 13 Feb '26

13 Feb '26

Jeff Brace, sharing the link was appreciated, thanks, it was well intended. But I'm afraid you've been fooled by AI generated content to grab eyeballs. Inspection of the poster's video collection shows this - go immediately to their list of videos. Every few days in a MONTH, they posted the same subject (fifty facts) about a total of 21 US states. That and two videos about town-factoids. Only AI could produce that much content in a month. I don't even care about validating the facts or not. But the fastest way to make that determination, is to stop the video, click on "closed captioning", and click on "transcripts". - I can read text faster than I can watch and listen, no ads too. a momentary glance thru the NJ transcript, suggested some errors, confusing "the tri state" with New Jersey specifics. If I want to search the Web about New Jersey for purpose, I'll do so and have done so. There are any number of researched, referenced and maintained Web sites about features of New Jersey. Why do I care about Web site or video-content quality? I work hard to produce content on my Web site. Of course I consume Web content. I read this email list, among other reasons, for quality content. Degraded content lowers the bar and reduces expectations and distorts one's knowledge - just like eating excess candy changes your food patterns and is ultimately unhealthy (but profitable for candy producers). Also - when AI's "scrape" my content, their posted version of my content robs *my site* of "eyeballs". I'm saying: I have skin in this game. So this YouTube site is not a reliable site for New Jersey factoids, or any factoids. It's a vehicle for ads (revenue to the video producer) and eyeball-bait (increased value for ads). Sharing such video sources (sorry) propagates the AI-generated-media virus, as I've described. I've posted my considerations and process, so others can use the same process to evaluate the flood of AI-generated semi-factual content we are now subjected to. People can consider (and disagree about) my considerations but let's be clear-eyed about what's behind whatever "media" we consume. The old saw: "if you aren't paying for the product, YOU are the product". Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Good point Herb Johnson, I watched it and although I found some interest, I could tell that it was an AI product with clickbait. Bob Johansen

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] ENIAC 80 celebration live! this Sunday (Feb. 15)

11 Feb '26

I'm driving to the 80th Anniversary Celebration of ENIAC (at the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester) from Philadelphia. There is one passenger seat available in my car and I'd be happy to transport one person. I'm departing this Sunday at 11:00am to arrive about an hour early to check out the vintage helicopters. Contact me off-list if you need a ride from Philly. -bernieS >Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2026 09:15:50 -0500 >From: Jeffrey Brace <jeffrey(a)vcfed.org> >To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> >Subject: [vcf-midatlantic] ENIAC 80 celebration live! this Sunday (Feb. 15) > >I'm driving to this event. Hi Steve, you're absolutely right on this - and after several conversations I'm going to be careful not to push into the consignment space at all, but for things like the swap fests or OOB conversations, maybe it'll be useful. I"m going to work with the Discord admin to hook Claimit up to discord, and we'll give it a try! In a vacuum, I absolutely love it, but "stepping on consignment" is a real concern as commission paid on sales is a not insignificant source of operating revenue for the Fest. I understand that attendees trade on the side/sly, friend to friend, and I'll admit I've made a parking lot sale or three over the years. Deals between friends is fine and normal and cool and will always happen, but a publicly available organized system that effectively encourages the diversion of income from the Fest at scale seems like a capital-B, capital-I, Bad Idea. -Steve On Wed, Feb 11, 2026 at 7:01 AM <vcf-midatlantic-request(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > From: Benjamin Krein <superbenk(a)gmail.com> > To: shevett(a)pobox.com, vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> > Cc: Dave Shevett <dbelfershevett(a)gmail.com> > Bcc: > Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2026 07:27:54 -0500 > Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] An idea for trading gear at VCF East (and > perhaps wider). > I love the idea. An idea for trading gear at VCF East (and perhaps wider).
by Dave Shevett 10 Feb '26

10 Feb '26

Hey everyone. I was chatting a bit about this on the VCF Discord '#for-sale' channel, and got some good feedback / interest, so I'd like to toss it out here and see if we want to raise up the visibility a bit. I wrote an application called ClaimIt. It's designed for communities that tend to have focused interests, and are more interested in sharing and supporting the community than making a quick buck. The idea is to have a place to search, browse, and, well, CLAIM items that people are giving away or selling. The most important aspect is that you can SEE if someone has claimed an item or not (so this prevents the 'Is this still available???' responses), and if so, you can put yourself down as an alternate, so the seller can say "Well, bob claimed this, but he flaked, so dave, it's yours." https://claimit.stonekeep.com/ There's a VCF community there already (I only have one item there), but in the lead up for VCF East, is this something we'd like to encourage people to use? Now, one of the things I've been avoiding is making it 'yet another site i have to go look at' - to that end, it can email you when things are listed in a community, and will email you when someone claims one of your items. In addition, there's hooks to update Slack (and shortly, Discord) when an item is put up for claim. I didn't want to put this on the VCF Discord without discussing it with people first. The entire app is opensource, with an issue tracker and other information. https://github.com/shevett/claimit-stonekeep/ Is this something the VCF community would be interested in setting up? I don't want to step on the consignment folks' toes, but this may be very handy in the "I'm coming to VCF, I have these 10 items I'd like to sell / consign. If you're interested, claim them here, and we'll hook up at the show." Thanks, happy to hear feedback - people are also encouraged to list / test / post thins on the VCF community there to test or get a feel for it. The Discord hook is NOT active right now, so if you post something and want to see it on discord, just post the link and discord will auto-expand it (like this: https://claimit.stonekeep.com/?page=item&id=20260107161930-5e71 ) -dave (one of the many).

