Conner helped me to a major clean over the weekend - and we found a bunch of items I would have brought to the swap meet if I'd known I had them... Here's the list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11drIhCBIH6d6c0qaeM076TwuQpI6hyv2n74… I can bring items to the upcoming workshop if you're interested! Items in strikethrough have been sold. The GNETIC86 Youtube account is mine (used to be for my car stuff), my buddy Curt who was with me took the drone vids. He's fairly new to it and trying to get into it as a hobby, and since a couple people asked about getting drone footage he figured he'd bring it and get some shots. Jeff G (aka Bags)

Drone at the Swap Meet
by Herb Johnson 04 May '21

04 May '21

Christian Liendo posted some video links he found - thanks! Nice overhead view of the event. Funny videos, mostly about things obtained at the event and what happened at home with them. I recognize some of the stuff. The comps I bought there, all worked as claimed. And those in the videos who bought, were told what worked and what didn't, and that was mostly correct. So that's how these events work. By the way: someone I know among our VCFed crowd, selling at the event, wanted to show me another day some compact Macs he obtained recently. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of that masked man, to remind him of that offer today. All I have is this silver bullet .... Regards, Herb -- Herbert R. OT - 120v to 240v step up recommendations
by John Heritage 03 May '21

03 May '21

Hey folks I have a new Amiga PSU coming on from icomp that is 240V only. I'm looking for recommendations for a 120 to 240V step up transformer rated for at least 100W (so it doesnt have to work hard). Preferably silent. Etc. Also what should I avoid in this space ? P.S. This PSU is the "CA PSU" from icomp - and not an original commodore unit (as they are hard to find and old) nor one of the meanwell based units on ebay that have problems with accelerated amigas. I do have a cheap one and while it can do my slightly expanded 1200 it's hard fail on an expanded 500. Thanks !

Sentry, here's the thread where I asked about the 120V option: https://forum.icomp.de/index.php?thread/1830-aca500-i-may-have-damaged-the-… He never directly said no to 120V input, but mentioned using either a 240V transformer or rewiring with a 12V/5A DC PSU. (Replies #5 and #6). The link for the item for sale also says 200-240V input source. I'll just order a $20 240V step up transformer and call it a day -- a little larger of a solution than I hoped (I'd prefer to have less equipment not more :) ) but enough to at least verify operation. Maybe later I'll go the DC wiring route.. OT - 120v to 240v step up recommendations
by Herb Johnson 02 May '21

02 May '21

OK, John, this discussion thread got my attention for some reason, although I'm not an Amiga 500 owner, maybe because I'm a decreed electrical engineer. But pardon me, your subject line really is distracting. Your real subject-line is "power supplies for Amiga 500" which is certainly on-topic. The real issue from reading your posts, is this. YOu have an Amiga 500 with some additions and accessories, which you want to power. Amiga 500's operate from an external AC to DC power supply, with a DC cable to the Amiga (this not being known to some of us). You are about to receive, an iCOMP brand power supply - but it's European with a 240V Euro style plug. Your question was/is: how do I run this in the USA? Turns out: you said you can contact the iCOMP producer - they have a WEb site, they have a forum - and you already asked them if the power supply cares about 60Hz versus 50Hz AC power. They said "no". So: you can ask them, about use of any common, AC step-up transformers to convert US AC power and AC outlets, to Euro AC power and AC outlets. But read on, you have other questions to ask (by my best guesses, I'm not an Amiga owner). Ask them about the "wattage", that being how those transformers and their power supply are rated. "wattage" is simply AC voltage (110, 240) times the desired current in Amps. If your Amiga consumes say 100 watts power, it needs about 1 Amp of 110V AC current through a transformer; or 1/2 Amp of 240V AC current (roughly). This is a *rating*, so you want transformers that can "deliver" more than 100 watts; not all of that will be necessary, that's OK. "100 watts" is an example, I don't know what you need. My own experience (and as posted) is that these step-up transformers are relatively cheap and common, available from eBay, Amazon, other online vendors; and from any shops that cater to foreign visitors to the United States. I see these in thrift stores sometimes (in New Jersey). They don't care about 50Hz or 60Hz, and your iCOMP vendor says his supplies also don't care. That's not totally correct but that's probably OK. The remaining issue is: does the iCOMP power supply, have sufficient DC power for your A500? (whatever other issues it may have as something you just bought). I ask because I did some homework, went to the iCOMP Web site, saw they had a forum, and saw this post: https://forum.icomp.de/index.php?thread/1444-ca-psu-won-t-power-up-my-a1200… The post says more or less: someone bought some new model of ICOMP's "CA-PSU", two units; they worked both in one Amiga 500 they have, but neither worked with an Amiga 1200 they have; they measure DC volts out at 4.85 on the failing units; but "My A500 PSU is pretty solid at 5.1V" (apparently a 3rd power supply). Hint: when DC power supplies can't deliver enough power, their voltage drops. just over 5 volts is what you want; under 5V is not desirable. So: this is where "wattage" comes in to play. With DC power, Plan A is you figure it out by measuring each DC voltage, each times the DC current consumed, and then add those wattages up. It's easy to measure DC current with a voltmeter; a little harder to measure current because you have to run power through your voltmeter (ammeter) to do so. But "plan B", would be to ask other Amiga 500 owners, if this wattage-stuff is a problem, what their Amiga 500's consume or their power-supply ratings, if they use this specific brand/model year supply (maybe in Europe?), ask icomp.de, etc. And so: pardon me, but your real post, is about "getting good power to your Amiga 500" - with whatever configuration you have, if it works or not right now - and whether this iCOMP unit combined with some AC step-up transformer will do the job or not. Of course it's your thread and your situation. Good luck. Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Workshop tool case
by jsalzman＠gmail.com 30 Apr '21

