Halt and catch fire- were the online gaming services really that significant?
by Douglas Crawford 12 Feb '22

12 Feb '22

Hi ya'll: (1) I never finished watching the series but I was taken back by how big of a deal they present the online gaming development intrigue of that time. I never joined one of those services back then, so I may be totally ignorant of a whole subculture I never got exposed to, but was it really that big of a deal? Was it as compelling as the video series suggests? Did they make very creative use of the C64's abilities that is also suggested? I didn't think so, I never was exposed to the "buzz" of it but I might have just be oblivious. (2) I didn't know anything about PLATO back in the day either, but that, in retrospect seems like it was the promising online system for multi user gaming by creating a terminal environment to encapsulate the experience not unlike how Web browsers did later.

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: time to downsize
by Bob Shuster 12 Feb '22

12 Feb '22

Just an update on my progress! I finished photographing and cataloguing the Apple Mac Plus and later systems and displays, and I am now working on the peripherals and ephemera for those (keyboards, mice, printers, etc.) Next up will be the Apple II era systems. I also have bunch of other collectable but not necessarily vintage Apple devices such as early iPods and iPads, but I think those will wait until the end. Once I reach what I feel is a significant milestone I’ll share the Google doc with the list - but I’m not quite there yet. Bob Shuster

The two subjects are unrelated for the purpose of this diacussion (I just need CL's contact info). There was a recent discussion about building a 6800 based s100 board (pretty sure all that is accurate). Well somewhat along those lines is a book I got as an interlibrary loan, 68000 Microcompuyer Systems, Fesigning and Troubleahooting by Alan Wilcox. Just picked it up today, just started perusing it. Looks damned fine. It isn't cheap, around 100$ on Amazon. But you can always borrow it like I have.

OT: Recommendations for Hotels in InfoAge area
by Herb Johnson 11 Feb '22

11 Feb '22

To be brief: People are suggesting hotels, but not costs. "Pricey", "affordable", "cheap" are undefined. Well, cost is subject-relevant. If one doesn't want to name their actual cost, maybe they can suggest "affordable from $X to $Y". Because Jersey Shore costs are seasonal, one might also mention the month they stayed. Likely prices in April, are something Jeff Brace can check upon when he produces his recommendation list for publication. Covid shortages will likely raise prices. He might consider arranging for a "convention hotel" with a discounted rate, if the terms are acceptable and available. Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. OT: Recommendations for Hotels in InfoAge area
by Jeffrey Brace 07 Feb '22

It's been many years since I have stayed in hotels in the InfoAge area, so I have a rough idea of how good or bad certain ones are. I need more current recommendations. Can anyone tell me which ones that they recommend and which ones to avoid? I'm asking because some speakers that will be staying in the area during VCF East want recommendations. So far I have a recommendation for Courtyard Wall at Monmouth Shores Corporate Park (part of Marriott chain). This will also help me if anyone else wants a recommendation. I can put on the website for VCF East possibly. “Comcast@Home” internet speeds 1998 or so?
by John Heritage 03 Feb '22

03 Feb '22

Hey folks, I’m trying to remember what download speeds Comcast@Home offered circa 1998 (when I first had cable modem). I remember the upload speeds initially being 256-384 kbps but then Comcast cut the upload to 128 kbps. This was terrible not just because it was slow but it was barely enough bandwidth to even request data fast enough to saturate the download speed. I think the initial download speeds were 3 or 4 mbps with cable modems in 1998 (south jersey area - former Storer Cable area), but I have a couple of friends who think it was more like 768kbps - 1 mbps. Any one have memories of this time? P.S. My google-fu sees a lot of ~ 2.8 mbps down on Cox@Home and some other @Home providers around 2000-2003 but I’m having trouble finding earlier than that period online. Thanks! John

https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/comcast-announces-10g-advances <https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/comcast-announces-10g-advances> Full Duplex DOCSIS4 changes things. As for 'not enough bandwidth (in coax)' - you have to understand what is happening. The entire path from the head-end to your home drop is being virtualized. “To do this, the team activated what we believe to be another world first – a virtualized cable modem termination system (vCMTS) powered by Full Duplex DOCSIS 4.0 Technology." The virtualization of the CMTS plant infra is going to allow these speeds (for customers that choose and pay for that tier). Yes, it's going to cost, and maybe you are good with 1Gb! But some people will want more. 10G is just showing the max bandwidth - I doubt there will be a plan for 10Gb available for a while. It is probably rate limited 10G or what they call fractional. I have multiple 10Gbps circuits at work and we were offered fractional. They all seem to do the same thing. They run some SMF and put a box on your site that they manage to do the rate limiting. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] ?Comcast@Home? internet speeds 1998 or so?

