by Christian Liendo 22 Apr '21

22 Apr '21

I have a small car and I am putting items on the list that I can carry to the event. I happen to have a rather large Apple III with a monitor and software and stuff I want to sell, but if no one wants it I won't bring it. I took a bunch of pictures, I'm not looking to sell the II+ but if you want make an offer and if I'm good I will let you know https://imgur.com/a/mM2BpG4 If no one wants it, then I am adding other stuff to the spreadsheet Please let me know

Swapmeet Repeater Talk-in
by jsalzman＠gmail.com 22 Apr '21

22 Apr '21

For those who are going to be attending the Swapmeet this Saturday, this is just a callout to those with Amateur Radio licenses. Since we opened up the event to include Hamfest related goods, we have secured the use of a local repeater for an event talk-in. If you, as a licensed HAM, would be able to help respond to any direction or info requests that come in, please let me know. The repeater is in the Asbury Park area, so it might be reachable with a 5w handheld. 147.045+ PL67 Thanks, Jeff Salzman

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Bag-o-chips sorting, storing, testing
by Bob Applegate 22 Apr '21

22 Apr '21

Do any of these testers perform tests at real speed or are they just a bunch of I/O ports that software writes to, then reads back the values to make sure they are correct? That would week out most bad chips, but I’ve had quite a few chips that passed those tests only to fail in a real circuit because they were no longer switching at full speed. ESD damage? Who knows. I ended up building some of my own testers where the chips under test are in a live circuit and their outputs are latched and compared to expected results. As far as RAM tests go, a common failure scenario is where they can pass memory tests but then not work in the real circuit because of timing. I like to have memory tests that run out of ROM and not use the RAM except as a test target, then use a RAM based tool so that the code running the test is also in the same RAM. Access to memory under test is really slow for any test running in ROM… lots of code execution in ROM, write a byte, lots of ROM code, write a byte, etc. By running the memory test in RAM then it is constant access to the device being tested. Some chips fail the latter case. Just my two cents. Bag-o-chips sorting, storing, testing
by Herb Johnson 22 Apr '21

22 Apr '21

I looked at the photos of the donated chips. Most of them are plastic-bagged and labeled when in quantity. Generally, "what to do" is to make a PAPER list of those tags and bags, and keep it with the box o' bagged chips. Then you have a box of bagged chips with catalog. And in this matter, don't use plastic boxes, they generate static. Paper is fine; there's antistat boxes made too but that's excessive in this matter. Problem solved. A couple exceptions: Problem is, all the 4000 series chips that are CMOS, are now damaged by plastic static electricity. I suggest that for the 4000 series, they 1) be rebagged in antistatic bags and 2) tagged as "static damaged". I'm serious. TTL and LS and other non-CMOS chips, leave them in their plastic bags. Some bags had mixed chips embedded in anti-static foam. That foam degrades over decades, so make sure it's not too old (crumbly, melting, etc.) Then rebag in anti-static bags. Label the bags as to kind. If antistat foam is kept from air and moisture, it lasts longer. But it does degrade and should be replaced every decade (!). about testing them. Most are not worth testing. Just use 'em and confirm in circuit that they work. Oscilloscope observation of inputs and outputs will confirm lack of damage at the pin level. If one needs known-good chips - don't use these! problem solved. In the discussion, it was suggested to 'store these at CDL'. Frankly, I suggest *donating them to CDL*. They will put them to best use, and know how to use them. If VCFed needs chips, I presume they already turn to CDL for assistance. If CDL doesn't want these chips, that's entirely their discretion; if they will store them for VCFed anyway, that is very kind of them. I am not in charge of CDL or VCFed so these are merely policy suggestions. best regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Lend VCF Commodore 1702 monitors for TV show
by Jeffrey Brace 21 Apr '21

