Non-IBM CD drive on PS/2
by Richard Cini 15 Mar '21

15 Mar '21

Any PS/2 experts on the list? I have a question about getting non-IBM stuff working on a PS/2 Model 80 running PC-DOS 4.01. Has anyone gotten a non-branded SCSI CD-ROM Drive working with a SCSI-based PS/2? I’m using the PCem emulator which, if you don’t know it, is an emulator like DOSBox but emulates specific PC-compatible brands and machines. So, I can do a Compaq DeskPro/386 or an IBM PS/2 and it emulates all the quirks. It’s pretty neat. I had both of those machines when I was in college so it’s a great step back. Anyway, I’ve learned about ADF’s and stuff, so I have a pretty good working system at this point — a PS/2 Model 80 with an IBM SCSI storage controller (it’s the “SCSI controller with cache” model), 312mb drive, and a SoundBlaster card. The only thing that doesn’t work is the emulated CD-ROM. PCem emulates a generic SCSI CD that I have assigned to SCSI ID 6 and I’ve run the Reference Disk. I’ve read that if it’s not an IBM-branded CD, there are issues with getting it working. I’ve loaded the ASPI4B SCSI driver and the IBMCDROM driver (with the “/i “ and “p:2” params, but it barfs on loading. If anyone can give me a push, that’s be great. I can add a CD definition to the source code, but I’d need info from a real IBM CD drive like the ID string, serial number, etc. Thanks! Museum Report 3/10, 3/13, 2021
by Jeffrey Brace 14 Mar '21

14 Mar '21

Wednesday 3/10 Bill Inderreiden was docent and he had a decent number of high interest visitors which is good because Wednesday are typically slow. Saturday 3/13 Dennis was docent and he had some high interest visitors. One child loved the C64 and The Print Shop printout. It seems like the warmer weather is bringing out more visitors. I will be doncent today. And then for dinner I will have some nice pie. Happy Pi Day everyone! Looking for some PhoneNet / AppleTalk adapters
by Jason Perkins 14 Mar '21

14 Mar '21

A few years ago I sold off all the AppleTalk adapters I had, thinking I’d never need / use them. Well... I’m looking for a few (2-3) phonenet adapters. If someone has one with a DB9 instead of the minidin I’d be interested - if you have one with a DB25 I’d be very interested! Thanks, -J -- Jason Perkins 313 355 0085 Sent from my iPhone

Jason, Unfortunately, I've only got one DB9 phonenet adapter. I've got a couple of mini-DIN ones I can let you have, and I can loan you the DB9 one, if that helps. I'm around this weekend too. -Jonathan

I downloaded a zip of all of the kickstart disks, I have a catweasel. I should be able to make an ADF file. The system churms a little on the kickstart disks I have, but they are of unknown status. Massive Vintage Apple Computer Magazine Lot - $700

I know someone here may want this. I'm not selling these, but I put all the info https://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/sys/d/danbury-massive-vintage-apple-com… 117cc2c5e6ab3c4ea143cfde3d30889e(a)sale.craigslist.org Magazines are bagged and boarded and stored upright for purpose of posterity. Magazines are bagged and boarded and stored upright for purpose of posterity. I have them stored in cardboard filing drawers which I will gladly include in the purchase making them easier to transport and ensure they stay organized. There are no major issues or concerns with the magazines in regards to water damage, mildew, torn pages, falling apart, etc. All of them have been very well preserved. $700 for the lot which breaks down to roughly $3 a magazine, which is relatively fair when you take into account that some of the "magazines" are more like books. MUD 1980 article
by Andrew Diller 11 Mar '21

11 Mar '21

If you didn't come across this, it's worth the read: https://if50.substack.com/p/1980-mud Wasn't around for this, but I did do my MUDding in the very early 90's - i recall my housemates and I had a local 10b2 lan and an on-demand modem dialup so we all could play on our own computers down in the basement. We frequented NannieMUD and many others. That was when your ISP would give you real routable ip address and it was great fun. If anyone else is interested- i'm putting out feelers for VCF East 2021 (I'm banking on it being in person!) - and running some vintage muds on vintage UNIX systems, connected up to each other with lots of terminals for interactive play. Message me off list if this is something you are interested in ideating on. (hint-> Jameel, Perkins, Ethan(s) and others from UNIXTOWN...) -andy

