Bringing out Capsela Robot again!
by Jeffrey Brace 25 Nov '20

25 Nov '20

After running shows and helping with shows, I get to do my own exhibit and actually enjoy someone else's show! :-D I was asked to do an exhibit for the Virtual World Of Commodore 2020 on December 5. I was specifically asked to do my C64 Capsela Robot exhibit that I did about 5 years ago for World Maker Faire. I agreed. It will be fun to bring up this project again and to build a new robot. I may also show off in more detail the 80's Bedroom Exhibit in our museum which features a C64 and The Print Shop. If anyone is interested in doing a Commodore exhibit, sign up here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc7Wr7ajcAV-t6iswLy1CcnabRQkAjYght… More info on the show: https://www.tpug.ca/world-of-commodore/world-of- commodore-2020/ Here are pictures from the last time that I did the exhibit: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Wus7obefZBDws1woX5p1szfNQZUXvLgq?us… -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Wanting to get into s100 homebrewing
by Jeff Galinat 25 Nov '20

Hi Randy, Good eye! I built it from a NOS bare board. It almost worked the first time. I had a tiny solder bridge between 2 traces which wasn’t that hard to do as there is no solder mask. It is one of the few S-100 boards I had built that wasn’t solder masked. I guess I got complacent. I also have the BYT-8 front panel board but I have been looking for the enclosure for years. I may wind up getting one fabbed down the road if I don’t find one. VIC-20-Hyper-Expander
by Christian Liendo 24 Nov '20

24 Nov '20

I saw this on facebook and I figured some people would be interested https://github.com/svenpetersen1965/VIC-20-Hyper-Expander The Hyper Expander is a cartridge for the Commodore VIC-20, which provides up to 16kB EPROM and up to 32kB RAM. It is a super-set of the original Commodore VIC-1211A Super Expander, which provides only 3k of RAM. The Hyper Expander can hold up to two 27C512 EPROMs, the 8k memory bank of both EPROMs (A13...A15) can be selected for both EPROMs. The same selection applies to both of them. Each EPROM (IC1 and IC2) can be jumpered to two chip selects. That is BLK2 or BLK5 for IC1 and BLK1 or BLK3 for IC2. The RAM is a 32kB 62256 type static RAM. The memory is divided into four banks. A 74LS148 decodes the active chip selects to one of each memory bank. The used chip selects can be configured with JP5 and JP4.

Back then, it was on the bench at work (and IIRC, they paid $250 for it new, in 1981-82). When the company folded in 1993, I bought out the stock and bench and continued to support our (few remaining) customers for the next 1-2 years. I've replaced the heater once and the thermostat unit once in those 36 years. I could use a new strain-relief grommet on the cord but it's been fine for years with gentle handling. About the only thing that could replace this battleship is a nice Hakko with a sheaf of SMT tips. -ethan

Dang they don't make them like they used to ...
by Neil Cherry 19 Nov '20

19 Nov '20

So my POS 35 year old Weller workstation that I got out of the back of the Computer Shopper for $25 shipped has developed a crack in the heat guard sleeve. I mean really I spent good money on this and it only lasted 35 years. I want a refund! ;-) I think I can fix the crack with some heat shrink tubing. BTW if anyone has ever seen my Weller they'd wonder why I still have it. It looks like someone took a BB gun to it. It's looked that way for the last 35 years. I do need to take some epoxy to a few things to fix some of the broken parts but it still works and the tip is good (small chisel tip). The tip was bought new when I got the Weller. I think it cost more than the Weller. I also have the original tip. It was a bit worn but usable. I wonder if my Hako will last that long. Might I never use it. ;-) -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] With New COVID Restrictions, Is Museum Affected?
by Jeffrey Brace 17 Nov '20

17 Nov '20

Bill, It's not likely that InfoAge Museum will shutdown unless ordered by the Governor. Apart from a few occasions that brought in a lot of people at one time such as scheduled boy scout tours or a Jewish holiday there haven't been too many visitors at one time. Visitors have trickled in at a slow pace over the last few months. Also the protocols that we have been using already limit people to 10 at a time in a museum room. So even with the 10 person per room restrictions, InfoAge (and VCF) are already following them and have been following them since re-opening in June. I would expect that unless there is a order or some problem, InfoAge won't shutdown. They are already following strict protocols such as limiting the number of people, requiring everyone to wear a mask, taking temperatures at the front desk, taking down contact tracing info, hand sanitizer, etc. It is up to IA to make the call. In the VCF museum we are already limiting people to 10 inside our museum and following all protocols for mask wearing, temperature taking, and sanitizing. Festivus and Covid-19
by Jeffrey Brace 16 Nov '20

