In a vacuum, I absolutely love it, but "stepping on consignment" is a real concern as commission paid on sales is a not insignificant source of operating revenue for the Fest. I understand that attendees trade on the side/sly, friend to friend, and I'll admit I've made a parking lot sale or three over the years. He co-edits Studies in Computing Culture book series for Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Press. Paul Shaffer is the ENIAC Historian at the University of Pennsylvania, where he serves as a steward and interpreter of the world’s first general-purpose electronic digital computer. He has spent more than three decades championing the ENIAC artifact - researching its history, preserving its story, and translating its technical significance. A helicopter pilot, Paul brings an aviator’s perspective on systems, risk, and disciplined procedure to his work in technology and public history. He is also a commercial UAS (drone) instructor. Paul is known for making ENIAC both legible and vivid: not only as a landmark machine, but as a human achievement shaped by ingenuity, constraint, and collaboration. An idea for trading gear at VCF East (and perhaps wider).

Hey everyone. I was chatting a bit about this on the VCF Discord '#for-sale' channel, and got some good feedback / interest, so I'd like to toss it out here and see if we want to raise up the visibility a bit. I wrote an application called ClaimIt. It's designed for communities that tend to have focused interests, and are more interested in sharing and supporting the community than making a quick buck. The idea is to have a place to search, browse, and, well, CLAIM items that people are giving away or selling. The most important aspect is that you can SEE if someone has claimed an item or not (so this prevents the 'Is this still available???' responses), and if so, you can put yourself down as an alternate, so the seller can say "Well, bob claimed this, but he flaked, so dave, it's yours." https://claimit.stonekeep.com/ There's a VCF community there already (I only have one item there), but in the lead up for VCF East, is this something we'd like to encourage people to use? Now, one of the things I've been avoiding is making it 'yet another site i have to go look at' - to that end, it can email you when things are listed in a community, and will email you when someone claims one of your items. In addition, there's hooks to update Slack (and shortly, Discord) when an item is put up for claim. I didn't want to put this on the VCF Discord without discussing it with people first.