21 Apr '21

Hello everyone, VCF was contacted by a TV show for a prop rental. They need 30 Commodore 64, 30 Commodore 1541 drives and 30 Commodore 1702 monitors. I already have the C64 and 1541 covered. We only have half of the monitors. Can anyone lend VCF monitors? They start filming in May, so it's likely that they will need them picked up within the next two weeks. They have shipping insurance for the monitors and use a professional shipping company. You will also get your portion of the rental fee. They will be needed for filming from Mid May to Mid August. If you can help, send me a private e-mail. Thanks! ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Someone donated a "bag-o-chips". If anyone is interested in sorting these, let me know. I also need ideas on how to store them for easy access. These would be available as parts for repair workshops for anyone. For the truly ambitious, you could test these chips. So Dennis and Dylan have been doing a great job filling in as docents in the VCF museum. It has been a great help for me to be able to take days off from the museum. However, they may be going to or back to college in September, so I will need more docents in the museum to replace them. Even if you come once a month, once every two months, it is helpful. 19 Apr '21

Would love some feedback on the Android Mobile Client before we but it in the Google play store. You may download the beta version at https://vcfed.org/forum/android/VCFedForum.apk. I welcome your feedback! There are relatively few options in building the client: I chose the default colors and fonts. Aubrey (who designed the winning T-Shirt Design) resized the logos. I did insert the advertising engine. The board will decide what if any ads are displayed. I did not enable the push notification option. The app installs with no special permissions. The IOS Client will follow shortly. It is a bit more of a process, and if your I-device is not jailbroken, it can only be installed via the Apple store. Bob Roswell

DVRA's swapmeet appears to run only from 11AM to 2PM. It also appears to be more of an intra-club event. Their posting states that "club members are welcome to set up." Those kind of swapmeets are common with radio clubs, where members can barter and deal amongst themselves. My local club does that once or twice a year. At least they don’t have a rain date the next day. But the good part is that they are 45 miles away, approximately! So I doubt if anyone is going to be making a trip to both of the swapmeets on the same day. I hope we’re not losing vendors and “customers” to them. Mike R. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Swap Meet Update
by Gregg Levine 13 Apr '21

Hello! Why Mike what are you selling? (Kidding, I looked at the entries.) In my cases besides those examples of logic, I am trying to find a very old by the standards of today, but certainly appropriate for this list, handheld. It was designed either by, or for, the OEM behind Seiko, sometime during the early part of the 1990s, about the time two things happened, one was the sudden importance of being able to collect data via handhelds, that of barcodes, and that those bounders at Microsoft released their MSDOS6.22 to the embedded device market. That market did nothing with that OS as they were waiting to evolve for a different OS altogether. It would have been traveling with an SDK for the methods, and even an appropriate laptop since the thing used PCMCIA cards for storage of data. I tried out one of them then, since I did not have the appropriate laptop and cards, and code, I wasn't able to hand it information to run with it, but now the <BLEEPING!> thing is now I do. Including a reason. Jeffrey, I'm thinking that if someone, any someone, does have the devices and wants to sell, I'm it, And the laptop with its software and so-forth. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." Swap Meet Update
by Jeffrey Brace 13 Apr '21

13 Apr '21

We have about 30 people signed up with about 40 spaces reserved. One guy is an electronics scraper and is taking 5 spaces and a 20 foot truck! He will be bringing all sorts of parts for machines mostly. I expect there to be more signups "at the gate", but at least many of you are already signed up ahead of time. So lots of excitement is going on in many corners of our realm about this event. 10 Day weather outlook shows partly cloudy and 64 degrees. Let's hope it stays that way. I will keep checking it as we get closer and the prediction gets more certain. Here is the info: http://vcfed.org/wp/vcf-swap-meet/ Here is the signup for vendors: https://forms.gle/kNCL8WVxTQcnw5nA6 I also ordered 3 more stickers. I hope everyone likes them. ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

