I’ve been asked for information about an old Teletype printer. Pictures in this google album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/N3BzBkQcN2nFmLXd7 not my area of expertise but I figure someone here might know. Any information? Model no? interface spec? is documentation available? How rare/valuable/collectible might something like this be? It’s located in Nebraska ☹ * Glenn

Computer, free to a good home

I have a Gateway "pizza box" desktop computer that was given to me. I can't figure out the model number, but here are the specs: build date: 2002 cpu: Celeron 1.4GHz RAM: two SDRAM slots. They each have a 512MB stick, however, the BIOS will only recognize one or the other of them. Either one works in either slot, but both won't work together. (This is a show stopper for running Linux). disk: IDE. I've installed a *BAD* 6GB disk as a place holder, because the mounting method is non-obvious. The original disk was owned by a friend and I don't feel right giving it away, even if I wiped it. CDROM (works) Floppy (un-tested) On the motherboard: video, sound, Ethernet, USB, plus PS/2 keyboard and mouse sockets. In theory, the computer can boot from USB or the network. This system is too limited for me to actually use for something, but it would make a good MSDOS box. It had Windows XP on it, and ran "OK", if slowly. The computer is in Jackson, NJ, and I'm willing to drive about 30 minutes to meet up with you. Or I can drop it at the next VCF Workshop and you can pick it up there. I don't feel like trying to ship it. Bill Dudley This email is free of malware because I run Linux.

Request for Information on Teletype LPW 300
by svcatitc＠aol.com 22 Jul '20

22 Jul '20

All; I have been asked by my one of my other volunteer organizations to send out requests for information on the following: Teletype Model LPW 300RA with a Model 1433 paper roll winder. (Escutcheon was very small. Stamping was light & my eyesight is getting dimmer. I am assuming I got the numbers right.) This version of Teletype has no paper tape reader or punch, nor does it have a keyboard. It is a receiving printer only.It has "BELL SYSTEM" logo printed in the front off the slope of where a keyboard usually resides. It was used in conjunction with a melt flow furnace at Bethlehem Steel Corp. It printed out the percentages of content of other elements in the molten iron. Unknown whether it works, ergo the reason for information, schematics, mechanical maintenance etc. This artifact was donated to the National Museum of Industrial History, and the historian would like to get it running.Photographs can be acquired upon my next trip up to Bethlehem, PA. Any info on this item forwarded would be greatly appreciated. Bill Inderrieden

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Older Dell laptop
by ☼ wil lindsay ☼ 22 Jul '20

I hate to be negative, but if your friend doesn't have the love for antiquity that we share, a PIII era Dell is not going to serve as a daily driver. The prices are a little high on eBay because they are starting to come into fashion as cheap retro-game machines. The defacto old-machine rescue OS in linux( Lubuntu : https://lubuntu.net/ ) is on the edge of dropping support for the 32-bit processors. It'll work, but page loading simple things like Facebook and Gmail that everyday users need is a bit painful. If money is an issue, I usually recommend 5-8 year old netbooks running Chrome for everyday users on a super-tight budget. They can be had from $80--to-free, depending how important a battery is. If you're at a real loss, I have a 2012 Acer C710 that I was going to flush and clean for ebay. I'd be happy to pass it along. I have an older Dell laptop that belongs to a friend. He has no money so I’m trying to do this cheap as possible. I’m trying to get an older dell laptop updated to get on internet but it seems a lost cause. Laptop works great (XP) and current browser loads some pages but can't figure what OS will work well with this configuration. I’m sure more memory will be needed but I need you find what OS and browser will work well first. It is PIII 1ghz, 10gig hdd, 256k 133mhz ram. Nvidia mobile video. I was thinking Linux, but no experience there. Any ideas that can allow me to get this done on the cheap? Mike R. Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

There is an additional option for Comcast subscribers. There's a Comcast public hotspot on Marconi Rd. outside of 9032-A. I've found that more powerful clients, like laptops, can typically use the hotspot directly if you're in the back half of that room. To improve the experience, I usually bring an Extender and repeat the signal within the room. But you still have to know your Comcast credentials to use it. -Jonathan

