VCF East 2020 Schedule for our virtual show on Oct. 10 & 11, 2020!
by Jeffrey Brace 08 Oct '20

08 Oct '20

Hello everyone, Sorry for the late notice about the schedule. I need to make sure that all the videos scheduled would indeed be finished. A lot of late submissions caused a lot of delay. I will be updating the website to reflect the schedule tomorrow. We will be creating Discord channels on the VCF server where people can ask questions for the presenters to answer. As a supplement we will be using microphone(a)vcfed.org for those not comfortable with Discord. More details to follow tomorrow when I have more time. Any questions, then please ask. VCF East 2020 Kit Available!
by systems_glitch 08 Oct '20

08 Oct '20

Tindie listing: https://www.tindie.com/products/glitchwrks/glitch-works-r6501qr6511q-single… forums thread: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.php?73828-ANNOUNCE-VCF-East-2020-Kit-… Nothing like getting something done right before the due date, eh? Work has been crazy and, fortunately or unfortunately, due to a possible coronavirus exposure we self-quarantined for the last two weeks and I was able to finally wrap up the user manual and assembly guide for the 2020 VCF East workshop kit! This year's kit was intended to fit in with the overall 6502 theme of VCF East 2020; however, I didn't want to do a 6502 SBC since there's a lot of good ones already available, and I felt like we needed something more unique. I happened to have some Rockwell R6501Q "single-chip microcomputer" processors, which are a 6502 core with some changes in a funky "QUIP-64" package -- if the plastic Motorla 68000 is the "Texas cockroach," this is the chip package version of a house centipede :) The R6501Q is 6502 core but adds a few instructions, and has I/O and control registers in zero page. Stack also lives in zero page. This provides a little bit of a challenge in porting existing 6502 code. The EEPROMs included in the parts kit are loaded with the Enhanced Woz monitor, Steve Wozniak's 6502 monitor from the Apple 1 days. We're working on ports of EhBASIC and Tiny BASIC as well. They're not done yet -- EhBASIC is going to be a much larger project, but Tiny BASIC is very nearly done and should be available for testing this week. Both can be loaded in over the serial port without reprogramming the EEPROM. Anyway, check out the Tindie listing for more information, links to source code, and a link to the PDF manual (which has schematics, of course). We're going to try and livestream something during Virtual VCF East this weekend. Thanks, Jonathan

How do we do a VCF/TCF presentation over Zoom?

Not sure I can add CDL to this so I'll repost in CDL and summarize at some point. How do you present, things that are not on the computer or something I'm talking about such that a white board or circuits? How do I take a camera off of me and move it over to the circuit or whiteboard? VCF East 2020 is Virtual ONLY!
by Jeffrey Brace 04 Oct '20

04 Oct '20

I just want to make it clear to everyone that the general public IS NOT ALLOWED at VCF East 2020 next weekend. I know that there was some confusion when we used the world "hybrid", so we are not using that word anymore. What we meant to say is that we would be on-site at InfoAge running the operation with administrative staff and a handful of exhibitors who will show off their exhibit live. Everything will be streaming from our studio to YouTube. We will be allowing questions from the internet via Discord and our e-mail address. If anyone from the general public arrives, due to Covid-19 restrictions at the museum campus, we cannot allow them in the exhibit area or the Steaming studio. Sorry for the confusion. I will be releasing the schedule soon. I'm just waiting for some last minute submissions before I do that. The administrative staff did some testing, setup and discussion this past Saturday to make sure we had everything working properly in the Streaming Studio. We have the major parts worked out and are in good shape for next weekend. We have a good lineup for next weekend and will be starting Saturday October 10 at 9AM Eastern time until 6PM. Sunday's schedule will be the same. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783 <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campai…> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2>