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Bellmac 32 processor
by Jeffrey Jonas 02 Feb '26

02 Feb '26

I forgot if I posted this before. I found it under email "drafts". The Bellmac32 processor was probably the last processor by AT&T/Western Electric/Bell Labs, following the adventures of the Bellmac-8, Hobbit, Crisp and other processors. It was used in the 3b2 series of minicomputers, a single-board computer, VME card and the AT&T/Teletype 5620 graphics terminal. I chronicled some of it here: http://ferretronix.com/tech/3b2/index.html Wikipedia seems correct with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blit_(computer_terminal) The Blit programmable bitmap graphics terminal was designed by Rob Pike and Bart Locanthi Jr. of Bell Labs in 1982. The Blit technology was commercialized by AT&T and Teletype. In 1984, the DMD (dot-mapped display) 5620 was released, followed by models 630 MTG (multi-tasking graphics) in 1987 and 730 MTG in 1989. The 5620 used a Western Electric 32100 processor (aka Bellmac 32) and had a 15" green phosphor display with 800 x 1024 x 1 resolution (66 x 88 characters in the initial text mode) interlaced at 30 Hz. The 630 and 730 had Motorola 68000 processors and a 1024 x 1024 x 1 monochrome display at 60 Hz (most had amber displays, but some had white or green displays).

MARCH Workshop Cancellation Notice
by Jeff Salzman 02 Feb '26

02 Feb '26

We’re sorry to inform you that the MARCH Repair Workshop planned for February 7–8, 2026 at the InfoAge campus is being canceled. Even though the big snowfall that hit the area was more than a week ago, the persistent freezing temperatures have kept a surprising amount of snow and ice in place... especially in the areas needed for safe public access to the Workshop space. Since InfoAge relies on volunteer staff, and this particular accumulation has been unusually tough to clear, there’s still too much snow and ice covering the areas and paths needed for parking and pedestrian access to the Workshop room. As a result, we’re making the call to cancel the Workshop as a safety precaution. The good news is that we fully expect everything to be cleared or naturally melted well before the next scheduled Workshop on March 21–22, 2026. Thanks for your understanding, and apologies to those who had already signed up. We look forward to seeing you in March. Jeff Salzman VCF/MARCH Workshop Manager VCF Steering Committee

Nope we went with the 8DIP. But those are near unobtainium so we're working on different ways to create the same idea. I found some different 16 pin chips but have yet to build a circuit to try it out. I don't think any of the reproduction boards have been using the tin cans unless that's all they could get. I've not seen any (which doesn't mean much). The OP posted prototype from when Woz was fist building the Apple I. That would be a unique computer to have. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies KD2ZRQ

DOS Gaming titles available
by Herbert Johnson 24 Jan '26

24 Jan '26

Laura Kid asks: Are they all Windows? What are requirements? Laura, I don't know the seller or what they have. But looking at the titles as dated from 1990 to 1997, some versions of say Paint Shop PRo 7 and so on? Seems to me these are Windows 98 Windows XP era, maybe some MS-DOS games stuff too. Some of the software might need product numbers to enable them but the non-office gaming stuff may only need to run from the original CD. Sounds like a stack of CD's. Recent 64-bit Windows might choke on some of these but I've run things like Paint Shop Pro 9 under Win 10. Or run on an older Windows OS just for their use. But I don't see anything that needs networking/browsing to work, at-a-glance, so an old PC's networking won't be needed. No promises from me. As Degnan's listing says, contact Bill to connect to the seller. My guess is these would fit a flat-rate Priority Mail box if the seller wants to ship. Regards Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. I bought a DB25 switch off ebay from a guy in Rochelle Park. Turns out the seller's late father was an electrical engineer and there are "boxes and boxes" of electrical stuff in the house that he has no idea what it is. He put out a few things on ebay, but that is probably 1% of what there is. Here is the description of a few things. Mini-Circuits Attenuator Dynage Power supply TE connectivity 2-221128-1 Pomona BNC to test leads connector Email me off board if you recognize anything and have any interest in it and I'll give you his contact info and he can send you some pictures of whatever else there is. (he is open to getting rid of it in one big lot) There was not any kind of vintage computer stuff except for dual use cables. OT: Why New Jersey Has No Major City
by Herbert Johnson 10 Jan '26

