Muscle needed

Ian and I build a simple ramp to remove the VAX 9000 racks from their pallets. We got two racks de-palleted, but the other racks were too heavy for he and I to handle alone. A few clones of Ian may have been enough :) but all my strength is legs, not upper body. I don't know exactly how many racks are left to de-pallet. Probably around a dozen. It would help a lot if we could tackle at least some of them this weekend. Then the supercomputer will take up less space in the warehouse. Also, then we could put a couple of racks of it in the museum!

Repair Day Next Sat 12th - What to expect?

Just a notice that I'll be bringing a bunch more stuff to give away or sell for $10 max at the repair day. Some Atari 8bit stuff, odds and Ends, Monitors (Commodore) and extra junk that is useful but that I will never use. Trades are accepted first before I give any away or sell - so if you have something interested and Unixy, bring it and lets see what we have. Anyone that can help me with fixes will also get first dibs on the give-away stuff. I'll also be bringing a SunU10 to try and get it to boot, An Apple IIFX to try and re-cap, and some PS to try and recap, assuming I get the caps. And a Tandy 600 that won't turn on. Looks like i'll be bringing my A2000 and try to copy some floppies for another member. I'm not that awesome w/ soldering, mostly due to lack of experience. I'm bringing my own soldering iron. This will be my first one- just want to check and make sure what is going to happen will happen - is the main room used like at Festivus? Assuming that ppl that come must bring everything they need for work, or are there things there from VCF to use? (Irons, monitors, network etc) ? Thanks! -andy

Looking for a Kalok IDE drive

"Why??? I’m looking for something to use with an IDE adapter on my Lisa, and [I] want it to sound interesting." It's a little amusing, to ask for hard drives based on acoustics. I'm an old person from a different time; I guess it's a thing now. (Yes, I know there's videos of stacks of drives playing tunes, thank you.) When drive stepping was noisier, it was a diagnostic, more convenient than a blinking "drive activity" LED. I'm guessing, the Lisa may not accept any ancient IDE hard-drive. I know that some really old IDE hard drives have "the wrong" IDE interface (8 bit data and not standard 16 bit data). Is there a list of IDE hard drive brand/models the Lisa could reasonably use? So - is there really a demand for "acoustic" IDE hard drives? Also, with a sound like a winding up jet engine as they start up? I can dig up some of these. No warranties. Herb -- Herbert R. Is there an oscilloscope and a logic probe available for use? I want to attempt to repair the JrAccelerator board for one of my PCjr machines. I don't have schematics for it so everything is going to be by scoping, eyeballing, skill, and luck. Hopefully it's nothing major. I know the system works as I've pulled the board and put the 8088 back in and it started up just fine. I will also be bringing my Amiga 2000HD as Andy is bring me a copy of workbench. Hello all - I have an Epson Equity I PC clone here that uses a special keyboard which I do not have. The system boots and works flawlessly, but lacking a compatible keyboard means I cannot do much at all with it besides stare at the DOS boot screen. :P The port on the motherboard is an 8-pin DIN connector. If anyone has information on the model of said keyboard or any leads on where to acquire one, please let me know. There is a section in the manual which states if two jumpers on the motherboard are shorted certain revisions should be able to work with a standard XT keyboard, however I have not tested this out yet and would prefer to acquire an original keyboard if at all possible. [OT] Anyone Want a Decent Onkyo HDMI/Component/SVideo Switching Receiver and Speakers?