TI-99/4A Peripheral Expansion Box - Voltages
by Mark Whittington 03 Oct '20

03 Oct '20

Does anyone here have much experience with these? I picked one up recently and I've been going over it before plugging things in. I tested the unloaded voltages with the transformer set to 115VAC and got the following on the unregulated DC output rails: +8V rail: 14.4V +16V rail: 25.2V -16V rail: -25.3V It looks like a previous owner had it apart -- there are hand-written labels on the various input taps for the transformer, so I thought that perhaps it was mis-wired on reassembly. But testing the other taps the best result I can get is with the 220VAC tap at approx. +7.5V and +/- 12V on the unregulated outputs. My analog circuits knowledge is pretty thin, so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help out. My questions are: 1) I've measured the output taps from the transformer for each of the various input taps and they match what I'd expect to see as inputs given the various rectified outputs (RMS AC -> Peak AC, minus a diode drop) so I don't *think* the problem is on the power supply board. Am I missing something? The schematic I've been referencing: http://www.mainbyte.com/ti99/schematic/peb_power.jpg (I have the -2 version) 2) Is just a case of not having a load on the outputs causing them to run high? I know that the linear regulators that are likely to be used on any cards can technically handle these inputs, but I wouldn't want to assume that they have heat sinks large enough to dissipate the extra power for very long. 3) Is this actually normal? Thanks in advance for any help.

Last Meeting – Bill Atkinson and HyperCard (1987)
by Adam Michlin 03 Oct '20

03 Oct '20

Hi Everyone, So I'm blogging now. Mostly about Computer Science education, but every so often I find something that intersects with my other love. I was lucky to be in Silicon Valley in the 1980s and, since my family purchased one of the earliest Mac 128Ks, my father took me to the Stanford Macintosh User Group (SMUG) every month. I can only remember bits and pieces (including a particularly enjoyable presentation by Guy Kawaski) and SMUG, being a few minutes away from Apple headquarters, was a hot bed of all that was upcoming in the Macintosh world. I've been doing some research as of late and discovered that my father also wrote a column for the SMUG newsletter and he has graciously given me permision to post the text of his "Last Meeting" column describing the meeting where Bill Atkinson introduced HyperCard circa 1987. Interesting to me both for the disucssion of how HyperCard might or might not influence Computer Science education and, of course, Bill freakin' Atkinson! https://blog.ceos.io/2020/10/03/last-meeting-bill-atkinson-and-hypercard/ Best wishes, -Adam

Free stuff followup from previous workshop
by David Riley 02 Oct '20

02 Oct '20

Hey all, Thanks to everyone for taking some of my spare machines so I could move without filling every cubic inch of the new space with gear! In unpacking things after moving, I've found a few things that may be of interest to folks who took some of the items: - Three RL02 packs to go with the RL02 drive, and an RLV12 card to drive it from QBus PDP-11s/VAXen, though I do not have a cable - A 5-pack of LTO1 media, to go with the drive that was in one of the Alphas - A bunch of Apple IIgs original manuals and software - A load of 30-pin SIMMs - The original 604e card for the Power Mac 9600 which has the G4 upgrade card (I have someone who would actually really like the G4 card if you don't want that, but I told them not to hold their breath) There are probably more things that I'm forgetting, but that's it. If anyone is passing near Annapolis on their way to a VCF event soon, I can send it up with them (given pandemic concerns, I don't think I'm going to risk Festivus this year). I'm curious to see what might have been left, as well; if no one nabbed the Quadra 605, I wouldn't mind getting that back because I hadn't really meant to put it on the pile, but I'm not gonna reclaim it if someone has it already. In any case, thanks so much for taking stuff off my hands, and I have more that I'll be sending/bringing up when/if possible once I have things more sorted here. Miss you all, and I wish things were otherwise, but... *gestures vaguely at 2020* - Dave

Now you can get one to make your se/30 32bit clean and have a rom-based bootable system (like the classic) for emergencies... Pretty cool. Cleaning Franklin cases