VCF West 2021 Call for exhibitors
by Jeffrey Brace 11 Mar '21

11 Mar '21

Hello folks, VCF West is scheduled, as always, for the first weekend in August. That will be *the 7th and 8th* this year. We have the *full second floor* of the *Computer History Museum* booked! As of right now things are looking fairly good for an in-person show. The CHM is projecting that they should be open in July, vaccine distribution is accelerating and should approach universal availability within the next few months and, overall, signs of pending normalcy are on the rise. Nothing is certain, of course, but I am cautiously optimistic that we can have a show so I would like to start planning for it. With that in mind, exhibit registrations are open at VCF West Exhibit Registration <http://vcfed.org/wp/festivals/vintage-computer-festival-west/vcf-west-exhib…> Please consider signing up to show off your favorite toys! We have a lot of space to fill and I'm hoping that there is a lot of pent up demand since we were purely virtual last year. Speaking of virtual, we will be doing a hybrid show. The Hahn Auditorium will be used for live talks when we have speakers in the building, but we'll run video presentations of exhibits, talks and classes in between those. If you are out of town or can't attend in person please consider submitting a video! Heck, we could use your video even if you're planning on being there in person! As always we are actively seeking speakers and classroom instructors for the show. If you are able, or if you know of someone who would be a good fit, please let me know. Also, as usual, we're always looking for volunteers to help out with show preparations and on show days. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns and please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. Thank You and All the Best, Erik Klein erik(a)vcfed.org -- Jeff Brace ========================================= Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

Repair workshop 3/6 & 3/7
by Jeffrey Brace 11 Mar '21

11 Mar '21

About 15 people came this month. Lots of interesting stuff repaired. Ian was able to fix the museum Xerox by swapping out a video board from our spare Xerox. So now it is working in the museum. I know that Jeff Salzman worked on testing out Commodore 64 related hardware. It was a special treat to see him use Magic Voice, a voice synthesizer for the C64. What I didn't know, but he did, was that Commodore made cartridges such as Gorf and Wizard of War will have voice enabled when you plug them into the Magic Voice! They resemble the arcade versions. Maybe others can fill in what they worked on. Keep the lights on at InfoAge (GoFundMe fundraiser)
by Jeffrey Brace 09 Mar '21

09 Mar '21

Vintage Computer Federation has initiated a fundraiser for InfoAge operating expenses. As with many museums across the country InfoAge was hit hard by lower visitor numbers, yet the expenses keep coming. For those that don't know, VCF leases space for our museum and warehouse from InfoAge. So we are looking to help them as it benefits us and all the other museums under the InfoAge umbrella to stay in business. Our doors stay open as a result of the volunteers' efforts, the donations made by visitors to InfoAge, as well as grants and other fundraising efforts. As you can imagine, the long closures, limited capacity and public concerns that have come as a result of COVID-19 have seriously hurt our ability to raise money and continue to maintain and improve the Camp Evans Historical Landmark Site and the museums that occupy it's spaces. Starting with the resident non-profits, we are pooling our resources to keep the doors to our home here at Camp Evans/InfoAge open and continue to share this wonderful place with the public. But we need your help to make it through these difficult times. ANY donation will help make an impact. How will your donation help? Your donations will assist InfoAge in paying for daily operating expenses (like keeping the electricity on!) repairs and maintenance and installation of new exhibits just to name a few! Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us. We set a goal of $10,000 and you can donate by going here: https://gofund.me/f72ab5f0 Jeff Brace ========================================= Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