All, I have a quite nice Onkyo TX-SR875 tuner, with remote, and a pair of Polk Monitor 50s and a 12" Polk subwoofer, and I don't have room for any of it. Unfortunately, 3-year-old hands can get to any place that I put the tuner, and that just won't work. Anyone interested? I'd like to get at least a few bucks for these, as they still sell for decent prices. I was asking $150 on Craigslist, based on a discount from the most recent sales on eBay, for the tuner, but I'd definitely do a deal for anyone in this group. The speakers are probably worth at least $50, so maybe $175 for all of it? I'll (hopefully, my wife is sick, and I'm hoping that she'll be well before Saturday) be at the workshop, this weekend, and would be happy to bring them. Thanks! - Alex

While I'm flattered to be mentioned in this discussion, I'm nowhere near on the same level as Quinn. She's a legend. I would be comfortable doing something on Friday, and a homebrew panel of some sort sounds like a ton of fun. Now that I've had some practice with the crowd speaking at DEFCON and VCFMW last year, it sounds like something within my wheelhouse. However, back to the subject at hand of keynotes on Saturday & Sunday. She's indeed awesome, and maybe we can get her to VCF West this summer. Here on the east coast, we've got Alexander "Z" Pierson and his Cactus 6502 computer. He won our top prize at VCF East last year.

Folks, She’s not very close, being in California, but my suggestion is Quinn Dunki. She built her own 6502 computer from scratch, named Veronica, and documented the journey in her blog ( http://quinndunki.com/blondihacks/?page_id=1761) She is also a big fan of the Apple II, 68000, and vintage computers. She attends the Apple Kansasfest regularly. I keep hoping she’d come East for the VCF. I think she would be interesting and have a fairly wide appeal. - Crawford

Amiga software help.

I recently acquired an Amiga 2000HD to my collection. I got a box of various floppies from a friend but no complete OS set. The OS on the hard drive is partially corrupt or at least missing files. Thw system has a 2.0 Rom in it but I have a 3.x Rom as well, if I can get a full set of Amiga OS 3.1 floppies. I also have an XT Emulation card and no drivers for that either. If someone could help out with a set of OS/Workbench disks, it would be greatly appreciated. And if it's OS 3.1, I'll have to swap my ROM and hopefully not have to reformat the hard drive since I don't have a backup.

Oh man, well I guess I have to let the cat out of the bag now that I was actually planning on doing a workstation Unix exhibit for this upcoming East as my first exhibit. The main reason for this aside from my love of Unix and all of its flavors is that we are approaching on the 50th birthday of Unix itself this year! It would have been a great way to celebrate Unix and its impact to the world. Hearing all about this though, this makes things even more better! I already talked to Andy on the matter and we are considering on doing a group/team effort for this exhibit now. More people means more examples of Unix for us to show off and really show off its impact in computing and in the industry. I already have been hunting down examples for the exhibit for more than a year now and have a NeXT system, a few Suns, a few SGI's that need some work, and hopefully soon an HP-UX machine. I am also hoping on getting my hands on a AT&T PC7300/3B1 Unix PC from Glitch in the near future as well once we can work things out. Also while I do not want to jump the gun too soon I might also be getting my hands on a PDP-11 as well through some remarkable luck, but this is still up in the air. A mega Unix workstation/system exhibit this year for East would be genuinely awesome, and knowing that this will be a team effort will make things all the better!

Why is hardware development any less relevant than software? Chip design IS computer history as much as or more so than software. Just because she was from Commodore doesn’t make it a narrow topic. If an Intel or TI chip designer was available, would you accept them? And I appreciate the C history but I see Tony’s point. All talks we have had could be considered narrow by some definition. Why dismiss a Commodore chip designer so hastily? The point was apparently missed, and I blame myself for not being clearer. The C keynote was an example of a topic, not meant as an example of a poorly attended keynote (and I never mentioned if they were or were not heavily attended) The fact that the tent is no longer used will also hopefully increase the attendance of all keynotes!! But to my point that I apparently did not make clear, focus on the one sentence that matters. The fact that it’s already January and the process is just starting....... I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss anyone until we have someone we don’t want to dismiss. End of line. Tony

Looking for a Kalok IDE drive

I’m looking for a working Kalok IDE drive. Yes, a stepper motor IDE. I believe the models KL-3100 and KL-343 are both IDE. I’d also entertain another stepper IDE drive. I already have a Seagate 157a and 351a. Why??? I’m looking for something to use with an IDE adapter on my Lisa, and want it to sound interesting. Andy's 2019 Clean out - more complete systems