I’m looking to clean up some Franklin ACE-1xxx cases and am wondering if Retrobrite is the best option. They were yellow when manufactured so will retrobrite do much to change the color? Is there a recommended cleaner to get plain old grim off the crinkled finish? That alone might be enough. How about cleaning the key caps? Bob

help for Sun SPARCstation support
by Herb Johnson 29 Sep '20

29 Sep '20

For some reason, I got a request for help from someone who is running some Sun SPARC stuff on their day job; several systems for legacy purposes. I don't "carry" much Sun stuff but my Web site does attract eyeballs. The person tells me: > Sparc5’s, Ultras, and Sparc Classics I’m trying to get functional. The problem I have with the Sparc5’s and Classics is I can’t get the software to install. The Ultra boxes I have can be upgraded to a Windows VM ... So I looked around the Web as they did, and I didn't see much current discussion about these systems. A decade ago there certainly was hobby interest in the little Sun boxes, I had some myself. Today, not so much - people I guess got them running or not and didn't need to say more about them. Or went the VM route. Or of course lost interest when the hardware died. I don't know - this is not my domain. "too new", he he. I told the person, look around vintage-computing sites and discussions and stir something up. I mentioned this site and said I'd post some inquiries. The request is something between hobby and professional; I'll let those interested sort that out. The person didn't say but I think they are in the Minnesota area. So: either post some response on the subject, show some general interest, and/or contact me. I'll forward results to this person, or they may see results if they read the maillist archive going forward. Regards, Herb -- Herbert R. Kennt Vlassic Wrap Up
by Bill Degnan 29 Sep '20

29 Sep '20

The first anniversary event yesterday at Kennett Classic was successful and the new exhibits were (more or less) completed on time. Today? Take it easy. (and Go Eagles!). I am very thankful to my friends from System Source and VCFed who came to support the event and the growing local vintage computing community who stopped by. The weather wasn't perfect but the swap was open the entire day. I greatly appreciate the effort everyone made load/unload swap tables with quality items for sale. We all wore masks and kept it safe. Thank you Evan K for the donation of portable computing artifacts, manuals and books. (Posted to facebook) Yes we must deal with Covid 19, but there is nothing wrong with working now for the time when people can travel and visit without a @#$%! mask, which takes a toll on our events and museum traffic. I am going to work on a "vintage computing map" brochure handout containing points of interest related to computing and technology history within the MidAtlantic that groups/members can hand out to visitors of our various museums and possibly other museums and hotels, etc. The MidAtlantic has the Large Scale Systems Museum in the west (Pittsburgh), Info Age in the East (Wall NJ). System Source (Baltimore), Kennett Classic (Kennett Sq) and the hopefully opening soon Computer Church museum (Parkesburg PA ) are all on the Route 1 corridor between Baltimore and Philadelphia. There are also a number of more broadly "technology" oriented museums and centers that can be included as well. If anyone wants to work with me on this project contact me privately. Step one, build a list of the points of interest and gather visual materials (photos and maps). Best, Bill Kennettclassic.com Vintagecomputer.net

VCF East 2020 Virtual Show update 9/27/20
by Jeffrey Brace 27 Sep '20

27 Sep '20

Hey everyone, Just wanted to give you an update for those wondering and waiting. I am currently waiting for the last of the videos to be submitted. They should all be in by the end of the week Oct. 3 (hopefully), then I will send out the schedule for the show hopefully by Oct. 5. We plan on showing through YouTube in the Vintage Computer Federation channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/MidAtlanticRetroComp I'm very excited about the lineup for this event! Lots of famous people (Bil Herd & Dave Haynie), interesting projects (C256 Foenix), cool stuff (Xerox Star), fun stuff (Atari8BitBot). We have 6 exhibitors showing off their exhibits in-person and on-site. The virtual show will be October 10 & 11 from 9AM to 6PM. The general public is not allowed to the show. This may seem obvious, but I've had to explain a few times to people what a virtual show is and now the general public isn't allowed only a small number of organizers and exhibitors only. More details to come! -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

Repair Workshop for VCF Museum owned artifacts: October 24 & 25, 2020
by Jeffrey Brace 27 Sep '20