Another successful repair workshop 3/6 & 3/7 2021
by Jeffrey Brace 08 Mar '21

08 Mar '21

So about 15 people showed up to the repair workshop. Most were in the CDL building and the rest were in 9032-A, the museum and the warehouse. Ian was able to repair the Xerox in the museum by swapping out a board from another Xerox. He will try to repair the original board later. In addition Ian fixed a number of other items that hopefully he will mention here. Jeff Salzman tested all sorts of Commodore hardware which was fun watching especially him using the Magic Voice hardware and then realizing that Gor and Wizard of War both had digitized voices when the cartridges were plugged into the Magic Voice. Sounded just like the arcade versions. Jason Perkins tested and fixed the Diablo printer as well as a Apple Profile. Dmitry had success at the very end of the workshop, but I don't remember what he was working on. Corey and I started prototyping a new backdrop for the artifact carts that I hope everyone will like. Can everyone else chime in on what they were working on? Next event is the swap meet & repair workshop on April 24. Repair Workshop Report 2021-02-06 & 07
by Jeffrey Brace 06 Mar '21

06 Mar '21

Sorry for the late report, but been busy the last few weeks. This is from last month's repair workshop. So Saturday 2/6 we had about 10 to 15 people come. Lots of great stuff got accomplished. Dean worked on the TRS-80 Model 1 and will be installing a Gotek into it during the next repair workshop. Andy recorded some great video with Bill Dromgoole on the Univac. This was one of the best workshops, but I didn't write down all the details. Maybe others can fill in what we did last month. Sunday 2/7 was a lot less people because of the snowstorm, but 4 brave souls rode out the storm before returning home. I was able to count and fold all the t-shirts and polos so they will be for sale at the VCF Swap Meet on April 24. Wow, do we recall the 'Junk yard' (meant lovingly) with rose colored glasses? I'll venture a guess that I started going to TCF in 83, though I did hear of it in '80. I remember all the good junk (hence the junk yard moniker) and recalled drooling over many things from terminals to complete racks of PDPs and the spare parts were incredible. But each year more and more of the retired equipment dwindled and eventually retired equipment was sold to retired equipment businesses who sold it back to those who retired it in the first place because some of the systems couldn't be replaced*. Say late 80's By that time the PC revolution had taken over and everyone had to have a PC. I think my friends and I must have purchased 12 complete systems from parts and spent the rest of the weekend assembling them for others. By this time the Junk Yard became the Scrap Yard as the rest of the good stuff wasn't showing up as TCF had become more PC centric. And as others have noted most of the good stuff was traded/sold before things really opened up. Then TCF moved to MCC (Mercer) for a while (got a nice Z80 starter kit and Applied Micro Z80 emulator for $10). Then it moved to MCC (Middlesex) then Ken Gordon (?) took over, then back to The College of NJ (College name changed in there somewhere). Now it's mostly the talks and a really small swap meet. Now having bad mouthed history I do thing that VCF could do something like this with VCF East (or West or xxx). Won't be the glory days of the late 70's and early 80's but it would be a yearly pilgrimage for the faithful. :-) I have a lot of fond memories of TCF. Even a time when waiting in line an some bruiser went on a rant about waiting in line behind these 'geeks'. I threatened to adjust his criminal records for minor park and speeding to felonies and them losing the records. That shut him up, And no I couldn't do any of those things but society thought I could. ;-) * - A concrete company retained DEC, DECnet terminal servers and LAST until the mid OO's, -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies

Yea, I sure miss those days. I was a vendor at TCF for over 40 years starting in 1978. TCF was the highlight of my year and preparing for it was my version of "getting ready for the BIG GAME". I always took the Friday before off to test, label and load the truck to the roof. I sold & got a lot of bargains over the years and had a great time meeting fellow enthusiasts. The flea market really got killed when TCF moved to March and the "flea market" got moved to a conference room. I continued to sell at TCF but in 2019 they told the vendors they had to be packed up & out of the room by 3pm. With 4 tables of stuff, I had to start packing at 2pm. I vowed that would be my last TCF which proved to be a moot point since I moved to Tucson, AZ in early 2020. I am glad to see that others have similar fond memories of the TCF flea market. TCF! Man I miss it sorely, at least how it used to be! I attended first I think around 1995/1996 at Mercer County Community College, and I was blown away. So so so many good memories, so many things bought and sold. Having my friends sleep over so we could wake up at 4am and start the trek from the Philly burbs, driving my Dads Ramcharger loaded with a trailer full of stuff, and coming up with a trailer full of new stuff. Some of the new stuff came from the dumpsters, which had no less than 5 people in them at most times LOL, myself included. If anyone has pics of the former TCF, I wonder if we can set up a shared album they can be uploaded to? I'd love to see some. I have I think a couple pics, but literally just that.I remember the crowds coming in, I think they'd bus people in from Manhattan and other areas, and they had a "locker" area where people could stash their buys. I remember seeing all sorts of crazy stuff in the pile including 21" CRT monitors at the time. I also still have the TCF book from 1995 (and a few others). If it rains on the 24th, then that will be the repair workshop, if it doesn't then the repair workshop will be on the 25th. I will just need to confirm that we can use the CDL area. 9032A isn't available on the 24th due to a Shipwreck museum symposium. It is also Marconi Day at InfoAge on the 24th. [OT] Would anyone like a Power Mac G5 1.8 PCI-X Single Processor Machine?
by Alexander Jacocks 03 Mar '21