semi OT: video digitizing & archive

> On Tue, Apr 6, 2021 at 12:40 PM Jeffrey Jonas wrote: > >> I need advice how to best digitize video, >> mostly standard def TV/NTSC of VCF events. Jeff didn't say exactly what his video sources were, but by definition "NTSC" means some analog-broadcast quality, composite video or NTSC channel 3/4 source. Say an old tape VCR or an old analog videotape camera etc. etc. Jeff didn't say what to digitize TO. He mentioned old-school proprietary TV to-hard-drive capturing systems. Jeff - suck any video from them, digitize it on playback, and throw. them. out. Someone close to me, does a lot of ATSC and cable-to-NTSC recording. The technology they use for capture, is Win 7 Win 8 class dual/quad CPU tower PC systems. OK? They use USB dongles for video capture; USB ATSC/NTSC tuners; or less convenient PCI card ATSC/NTSC tuners. Hauppauge produced a bunch of these, also Pinnacle. Buy them on eBay; they are obsolete, they are cheap. VLC is a pretty good media player software package. Less good for capture. You *do* plan to play these on a computer right? Save files on a computer and some mass-storage device, right? Right? A plausible path is: Composite video/audio; Hauppage USB-Live-2 dongle (to USB port); Win 7, 8, 10 box less than 10 years old; OBS video capture https://obsproject.com/; VLC video playback https://www.videolan.org/vlc/. If your source is tape-video with only NTSC channel 3/4 out, then get a USB tuner dongle. Again; ebay, cheap, obsolete. Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950 does NTSC and ATSC. Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-850 does NTSC. Of course, ATSC and an antenna lets you watch and record over-the-air content. 720 and 1080 resolution too. If you are a Linux-fan, fine. Same hardware, same software suggestions. Please use a computer box less than ten years old with muscle. https://www.linuxtv.org/ regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey in the USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

Slightly OT - CDL is -restocking the parts drawers in the Makerspace. Other then the resistors and capacitors we normally stock, are there small parts (IC sockets??) and IC that should be in inventory to support the VCF workshops? Ordering hardware as well, so if there are fasteners need to be there, let us know. https://www.facebook.com/compdecon/posts/3824364321010417

> [NON-Text Body part not included] > I don’t have much experience at this, > has anybody in the group used a mini disk (MD) as recording media for > saving programs and loading programs? I was a big minidisc user, mainly for dumping stuff from my SGI Indigo into a minidisc deck over coax digital then using it in the car. I actually have a MDS-E10 on my want list for VCF ;-) When you say store programs, do you mean like dumping cassette files from 8bit computers to minidisc? The original format was a ~130MB MO disc that usually held compressed audio using a codec called ATRAC. ATRAC 1 didn't get a lot of love which hurt the format in the USA but ATRAC 3 and 4 and stuff were fine. There was a later HDMD disc that holds like 600MB and I believe there was a computer drive for that where you could store data. They are rare. Not sure if there was a direct computer storage drive for the 130MB discs? Because Sony also owns a record label they are weak, and hurt the format by not making it better for piracy. Computer connected decks that could easily dump mp3s to them would have been really popular. They had the NetMD stuff but I think it was just a USB sound card that dumped it, and I don't know if it had easy titling or not. Neat format though. The discs are cute. - Ethan

Need computers for prop rental

A TV show is looking for particular props for their show. Some of them we have, some of them we don't. Even the ones that we have, we probably don't have in the quantity that they need. Some items that we don't have: (x20) Typewriters (x3) Microfiche Readers (x30-40) 1992 era computers & monitors w/keyboards & floppy disk drives, matching (x20-30) separate set of 1992 era computers & monitors w/keyboards & disk drives, matching If you have these or know where I can find them, then please let me know. Attached are some pictures of 80s and 90s offices that they want to recreate as well as a 90s computer example. WTB: ISA 16bit XMS Board
by Alexander Jacocks 08 Apr '21

08 Apr '21

Hello, Does anyone have a 16bit ISA XMS card that they're willing to part with? I'd prefer one that can take at least 4MB of RAM, but beggars can't be choosers. I'd also prefer SIMM slots (32 or 72 pin), but again, I'll take what I can get. This is for a 286-12, so I'd like the capability to run with zero wait states. I'll be at the swap meet, as well. - Alex

I need advice how to best digitize video, mostly standard def TV/NTSC of VCF events. I have several USB dongles that take composite and S-video. They may be adequate, but I don't know what one's really best. I also have several DVR (digital VCR): Tivo, Sonic Blue replay-tv. Did those have good front-ends or was most of the attention to the subscription service? I know they need to be "jail broken" to work like VCRs. There's no big red "just record NOW!" button :-( thanks -- Jeff Jonas