Mike, I have no idea what your schedule looks like, but I'm retired, so I can meet anytime. That said, I have a dentist appointment in Red Bank tomorrow at 4PM. Assuming you can get over there during the day, we could meet either before or after my appointment. Another possibility is to meet at the Asian Grocery in Marlboro, at which I will be shopping on Friday. If you're working during the day and can't meet at either of these times, we can meet in Freehold or Marlboro some evening after you get off work. VCF museum re-opening August 1
by Jeffrey Brace 20 Jul '20

20 Jul '20

InfoAge and all their museums including the Vintage Computer Federation Museum will be opening August 1 for regular museum hours and days: Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday from 1PM to 5PM. Keep in mind that you must go through the front desk if you are visiting any of the museums because they will take your temperature, make sure that you are wearing a mask and take down your contact information (for contact tracing purposes). Everyone must wear a mask and each museum has Covid-19 procedures in place for managing the flow of people, wearing masks, hand sanitizer, social distancing, etc. The docents and steering committee are preparing the museum for reopening over the next two weeks. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member, VCF East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org cell: 732-759-1783

I have too many computers. This is a Mac G4 "Quicksilver". I've replaced the (dead) power supply with a non-Apple supply (with wiring mods to make it work). It has Ubuntu 16.04 installed on it, because I was using the computer in my guest room, and guests should have a modern browser. The case is in good to excellent cosmetic condition. I'll wipe my account off the machine and give you the root password, and then you can either use it as is, or install MacOS 9 on it (or whatever). It has a 40GB disk and 640MB of RAM. Here are the detailed specs about OS and CPU: VERSION="16.04.6 LTS (Xenial Xerus)" bogomips : 49.81 clock : 500.000000MHz cpu : 7400, altivec supported detected as : 65 (PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics) L2 cache : 1024K unified machine : PowerMac3,3 Memory : 640 MB motherboard : PowerMac3,3 MacRISC Power Macintosh platform : PowerMac pmac flags : 00000014 pmac-generation : NewWorld processor : 0 processor : 1 revision : 2.9 (pvr 000c 0209) total bogomips : 99.63 I don't particularly want to ship this as it's big and heavy. As a test, I wanted to throw together a small CompuPro system to see if I can get disk images from the Maslin archive working. The only board I don’t have is the CPU-Z board. I have an Interfacer 1, plenty of RAM boards, and the Disk 1 controller. Does anyone have a spare working CPU-Z board that they could part with? Even if I could just use it for testing, that’d be great, but I could do a trade also. I have a ton of spare boards and a few other interesting things. Please contact me off-list. Thanks! PDF of Microcomputer Systems Principles Featuring the 6502/KIM
by Jeffrey Brace 15 Jul '20

15 Jul '20

Bill Mensch mentioned this book in a video chat I had with him preparing for his VCF West 2020 Virtual presentation. It seems that a book that I'm looking for is hard to find and there is no PDF available. The book is: Microcomputer Systems Principles Featuring the 6502/KIM by Camp, Smay and Triska This is the Google Listing: https://books.google.com/books/about/Microcomputer_Systems_Principles_Featu… This is the World Cat listing: https://www.worldcat.org/title/microcomputer-systems-principles-featuring-t… If anyone knows of a PDF version, then please let me know. If you *have* the book, then consider scanning it for the general public's use. OT: Hard Drive Data recovery using DDRescue
by Jeffrey Brace 15 Jul '20