30 Apr '21

Someone at the April Workshop asked me about the stackable tool case I bring to the workshops. I forget who it was. It might have been Bill. This message is just an FYI. I realize we all have our personal preferences with these things. The one I have was a Christmas gift from a few years ago. I was shopping around for an additional stackable box for my "rolling tower" and I came across the item on the Home Depot website. If you are looking for a stackable tool case for hauling your gear around, you can find the entire three box set for only $130 at Home Depot. Weirdly enough, the same set is $170 at Amazon. RIDGID PRO Tool Storage System (3-Piece)-RIDGIDPRO3PCTSS - The Home Depot <https://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-PRO-Tool-Storage-System-3-Piece-RIDGIDPR…> I highly recommend it if you are looking for a wheeled means to move your gear around that can also be easily broken down for vehicle transport. In mine, I carry (among other things) a reworking station, parts drawer kit, cleaning supplies, paper towels, screwdriver sets, Rigol oscilloscope, workbench tool supplies (pliers, etc.) cables, adapters, tabletop worklight, spare parts, and more. For me, I wanted to carry more small parts to the workshop. For that, more of the compartmentalized smaller top boxes would be suitable for that. Those I found on Amazon at 2 for $70, which are stackable on top of my existing set of cases. Again, this is just an FYI. This set has worked well for me for a long time. When I saw how relatively affordable it was, I just wanted to share the information to those who were looking for a similar solution. Jeff Salzman

People staying overnight in Sandy area
by Jeffrey Brace 28 Apr '21

28 Apr '21

Anyone staying overnight in the Sanday Area, please put back the thermostat to the original setting and turn off the lights if you are the last person. They were left on Sunday night and it is costly to the caretakers of the building. Thanks! Also if anyone heard any suspicious activity while you were staying there, then please let me know. It seems that someone got into the outside kitchen trailer and was burning soy sauce and other food stuff they found in the pans outside. It is likely teenage vandals. Thanks again! ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Swap meet and workshop experience
by W. Bryan Caudle 27 Apr '21

