HA, fun! The one sound I wish I could hear on a regular basis, that isn't exactly in the category of your video, is the sound of an original IBM PC (10MB) hard drive pinging away. The computer lab in college had a couple of those, and I would hear it coming from the next room while I did my assignments on the Apple IIe (only the advanced students got to use the IBMs). I am sad that the memory of that sound is fading from my mind. If anyone wants to use this great text, please feel free: "Ever wonder about the roots of today’s technological society? Did you spend Covid nostalgically playing old video games from the past on an emulator? Do you want to get hands-on with computers ranging from the 1960’s thru the early 1990’s? Come to the Vintage Computer Festival East in Wall, NJ on April 22nd thru April 24th, 2022. On Friday, April 22nd, there are classes in everything from programming the Apple II computer to "learn to solder” sessions for both kids and adults. You can even solder together your own Intel based computer with our partner GlitchWorks. On Saturday and Sunday (April 23rd & 24th), join us for hands-on exhibits of vintage and classic computers along with talks from the people who were at the beginning of vintage computer history. Learn how vintage computers lead to today’s world of technology becoming commonplace instead of niche hobby. This year we have two themes for our weekend talks: Women in computing and Computers for the Masses. Talks include a reunion of Commodore employees talking about their days working at Commodore Computers as well as the creators of the Commodore Vic-20 and C64. Talks by Margaret Morabito, the editor of RUN magazine. Learn the history of video game programming starting with the Atari 2600 to modern times with Burger Becky a long-time veteran of the video game industry. Consignment sales will be open all weekend where our members will be selling everything from vintage Apple to Zenith computers and everything in between, as well as parts for computers, peripherals, and other vintage computer equipment. Who knows you may find the items to complete your nostalgic journey back to the 1980’s. Will you find the personal and home computer that you have been looking for? Looking for time on working PDP-11 (or other DECs minicomputers)?
by Michael Casadevall 15 Mar '22

15 Mar '22

Hey all, I'm curious if anyone knows if there are museums on the east coast (and ideally close to New Jersey) that have working PDP machines, and may allow some time working with them. I've been wanting to do a video on some of the PDP series machines, and especially some of the other operating systems beside UNIX such as RT-11. I know it's possible to emulate most of these in SIMH, but I'd prefer to at least be able to show the real hardware in action. Ideally, I'm looking for time on a PDP-11, and a PDP-8, but I'd mostly like to capture these minicomputers running for real, including loading tape, and more if possible. Figure this was the best place to ask on potential leads. For those who don't know me, I'm NCommander at YouTube, and I've been at the last few VCF events. Hope someone can point me in the right direction, ~ NCommander

Any MIDI enthusiasts around?
by RETRO Innovations 14 Mar '22

14 Mar '22

I am looking to control some RGBW leds (maybe SPI-based strips, maybe individual high power RGBW LEDs, not sure yet) with some of my classic computers. That's pretty easy, no concerns there. Lots of arduino projects or I can just add in a 6522/6821/etc. But, I thought, instead of just making a hobby project, I should try to design something that would work with classic systems *AND* current gear, and not be so platform dependent. MIDI came to mind, both because the cost to interface is pretty low, cables are cheap, and MIDI is very well supported. Where I am struggling is getting a handle on how to map the ability to set an individual LED color in a strip of say 20 or 60 to the MIDI protocol without just punting and using SysEx msgs. And, I might have a bunch of these strips (more than 16 perhaps, though my initial project only needs 10-12. I am also aware of DMX lighting and MIDI->DMX converters. DMX XLR-5 cabling is a bit pricier than MIDI 5 pin DIN (though the RS485 protocol seems simple enough), so I thought maybe I should just emulate a MIDI->DMX->LEDs in my design. Anyone familiar with MIDI-controlled lighting and how it's mapped to MIDI messages? Jim -- RETRO Innovations, Contemporary Gear for Classic Systems www.go4retro.com store.go4retro.com

Docent volunteers needed in VCF museum
by Jeffrey Brace 07 Mar '22

07 Mar '22

Hello everyone, Docenting is a great way to support VCF and learn about artifacts. We have an ongoing need to have docents in our museum Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12PM to 5PM. Right now we have Bill Inderrieden every Wednesday, Deborah every Saturday and me every Sunday. We need more docents in the mix to give us days off or to other VCF related activities. Also in the summer Deborah will be going to an internship, so we will need a replacement on Saturdays. If you are coming from far, we will allow you to stay in the dorm overnight at VCF's expense. We would just need sufficient advanced notice. There are many things that can be done while waiting for visitors like on a project or even help improve the artifacts with great demos or specific projects. You don't need to do it every week. You could do it once a month, once every two months, whatever. The important thing is to have more docents in the rotation so that the regular docents can have a day off to do VCF things or personal things. We will schedule you in. If you are interested in volunteering, then please contact me. If you have any questions, then let me know and I would be happy to answer them. Thanks so much! ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Hello everyone, I appreciate all the feedback, comments, and thoughts. Whether they are positive, negative or neutral they are all appreciated and heard. There are undoubtedly others who feel the same way as all of you with various thoughts and opinions. This is the third time that we have run a swap meet and each time we learn from the experience. This was also the first indoor one, so lots of growing pains. We started out not knowing how to do a swap meet but having general event planning. Somethings worked well, some not so well. Each time we learned from our mistakes and made things better the next time. I will be taking all of what was discussed here when I plan the next swap meet for October 8, 2022. Thanks so much everyone! 16 station MidiMaze Atari FPS @ VCF East 2022
by Ethan O'Toole 03 Mar '22