15 Jul '20

So I knew that DD Rescue on Linux was good at data recovery, but it has been a long time since I have used it so I'm just a beginner. Ian has used it a lot and knows lots of tricks to maximizing data recovery from hard drives. I have a hard drive that was with my desktop since 2011, so it has seen a lot of use. It is in the process of failing. Ian used the command like this: ddrescue -v -v -d /dev/sde3 salvage.img salvage.log He can explain a little better about what it is doing with these switches, but this way you can stop the process and pick up where you left off and it will continue. It uses the log file to keep track of things. So I ran the process which took about 36 hours or so. In the end I recovered 99.99% of my data with 40MB lost. Pretty amazing! It recovered almost all of the 1.4 Terabytes of data with about 40MB of sectors with errors. Pretty amazing! To recover a little about another 3MB of data, I had to unplug and restart the drive because it seemed to lock up. Then I ran another command to work from the end of the disk going backwards and to try 5 times to recover as much data as possible that had errors in the sectors. This was the command used: ddrescue -v -v -d -r5 -R /dev/sde3 salvage.img salvage.log On the windows 10 side I used OSFMount to mount the image and then copy to another hard drive. Thanks to Ian for helping me with the commands and to Jonthan Sturges for lending the cable to connect to my computer. I would have lost it all without your help. It's truly amazing! Other commands used were: mkdir /mnt/test mount -o loop,ro salvage.img /mnt/test Maybe Ian can fill in more details about the process. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member, VCF East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Lear Siegler ADM-2
by jackson22 13 Jul '20

13 Jul '20

Hi everyone, I’m currently looking for a Lear Siegler ADM-2 terminal to purchase from someone for use in a future short film I’m creating. Afterwards I’d house it in my personal museum. If anyone has one or you know someone who owns one and could be interested in selling, let me know. I’d pay very well. I could also do a trade, I have quite a few rare terminals in my own collection. I’m familiar with old computers and know how to work around them, it could be in any condition. It would be in good hands. You can also Email me at jacksonharrington22(a)gmail.com Thanks.

Fwd: VCF Midwest 2020 Cancellation
by Jeffrey Brace 10 Jul '20

10 Jul '20

For those of you not on the VCF MW mailing list. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: VCF Midwest Planning <info(a)vcfmw.org> Date: Fri, Jul 10, 2020 at 11:36 AM Subject: VCF Midwest 2020 Cancellation To: Jeffrey Brace <jeffrey(a)vcfed.org> View this email in your browser <https://us18.campaign-archive.com/?e=62720bb786&u=6d177060bd4511e27d05266a5…> We regret to announce... *There will be no VCF Midwest this year.* The conditions imposed upon us by the CoViD-19 pandemic and related government regulations, as well as a depressed expected turn-out figure, will make it impossible for us to host an event of the size and quality our dedicated fans have come to expect. Thus today we have terminated our 2020 contract with Waterford Banquets and the Clarion Inn hotel. We recommend cancelling your hotel and travel reservations, if you have made them, and we hope that you have not been too greatly inconvenienced by our change of plans. We also wish to express our thanks for the many responses we received to our survey sent back in May. Your feedback was informative, interesting, humorous and most of all, essential in helping us make the right decision about this year's show. The good news is that we have an excellent relationship with our host venue and have already locked in our contract for 2021. Although a long way off, plans will take shape early next year for that show, so please keep an eye out for further announcements of VCFMW 16 (or will it be 15b? We don't know yet!) Also, following the lead of other cancelled festivals, we are considering a *Virtual VCFMW *to be held on one or more of the dates allocated for this year's show (Sept 12 or 13, 2020). If we think we can pull off something half as entertaining as the real thing, maybe we'll do it. Watch your email for announcements sometime in August. Any working Jade Big Z out there?
by Richard Cini 09 Jul '20

09 Jul '20

Yet another project, all. Trying to get a Jade Big-Z board working (I found the box on my shelf...no idea where I got it). I find the manual somewhat confusing, and mine didn’t come with a serial/front panel cable. So I wondered if anyone on-list had a board and could tell me the switch settings and how the cable is wired. I took a stab at burning a 2716 with the BigZ monitor and wiring up a cable but I’m not having much luck. The board looks new-ish and was in the box and I have no reason to believe it doesn’t work so I wanted to eliminate the easy stuff first. Thanks! Rich Get Outlook for iOS<https://aka.ms/o0ukef>

OT: Foundation movie, Robot and foundation book series Isaac Asimov
by Jeffrey Brace 02 Jul '20