16 Nov '20

So I'm currently monitoring the spike in cases in NJ and in the region as well as the guidelines. As of today Festivus is still on. The current guidelines are: ******** General indoor gatherings must be limited to 25 people or 25% of a room's capacity -- whichever number is lower. All attendees at indoor gatherings must wear face coverings and stay six feet apart. ******** The plan that I have will follow these guidelines. If the guidelines change to something less (i.e. no more than 10), then I will have to cancel. I will make a call by December 7. Festivus is scheduled for December 12 & 13. Even if I cancel it, there is no reason why I can't reschedule it to July or any other month. It might even work out better for some people. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

Micromint MPX-16 technical manual
by Richard Cini 15 Nov '20

All – I found a Micromint MPX-16 motherboard in my attic yesterday. I know back in 2002, I traded away one in the enclosure and it had the technical manual, but strangely I didn’t scan it for some reason. Now, I’d like to see if this board I have works. The magazine article gets most of the way there, but what’s missing is the DIP switch settings. I’ve made some guesses based on the source code for the ROM, but the actual manual would help. Bitsavers doesn’t have it, unfortunately. Thanks! Rich -- Rich Cini http://www.classiccmp.org/cini http://www.classiccmp.org/altair32

That’s very cool! I had not looked recently to see how much it had jumped since VCF East Virtual happened (a number of older videos were boosted as a result of the event, which would make sense) One can only hope that as subsequent videos are online for as long that they can also see views rise and help increase VCFs visibility! This is certainly a huge boost in that department. It’s awesome when a series of events come together to make an even more awesome event! The original idea of Ken Thompson being suggested to you, the fact that Ken Thompson was in the state, that Brian was also available, that was a once in a lifetime congruence that everyone benefited from. Kudos for being in the right place at the right time and being able to bring it all together! With that many views of the existing video, one can only imagine how many views the video would have at this point had they been able to continue talking! Fortunately we’ve got the conversation they did have on video for posterity’s sake and can relish in this once in a lifetime keynote event. Very cool the video has hit the 100k view mark! Tony

Moving forward
by Tony Bogan 11 Nov '20

11 Nov '20

Recent discussions have really been liberating, with details many people were unaware of finally being brought to light and pent up feelings and opinions finally being aired. It’s been long overdue. As such, I personally am really psyched moving forward. Speaking as someone who may not even be on the Steering Committee in another month, I couldn’t be more excited for the future of VCF. Some thoughts and extra details I’d like to share. Adam has said from the start of the SC that he wanted his seat to be one of the first up for election. Now that he’s moved to South Carolina, he isn’t running for election (he’s already explained his feelings previously) Knowing what some people were told about me from former management and what others thought (and one expressed recently in comments about the state of the vcf “business”) I insisted mine be the other of the first two. While I’ve enjoyed this first year of the SC, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming elections I’m both excited for the future and to see what the SC does next, with or without me on it, secure in the knowledge that I will continue to do everything I can to help VCF grow as I did before I was on the SC and while I’ve been on it. Doesn’t hurt I have the utmost respect for the other people nominated for the two seats and am often in awe of their knowledge and expertise every time I speak with them or see them at workshops. Win, lose or draw for me retaining my seat on the SC, the future looks awesome indeed. We’ve set up a dedicated fund for warehouse improvements, have a working yearly budget with the ability to request additional allocations from the Board for the museum, have cultivated a working relationship and repaired burned bridges with no less than three other vintage computer museums (two on the east coast and a new relationship with one overseas) started the process of getting estimates for repairing and redoing the warehouse, appointed a liaison to Infoage and the township of Wall, and a whole slew of other things that just weren’t possible or feasible in the past. One of the benefits of having a group of people working towards a common goal with the ability to make decisions and act upon them. We don’t always all agree of course, but with a system in place and a framework (now published for all to see) within which to work, it’s a pleasure to be a part of. The difficulties faced by Infoage, along with museums around the world, and the financial and political aspects were touched upon by Mike Brutman in another thread. Those things are always on our minds along with a dozen other things on any given day! We also have a great working relationship with the other groups at infoage, in particular CDL and The Military Technology Museum of NJ. We have a full time social media coordinator (our social media accounts have never been so alive!) But we need more. We need help at the museum and working in the warehouse. We need help getting the artifacts in the museum and warehouse up and running (never in the 6+ years I’ve been here have we ever had literally almost every machine in the museum running) and just did our first “VCF Artifact” workshop to help achieve that goal. We need ideas for new exhibits (we now change some things up regularly in the museum to give visitors a reason to come back again and again and not see the same exact things every time) We need ideas for improving our current events and adding new ones (like the first swap meet we just did. The first of many that is!) The up front, honest, no holds barred discussion of late was a true breath of fresh air. People don’t need to feel stifled or belittled for having an idea, even a hair brained one! It’s not about letting the inmates run the asylum, it’s about having somewhere to go and know you’ll be listened to And your thoughts, ideas, concerns, whatever won’t just be dismissed out of hand. Members now have five people they can reach out to, and know the person they reach out to will bring their comments to the SC for consideration. Sometimes the answer will still be “no,” but it will be a consensus decision that was given consideration and discussion by a group of people, not dismissed without a second thought. THAT’S what the Steering Committee is there for, and THAT is one of the reasons the Steering Committee was created (only one reason, but an important one!) Tony Sent from my iPhone