Hello- I'm really trying to clean out my stuff and get rid of things that work but that I will never use. Some are of little value, and I've been bringing that stuff up and giving it away (a bunch is coming next Saturday). However I have a few systems (Mac, Amiga, Powebook etc) that are of some value and I want to see them go somewhere useful. But due to recent shipping hazards I'm not willing to ship them- so meeting in person at InfoAge is a great solution to this problem. I don't expect ebay crazy prices for them- just something fair. And I want to solve for some people finding out before others... therefore... What I've decided is to do a first-price sealed-bid auction - anyone interested should reply to me off-list. I'll send you a list of the stuff. You reply back with your bid. Friday I'll announce to the entire group who has won what. I'll bring the stuff to InfoAge. Anyone ever adjust the yoke on a 1970’s Sony trinitron?

So I have a 1974-75ish Sony KV-9200 color Trinitron TV and I need to rotate the yoke a little because the image is crooked. I removed the rubber wedges but the yoke won’t budge. I decided to walk away for a few hours and just took another look and I did just notice there is a small clamp on the end of the tube neck that could be loosened up, but before I do that I was wondering if that is what it’s intended for to hold the yoke in place against the rubber wedges? I don’t want to have to adjust the convergence so I haven’t loosed it yet just Incase that is wrong. I’m also worried because the neck is the most fragile part of the tube and don’t want to break it. This is all I have left to do on this TV. I replaced every electrolytic cap, adjusted b+, cleaned all the controls and refreshed the entire exterior. Any advise would be helpful. W.r.t. the Sun 3/60 thread, I managed to set one up running SunOS 4.1 diskless off a modern Linux machine. It's not that difficult (basically configure DHCP, TFTP, and NFS, all of which live on in modern software) and solves the noisy SCSI drive problem.

This has been on my TODO list for years, so it's a good way to start off the new year. I have a Sun 3/60 with 24MB and CG4 video which I've been meaning to set up as a diskless client from my Linux server. Until I get a keyboard adapter cobbled together for a Type 4 keyboard, I'm using a serial console. Diagnostics all check out from the PROM. There's a document floating around which describes one user's efforts to netboot his 3/60: http://sites.inka.de/pcde/help/sunos_network_boot.html I used that as a starting point, but it was written in 2004 so there are additional steps required. For one thing, bootparamd is no longer included in Fedora Linux (since FC25), so I had to make some changes to the FC24 SRPM for bootparamd to get it compiled and repackaged for FC28. Also, FC28 by default has NFS version 2 disabled so you have to change options in /etc/nfs.conf to enable UDP and version 2. OT: MAGFest 2019 - This Weekend

While it pales in comparison to the VCF East event MAGFest is coming up this weekend. MAGFest is a 4 day video game music and gaming event in the DC metro area. There is a computer museum room run by friends (and consistent VCF East attendees.) It's mostly plastic micros and early mainstream desktop computers -- so nothing too wild for this audience. They also have some various more rare game consoles in the museum on PVMs. The museum room is around 3000 sqft, and everything is pretty much sit down and play. There is also a 30,000 sqft arcade room (this part of the event is where I'm involved), a 30,000 sqft console gaming room, tabletop and board games, indie game area (10,000sqft+ maybe?) Oh, and stages. A good number of musical acts from nerdcore hip hop to jazz to metal to rock to who knows what. There is also a jam clinic for people who want to bring their musical instrument and I guess improve your improvisational skills, or jam rooms where you can sign up to play with others. And new this year is a demoparty, where people will be working I believe on making new demos. I saw mention of AGA Amiga and C64, and I would assume PC. It's kind of hard to sum up, but some parts run 24x7 (not the museum but the arcade does), and there should be over 15,000 people there. If any VCF'ers are headed there hit me up, I am usually around the arcade but visit the museum and usually catch a concert or two! If there is info for VCF East, I can print some copies out and the museum people would be happy to post them around.