10 Jan '26

I've lived near Trenton for decades but was not born in NJ. So I see the state as an outsider. I appreciated the video. The second half of the video was about "boroughitis", that I figured out by experience, I didn't realize it was driven by policy. But the first half about the (pre)colonial history was new to me and very informative, made sense. I knew previously, that Ben Franklin referred to New Jersey as "a barrel with two corks at either end", being opposite Phila and NYC. And I also knew before, the geography, more than in the video. The state is split north-south by "hills" and rocky lands north, clay and sand and forest soils to the south. I know in particular, the economic value of the southern farms, clays for pottery, sand for glass - a lot of economic value a century or two ago. Trenton was a world pottery center, from vases down to sinks and toilets. Also pine for construction. Even the Pinelands had "bog iron", washed down from the north into the clays. Not in the video, is the fact that ridges run across the north half of the state, from southwest to northeast. They are the ancient foothills and worn-down Appalachian Mountains (mined for coal and iron, other minerals). Rivers and roads run in those directions. They are physical obstacles to north-south commerce, until powered vehicles and asphalt highways were created, except for the Delaware. The Delaware River cuts through these ridges, from northwest to south east in the north half, as the video called out. In the south half, the Delaware bends to the southwest. Roads in either half follow in parallel, or perpendicular-to, the river. Thus there's no "cardinal directions" in the the state - you can't drive "north", you drive roughly parallel or perpendicular to the Delaware. Thus a compass is useless for travel in most of New Jersey. The video called out greater Newark as a single sprawling metropolitan area of millions, bigger than Chicago - that was a surprise. regards Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. OT: Why New Jersey Has No Major City

*"If you go by pop culture alone, you might think the entire state of New Jersey is just one long turnpike exit—a grey, industrial corridor connecting New York City to... well, anywhere else. It’s the butt of every joke about the state. But if you actually look at the map, and I mean really look at the physical reality of the land, you’ll realize that New Jersey isn’t just a paved-over parking lot. It is actually a geographic marvel that, by all rights, shouldn't exist as a single political entity."* This video talks about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzohouMgODo&t=36s Enjoy! For those arriving at InfoAge for the MARCH Workshop event this weekend, you can open the door to the 9010-D building simply by pulling on the door handle. Even though the door has a code lock, the door is not locked. It's just closed for climate control inside. Jeff Salzman

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Site-wide wireless for VCF East?
by Neil Cherry 10 Jan '26

I think this is getting way off track and posting blame isn't going to change the network. I take exception with the understanding of what it takes to build a network. I've built very large networks (Corp 50 type networks). I haven't built exhibition networks. Those are two different things. This network is not designed to handle an expo center network, especially on a campus env. Remember this network was built with volunteers and a lot (if not all) was donated. Not a cheap thing, expecially with 10G fiber between the building. If someone wished to cough up the dollars and volunteers to build an expo network, please step up. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies KD2ZRQ

Forgive any brashness here, but “taking away” the network due to complaints of it being over loaded seems excessive and unwarranted. There are ways to implement network segregation, quotas, QoS, etc. and setup temporary networks for exhibitors or attendees. That being said, shame on those that vindicated IA, which provided a free service and experienced a moment of congestion. Of course 1500 people all going through one pipe is going to be slow. If you go to any major event there are quality and service disruptions.. -Ian L. It's unfortunate that VCFed can't find a way to provide this for the attendees at the show, even if it's not provided by infoage. There are good options for Wireless and Satellite network uplinks, so you're not even limited to what connectivity the site has to it. Actually, considering that IA is a non profit more or less educational entity, it should look at joining Eduroam... Even hospitals and museums have joined into that. Site-wide wireless for VCF East?
by Dan FitzGerald 09 Jan '26

09 Jan '26

I am designing my exhibit for VCF East, and would like to know if we are going to have site-wide public wifi for the event. Whether we do or not will affect what kinds of things I do with my exibit; specifically, if I am going to allow for attendees for remote access to my personal mainframe system, and whether or not I will attempt any cross-site demos of the OfficeVision/VM (PROFS) mail program. Do you think that this will be possible? -- Regards, Dan FitzGerald Classical Computing Laboratory at IBM Poughkeepse http://www.vm.ibm.com/devpages/DFITZGER Danbury-Area Retrocomputing Enthusiasts (D.A.R.E.) I know this is off topic, but I know there's a lot of people here who might be interested. Tomorrow morning there's a vintage electronics auction being held in Jackson. It might be an opportunity to pick something up to play with at the workshop. https://share.google/Lew1ckOcU9Bck8lJ6 Regards, Joe Giliberti