27 Sep '20

Date: October 24 & 25, 2020 Time: 10AM to midnight (24th), 10AM to 6PM (25th) Building: CDL, 9032A VCF has a list of artifacts that need repair in the museum and the warehouse. We are looking for volunteers to come and help us repair them. Anything is fair game to repair *with permission*. These are artifacts either in the museum or warehouse. We want to get the ones in the museum working first as we like to have as much hands on working computers in the museum as possible. We are also looking for good or better demos for the computers in the museum. Any volunteers working on VCF stuff are *not* charged a fee this repair day and stay for free in the Sandy bunkroom. VCF will likely even pay for a simple breakfast (Dunkin Donuts) and lunch (Pizza). Festivus December 12 & 13, 2020
by Jeffrey Brace 27 Sep '20

27 Sep '20

I've been thinking about how we can make Festivus work while keeping safe with Covid-19. We have been very successful in keeping safe during our repair workshop with up to 20 people and using two different buildings. I have a few ideas that I'm developing: In addition to Festivus outdoor grilling: Festivus Swap Meet Repair Workshop Game Room My current plan is to use two (and possibly three) different areas: CDL (repair workshop, xbox lan party with Dan Jacobs) Sandy Area (Festivus Swap Meet, Food, game room) The date scheduled for Festivus is December 12 & 13. Signup is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lkvcwSpdy_c67MJQTiUEDspim2PrcIjM1Of… I'm hoping to make Festivus happen with modifications to keep everyone safe. I will update you as I figure it out. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

Museum Report 2020-09-26
by Jeffrey Brace 27 Sep '20

27 Sep '20

A very busy day! We started out with a scheduled cub scout group of 20 children and adults. We broke them up into two groups with one group watching the model train museum down the hall and the other with me in the VCF museum. High interest people with one kid who was a repeat visitor who knew lots of things already was happy to see a Commodore 64 in action! He was so happy to get a The Print Shop printout to take home! I couldn't give one of those to everyone because it takes 6 minutes for each page. Instead I gave them a papertape punch out with their name on it from the PDP-8. They could type their name and the program would punch out the holes and it was a great souvenir for them to take home. I started the tour with the microchip section, but also showed them the difference between a vacuum tube, transistor and microchip. Kids seem to really like King's Quest on the PCjr. I have to sit down and figure out how to play that game. I get stuck at a certain point. It was fun to ask them questions like: "Do you know who Bill Gates is?", "Do you know who Steve Jobs is?", etc. After the tour there were still about a dozen total people coming through the museum with high interest. It was nice to have a busy day after a few weeks of lackluster attendance. I had to leave at 3PM, so Dennis and Dylan took over. Dylan helped me by talking with Jason Perkins to get the Xerox Star ready for demo at VCF East 2020's Virtual show in less than two weeks (Oct. 10 & 11). -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

recap kit for Mac Classic analog board
by Herb Johnson 27 Sep '20

27 Sep '20

As the subject suggests, I'd like to buy a recap kit for the Macintosh Classic analog board (power supply) model 630-0525. I'd think there would be more than one source. And I might use them for other analog Mac repairs. Does anyone know of a reliable vendor for capacitor kits? I see "console5.com" offers one kit for $20 + ship, a plausible amount for sourcing all the parts of the right size and specs for a few sets. They have other kits too. But has anyone dealt with them? Asking "the google" comes up with "review sites" that say awful things; but those could be scam-sites. Ebay? nope, except for a Russian site. why order overseas? Web search only yields a few recapping services, someone in Australia, and then some radio recapping services (https://hayseedhamfest.com/ looks good but not for Mac computers). If I were a part of some vintage Mac discussion groups, maybe I'd find something. But searching them from the inside or the outside is difficult. So: I did some homework to find a vendor. These are my results. Maybe Mac owners just order individually from Digikey and hope they get parts that fit well? - regards, Herb -- Herbert R. This sounds like a great excuse to get out of the city. I sent an RSVP in - I know I’m last minute... I'm hoping to get a gist of the whole thing, as next time I may want to get a table. My stuff is so horribly organized at the moment, I'd need another week to figure out what I'd bring haha. I should get there 11ish. And if anyone has any 2MB or 4MB SIMMs rated 100ns or faster, I’ll be in the market haha. Microsoft's 20HAL uploader
by Richard Cini 26 Sep '20