02 Feb '22

For DOCSIS 1.0, max upstream bitrate was either 5 or 10 Mbps, depending upon whether the physical plant could support 16QAM or required usage of slower QPSK modulation. Actual per modem maximum was significantly less because of the way upstream bandwidth was managed through a TDM scheme that required the cable modem to request upstream bandwidth every time it needed to send something. If I recall correctly most cable plants started out having a lot of trouble with QAM 16, so ended up at QPSK speeds to start with. Downstream theoretical max per modem was a bit under 40 Mbps, a bit higher in Europe because cable channels are 8Mhz wide instead of 6Mhz. Actual per modem rates would typically be significantly less. I can’t remember whether per CM rate limiting was provisionable by the MSO (cable operator) in the very first versions or not, but it wasn’t long before MSO had pretty good control of who could use what bandwidth. Regards, Mike Willegal things have changed a lot- a few years ago I was able to demonstrate about 2Gbps upstream in a lab environment to a single modem with DOCSIS 3.1 technology

Wrap-up of System Source Repair Workshop 1/29 & 1/30, 2022
by Jeffrey Brace 01 Feb '22

01 Feb '22

I had a great time at System Source's Repair Workshop this past weekend. Bob Roswell was a very generous and gracious host. I left at 7:30PM on Friday night because the snow was piling up in NJ. I live near InfoAge so the whole area got 12 inches of snow. But west and southwest of my home, got little to none. So the drive to System Source was a breeze with mostly highway. It took about 3 hours. Stayed at a hotel Friday and Saturday night and got a good sleep. When I got there Saturday things were in full swing with the usual suspects from InfoAge repair workshops, plus the usual System Source suspects. So a very good turnout of about 25 or so people. Lots of stuff fixed as I saw. I made some pickups of repaired VCF artifacts and drop-offs to be repaired artifacts. I loved looking at what was new and looking in more detail at the exhibits in the museum. I also got to catch up on all my friends there and talk about vintage computer stuff it was great! I also got a chance to play with the Xerox Alto for a few hours and see what worked and what didn't. Very cool and rare opportunity for a rare machine that works! This was my favorite part of the weekend. Maybe others want to chime in on what they were working on. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: time to downsize
by Bob Shuster 01 Feb '22

01 Feb '22

Just an update and a question. UPDATE: I'm slowly going through my newer (post-1984) Apple products and testing and/or clearing the hard drives of personal information, then photographing and adding them to my Google Sheets doc. I suspect the older machines will go faster as they have no hard storage to contend with (or obscure monitor connections that I have to remember how to connect or locate the right adapter!) Be patient, the list will be posted as soon as I make enough significant headway. QUESTION: I’m just starting to tackle my Macintosh Plus (ED) 1MB (M0001A), but I cannot locate system disks to test it. Would any group members have these and be willing to give/loan/sell me so I can test the machine? Bob Shuster

OT: PC donations to Red Bank Regional High School (Little Silver, NJ)
by Adam Michlin 31 Jan '22

31 Jan '22

Hi Everyone, As many of you know, I teach computer science at Red Bank Regional High School in Little Silver, NJ. I'm trying to help my colleague who teaches IT. He does a lot of projects where the students take apart computers and put them back together (a project near and dear to mine and many of your hearts), but his class sizes are outpacing his supply of PCs. I'm hoping to collect 10-15 not so vintage PCs (core 2 duos and P4s are fine, but obviously we won't complain about better machines). The key is they have to be normal sized PCs, the kind that make it relatively easy for a 9th or 10th grader student to take it apart and put it back together. So no small form factor PCs or laptops. These would be donations and individual machines are fine. If you happen to be downsizing your desktop PCs at the office, that would be even better. Working or not working. I can pick up in most of NJ and will be at the VCF Swap Meet at InfoAge on February 26th, as well. Please contact me directly off list at <adam.michlin(a)vcfed.org> if you have any offers or questions. Thank you for your consideration, -Adam

Vax 9000 transfer
by Jeffrey Brace 31 Jan '22

31 Jan '22

Hello everyone, The VCF Board and Steering Committee have decided to transfer our VAX 9000 out of our inventory to someone who has the ability to move 18 pallets and 6 rolling cabinets without charging us to get it out of the warehouse. We don't have the funding for such a move. This decision was made primarily because the machine is not functional, and we don't have the resources (time, parts, power requirements) to make it operational or display in our museum. Please be assured that it went to a very good home, to someone who has the time, space, and money to display it properly. In addition to providing a better home for this historical artifact, this move provided us the added bonus of clearing a significant amount of space in our warehouse, which gives us much needed breathing room to better organize our existing artifacts, as well as be more prepared for any potential future rescues. The triage process for computer rescues is never ending, so we need to manage all of our resources to keep things under control, as well as acknowledge when a particular artifact might have a better home elsewhere. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2>

