All packed up and excited for Festivus
by Ian Primus 07 Dec '19

07 Dec '19

Got the van all packed up. Lots of hauling televisions and cardboard boxes and milk crates of stuff in the snow. Hoping the drive tomorrow morning is uneventful, and looking forward to a good Festivus! There will be a similar large spread of classic games as last year, if you have a game cartridge in particular you'd like to play, feel free to bring it along, chances are there will be a machine to play it. -Ian

I know I'm late to the party on this (been a busy few weeks between events, financials, health issues, getting a robot and having my mouth drilled) but I have a few things here between my work and collection that I would be interested in selling if there is any interest. In the collection we have a lot of x86 stuff, giant towers, compact boxes, a 386 system with it's original manual and MS-DOS 3 disk, some monitors, a few DEC tape drives, a Sun Sparcstation with PGT IMIX labeling on it, a VAX M38 which I'm mulling over selling, 2 Mac Classics I'm considering selling, and maybe more. I'll likely put up an album at some point soon for a better idea on things. Not planning on bringing everything but if there is anything that jumps out at anyone feel free to let me know off the mailing list.

> [NON-Text Body part not included] Interesting machine! I knew of the Atari STacy laptops but wasn't aware of the ST Book. Most of the laptops I think were used by music people for the MIDI apps? (On that note -- Wouldn't mind picking up a legal dongle for Notator or Cubase for my Atari Mega 2 ST. The cracked copy of Notator I was playing with seems unstable. I emailed Steinberg asking if they would open the ST software to the public but never got anything back.)

Commodore IEEE Floppy Drive Needed
by J. Alexander Jacocks 06 Dec '19

06 Dec '19

All, I'm talking with someone already, but I'm not sure if they have a spare floppy drive. So, to make sure that I'm covered, I'm bringing my PET 4032 to Festivus, primarily to show off, but I'm looking for an IEEE floppy drive for it. I'm not that picky about the type, as I have a ZoomFloppy, but I'd like to get a working drive. Anyone have spares that they'd like to part with? Thanks! - Alex

Festivus Bad movies
by Jeffrey Brace 05 Dec '19

05 Dec '19

A few years ago we had a contest to come up with the worst movie. A few years too late I have my pick. I will be showing it at Festivus. It will be a surprise. You will all think that it is horrible. I plan on using my laptop to show movies, etc. in the cafeteria. It will mostly be background noise and diversion since that room isn't conducive to movie watching or hearing what's on the TV very well. But, I also bought a FireStick and if anyone wants to watch movies in the lounge area, then I can make that available. The lounge area is more of a proper movie room because it is quiet, dark and has comfy chairs. We will also be showing Chris Liendo's Commodore video. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

Festivus - Items for Sale
by Herb Johnson 05 Dec '19

05 Dec '19

http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/vcf19_laptops.txt With a mix of annoyance and trepidation, I present the list of items I will cram into my little Toyota and bring to Festivus. I request half a table, please. I request half a table, because 1) is there any space left? 2) I have a plan. I'll do as Doug Crawford suggests: leave the grot in my car to reduce the clutter and my backache. Bring items in as interests merit. Bring them back to my car when interest abates. Not passing judgement, but the sheer volume of items (and my old man's back) suggests to me this is a plausible strategy. Those of you, who are particularly excited about a thing, can email me personally and let me know: name a price. I suggest some prices for items less common. A working laptop has some utility, if only as a terminal for file transfer. In twenty years, I'll tell whoever listens to me, "I once sold a Thinkpad for a bottle of beer; now it's worth a bottle of water! Curses! Who knew?" Help feed my narrative. regards and best of the holidays, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Need Tandy 2500SX Deskmate Disks
by Jeff G 02 Dec '19

02 Dec '19

Would anyone happen to have Tandy 2500 SX/20 Deskmate disks? These were specific to the computer - I actually have disks 1 and 2, but need disk 3. While I can find the generic Deskmate online, this was specific to the computer as it had it's own built-in DAC sound, and there's apps for it. Jeff aka Bags