Hello, An idea came to mind as a friend was repairing a bunch of Atari 8bit systems. There is a game called MidiMaze, where you can network up to 16 Atari 8bit (and supposedly ST systems) together. It's a first person shooter with smiley faces. I can find talk of 11 station system being setup, but was thinking it would be cool to do a 16 player station @ VCF. I am having PCBs made right now for all the carts, all of the midi interfaces, as well as fujinet boards for machines. I can definitely populate the carts and midi interfaces, will try to do Fujinets depending on ESP32 availability. It requires XL or XE, 64K of RAM. I have 3 machines, my friend has ~7. So we would be looking for the final systems to fill out this project. I have a spreadsheet I will post once I get my counts and Reggies system count. The current idea/dream is to run on physical Midi interfaces for the first half of VCF, then cut over to fujinet where the midi network is created over TCP/IP. We won't be loading the game from fujinet I don't think since we will have the carts and the fujinet version of the game requires a RAM expansion. Just easier to run carts. Will try to use an automated script to hit the web servers on the fujinet based on DHCP lease MAC address info and autoconfigure it all. Thoughts? Hype? How many Atari XL/XE does VCF have? - Ethan

I'm having a hard time understanding what you want. It sounds like you want to have early access to the show. Which you can do - all you have to do is pay the vendor admission fee. You chose not to. This is simply how swap meets and hamfests work. I can understand the frustration, not getting a chance at something, or seeing someone else walking off with something you wanted to buy, but, that's just how sales of anything work. You can't not allow vendors to have early access to buying stuff from each other, because, well... they have to be in there early in order to set up. Not to mention, most of the sellers already know each other. Many trades and sales were worked out days ago. One source of frustration that I see a simple solution to, is how many sales happened before the show, privately, via email, based on uploaded spreadsheets and lists of things vendors were going to bring for sale. Sure, it's frustrating if you're not checking the spreadsheets regularly, and miss out that way - but what's worse is when the item in question is physically at the show, there at a table as if it's out for sale, with no way of knowing that it's already been sold. I know at least one person that stood at a vendor's table for an hour, waiting for the vendor to return, trying to buy an item, only to find that it had been sold days before. Simple solution to this. If something is sold, either don't bring it in to your table, or put a SOLD sign on it. It should be easily clear to anyone walking around if an item is available or not. You can't pretend you can block presales, vendor to vendor sales before the event, etc. It just needs to be done in such a way as to not mislead other buyers. -Ian On Wed, Mar 2, 2022 at 4:03 PM skogkatt007--- via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > Nothing in your response changes the fact that sellers are granted exclusive early access. But upon hearing repeatedly how vendors should own the whole show, And then there was those who brag about reselling items found the very same day at a significant markup. I just couldn't keep silent. Don't get me wrong most of the vendors I dealt with were fair and respectable. There is no way to prevent every instance of impropriety. But you don't have to lay out the red carpet for those simply looking to gouge. I guess I'm not supposed to use words like that. > Oh and this is not about "money", mine or someone else's. Nor is it about "anger". I did leave the show a little angry, still am. I'm actually grieving at this point. I passed up 2 items, 1 was free, the other was 20$ and didn't work. Maybe neither did. It wasn't that I could have made a killing on either. I just wanted them. > > > On Wednesday, March 2, 2022, 02:39:50 PM EST, Dean Notarnicola <dnotarnicola(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > “One person’s trash is another’s treasure” holds true here. Survey Results of Swap Meet 2022 Feb
by Jeffrey Brace 03 Mar '22

