Pick up a MacBook?
by Damir Dzhafarov 23 Aug '19

23 Aug '19

Hi everyone, I’m new to the group. I bought a PowerBook 520c on FB Matketplace a while ago in hopes a family friend could pick it up, but unfortunately, that hasn’t worked out yet. Anyone in the area of Springfield PA who would like to pick it up and maybe play with for a while until we can work out a time for me to get it from you? (I’m in Connecticut.) I’m in no hurry, and wouldn’t mind another vintage computer enthusiast having it for a while. It’s all paid for, so I could just send you contact details for the person and you could work out where to meet (a Starbucks or police station or whatever you’re both comfortable with). Please let know if you might be interested. Thanks.

Compaq Portable 1 (response)

David G thank you for your offer. I don't think it will be necessary for you to bring the your Compaq. Considering my current level I if the issue doesn't jump out as obvious (exploded cap) I don't think I'm capable of tracing it down via comparison. I do look forward to meeting you though and maybe bending your ear for ideas depending on what happens when I get it opened up. Thanks again, Doug P. [Off Topic] - Vintage computers and UPSes
by John Heritage 20 Aug '19

20 Aug '19

Hey folks, just curious For longevity of vintage computers that are hooked up and powered on semi-frequently; I assume any kind of UPS is better than none to try to reduce power spikes, or reduce PSU fatigue from brownouts. I was curious what folks recommendations or thoughts are here? I have a couple of old (~ 15+ year) UPSes that i'm debating replacing the batteries on, and one of them would be for plugging in some vintage hardware. Is there anything I should watch out for? Should I assume these are too old to effectively monitor/protect - or doesnt' that really matter? etc. Thanks! John

[Off Topic] - Vintage computers and UPSes
by Herb Johnson 20 Aug '19

20 Aug '19

I think this subject is on-topic, because vintage computers suffer damage over time due to line-voltage and over-voltage. UPSs can't solve all those problems. But paying attention to the AC power line is important to collectors and users. Shorted tantalum capacitors on DC circuits are a known failure due to both time and over voltage. For example, Heath/Zenith H-89s and H-19s (computer and terminal) expect to operate at 110V AC.T he unregulated side of their 5V DC regulators have capacitors rated at a voltage just below the DC voltage produced - at 110V. When run at 120V or higher, the rated voltage is exceeded and the tantalums "blow". The fix is to replace the caps with higher-voltage devices, and/or reduce AC voltage. That solution won't be found with most UPS. A short-term solution is to use a Variac to reduce AC voltage. Long term, there's step-up/down transformers one can buy for the purpose. Technically-experienced people can make such devices. also: Thank you to Jason Perkins, for his post-link to an article on adjusting a UPS charging voltage. I was aware of this problem but not informed in detail. The article is informative, so thanks! http://www.jjoseph.org/notes/apc_smartups_battery_float_voltage Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Other people's experience may be different, but in my experience, it is rare for a 1970’s era micro-computer schematic to completely match a board, as it was actually manufactured. Component differences and wiring differences are often found, even when comparing schematics that were drawn for a specific version board, to that same version board. You may want to determine how it came from the factory, in order to determine the best course of action for you. Regards, Mike W.

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] AT&T Dataphone - Modem or "Service"?
by Jeffrey Jonas 20 Aug '19

