IBM Series/1 Collecting?

Hi. All: Over the years, I've owned many systems, going back to 8080-based hardware. I've also had more than a few PDP-11 and MicroVAX systems. I'm now looking for something a little different and could use some guidance. In the early eighties, I worked for a company in NJ that refurbished IBM mainframe systems. They also sold Series/1 mini's. One of the partners was even developing the hardware interface and software for a cartridge tape backup system. For some reason, I now have the urge to play with a Series/1 system of my own. Thinking back, I've seen very little - if anything - about someone owning one. Perhaps there's a good reason for this. I'm also not seeing too much on used systems, peripherals, or software - like languages - I could use to develop some applications. Perhaps there's a good reason for that, too. Is it worth pursuing the acquisition of this old system or is it best left alone? Any constructive advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Cory Sickles

Asante EN/SC adaptor?

People are mentioning my name, regarding Mac SCSI to Ethernet adapters, because I have sold them in the past: http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/m_net.html I don't have any currently, and of course I can be asked privately. I'm interested in buying and in selling them. Many 68K Mac owners want these to "get their Mac on the Internet", so they are not cheap. An AAUI Friendlynet adapter was mentioned. That's Apple's AAUI to RJ45 Ethernet adapter I believe. That's not an Ethernet controller device, it's a mechanical cabling adapter. Herb -- Herbert R. Looking for Tandy 2000 disk and keyboard

All – A friend of mine is trying to restore his Tandy 2000 system, so I sent him a bunch of floppy images in IMD format, but it seems that one of them is corrupted. Specifically, I’m looking for the Videotex Plus disk (26-5260). I also just realized that Bitsavers doesn’t have a Tandy/RS section so at least I want to collect my disk images and upload them there. If anyone has any other disks, please send them to me so I can upload them As a side note, he gave me one of his spare 2000HD systems but it has no keyboard. Museum report

I was at the museum both days this weekend. We had a small but steady amount of visitors. Steve A. came by yesterday for a while. Jeff B. and I both helped with InfoAge's Halloween event last night. Jeff visited again today to help me with some docent planning. Laura helped in the warehouse tonight from 6:30-8:30. We moved some things around to make space for an upcoming large artifact...

Unloading help needed week of 10/29

It's about 95% definite that we are receiving a VERY LARGE computer around Halloween-time. I should know 100% sometime tomorrow. I do not yet know which day it will arrive: a truck is bringing it to us from the mountain time zone. It's leaving its current home on the 25th and then I will be able to track it. Estimate is middle of that week. I gave a heads-up to one of InfoAge's forklift drivers, but I will need help!! It's going to be hard work unloading an 18-wheeler and the driver isn't going to wait all day for us. Who can I count on to help that day? Don't leave me to attempt this solo. Everything should be on casters or pallets. I don't anticipate much lifting, but it's the quantity that I fear.

We have a modest amount of visitors today. I had an hour between the museum closing and the IA staff meeting, so I did some warehouse things. There was a part of George that I put with the rest of the analog computing items, and there was a teletype table that goes with an older teletype we already donated to NJARC, so I gave them the table too. Asante EN/SC adaptor?

Hey all, I have an interest in getting an Asante EN/SC adaptor (SCSI-to-Ethernet adaptor for Mac), and I suspect at least one of you (*cough* Herb *cough*) might have one I could acquire or purchase for a modest sum. Any version is fine; regular, mini or micro. Ideally I'd like a working one. If it helps, it's for the greater good: I want to reverse engineer and replicate it, as well as try and write some drivers for NetBSD, since it's one of the only reliable ways to get early PowerBooks on Ethernet. - Dave