27 Apr '21

As a noob to both the swap meet and workshops, I wanted to take a moment to express my thanks to the VCF team, volunteers, and participants for creating such a successful weekend. I truly had no idea what to expect for either event, but I was impressed with the turnout and enthusiasm that everyone shared. As others have shared, I am looking forward to future events. As far as suggestions go for the swap meet, I overheard conversations about having food trucks next time, and I agree with that effort. I also think including the HAM radio folks was a good move. I would encourage additional outreach to other similar audiences, one in particular might be the retro gaming community. I know that some folks might have a different opinion, but I think gaming and computing are inexorably linked as both sides have driven innovation on the other side. I also know that game collectors are passionate as well about their systems and many crossovers exist between gaming consoles and 8/16 bit micros in particular. Perhaps engaging some local retro game shops could help with promotion of the event, and maybe they might even want to participate as vendors to liquidate some excess inventory. I’m sure there are other ways to engage this community as well. I managed to sell some games and know other vendors did as well, so there was some level of demand and/or nostalgia at work there. Just something to think about. For me personally, I may not have sold as many items as I had hoped, but I had a variety of things and didn’t always have the best price points on certain items. I learned a lot from this and will be better prepared for next time. I was happy to pick up a couple of things (Apple IIc and Magnavox Odyssey2) along with some software and small bits from the free bins 😊. I could still see out of my car for the drive home so I’d call it a success. While this was my first computer swap meet, I am experienced with vendor fairs in other genres, and have sometimes found it to be helpful when the organizer tracks the vendor spaces. They can be assigned spaces, but don’t have to be. Just assign each vendor a number/sign/tag for their vehicle or space so that questions like “who was that commodore guy” can be more easily answered. For my workshop report, again I was overzealous in my expectations and brought along 3 projects. Thankfully I was able to make progress on one system, the Commodore Pet 2001. With great help and advice from Ian and others, it went from totally dead and disassembled, to a working power supply, working CRT, and mainboard that initializes and boots (with a corrupted display). Hopefully replacement video ram will correct that and leave me with a working pet. Again, the opportunity to work alongside others and share ideas was amazing and is such a nice change from doing these projects in isolation. It was good to see some familiar faces, and to make some new friends. I look forward to another event in the future, and thank you guys for giving a reason to get out of the house after being home for the past year!

Workshop HP recap
by Mike Loewen 27 Apr '21

27 Apr '21

I worked on the museum's HP 2117F system all weekend, with mixed results. My objectives were to install missing boards in the CPU, evaluate the 7912 hard disc (65MB), and install the RTE-6/VM OS, if possible. Summary: 1. Populated the 2117F with additional RAM and the HP-IB controller 2. The 2621P terminal works 3. The 7912 appears to work 4. RTE-6/VM wouldn't completely load 5. We need a cable for the terminal, and a 13181A board set for the 7970B The warehouse has two HP 2113E units, which I used for spare parts. I pulled the 12821A (HP-IB) controller board and a 12749H (256K Word) memory board from one, and a memory connector cable and 7970 tape boot ROM from the other. The museum system now has 1M Word of ECC RAM installed. I removed a duplicate 264X CTU (Cartridge Tape Unit) boot ROM and replaced it with the 7970 (9-track tape) ROM. The old ROM is taped to the inside of the front panel. We're still missing the 13181A two-board set for the 7970B tape drive in the system rack (it wasn't in the system when we got it). I will continue to look for a board set that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The I/O cage has a F.E.M. (Firmware Expansion Module) with the RTE6 OS/VMA/EMA and SIS (Scientific Instruction Set) ROMS installed. Also installed are the TBG (Time Base Generator), the 12821A (HP-IB) controller, and three BACI (Basic Asynchronous Communication Interface) boards to connect to terminals. The HP 2621P terminal in the museum also works, although the battery which maintains the settings is either dead or missing (I didn't look). It needs a cable to connect to the 2117F, which I may be able to make. I brought a cable from my terminal for testing. The 7912 hard disc appears to work. It spun up the first time, and passed its self-test. I was able to image the drive with a PC running the HPDir program, so I can inspect the data later on. I copied a RTE-6/VM image to the 7912, which I had prepared with the SimH hp2100 emulator for the specific configuration of the museum system. The bad news is that the 2117F would not successfully boot from the emulated drive (HPDrive) on the PC, or the 7912 drive. It would load from the drive, then go into what I was told is an "idle loop". Nothing was ever displayed on the terminal. I was able to load diagnostics from my HPDrive system, and output from the Diagnostic Configurator displayed on the terminal. I started running diagnostics, but ran out of time on Sunday and had to stop. My HP guru thinks that there may be a problem with the Time Base Generator, or the interrupt chain starting with the FEM. The next chance I get, I will run further diagnostics on the memory and suspect boards. The CPU is still available to run the "Cylon" demo program, keyed in from the front panel. Power for the system will be a concern when the hard drive is up and running. At one point, it tripped the breaker for the row of micros it was powered from. The HP cabinet has a power controller with a (I believe) 220V plug, which we may want to eventually use. It would eliminate the need to power on/off each unit individually. I'm a lurker here, but stopped by the swap meet because it's 3 miles from my home. Picked up a few little things -- total expenditure a big $16! But maybe I'll have stuff to sell by next year. The swap meet was very well organized. I appreciated how spread-out it was, as I'm not sure of my immunity to COVID-19 yet. (I actually had to leave the swap meet early to get my second shot today.) Great weather at the Swap Meet!
by Jeffrey Brace 26 Apr '21