20 Aug '19

Jeff (aka Bags): > ... There was a monitoring service offered as well > (wonders just how much you can monitor a line at 2400 baud) > under the same brand name. My guess: pre-divestiture phone lines were "voice grade": not guaranteed for FAX or data, thus requiring conditioning upon install and monitoring afterwards lest you get crosstalk, static and other interference. Neil Cherry: > I used to use Paradyne 740 muxes to break those out. Ah yes, modem sharing units. A strange kludge: some were "statistically multiplexed" to allow for different speeds, others were round-robin multiplexed, and others merely or-ed all the signals (I used those with software collision detection with per-packet ack-protocol!) > I also recall the Baby Bells delivering a special current loop line > for AP News service (I think it was dry). Those were fun, 28.8 baud. My local library had one of those teletypes clattering out the news. AT&T used to be "American Telephone and TELEGRAPH", thus the data lines! I'm unsure how they competed with Postal Telegraph and Western Union (my grandpa was a telegrapher). It was a sad day when AT&T decommissioned the last telegraph line. I remember the AT&T president saying that they'd remain "American Telephone and Telegraph" in honor of their heritage, but the following president undid that, making the name just "AT&T". Related to that: telegraph lines used to follow the railroad tracks, mostly for the railroad's internal use. Customer telegrams were sent when the lines were otherwise idle. Years later, right of way was a key part for competing phone companies: citing https://www.npr.org/2012/10/15/162963607/sprint-born-from-railroad-telephon… Sprint Born From Railroad, Telephone Businesses Melissa Block explores the long family history of the companies that comprise what became Sprint. It all began in Kansas in the late 19th century and came to include a long distance system created by the Southern Pacific Railroad Internal Network Telecommunications, or SPRINT. -- jeff jonas

I have been told it’s scheduling conflicts, but my schedule issues are the same as always so.... I don't think this should be a list discussion, but since you brought it up, I will reply. Everyone knows that weekends (usually Saturdays), sometimes on Wednesdays, and very rarely other times are when I'm at the museum. For the last year-ish you made it clear that Saturdays/Wednesdays generally do not work for you. My schedule is less flexible as of last week due to my new job (conventional M-F/9-5 although I may sometimes get Wed. for working remotely). You also asked about working in the museum/warehouse solo. Access to the keys and the trust/responsibility of working there solo is reserved senior members who've proven themselves. Also most of the jobs require a lot of knowledge about computer history. There is absolutely no personal reason behind any of this, and all are welcome in our group ... even Corey (back at ya, dude)...

“That’s what I was told, but the reality is that I don’t get called on to volunteer at all anymore and used to be called on every other week or so. “ Not everyone is appropriate for every job that needs doing. I also don’t always wait to be called but will reach out when I have available time and see if any help is needed. Sometimes it’s things I’m not “qualified” to help with!! (Not my area of expertise) “ I don’t feel comfortable going to workshops when I haven’t even been involved. And my knowledge of vintage tech is not as great as my interest, so I rarely can participate in forums.” That one I understand, but that’s also on you too. Involvement and amount of other participation has nothing to do with workshops. People come to workshops when they can and when they want to. Sometimes to fix stuff, sometimes to learn, sometimes (more often than not) to do both!! My knowledge of vintage tech was very limited when I started with VCF, especially because it relied on my memory from stuff I did 30-40 years earlier! (Not the most reliable for sure!) As time has passed I’ve learned tons, but my focus is still very limited compared to many others. My background is a user and I have no experience in electrical, programming, engineering, etc. What I know now (still extremely limited) has been from getting involved in workshops and learning on my own as well. Best advice I can give you is to be more proactive and seek out involvement instead of waiting to be asked. That, and perhaps reach out to those that organize the various events (workshops, warehouse work, etc) directly as opposed to a generic airing of perceived grievances on the main list. Laura, I'm a good example of timing. I have kids and and a challenging work schedule, and summer is especially rough for me and I basically become a ghost until at least September, to the point where the only time I hear anything is when I read the mailing list. When I have bandwidth, I offer to show up, but sometimes the type of work that needs doing is not in my wheelhouse and I'm declined. Otherwise, I come to workshops when I can. No need to say goodbye. In the specific instance of a PET, I happen to like the crispness of the original mono CRT (no shadow mask, no color bleed). If I could find 9" mono LCDs, that would be great but it's just not something anyone bothers to make. There used to be mono LCDs for laptops (and I have some) but it would take a custom adapter to drive those from the signals from a PET (video + H sync/V sync) or a composite conversion of it. -ethan