03 Mar '22

So Rick Lewis our newest volunteer to join our group asked to help do a survey for the swap meet. It was simple, and not necessarily comprehensive, but has some useful information. He wants to help me develop more surveys to help me plan, organize and focus the events that we organize. This was our first attempt, so it is a good start. Here's the results of the survey at the swap meet on 25 Feb 2022: 50 participants were asked two questions at the entrances to the swap meet rooms - all attendees, no vendors. Q1. Have you been to a VCF swap meet before? [ Y/N ] Q2. How did you find out about this swap meet? Results: - The majority (70%) were first-time attendees, having not been to a previous swap meet. - The *VCF Website* (38%) was the greatest source of knowledge about the swap meet by a factor of nearly 3 times more than the second source (*Other; From a Friend*) at 14%. - 12% knew about the event from the amateur radio club, matching the number who heard about it from social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) - The VCF Flyer (0%) and the VCF Mid-Atlantic List were not productive sources. My 2c... I was not at the swap meet, but I can give some insight into the hundreds of hamfests I've been to (take it or leave it as to the applicability of these experiences). First, they all charge entrance fees even for buyers. It can be modest, but they all do it. This is, after all, a swap meet. If it was just an educational exhibit and you want to encourage attendance from non-vintage computing visitors, then I can see the value in free attendance. But this is for like-minded people to buy and sell stuff, so I would consider a nominal entrance fee for buyers as well. Second, in the world of hamfests, the people who buy tables (sellers) get first crack at the booty. Period. Some hamfests "discourage" trading before the gates open, but it always happens. There was a period in my life when I was a net buyer of stuff and I wanted the choicest items. For myself and my friends, if we wanted access to the good stuff, we bought our own vendor pass and entered early with the other vendors, even when we weren't selling anything. Others at these hamfests are not in a rush to buy the choicest items (the current period of my life) and so we're happy to come in with all the other buyers. Bottom line: Want access to the best stuff? Pony up the extra dough for a vendor ticket and join the party. Don't care about the best stuff and are happy with whatever stuff is still available? Come in with all the buyers. Either way, it will help raise additional money for the club when most clubs can definitely use the extra money. 2c (now worth 1c for inflation) 73 Eugene W2HX Subscribe to my Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/w2hx-channel/videos

“One person’s trash is another’s treasure” holds true here. What one may consider a golden discovery may have been overlooked by many others. I was finding things I wanted well into the swap meet. Speaking strictly for myself, my three tables were not nearly enough space to display all I had for sale, so it came out in batches over the course of the morning. Persistence was rewarded for those who came back for second or third looks. Swap Meet feedback: entrance/admission fee
by Jeffrey Jonas 02 Mar '22

Replying to Sentrytv: > One of the best ideas that you guys had > was not requiring an entrance fee for the buyers. Once upon a time, there were computer shows run by promoters such as Ken Gordon, Tri-State and Peter Trapp. Everyone paid: vendors and attendees, although discount cards were available. Swap Meet feedback: vendor early access

02 Mar '22

Replying to Adam Michlin: > To my mind, the event is nothing without the vendors > and a perk of being a vendor should be > having early access to other vendors Thank you for stating that so eloquently. At other events, I volunteered to staff a maker space's table, load and unload, etc. Early access was the perk that made it all worthwhile, thus freeing me to focus on supporting the event during "open hours". > especially since we want vendors manning their table > during open to public hours. Agreed. > Whatever "official" hours we post, > there will always be "unofficial" hours ... > So early vendor to vendor access at 7am > and general public access at 8am > seems to be the worst option > except for all those other options > that have been tried from time to time > (with apologies to Churchill). There's the letter of the law and then there's the intention of the law. There are always ways to circumvent any attempt of "fair access". One place had the rule "no SALES until opening time", so everyone quietly and politely set things aside, reserving items for other vendors until the opening bell. -- jeffj

Swap Meet feedback: hams vs vintage computer

02 Mar '22

Replying to Sentrytv: > ... I was selling some radio equipment ... > Many of the people that I know, who are hams, > asked me if this was going to be a hamfest and I said: not exactly ... It goes both ways: hams were early adopters of home computers starting with the Altair and Imasi. Some pioneered packeteering and slow-scan TV that way. Radio Electronics magazine showcased early D-I-Y computers, competing with Popular Electronics, Nuts And Volts, and Byte. I've attended hamfests and found about 1/4 computer stuff -- jeffj

Swap Meet feedback: How did it go?
by Herb Johnson 01 Mar '22

01 Mar '22

I attended the swap meet, arriving "late" to avoid the presumed early crowd and rush (Covid) and because my needs are modest. I was happy to get a variety of vintage Mac items as parts and for repair. I saw some oldest-vintage items, which is good, but I did not need them. And I bought some 20th century PC stuff to build some for-application systems, so that was good. Other than missing what apparently was a massive for-free pile, I was satisfied. People were glad to see me, and I them. So the base question on the event, is answered that it went well. Where's one room or another, where's the free stuff - I looked around and asked and found things. I'm glad things were not crowded; Covid. There was more variety than I expected; not enough really old computing but there was some. Radio? enh, there will be hamfests, but hamfests accommodate computing; computing should accommodate hams. When to close? It's already said: a significant part of sales is at the "don't want to take this home" end of the day. Four hours for the event is reasonable; set a soft close so people can hunt a little harder for a little longer. I'm glad the event didn't start at 6AM. A few people urged for free admissions for buyers. I'll be blunt - that's entirely expected and expresses self-interest. If buyers want fleamarkets to attend, it's in their interest to pay a few dollars to support the people who run them. Their payback is fun, community, and savings on purchased items. If you have questions, ask hams who run hamfests; ask people who ran events (or not) during the worst of Covid. When I saw there was no admission fee for buyers (me), I bought a couple of $2 stickers from Jeff - just to support the event. Too much money? What? I spent more on gas, I spent more on food.
