Vendor Tables at VCF East
by Jeffrey Brace 18 May '21

18 May '21

Hello vintage computer vendors, VCF East is planned to be a live in-person show October 8, 9 & 10. It looks like it will be the biggest show yet with lots of great speakers, exhibitors, classes and of course vendors. Would you like to have a vendor table VCF East? I have created a vendor registration for you to fill out. If you have any questions, then please ask me! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdbmxktA4G_Jb_ZtVYIOa66cJG7TebmKNd… ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

May Repair workshop
by Jeffrey Brace 18 May '21

18 May '21

Much thanks to Tony and Dean for managing the workshop on Saturday and part of Sunday. I had a much needed break from doing the workshops each month. The May repair workshop had half the number of usual suspects, but a lot got done. Lots of good work done by the people there. It also made it easier to find a place to go out to dinner as a larger group of 15 is harder to accomodate on a Saturday night. I know that Jeff Salzman and Herb were working on the H89, and got it mostly working. So hopefully at the June repair workshop we can get Alex Bodnar to come take a look at it since he seems to be highly recommended in repairing these machines. I know that Bill I and Jeff Jonas were making progress in the warehouse. I'm not sure what else went on. I got there at 1PM on Sunday. Maybe others can fill us in on their progress in different areas. Next repair workshop is June 12 & 13. Look for the next e-mail for the sign up. ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Hello! Yes it would be. If there was one closer to the present location. or is that yet another museum? Especially as I thought the one that lives at InfoAge was part of the VCF commitment to the location? And remember that was written by the people who brought us that strange serial about a strange location in that area. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." by Jeffrey Brace 16 May '21

16 May '21

Sorry for the delay, but we wanted to make sure everything was in place as we start gearing up for VCF East 2021! Our assumption is that we will be doing a live show with few restrictions as things are looking really good in New Jersey and are expected to be even better by October. This is the link for registration of your exhibit: https://forms.gle/HMMqS5NbaS3Cu5c18 Over the next few weeks we will be sending out updates on VCF East 2021. We already have some exciting speakers lined up for the show and we have some changes to the show that I hope everyone will find exciting and make it a more festive Festival. ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Here is a link that I found online after I read a newspaper article referring to the federal government, general services administration, providing free offices to Nonprofit organizations and others. These “offices” happen to be old light houses that are no longer are used. Would it be interesting if VCF were to have a computer museum in a lighthouse? H89 for museum; gotek?
by Herb Johnson 16 May '21

16 May '21

The subject of the Museum's H89 and the May workshop continues. I'm not discussing the GoTek. In short summary, it works but there's some problems. It is not ready for Museum operation. I did not have time, to work on the companion external floppy drive, but I am aware of certain problems with it. I counted the H89's in the Warehouse, there are several which I did not examine closely. I will follow up in due course. Thanks to Jeff Saltzman, he provided assistance and tools some bootable diskettes from the H89 he successfully was able to operate. Thanks to CDL for their tools and workspace. Thanks to the VCFed staff for their assistance and borrowing the Radio Club's Variac, and conducting me to the Warehouse to assess the H89's there. By "works", I mean I could boot a HDOS 40 track hard-sectored diskette to the HDOS prompt. But 1) two characters on the keyboard, I and K and J, produce odd results. So it's hard to operate the H89 if you can't "type" I or J or K. The H89 has a CPU/computer board and a seperate terminal board, they are connected by a serial link. so the problem is more likely on the "terminal" side. 2) The drive and controller are single-sided 40 track and hard sectored. So only HDOS and CP/M disks for the Heath H89 in that format can be used. The drive initially did not spin disks well because the hub mech was gummed up. I disassembled, cleaned, relubricated that mech. 3) There's tantalum caps on the CPU board of the system which are running just at rated voltage (20 volts). From my experience, they are at risk of shorting and catching fire. They could be replaced with higher voltage ratings, or possibly the DC voltage can be reduced, or the H89 can be run at reduced AC voltage (below 120VAC which is at-the-outlet at InfoAge). These are known issues with known solutions. (Readers: there's no need to go nuts about diagnosing these problems. They are known to any H89 owner who does repairs. I'm not stumped. I'm just sayin', these are the results of a day's work. ) The H89 as displayed, has a companion disk drive in cabinet. The drive in it matches the drive described in the H89. It has at least the same gummy-spindle problem. I did not power it up or work on it Saturday, I won't be there Sunday. In the warehouse are about six H89's, condition undetermined. Rumor is, some were provided as with issues. I did not assess their operating condition, I just counted them, they are stored where they should be. I emailed some details to Jeff Brace today, and put paper notes on the units for the Museum staff. I'll publish details on my Web site in due course. I may be able to work further on these items, to be determined. Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Mac IIci, dead after power on
by Herb Johnson 14 May '21