Pet with 9" screen
by David Hoelzer 19 Aug '19

19 Aug '19

I've been slowly working my way through rebuilding the CRT board for a 9" 2001-32 PET. As I've been working, I've been discovering that the components on the board don't all match the specs in the documentation, but that's ok... Eventually I'll get together all of the pieces I'm missing and reassemble everything.. I'm working right now to figure out why the schematics call for a mylar capacitor but my board had a differently rated electrolytic. Anyway... I'm seriously thinking about taking a 9" LCD panel with a composite input and wiring up a composite converter circuit to the internal video connector on the board. I would dismount the CRT tube and put the LCD in in its place. Of course, I'll preserve the removed parts for posterity... but does this offend your sense of vintage stuff? Personally, it seems practical to me since I'd like to do some things with the PET... and the CRT is a potential major source of problems in addition to an energy hog/heat source. LGR video - Exploring a MASSIVE Retro Computer Warehouse!
by David K 16 Aug '19

16 Aug '19

Not sure if anyone saw this. It is a video of a guy on YouTube exploring a now mostly-closed place called "Computer Reset". It looks to be a place where they repaired computers as well as bought old computers and more. Some of the stuff is vintage stuff new in box. It puts Kemner's to shame. They are open to collector's and in the last part of the video they mention an apparent willingness to give/sell things to museums so I thought I would pass this along. If nothing else it is very interesting to watch. The catch is it is near Dallas, TX so that likely makes it a non-starter for most. But I believe there is a VCF-midwest who might be made aware of it. Enjoy! David

GW-DEC-1: A New DEC Prototyping Board
by systems_glitch 15 Aug '19

Connor Krukosky and I have been working on laying out a new quad-height DEC protoboard, which can also be sheared down into a dual-height board. Full announce on the VC Forums: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.php?71177-GW-DEC-1-A-New-Quad-Height-… These should be available within a month or so. I'll be putting up a preorder soon to gauge interest in the production run, which as usual will have hard gold plating on the edge connectors. I haven't gotten a quote for the cost, but I expect them to be $30-40 each for production boards. They'll be available at VCF Midwest as well as online! Thanks, Jonathan

Unix demo @ Bell Labs - June 5
by Evan Koblentz 15 Aug '19

This is tentative / not yet 100%: Bell Labs (at the historic Murray Hill, NJ location) is planning a Unix event on Wednesday, May 5. They invited us to do a mini-version of Unix Town that afternoon. Important details: - We'd probably have five or six tables. - This is NOT a public event; it's invitation-only by BL. - Our goal is to do demos for important people. So I'm gauging initial interest: who is able to take a day off from work that afternoon and come to NJ for this?

Random thought: VCF East clones exhibit
by Herb Johnson 10 Aug '19

> > William Sudbrink > Wed Aug 7 11:38:28 EDT 2019 > > When does cloning stop and an industry start? > > When did ISA bus PCs stop being clones? > Are all S-100 bus systems Altair clones? > [are all SS-50 boxes SWTPC 6800 clones?] Bill, the answer on S-100 and SS-50 is, "they are an industry", they are not clones, they are bus-compatibles. That's a good call I think. One might make an exception for the IMSAI as an "Altair clone". I do, on my Web site, I make a case about it. .. but what also happened is that half a dozen or so "Altair compatible" board companies (IMSAI could hav been one) collectively decided to stop calling their products "Altair compatible" and started calling them "S-100 compatible". They settled on a bus that was not 100% Altair original. Later they created the IEEE-696 (Compupro) bus which was a great improvement. Hundreds of companies big and small made S-100 boards and systems. Few of THEM are "Altair clones" but some copied some other's boards. The SS-50 was also a consensus among makers of SWTPC-compatible boards, I don't know the details. They were fairly interchangeable early on, but boards got MUCH better and differentiated later on. Dozens of SS-50 companies. Keep in mind: these were early "hobby computer" bus architectures. They weren't "invented" to be standards for other companies. They weren't products of big-name corporations. They *created* an industry. STDbus, Multibus, DEC-bused, other "industrial" bussed computers: also had their cloned or design-copied product competitors. These came from big companies: Pro-LOG, Intel, DEC. Each bus has its own history. These weren't hobby systems at the time; they have become hobby systems. On the IBM-PC. I'm no expert except I lived through the era. There's a history of 1) making ISA-bus compatible cards. 2) Making MS-DOS based computers (some before the IBM PC) that ran many or some but not all IBM PC programs 3) Computers that looked a lot like IBM PCs and had a mobo with ISA slots, but were maybe 80% IBM PC compatible (whatever that means) like say Heath/Zenith. Calling most of these "clones" would not be satisfactory because they weren't called "clones" at the time. Percent of compatibility, was a thing, once. And then there were the Tiawan made PCs (or at least mobos) which very very closely copied the IBM-PC models. They were called, within the industry, at the time, "PC clones". That's definitive. Less definitive, companies like Compaq. They got ahead of IBM at times. Clones? Enhhh.... kind of misses the point. "Compatibles with better or worse features." Before you start posting counter-arguments, let me explain where I'm going. These considerations aren't written on clay tablets. They are part of a discussion. An exhibit is also a kind of discussion. So I think these are the sorts of things one could exhibit and represent, if one wants to have an exhibit about quote clones endquote. The exhibits and the exhibitors and the attendees, can make the arguments. So what I said above, doesn't have to be absolutely correct. It just stakes out territories. Also: I take Evan's point, and decades-later copies of various vintage computers are not "clones". At least they are not vintage clones. They are modern replicas made to exactly represent vintage originals. I think that's a different discussion. Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] AT&T Dataphone - Modem or "Service"?
by Jeffrey Jonas 08 Aug '19