Trade / wish list for the Feb 26th swap meet?
by Dave Shevett 31 Jan '22

31 Jan '22

Hi everyone, new to the list - I'm hoping to make it to the swap meet on Feb 26th, and I'm wondering if folks have a few things I'm looking for... * AT&T 3b1 / 7300 / UnixPC hardware - looking for an actual 3b1, but also for boards and media. * AT&T 605 terminal(s) * Nothern Telecom Displayphone (hah, unlikely, but I want to toss it out there) * DEC terminals - specifically any VT2x+ terminals (Have several VT100's already) * DEC micro- hardware. Talking microvax, micropdp11, and Pro350 - specifically the 'under desk vertical cased' machines * DEC VK100 / GIGI terminal (a barco monitor with it would be amazing) More traditionally * TRS-80 Model III and Model 1 hardware * Non-bulky ascii terminals (altos terminals would be wonderful) And, because I'm the Handheld guy, any handheld computers. My wishlist / current collection is here: https://planet-geek.com/vintage-handheld-computers/ I have to offer: * Osbourne 1 * Kaypro 2, Kaypro 4, maybe a Kaypro 10? * Several HP calculators * Coleco Adam complete Looking forward to seeing folks... -d -- Dave Shevett shevett(a)pobox.com

Atari 8bit brown carts might be needed, common titles (VCFE)
by Ethan O'Toole 30 Jan '22

30 Jan '22

Hello, Just curious, does anyone have like 16 of the brown Atari 8bit carts, common titles or bad front labels? Looking to assemble 16 midimaze carts and trying to decide if I recycle old carts or 3d print some kinda shell. I see the XEGS style carts on thingiverse that look usable but not the brown carts. More on this in a bit :-)

VCF East Related
by Martin Flynn 30 Jan '22

30 Jan '22

So the usual suspects from both CDL and VCF have been upgrading the network at Camp Evans. As noted by Jeff B, we extended single-mode fiber to 9032 and have the access points and a 48 port PoE switch staged to deploy. Question for the folks that will be exhibiting in or using 9032A for VCF East: Will anyone need telephone lines (analog / ISDN) or wired Internet connections during VCF East in the big room? Knowing ahead of time will let us prioritize the work better Martin Flynn

Would love someone to see if it is working! I have many, very many, from small AlphaStations to ES47s. If you wish, I could drop by and see if whatever Alpha model you are speaking about is functional. I have stacks and stacks of Itanium servers too. I suppose those haven't achieved vintage status quite yet.

PI day (March 14)
by Jeffrey Jonas 29 Jan '22

29 Jan '22

March 14th is "pi day". Tau Beta Pi is the engineering honor society for all engineering disciplines (unlike HKN: IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu, the honor society of IEEE ... for electrical engineering, computer engineering, and other IEEE fields of interest. https://hkn.ieee.org/ ) TBP celebrates PI day, so should we! https://www.tbp.org/other/PiDay.cfm In conjunction with the annual celebration on March 14 commemorating the mathematical constant, the Association encourages its members to take advantage of this great opportunity to proudly display their membership, participate in engineering-related activities, and wear your Bent, charm, and other TBP apparel. Join us on Monday, March 14, 2022, or celebrate all month!

I can read your stuff. And yahoo even resists my attempts to specify plain text. Or maybe it's android. Why they default to html or unicode or rich text is beyond me. Thoroughly stupid. It's Chris by the way. On Saturday, January 29, 2022, 05:29:22 PM EST, Alexander Pierson <ajpierson1(a)yahoo.com> wrote:

Plaintext Emails
by Jonathan Chapman 29 Jan '22

29 Jan '22

All, Hate to be That Guy on a listserv, but some folks are sending non-plaintext emails, which the listserv turns into an attachment (I get a body of "Empty Message" with something like email-1.eml attached). I don't bother to read those, and I suspect few who read text-only mailing lists do either. You can typically configure an email client, even most webmail clients, to treat listservs as plaintext-only. Please consider taking the time to do that for those of us who will otherwise just ignore the message. I also don't know what it looks like on whatever the web presentation of the list is. Thanks, Jonathan