These sorts of discussions are why many of us aren’t more actively involved. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Ken Thompson video

Wow Bill, that was amazing. Let's correct a few things. There are plenty of user groups and clubs both in the Pacific Northwest (where I live) and in Silicon Valley (where Erik lives). For you to ask people to think about "why is there no club out west or north west?" is absurd. (For the record I was active at the local Seattle Retrocomputing Society.) Nobody tricked Evan into giving up his board position. He wanted a paid position in line with what an executive director does - day-to-day operations of the museum in NJ. While an important position, it is not a board level position. So nobody should be surprised if they give up a board position and then don't have a say on board level decisions. I wasn't on the board at the time but this is pretty obvious. What is this business of which you speak? The one where the most of us pay our own travel expenses and volunteer dozens to hundreds of hours a year? The one that we also actively hustle to get donations for? That doesn't sound like a business to me; it sounds like a labor of love. We formed the steering committee to give local people who volunteered a museum more autonomy and oversight over the things they were directly working on. Other people wanted a voice and a say in what happened there. It couldn't be bottlenecked or controlled by one person anymore. This is how you grow and scale an organization. The idea that this was some nefarious plot to have somebody else get rid of Evan is insane, and it fits with the rest of this bullshit conspiracy theory crap you are spinning. We don't control all of vintage computing, nor do we want to. I'm not sure if you've been paying attention or you just like to act like you know what is going on, but we've been freely advertising the other VCF events both in the US and Europe - go look at the website. That was actually a big change after Evan left the board - Evan was a lot more likely to demand that people shouldn't be using the VCF name, which was not a valid demand to make. We don't own the IP. The current national board has been a big believer in a rising tide lifts all boats; we actively cross promote the other groups. "The new VCF West and northwest shows were formed after Brutman and Erik Klein joined the board and they pretty much own them through the board." Fact: the VCF West event was resurrected before I joined the board. VCF PNW came after I joined in 2018. I don't own PNW in any form, through the board or otherwise. I'm just the slob volunteer who launched it and did the majority of the organization for two years. Do you really think I benefited financially or I own anything as a result of having run VCF PNW in 2018 or 2019? What exactly did I get from it? What is this ownership that you refer to? "I suppose no one cares about the breakdown of east vs west revenue, but suffice it to say it ain't even" I don't even know what to say about that, other than it demonstrates such a lack of critical thinking that it is mind boggling. Yep, East has more revenue. No question. But let's look at where the revenue goes. VCF PNW ran in 2018 and 2019 and was two weeks away from running in 2020 before COVID-19 killed it. VCF PNW made a modest amount of money both years, and *all* of the money went back to the org. So sure, East has more revenue than PNW. But not a single dime of any money has stayed in the Seattle area. It all went back to VCF to support the museum, the web hosting, the workshops, etc. It certainly isn't even .. it all goes back to the VCFed, the nexus of which is the museum in NJ. Erik's story with West is going to be similar. Heck, even in 2020 after all of the expenses for VCF PNW were mostly sunk and the event was cancelled *I still managed to hustle* and turn a profit for the org. I had 200 t-shirts made up that I couldn't sell in person. I've logged over 100 hours invoicing and mailing t-shirts, raising money that probably would have been written off because we didn't have in-person events this year. And we still managed to get most exhibitors and volunteers a free t-shirt for their efforts. The t-shirts raised awareness for VCFed and also helped keep the lights on this year when our other sources of revenue dried up. That's not bad when you consider what happened to actual functioning museums with real payrolls that had to close this year. When I launched VCF PNW in 2018 I explicitly did not charge a gate fee, and it was the first event that we ever planned to operate that way. We explicitly wanted the event to be accessible to spread the word and raise awareness. It succeeded and we did it again in 2019. Does this sound like an evil corporation trying to wrest control away from the people who built it? Moving the museum? Another conspiracy theory. The only talk about ever moving the museum happens when we are talking about the leaky warehouse roof or the viability of InfoAge as a site. Nobody has ever even thought about relocating unless we get forced out of InfoAge or have to flee because they can't maintain the site anymore. Bill, your time on the VCFed board was spent criticizing and throwing rocks, but never actually doing anything. Stop grossly mis-representing what happened and what goes on there now. I busted my ass for VCFed. Erik busted his ass for VCFed. Jeff busts his ass for VCFed. Corey busts his ass for VCFed. You didn't do crap. For the record, unrelated to this little side-show, this morning I announced to the other board members that I was going to be winding down my involvement as a board member and opening up a spot for a new person. Over four years we are going to turn two out of five board positions over. I think that is a healthy turnover rate. You are doing your thing with Kennett Classic, which is a business that you own. Don't imply that we're doing anything like that with VCFed ... we're volunteering and making a difference, and we can demonstrate it. You've just found a good way to turn a hobby into a business deduction. There is a big difference between what we do and what you do.