03 Mar '21

All, I have been offered, very cheaply, a nice condition Power Mac G5, with a single 1.8 GHz G5 CPU, and PCI-X expansion. It has some RAM installed, not sure how much. Would anyone like it? If so, I’ll grab it, and bring it with me to NJ, this weekend. - Alex

Hi Ian, I sent you some pix of a Zenith TV I mentioned at the last workshop. I think my emails might be getting bit-bucketed however; can you check your spam folder and let me know if it got through? And if the TV looks like something you can use, I’ll bring it up this weekend. -Jonathan

the best news of the day: the Secret Life of Components!
by Jeffrey Jonas 02 Mar '21

Just the videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/timhunkin1/videos The Secret Life of components. A series of eight guides for designers and makers by Tim Hunkin https://makezine.com/2021/02/26/secret-life-of-machines-tim-hunkin-is-back-… Secret Life of Machines Tim Hunkin Is Back With New Web Series The Secret Life of Machines alum Tim Hunkin is set to unveil a new web series focusing on explaining basic components, called The Secret Life of Components. Each roughly 45 minute episode will focus on a different technology, from glue to switches to bearings and more. Hunkin says, "I now learn a lot from watching practical YouTube videos and realize they can teach the sort of informal tips that used to be part of traditional apprenticeships." Part of what made The Secret Life of Machines so compelling was the way that Hunkin, like many great teachers, combined his engineering knowledge with strong storytelling. It'll be exciting to see what he has in store for the new series. The Secret Life of Components debuts March 4 on Hunkin's YouTube channel.

Here are the printers I fought at VCF: Anyone familiar with the Diablo? It powers up, is very clean but the print-head won't budge. I wonder if there is a lock-down for shipping or something I couldn't find... https://i.imgur.com/mZkjmcx.jpg <https://i.imgur.com/mZkjmcx.jpg> - Diablo https://i.imgur.com/CrcOmbA.jpg?1 <https://i.imgur.com/CrcOmbA.jpg?1> - okidata w error https://i.imgur.com/wdOMbpN.jpg <https://i.imgur.com/wdOMbpN.jpg> - okidata test print - it would print those few lines and then error.

We had one of those on our VAX in college. One year, I whipped up a little program that would use the Hershy fonts and the dot plotting mode on the printer to do banners in callegraphic Old English. I kind of treated it as a one-off, but a couple years later someone came up to me and asked how to use the program. That was the beginning of me learning that your throw-away one-offs are the ones that everyone will want and care about, and the ones you labor over focusing on the details of the craft are the ones no one will ever pay attention to. If I understand your question correctly, no, I've never seen nor heard of a large printer with a DE9 connector. However, lots and lots of them have RS232 serial ports, but on standard DB25 connectors. That's how LSSM's big Genicom is interfaced; it's connected to a DECserver terminal server so that multiple systems can access it. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

Greenbar print

Can you please send technical details of the printout? Ascii file? Characters per line? Is the printout file ready and all they need is a print or does thenoutput need to be formatted first? I recall you said it was roughly a hundred or so total pages? Maybe someone near the museum can look for the two DECwriter III's that might still be around the warehouse, or some other wide carriage printer there. If you put a new ribbon on one of those and attach to an old pc running word perfect paginated to 132 character lines you could at least try to print this at infoage. I bet there is some green bar in the warehouse When the file and details are available I would be happy to at least try to do of it too. Bill
