Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Swap Meet feedback: How did it go?

Hindsight being 20-20 I agree it would have been helpful if the cadets at the gate had a stack of printouts of the swap-meet aerial view with rooms pointed out to give to people entering. I 2nd the sentiment that it could have been spread out more. I saw a comment that it could have been packed tighter, but in my opinion there wasn't enough room to maneuver in the main room where Jeff was. Scottie and I really enjoyed it. The only thing I bought was a RAM upgrade for my PC, but that's more a reflection of having too much stuff at home already. I understand that most of the action happened at 8, but we're more casual buyers. We arrived around 10-10:30 and stayed until about 1. If it closed at 12, we probably wouldn't have made the 45 minute trip. Sorry, but Saturday AM sleep is a higher priority 😊. You might consider shifting the whole time window forward 2 hours (10-4 instead of 8-2) if possible. It wasn't clear where to go upon arrival since there was a lot of activity near the gate. We went that way, which took us to the "free stuff" room, then the food room, and finally the "real" swap rooms. This was probably backwards from what was intended, so I think a sign in the parking lot directing VCF people to the main entrance would have been good. It was crowded. Maybe we could spread out more by using the "free stuff" room for paid vendors also. Dave

Saw this posted on Twitter originally: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gSYxCHe_P0 (Mike and Steve Went To The VCF Swap Meet. Did They Come Home With Goodies?) I haven't gone through it all the way, but so far it's fun what they are talking about. Two of these YouTube Streamers went to our Swap Meet this past weekend and talked about what they picked up. This is great exposure for VCF and I hadn't known much about these guys before this. Be warned, it is 5 hours and 17 minutes long. Any interest in a hands-on demo for fusion splicing fiber? Would likely occur during a fall workshop, asking early to seek donation of consumables Small group (no more than 8 people) * Here's a demo from our fiber vendor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPVvb6cmjds * Here's the dealer page for the splicer we would be using: https://splicerstore.com/fusion-splicer/fujikura-19s-fusion-splicer-s015679/ * If there's any interest, we may also go retro with cleave, epoxy, and polish Martin Flynn

Charging vendors and using those funds to underwrite the cost of the event reduces the entry barrier and maximizes engagement. Vendors don't mind (some view it as the cost of early access, while others see it as simply the funds needed to justify the event), and attendees have little excuse not to attend. Of course, if traffic gets too high, attendance fees can help manage it, so it can be useful as well. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Swap Meet feedback: How did it go?
by Adam Michlin 28 Feb '22

To my mind, the event is nothing without the vendors and a perk of being a vendor should be having early access to other vendors especially since we want vendors manning their table during open to public hours. Whatever "official" hours we post, there will always be "unofficial" hours. And it is worth mentioning that vendors are the only ones paying to be there. So early vendor to vendor access at 7am and general public access at 8am seems to be the worst option except for all those other options that have been tried from time to time (with apologies to Churchill). -Adam On Mon, Feb 28, 2022 at 11:53 AM Sentrytv via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > Well I guess they can tighten up restrictions on everybody, to stay at their own table after moving stuff in. > Until the pre-arranged time. > > But then it wouldn’t be fun would it? > > > Sent from: > My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device. > > On Feb 28, 2022, at 11:27 AM, Dave Shevett via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > Oh I remember it :). Volunteer hours for 2021
by Jeffrey Brace 28 Feb '22

28 Feb '22

Hello everyone, InfoAge needs an estimate of volunteer hours for their tax return. It benefits them a lot. The more hours the volunteers report, the better for them. Not everyone is using https://www.trackitforward.com/ to keep track of their hours on a weekly basis, so estimation is necessary now. If you could estimate how many hours that you volunteered in 2021 including talking on the phone, meetings, docent duty, repair workshops, etc. Basically anything that you did for VCF. I know that this is hard to estimate for the whole year, but it really helps InfoAge a lot. It shouldn't take too long if you are only estimate. To make it easier just figure out how many times you did something (i.e. docent every week for 4 hours, repair workshop every month for 15 hours, etc.) and the number of hours you spent doing it. InfoAge needs this quickly as they are preparing their taxes, so if you can get it to me within a week, then they would appreciate it! You can send me a private e-mail with the number of hours for the year. Thanks! ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Swapmeep
by Sentrytv 28 Feb '22