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Apple keyboards [was chording keyboards]
by Jeffrey Jonas 01 Dec '19

Many thanks to Jonathan Gevaryahu for his reply. Sean Riddle's https://seanriddle.com/kr3600.html is a wealth of information, including complete chip specs. Long ago, I did the opposite. I wired up an external keyboard to match the Apple ][ matrix and wired it up in parallel to the internal keyboard, rather than fix the broken keys. I worked briefly at General Instruments' Hicksville facility in 1982 so I have an affection for their chips. They were the heart of so many video games and speech synthesis. -- jeff jonas

Festivus Battle Royale!
by Jeffrey Brace 29 Nov '19

29 Nov '19

So I was going to bring a bucket of chicken from Popeye's, but I thought I need to do something more in the spirit of Festivus. Festivus includes the feats of strength. So I will buy one Popeye's Chicken sandwich and tell everyone that is the last one in New Jersey. Then I will have a wrestling tournament to determine who gets the sandwich. Afterwards I will whisper to the winner that so-and-so says that Popeye's Chicken sandwich is crap and thinks that Chick-Fil-A's chicken sandwich is the best. And if all that doesn't work to inspire something interesting, then I will setup a floppy disk golf course around campus. -- ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President Vintage Computer Federation

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] much ado about chording keyboards
by Eric Rangell 29 Nov '19

29 Nov '19

Thanks Jeff. To give context to this discussion, I built a chording keyboard for my Replica 1 and Apple 2+ by interfacing an Arduino to the keyboard socket and using 5 arcade momentary switches from Micro Center. I coded it so that my fingers chord a hex nibble and the thumb strobes it into the Arduino, and the LED shows whether you are chording the high nibble or low nibble. It is possible to recode it for other chording mechanisms and add switches to choose a mode. Eric

Workshop (@kennettclassic) this Saturday 11/30
by Bill Degnan 26 Nov '19

26 Nov '19

First of all Karen and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has visited so far. We have had Mike Tomczak, former Commodore VP and author of Home Computer Wars, Evan, Tony, Dean and his son, Alex Bodnar, Bob Roswell, and a lot of locals new to the hobby, and family. We're going to hold over the Commodore History exhibit for a little while longer, until we replace it early in 2020 During Evan's visit we spoke about coordinating our event dates so that there is no overlap, and we will cross promote our events. I set up a meetup.com group that people can signup with for contact about events or you can friend "kennett classic" on facebook, or just visit the kennettclassic.com website regularly. https://www.meetup.com/Kennett-Classic/ https://www.facebook.com/kennettclassiccomp https://www.kennettclassic.com <https://www.facebook.com/kennettclassiccomp> The first workshop is this Saturday and we had two more workshops planned that hopefully don't overlap with anything VCFed is doing. Moving forward we'll intentionally stagger the workshops. Here is the meetup link that provides the details (it's brand-new meetup.com group so don't be shy to at least join the group) https://www.meetup.com/Kennett-Classic/events/266446596/ Same deal as any workshop I have run at my home or the old office in Wilmington since 2005. Clean and triage your hardware before you bring it, bring an extension cord and power strip, bring tools and parts. If you let us know what you're bringing, it helps others plan what they'll bring and to work together on the same types of hardware. For example, pick a theme like "6502 systems" "S-100 bus" "teletypes" etc. Reminds me of when Dan Roganti came to my house to stay over the weekend for workshop, once with his daughters. Dan was a regular at every workshop back in the day. vintagecomputer.net is full of photos (search term workshop) of past workshops from MARCH and VCFed. Directions and Contact: https://www.kennettclassic.com/contact/ For Sale: https://www.kennettclassic.com/hobbyist-shop/ Kennett Square is centrally located south of Phila and north of Baltimore off RTE 1 between Longwood Gardens and Newark Delaware. This is a very nice retail space with restaurants, pubs, hotels, music, other museums and galleries so if you bring the family and they're not really into vintage computers there will be other things to do. See you there! Future events: https://www.kennettclassic.com/calendar/ Bill