26 Sep '20

All – I’ve done a quite a bit of work with my Gazelle, and doing some work on 86DOS and its comparison to PC DOS 1.0 (at the code level, a very high correlation). Partially related to that is a program called “20HAL” which was a code uploader Microsoft used in the late stages to get code to IBM in Boca Raton, FL. I did a little write-up on it here (http://www.classiccmp.org/cini/hal.htm) There are some holes in the analysis – I think it’s pretty close, though -- but I’d really like to get some more details on it. Unfortunately, it’s 40-year-old code at this point and how many people remember how they used a file transfer utility that long ago. Anyway, enjoy the read. If anyone sees any corrections that need to be made, let me know. Rich -- Rich Cini http://www.classiccmp.org/cini http://www.classiccmp.org/altair32

Got in @ 1p. DEAD!! All Day! However, a busy day. Ray Chase had visited the Delran Rescue to pickup RADAR stuff in anotherpod from the CPU stuff. Hegave us a iMac white pedestal unit with chrome gimbal mount for the display. I am not familiar with Mac stuff so hopefully the braintrust on that equipment can decipher its historical place. Jeff Brace asked me to go up to IA admin., to get somevintage ENIAC posters that were found. Nice laminated stuff, and a blast from our past too. Their header shows the M A R CH logo. It would be nice to find a blank space on the wall for them. I furthered my documentation of the Houston Instruments(Allen Datagraph) Omnigraphic 2000 plotter for the EAI TR20 display. Again I have not come up withprints on the thing, purchased or otherwise. So the manual plod goes on. If anyone has prints on this model XY of recorder, it wouldbe appreciated to get a copy. Thursday Sept 24: Our management has asked me to start going through ourcollection of slide rules, which needed to be started anyway for the museum display in the hallway. I got through three boxes, initially to sort, as all thecollection boxes are a mish-mosh piles. I found some JEWELS !!! 1. An Intel 808x / 27xx memory speed circular slide rulecalculator to determine proper speed selection of the processor ROM compliment. See: https://worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Consumer/Archive-Byte-IDX/IDX/80s/80-… This is now on display in the processor exhibit. 2. Dick Tracypersonal code maker See: https://www.cryptomuseum.com/crypto/hand/lawrence/index.htm#dick_tracy The LawrenceSecret Code-Maker, also known as the Dick Tracy Code-Maker, is a fullyfunctional hand-operated transposition cipher in the shape of a linear woodenslide rule, sold from 1939 onwards as a children's toy by US slide rulemanufacturer Lawrence Engineering Service in Peru (Illinois? ed). Cable network allows some of the RF spectrum to return for the upstream of cable modems. So the TV might of been connected to the cable system, and when on it was generating noise that was taking out the "upstream" from customers moderms to the CMTS. I would imagine the story hypes it a bit, and only people on a single node were bumped offline. Not the entire community. Kennett Classic Swap Thread
by Bill Degnan 23 Sep '20

23 Sep '20

If you're planning to claim a ~ 7x 5 swap space, please remember to bring your own table or tarp. We'll mark numbers where the spaces are located. You're welcome to come before 9AM kickoff. If you're only bringing one or two things, share a table and have a way to keep track of what's yours, label clearly with a price, name, etc. Please advise spaces needed asap so we can plan for it. We're going to have a table or two of our own with Apple //e and Tandy 1000SX complete systems for sale and smaller things. ANY REQUESTS? Spaces will be allocated starting from the FRONT of the building and work back along the side of the building to the rear parking lot until there is no space. When you arrive swap sellers can claim the an unclaimed space and set up from the back of the building. There is a thin alley street a half block closer to the intersection of UNION and STATE that provides access by car to the back parking lot, but please do not park in the lot after unloading. The refreshments tent will be in the back. Signups to access the exhibits (per COVID capacity restrictions) will be managed at the front of the building. Masks are required to access the interior of the building, no exceptions. See https://www.kennettclassic.com for directions and more details on the event.