Technically, a member is someone who simply subscribes to the mailing list. In spirit, a member is someone who becomes further involved in VCF affairs, either by becoming informed by reading the list, attending VCF functions, volunteering, etc. This is how we define membership for the purposes of voting and participating in steering the direction of the organization. There’s obviously a lot to running the show Evan, no one ever disputed that. My point was simple, I’m sorry you missed it, so here it is again. You keep touting Ken Thompson and throwing it in my face, even though I clearly said it was a huge score and we all congratulated you on it, but in the end it wasn’t even your idea to ask him, period. Did you give credit to anyone else? Nope. Did you physically tie him up and bring him there or did you communicate (obviously successfully by the way) with him through phone and emails? Getting His interviewer was also a great idea, and something multiple people discussed. Again, not just your idea. I’m sure it was an oversight on your part not mentioning that either. You keep knocking Jeff and belittling him as the show runner for a show that YOU bailed out of only months before without notice to anyone (you quit in a hissy fit on the public list without so much as a heads up to anyone) after you had just said you were at least going to stay till after vcf East. Then Covid happened, which no one could account for, but we still pulled off a great virtual show. Was great to see all the positive feedback from you on that one by the way. Your positive posts on the list keep coming fast and furiously. But you keep taking credit for all the great things you did In the past Evan, I’m sure there’s something you did that you haven’t rammed down everyone’s throat at least once or twice. Context matters, even if it doesn’t matter to you. My reaction to Evan’s post is that it is petty and (not so) passive aggressive. With all of planning for Festivus going on without him, he is reliving past misperceptions of being tossed out of VCF. In reality, the group he started had grown with the help of many who he refused to let grow up with it. Once VCF became a non-profit and a board was in place, he was annoyed that he could no longer be “president”. No one ever challenged Evan’s importance and his role as the founder and leader of VCF. However, after years of having suggestions, ideas, and objections fall on deaf ears, the board members came to an agreement to form a committee so that VCF could be operated and developed with a democratic process rather than what often seemed like a dictatorship. Evan, I apologize that this sounds rash, but in person we had conversations while working together in the warehouse where you admitted that you were annoyed at people for not doing things your way and that other members were on your nerves with opposing views. You also admitted that you were extremely stubborn and reluctant to listen to or acknowledge the contributions of others, myself included. I think you are a generally decent guy who like all humans has flaws. Currently, those are coming out in your recent posts. You created something great and when it grew, you continued to work with great people to make it even bigger and better. But when it got big enough that you needed to cooperate more with others, you opted out. In closing: A parent must let their teenager have more freedom to make their own decisions despite their objections to let them grow and thrive. You were a great parent, and still can be, you just need to let your child grow up. You can remain a part of it’s life if you can understand that it is growing up and has its own ideas. Throwing “I told you so” at it will only grow frustration and resentment. Hope all is well with you and that this message is read as the constructive criticism it was meant to be. It was an exaggeration. The commentator asked what to do. The show runner told them it was time to stop. Same same. They obviously wanted to continue, otherwise they wouldn’t have asked. It was readily apparent to everyone. Except you. Adam and I had DOZENS of people who were flabbergasted at the decision to stop the discussion come and complain to us at the computer/software store. It was the single biggest complaint we received at the event. Cutting them off mid sentence was not what happened, you are correct. You waited for them to ask what to do, and then cut the discussion off. Apologies for the misrepresentation to those who may not have watched the video. POSTPONED -- Vintage Repair Weekend 11/14-11/15 at System Source
by rar 10 Nov '20