14 May '21

I'm a little confused by the telegraphic (short) descriptions that Ethan gives for what he's repaired on and the symptoms of his IIci. (Hint: I think his Mac may be running but it's not producing a VGA-compatible video.) Here's the translation and the gloss to explain it. My read is: the Mac when bought, was dead, no power no video no audio. (Macs "chime", a musical chord, on power up. He describes "chime" but maybe he means "when the power button is pressed to start the Mac".) He then recapped the what? motherboard? power supply? - still no video or maybe no audio. But he says he measures DC power. The 68K Macs (ones with a 68000 series processor), like PCs, operate the power supply from a start-up circuit which is activated by a push-button to the motherboard (mobo) starting circuit. There's a button on the motherboard, and there's also a power key on the Mac ADB-type keyboards (as he describes). There's a way to short two pins on the DC power connector to force the power-supply to "wake up" - Web search for that. The IIci, IIcx and 700 models use the same power supply. Look it up. "screen is black, monitor wakes up" decrypts to "maybe my VGA monitor is showing there's a signal, but it doesn't display it". That may be correct! The Mac has a video connector which needs a quote "Mac to VGA adapter" which mechanically rearranges signals but does nothing to them. The IIci native video, is *not. VGA. compatible.*. The native IIci video (on mobo) however, will never EVER run a VGA only monitor. So it's possible the IIci is producing a video signal. On my Mac IIci, I have a Nubus video card and use that video for VGA compatible results. The Macs "sense" which video connector (on mobo or NuBus) has a cable attached, and route video (and video signal rates) *according to the connector that's cabled up* (which video you connect the monitor to) and select video mode (horizontal vertical signal rates, resolution modes) according to *specific grounded pins on the Mac DB-15 video connector*. The "Mac to VGA adapter" selects those grounded pins. What about the chime? Well, it's common for these Macs to lose their audio. The circuits which produce the audio, tend to corrode out, from both the failing electrolytics PLUS actual corrosion as a consequence of being near the clock circuits. Huh? Well, the Mac time-of-day clock, has constant battery power. That constant DC current creates a galvanic copper rust. Some of that current "creeps" over to the audio circuits. There may be some audio but it may be very quiet. Of course the power supplies fail too, like other switching power supplies. One can research these 68K Mac behaviors on the Web, and Apple had some internal repair diagnostic documents, and "Apple service manuals" per model. Look on the Web for these. But Apple did not document what happens 30 years later; that gets described on the Web by those who repair these things. I don't have much on Mac repairs on my site, I just sell Mac parts, like these. regards, Herb Johnson unexpected Mac geek -- Herbert R. VHS tapes for backup drives back in 80s/early 90s?
by John Heritage 14 May '21

14 May '21

Hey all - just curious if anyone actually used modified VHS tape players/recorders for backing up their BBS or computer in generally back in the actual day? I understand you can get a few GB on the tapes which would have been a huge amount in the late 80s and still useful up until at least the mid-90s.. If yes what was the setup, and how did it attach to your computer? what software was used?

You had to press play, record, stop just like using an audio cassette. I never used it since it was just too manual and unreliable. >> "we need working 10 meg cartridge system >> can you help?" I got an inquiry of this sort recently. The person obtained a IoMEGA "Bernoulli" 10MB cartridge drive, previously for Apple/Macintosh use. The Bernoulli carts are flexible disk media in a black plastic cartridge. A predecessor of the IoMEGA 100MB/250MB ZIP carts and drives. None of these are "hard disks" literally, as I said they are flexible media. I have one of the 20MB drives and IBM PC ISA controllers and some media, described on my Web site. My colleague Caudle shows a model too in his post. There also were, many hard-disk media small cartridge drives in the era. But "10MB" suggests Bernoulli, unless it's Diablo/Pertec/etc. minicomputer class disk-pack drives from the 1970's which is unlikely. Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Tandy 10 mb (was:) 10 meg cartridge system
by Herb Johnson 12 May '21

https://www.thecomputerarchive.com/Catalogs%20and%20Price%20Lists/Retail/Ta… page 19 of this Radio Shack catalog shows what looks to me like a Bernoulli 10MB drive cabinet. The 20MB drive cabinet and drives look the same but the 20MB system can only read, not write, 10MB carts. Web search "Tandy 6000, 10 meg cartridge system" found this catalog. I imagine "Bernoulli 10 MB cartridge" will be informative. Who knows if a non-Tandy controller/software can read Tandy carts? Or if the Tandy drive system was compatible with non-Tandy models (IBM, Mac, ??). http://www.retrotechnology.com/aux/iomega10.html my 10MB drive and controller and such. Mac IIci, dead after power on
by Ethan O'Toole 10 May '21