26 Apr '21

The current prediction is for 63 degrees and cloudy. Sunday is lots of rain, so that works out well for both the swap meet and the repair workshop. It will be nice to see so many of you there. Haven't seen some of you in a while. I haven't seen some of you for 2 years or more! It looks to be a super successful swap meet and will be great to see all of you there. I hope that someone is selling a soldering iron. One of my friends will be coming to buy a good one. The Steering Committee and myself will be setting up starting at 6AM. Vendors please come at 7AM. Buyers come at 8AM. ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

My swap meet recap and much thanks!
by Ethan O'Toole 26 Apr '21

26 Apr '21

Whoooo what a weekend. I am sore! But what fun! Thanks to all that made it happen! It looked like the number of vendors doubled since last time! I went with the expectation of not needing anything. Came back with some more projects! I love projects! Time to start my digikey order :-) Weather was nice! It got warm during the day, and I had sunscreen but didn't use it. Feeling it now. But that is okay, Vitamin D is good and great. Nivea cream preventing any peeling. Sold things! It's always interesting to see what people are into. I had the pickup with the various Sun/SGI/PC/Amiga/AppleII oddities. Picked up the Amiga 1200 motherboard, ordering caps for it today. The sweet Apple IIci that is getting recapped very soon as well (and retrobright.) I love the form factor of the IIci and will run some midi sequencer stuff on it and maybe some games. Hopefully it will go out on a table during the next MAGFest Museum for the public to dawdle with. Bought a C128 that has issues from the box of broken C128s. I think it might be a project. It might kick my butt, we will see. I forgot to buy a power supply. Didn't dawn on me that it's different than C64, and the Amiga 500/600 PSUs are not to be plugged into it. I've fixed a C64 before so this will be fun getting to know the 128 a bit. Reel to reel tapes, will go on the machine soon. Intellivision.. have some games, it's a missing spot in my collection so that is awesome. Will clean it up. Beeee Seventeeeen Bomberrrrrr. A serial mouse for my luggable Pentium. I can finally try playing Secret of Monkey Island! My friend who came along scored an Apple montor, IBM PC floppy, AWE-32 sound card and some other odds and ends. He is mostly early IBM PC and Mac, was fun seeing him find goodies and he enjoyed it. I had like 3 friends bail and one who would only come if he could ride with me and the wagon was full. They missed out. I think the one was really just looking for some kind of ruby imac to complete his imac rainbow to match the sales poster, didn't see one. He should of told me in advance though. I think the event will continue to grow. I think the people that are into building older PC computers missed out -- there definitly was a lot for them there. Being my 2nd time, stuff I brought the first time that didn't sell sold this time. Don't get discouraged, and don't forget that the buyer audience will grow! Sunday I bought a part from a 35mm movie projector. It is soooo heavy. In real life it is way bigger than it looked on facebook marketplace. I need to clean some rust off of it and make some cables, and learn more about how to get it cleaned up and oil in it and see what kind of light source I can hack up. Leads on a 700 watt/1000 watt lamp + switchmode power supply would be good :-) Then Sunday night... I went to a friend's place. Him and his partner are moving back to Florida, away from the NoVA area. He wanted to give me first shot at buying his older video game stuff. Wasn't expecting what he had, no way I can give him anything less than in the thousands on it. Pretty crazy. Wasn't expecting it. On top of that rocket launch at work last night, so been supporting that. What a weekend. I need a weekend... for the weekend. Looking forward to System Source workshop!!!