Just wanted to say the swapmeet, to me , was a success. There was definitely quite a few vendors and the foot traffic was almost overwhelming before 11am. I sold a few items, bought a few, took home some free stuff, ( did I really need that) and talked to so many people that I am hoarse today. Just would like to thank all involved who made it happen! Next swapmeet I will bring more radio equipment also. Looking forward to being outside (hopefully) for the next swapmeet. Mike R. Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

Sorry to miss the swap meet, but think I finally got enough catalogued and photographed to share with the group. I was able to go through most of my Apple collection, but I will keep adding other items then alert the list with significant updates. The URL won’t change so if anyone likes they can just go back to the page to see if there’s anything new. There are some notes at the top of the sheet, but to reinforce: All large items are for local pickup only (just NW of Philadelphia, near the PA Turnpike at Fort Washington) and I’ll accept cash or PayPal Friends & Family. Smaller items may be available for shipping at the buyer’s cost. Prices are just asking prices and certainly negotiable! Please respond to me directly and don’t post offers to the list - I’m sure the admins will appreciate that. ;-) If you see an error in the listings or some price is egregious please let me know. That being said, the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ttnt42zcjHlXb2Oi8_Wc00-9kTQzQ-p9RMn… More to come, including manuals, books, and software at the end. Commodore, Atari, TRS-80, TI, TS, etc. coming soon. I need to make space so I can even look at some of the stuff. Thanks for looking! Bob Shuster

Hello! Sorry gang, this is one VCF event I won't be able to make it to the event tomorrow. It seems that I have a conflict in that a family event is scheduled for the same date, and the individual who scheduled insists that they forgot about what I had originally planned on doing. Thanks all for the input! I’ll assume this is indeed a 16K expansion board, but a generic card not from a major manufacturer. It’s in a 48K Apple ][ Plus. Is there a command to report the amount of RAM on an Apple II? I recall on the TRS-80 it was simply PRINT MEM. Bob Shuster

Hello! It's been a while. I remember watching as such a card was installed into the one we owned, and from there, the cable was placed into the socket where its RAM chip was swapped out of. Typically the routines to do so are embedded into DOS3.3 and related releases directly, and are not normally encoded into a ROM chip. You would find them on disk controller cards say, and even the odd serial card though. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." VCF Swap Meet Free Pile
by Jeffrey Brace 22 Feb '22

22 Feb '22

VCF has collected several items over the last three years of events that have not sold over multiple events which will be offered for free in a "free pile" at this weekend's Swap Meet and this is the last opportunity to rescue these items as anything left will be recycled. Sellers who have paid for a spot will have first opportunity access to this "free pile" before the start of the event and in all cases items are available on a strict first come first serve basis. Additionally, both sellers and buyers are welcome to put items in this "free pile" with the understanding of certain rules. RULES FOR THE VCF FREE PILE: 1. Please ask a VCF staff member for permission at the event to put any items in the free pile. 2. Please understand the policy for the free pile is that anything you leave which remains at the end of the event must be taken home by you (or someone you designate). VCF cannot be held responsible for storing or recycling it. Thanks and happy free hunting!

Feb. 26, 2022 VCF Swap Meet update
by Jeffrey Brace 22 Feb '22

22 Feb '22

All the advertising that Adam and myself have been doing has gotten more inquiries and phone calls. We have 32 people with 47 spaces so far. There are definitely more that will be "paying at the door" who haven't registered, but I know that they are coming to the event. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Swap meet question
by Joseph Giliberti 22 Feb '22

22 Feb '22

Greetings! I've got two spots at the swap meet. Is it okay to use have a table in one spot and then have things on the floor in the other? Things on the floor are big items and wouldn't be a trip hazard. Thanks, Joe Giliberti