02 Jul '20

I have always been a science fiction fan, but have neglected reading the "great" novels. So I saw a trailer for The Foundation movie based on Isaac Asimov's book. It will be coming on Apple TV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gdm40MPYnw So I was like now's a good time to read the books. Then I find out that not only were there the trilogy, but two prequels and two sequel books. Then I get the audio book and the author says, wait, the I, Robot series is connected to these books and you should read those first, ugh. So here is the recommended order of the books: The Complete Robot (1982) I, Robot (1950) Caves of Steel (1954) The Naked Sun (1957) The Robots of Dawn (1983) Robots and Empire (1985) The Currents of Space (1952) The Stars, Like Dust (1951) Pebble in the Sky (1950) Prelude to Foundation (1988) Forward the Foundation (1993) Foundation (1951) Foundation and Empire (1952) Second Foundation (1953) Foundation's Edge (1982) Foundation and Earth (1986) So I already have: I, Robot Prelude to Foundation Foundation's Edge Foundation and Earth And I ordered: The Complete Robot Caves of Steel I may have some others, but definitely not all of them. I was just wondering if anyone wanted to give or sell very cheaply their copies of their books? -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member, VCF East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

[OT] Low resolution high color games = bad?
by John Heritage 25 Jun '20

25 Jun '20

Hey folks, I've always felt that the mid-90s when games were still fairly low resolution (320x200, 320x240, sometimes 640x400) but started having access to 16-bit and 24-bit color palettes, the graphics tended to look very bad/blurry. This contrasts with a few years earlier where you had the same resolution but less colors so it was easier to 'see' what was going on in a game. For me there was a ratio -- at 1024x768 - 65,536 colors is fine, but 320x200 -- anything more than like 256 colors or so becomes too much and makes things hard to distinguish. The 'too many colors at low resolution' kinda turned me off gaming for a little while in the mid-1990s. Does anyone have similar thoughts/experiences?

Altair - DB25 mounting - thick panel
by Jeff G 24 Jun '20

24 Jun '20

So an update to my previous "Altair can't jump" thread - turns out it was something on that serial board, as I was finally able to get a 88-2SIOJP from Martin Eberhard, and it works great and the Altair CPU had no problems whatsoever running CPM, Basic, and a variety of other software I threw at it. I'm amazed at how awesome these reproduction boards are for these things (my Altair had ONLY a cpu board in it). I do plan to revisit that card though as I can now use the monitor on the 2SIO to test/troubleshoot it much faster than toggling 60+ bytes every time. Next question - I went to mount the DB25 serial ports into the back of the cabinet, to find that the panel is pretty thick, and really prevents the plugs from connecting properly with the locking screws (screwnuts?) in place. (I'm coining that word!) It also seems like the nut part of the screw would have to be half as deep to compensate for the thickness of the panel. I can grind it down but then it'd only leave a couple threads left. I think I can overcome this using the serial cables included with the 2sio card by actually mounting them on the outside surface, if I can find some longer screwnuts that would go all the way through the housing and the panel. Something like this but maybe a hair longer: https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32997261872.html Anyone else have any other ideas though? I'm good with IDC connectors and ribbon cable so could always use a different connector. I think i've seen some older uber-deep DB25s and now I know why they existed lol. Jeff aka Bags

Apple had the Profile external hard drive that could be connected to the Apple II (my elementary school had one to run the library card catalog). Repair Workshops for July 11 & 12 and August 15 & 16 2020
by Jeffrey Brace 22 Jun '20

22 Jun '20

Now that the levels of Covid-19 infections in New Jersey has diminished to a safer level and the Governor of NJ has allowed indoor meetings of 10 per room, I am scheduling a repair workshop for July and August. Remember to follow all precautions necessary to keep yourself safe like wearing face masks, washing hands, using hand sanitizer and follow the recommendations of the Health Department of New Jersey. Keep in mind that I will limit the signups to 15 people. We will be using the CDL rooms where 10 can be in each room. Also a few people can work in the museum workshop area and the warehouse if needed. If the recommendations change during the next 3 weeks, then I will increase the signup amount. First 15 to signup guarantees a spot. Having said that here is the signup sheet for *July 11 & 12*: < https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11sRwLY3QocPyRcrvPpsV2V3LO_K_S__FXWm… > *August 15 & 16*: < https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L3Jc_RIHiBG08kZOOAgzvqjf8G0ox9ZRa6B… > -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member, VCF East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org