10 Nov '20

We are postponing the repair weekend at System Source due to a local spike in COVID-19 over the past week. Several of the surrounding counties and Baltimore City have restricted events to ten or fewer people, and we expect similar restrictions to go into effect by Friday evening in Baltimore County. To a healthier 2021! We expect to host again in February 2021 and November 2021. That doesn't invalidate the two other VCFed-run events that have both elected to run exhibits/talks simultaneously. If anything, that makes East the outlier if West, PNW, and MW are all doing it that way. Bill Degnan via vcf-midatlantic wrote: >as a veteran exhibitor it's frustrating that you can't really walk around as much as you'd like, and you miss the things going on at the festival sometimes. I concur. It's why I've appreciated having help at my exhibit table, so I can step away for a moment to take photos, talk to people, etc. as needed. Still, there are at least 5 places I'd like to be at any given moment during a show and the exhibit gets priority. So it goes. Jason Howe via vcf-midatlantic wrote: >which helps assuage the disappointment of missing Joe Decuir's keynote last yearThat's unfair to you. We may elect to be an exhibitor and be part of the show, missing presentations important to us just isn't right if you ask me. So, how do we break this down? The VCF East approach is simply that the exhibit floor and keynote timeframes do not overlap, but that means only one keynote per main show day and the full day of classes and smaller subject talks. The rest of the VCFs have the two overlap, and take a more laissez faire approach (with VCFMW being the extreme example), where people duck out to see a talk and then come back. Having more than a few talks one wishes to attend throughout the day results in an empty booth, and the logic that lead us to the first approach. And I fully understand why people want to avoid seeing them unattended for too long. My point is that there has to be a happy middle ground between the die-hard "we must be shackled to our exhibits" mentality and leaving computers to their lonesome as we socialize and watch the presentations. Not everyone wants to see talks, and not everyone wants to stay at the table all day long. Other events of our caliber do this, especially the larger ones, so it's something to consider why the no-overlap approach isn't as common. Take my perspective with a grain of salt. -Alexander 'Z' Pierson On Tuesday, November 10, 2020, 02:23:42 PM EST, Jason Howe via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: On 11/10/20 11:06 AM, Bill Degnan via vcf-midatlantic wrote: > Overall flow and schedule and all that is hard to maintain when it's not > all in the same place. As an exhibitor, I always took the approach that I'm part of the show, one of the performers if you will, that the attendees have just paid money to come see. I'm member of the body of VCF, evangelizing about my particular interest niche, educating passers by on why it's the coolest thing in the world and worthy of preservation. I'm not arguing for one approach over the other, just sharing how I look at it, which helps assuage the disappointment of missing Joe Decuir's keynote last year, even while I was exhibiting a system he designed. :) --Jason