Help identifying Apple II board
by Bob Shuster 22 Feb '22

22 Feb '22

I found a card installed in one of my Apple II computers and I can find nothing about it online. The only labels are a brand name - I think - “Elite” - and “YKH Interface” near the card edge. It has a connector that plugs into one of the RAM sockets on the main board, so I assume it to be a RAM expansion, particularly since it’s populated by 8x16K RAM chips. Pictures available at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1tkRch5-lrEj65uZsJqKgxVGH-id4crRz?us… Anyone? I don't have an OS to run on these Apple IIs, just what they boot up to from the ROMs. Bob Shuster

Can someone diagnose a Vic20 Saturday morning?
by Eric Rangell 22 Feb '22

22 Feb '22

Hi all, I have a Vic20 that the seller told me was rescued from the garbage. Looking at it I found 2 issues - photos here: https://twitter.com/RatifyArticle1/status/1495851785885560841 <https://twitter.com/RatifyArticle1/status/1495851785885560841> It still doesn’t have video when turned on. I have a list of the chips to check - they are all receiving power. Let me know if anyone will be available to take a look at it and try to diagnose the problem in the CDL sometime between 7am and 1pm Saturday. Thanks, Eric

Update: I’m finally going through the Apple II systems. Any Apple II experts/aficionados who might be willing to help me ID and value stuff? I have an Apple II Plus, an Apple IIe, and an Apple IIe Platinum (and I thought I had a gs somewhere but haven’t located it yet.) I also have a few peripherals and a bunch of expansion cards (plus of course the installed boards.) Bob Shuster

Sun LSA800 18.1" LCD Monitors
by Stephen A Edwards 19 Feb '22

19 Feb '22

I have two Sun LSA800 18.1" LCD Monitors, which are interesting only because they have Sun's 13W3 connectors (in addition to VGA) so they can work directly with 90s-era Sun machines. One of them has a bad (cracked) panel, but the backlight, controller, etc. are all OK. Does anybody have a panel with a bad controller that could use these parts for repair? The other is working fine, albeit missing its bizarre 14V power supply (replacements can be ordered on Amazon!). Is someone interested in purchasing this at the swapmeet?

Memotech experts on-list?
by Richard Cini 19 Feb '22

19 Feb '22

All – While moving things around in the shop, I found a US-badged Memotech MTX512 I bought a few years ago. That got me thinking about playing with and expanding it. The floppy FDX units are pretty rare so I thought about re-making the interface card inside to connect floppy drives or a Gotek to it. However, what I can’t seem to locate on Primrosebank (http://www.primrosebank.net/computers/mtx/mtxmanuals.htm#hardware) is a schematic for the actual guts of the FDX unit. I can find the RS-232/floppy card (really a bus buffer), but not the inner-workings of the FDX itself. There’s a picture or two here (http://www.nyangau.org/memotech/hardware.htm) but no schematics for either the bus interface card or the controller card itself. Looks like it uses a weird kind of expansion bus cage. Maybe the later SDX version is the same, but not sure. Anyway, if there’s someone on-list with Memotech experience and can point me in the right direction, it’d be greatly appreciated. Thanks! VCF East Exhibit Planning
by Alexander Pierson 19 Feb '22

19 Feb '22

Howdy everyone, VCF East is just over 2 months away, which is weird because it feels like it just happened like a month ago. I haven't heard much in the way of chatter of exhibit plans yet, so I'm curious what folks are working on, or thinking about exhibiting come April. I saw Jason was planning a PBX exhibit, which I can't recall seeing before at East, so that sounds cool. Seeing as this year is the 40th anniversary of the Commodore 64 release, I imagine someone is intending to do an exhibit focused on it. To that end, if anyone would like to borrow my early model C64 for the show, let me know. Silver label, Rev A motherboard, very low serial number, and most importantly it works: https://commodorez.com/img/silverlabel.jpg <https://commodorez.com/img/silverlabel.jpg> I'm gearing up to exhibit my Nova 1200 now that it's running properly. RIght now it looks like it will just be demoing Single User BASIC with an H19 for a terminal. It's not an exact match for the hardware, but it'll do considering I don't have any other Data General equipment. <https://commodorez.com/img/silverlabel.jpg> -Alexander 'Z' Pierson