Working on IIci I picked up at swap meet. Ex-Cisco, it's gonna be sweet. I read that the battery doesn't matter. Pulled it. Zero leakage. Pre-recap, no life. Post-recap, no life. (Re-capped machine.) 5v 500ma line is fine from the PSU 12v line is fine from the PSU 5v line is fine from the PSU Not sure about -12, but probably just audio? No power on chime. Screen is black, monitor wakes up. Haven't used the DB-15 to VGA 6 switch converter in ages but it worked last time. Powers on from keyboard or rear panel switch. I guess the first things to check are the CPU reset circuit and the clock. Any other pointers from Mac geeks? :-) Recapped the A1200 motherboard I picked up and it booted! Now trying to decide on keyboard options. - Ethan

H89 for museum; gotek?
by Herb Johnson 09 May '21

09 May '21

Just as a matter of courtesy: consider starting a new thread when the conversation changes greatly from the "subject" line. I am a user, I'm not in charge. But since I'm posting a response, I'll change the subject line. The subject of the thread "Needed SD card solutions for museum" was about SDcard adapters to replace floppy drives on 8-bit computers. But most of the thread now is entirely about an H89 acquired which may be donated to the VCFed museum; and/or about the utility of a "Gotek" hardware product for it that emulates various vintage floppy drives with file-storage. I would have ignored the thread, except by luck. I read this list online, after the fact; not by emails. And anyone looking backwards or search, would not find those H89 interests among the subject lines, until now. The H89 by Heath and Zenith is a great 8-bit Z80 system. It works fine with original hardware and software, and hard or soft sectored disks. One needs a controller for each, with drives dedicated for each. That's how it was done in the era. But people today do like putting modern widgets and new boards on it, some use modern mass storage. The H89 and support for it, or a system to restore or to pass to the Museum, are certainly worth their own discussion threads. As for modern SDcard or CompactFlash devices that emulate floppy drives, like GoTek. I don't follow them much. But it's unusual for them to support formats like Heath's hard-sectored USART based floppy controller. It's a technical challenge, not just "bugs" to fix. If GoTek supports that better over time, that's interesting and good news. Regards, Herb Johnson retrotechnology.com https://retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/s_zenith.html#h89 -- Herbert R. vcf-midatlantic] Value of Air Compressor in CDL workshop
by Herb Johnson 09 May '21

09 May '21

> used 5HP air compressor, Grainger Model is 3Z724, needs work. > This unit is actually 208, 3 Phase. It's belt driven and only > turns 1800 RPM at the motor pulley. Just my opinions, following. This is tremendous overkill for blowing some dust off some electronics, that being any vintage-computing interest. Especially when considering it will be operated in another room, meaning running air lines to workbenches. Cans of compressed air (or a shop-vac) solve the dust-cleaning problem immediately, cleanly, no oil. Otherwise it seems to me, CDL is talking about labor and capital improvements - like running lines between rooms, housing noisy compressors, equipment maintenance, filters, etc. But CDL didn't ask for advice. They asked VCFed, what as customers of CDL what they might use at their bench. So I'll hold my tongue about advice to CDL. But if they decide against acquiring it: 1) this might be a capital equipment tool, better suited for working on cars, trucks, mowers, big mechanical stuff. Are there not other groups at InfoAge who do that stuff? Equipment Maintenance? or the military vehicle folks? they may find better use, make repairs, make/keep it portable. Then it would be available to CDL intermittently. 2) If the unit is really worn out or busted; there's that 1800RPM 5HP electric motor. That's pretty hefty, and a low rotation rate (most motors are 3600RPM). That sure would nicely feed some rotating equipment (I own a lathe myself). Or maybe a DC or AC generator, as a motor/generator set. and CDL is in the end a "maker" group, parts is part of making (seems to me). But if they don't want a motor like that, some other group at InfoAge might. regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R.