The Swap Meet was great!
by Herb Johnson 26 Apr '21

26 Apr '21

I also attended. It was the first event I've been to, since March 2020. Of course, my last hamfest was the end of the 2019 season. I was pleased that everyone wore masks and mostly kept distance. A lot of people were glad to see me. I'm surprised sometimes, at who remembers me. Of course I was glad to see my VCFed friends there. Most of the tech was vintage computing from about 1980 forward, not much earlier. On older comp tech: one person showed me a DEC PDP-11 with an RX02 (8 inch floppy drive) they 'scored' that day, for a price too low to mention. A *single* S-100 card, a UVPROM burner, for too much money. Otherwise a mix of C64, Atari, Apple (II and Mac), and that class of stuff; a lot of ISA (Pentium and earlier PC compatible) and some PCI stuff. A little Sun SGI stuff. And a good amount of 10-25 year old PC stuff; plus IBM PC XT boxes. There's usually older stuff of my interests, buried amongst the PC stuff. a good number of CRT monitors from the Apple/Mac world. VCFed had a bunch of stuff to offer, excess vintage and some modern-donated items. I grabbed some Mac and Apple II class items. One TI 99/4A called to me, for its keyboard. Not very much test equipment, there were a few vendors. Usually at a hamfest, one can grab some older but useful and cheap test equipment. I grabbed a little modern stuff, a several year old AMD mobo with RAM and proc. Actually had trouble, finding a medium tower case for it. About embedded computers. Someone obtained an ISA-class industrial computer, a rack-mount box with passive backplane, about the size of a small air conditioner. *That* was industrial computing in 1995. There were a good number of book-sized embedded PC's, with flash-drive OS's, mostly to run some kind of service delivered by the Internet. Some micro ITX thingies. I grabbed a few of them to mess with. So I had a good morning there. I didn't linger to chat at length. That will come later. I'll make a Web page of the experience, with some photos. Fwd: [Coco] Van Load of COCO Stuff
by RETRO Innovations 24 Apr '21

24 Apr '21

I hate to bother folks and impose on good graces, but I do hate to see stuff get dumped, even if it's not a biggest of iron. Is there any chance someone nearby this location is feeling particularly generous and might consider grabbing these items? I have a couple folks near the area who can store, and I hoping to attend VFC-E and could drive my larger vehicle to pick the items up at that time. Jim -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [Coco] Van Load of COCO Stuff Date: Thu, 22 Apr 2021 07:22:24 -0400 From: Tom Seagrove <tjseagrove(a)writeme.com> Reply-To: CoCoList for Color Computer Enthusiasts <coco(a)maltedmedia.com> To: coco(a)maltedmedia.com We are moving house from upstate New York (close to Albany NY) to Charleston SC around mid May. I have piles and piles of COCO stuff including monitors, computers, disks, manuals, peripherals, etc and could nearly fill a large van with it. Long story short...I have no time to sell anything g or ship it here or there as I currently live in Charleston already (started a franchised coffee shop) and will be moving my family down after we close on our house sale next week. I DO NOT want all this stuff lost to history and looking for someone who would haul it away fir the good of the community. Would be a great haul for Glenside for use in an upcoming COCOFest auction as well. Reach out to tjseagrove at yahoo dot com if you would like to haul this away. Re: Lend VCF Commodore 1702 monitors for TV show (Jeffrey Brace)

Hi Jeff, You need to charge enough so that when they do go through with a deal, all the uncharged expense, overhead, time and process is worth the overall effort to the organization. I do understand that for a (mostly) volunteer organization, that it is very difficult to set a cost basis for uncharged time. One reason I cut way back on selling PCBs and kits to the vintage computer market is that I wanted more time to work on other projects and I was basically making below minimum wage on those products. If the organization thinks spending it’s energy on other projects would be more beneficial to the organization, you should consider raising the price or dropping the program entirely. Obviously, if the cost is too high for the prop houses, then they will go elsewhere on their own accord. regards, Mike Willegal

Looking for OG LaserWrtier Parts
by Jason Perkins 23 Apr '21

I probably should have sent this earlier... Does anyone coming to the swap meet have any original Apple Laserwriter parts they'd like to offload? I'm specifically looking for the I/O board, and the 36 pin cable which connects it to the DC control board. Thanks! -- Jason Perkins 313 355 0085