08 Aug '19

The short-short of it: citing http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/att/000-111_ATT_Documentation_Guide_Nov87.pdf Dataphone is a registered trademark of AT&T I saw the Dataphone label on all sorts of modems: SDLC, async, dialup and probably leased line as well. Citing Justin Jernigan's posting > It was a Service, appears to still be, > though likely no longer actively sold. > It's one of the first digital services tariffed by the telephone companies ... > This was pre-divestiture, so service and equipment were "one" Set the wayback machine to 1976 (the US Bicentennial). "Ma Bell" was a regulated monopoly, personified in many ways, most memorably Lily Tomlin's character Ernestine the switchboard operator. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lily_Tomlin But internally, Bell System folks were extremely proud of their work, creating and maintaining "the best phone service in the world". You were not allowed to own phone equipment: it was all leased thus all the Western Electric phones saying "not for sale". Add an extension phone and you'd get a "service call" to force you to disconnect it. Even after-market equipment was forbidden, such as the "name caller" auto-dialer (which pulse-dialed numbers you filled onto a plastic belt with an electrographic pencil). New York City high schools all had an IBM RJE (remote job entry) terminal: card reader and line printer, to a modem the operator had to manually dial with a rotary phone (no smart modems, yet!). At the other end was an IBM 360/370 running HASP or JES for batch jobs. As to the rack of modems the Original Poster remembers: that's probably intended for the receiving end: answer-only or answer-mostly mode. UUCP was the only way I was aware of AT&T hardware weirdness where the dialer was separate from the modem. -- jeff jonas

Thanks Jeff/Neil/others! Yeah I did some more research myself and it seems that it was basically a brand for all the various lines and hardware. There was a monitoring service offered as well (wonders just how much you can monitor a line at 2400 baud) under the same brand name. I'll have to post some pictures sometime - I have/had a ton of the outlet strips from those server cabinets, and my uncle got a bunch of the aluminum paneling from the front doors of the cabinets (some silver some wood grained) that he used around his house that is still there (complete with logos). And as a side note - I found an interesting tidbit about a Dataphone modem having kill someone due to a failing capacitor: http://www.decadecounter.com/vta/articleview.php?item=111 (I definitely remember seeing these in the piles amongst all the dataphone stuff, but most of the stuff in the server cabinets were the smaller modem units). It was a Service, appears to still be, though likely no longer actively sold. It's one of the first digital services tariffed by the telephone companies (started in 1973.) Started as "Digital Data Service" but was renamed by AT&T as "Dataphone Digital Service". Both voice and data transmission are serviced at speeds from 2.4 to 56Kbps. This was pre-divestiture, so service and equipment were "one", I recall in the early 80s having a "modem" that had Dataphone on the front and the Bell System logo, but it wasn't an analog device -- or didn't work with POTS lines. >On 8/6/19 4:26 PM, Jeff G via vcf-midatlantic wrote: > >Data-Phone (Dataphone) were a series of product that allowed devices >(often computers but I don't know it if was limited to computers) to communicate >across the telephone network.
