Sol 20 with Toyota Monitor $1500

A guy I know is selling his Sol. He is in Brooklyn and he wants to sell this and have it picked up. He won't ship and I don't blame him. I have a picture but I know the email thread doesn't allow pictures so I can send to you Here is his post Processor Technology Sol-20 Terminal Computer + Koyo Monitor + Manuals Selling a piece of digital history. Purchased in 1977, it predates the Big Three: the Apple II, Commodore PET and Radio Shack Tandy TRS-80. It includes 24K RAM, GraphicAdd board, Music System board, Koyo Monitor, 9 manuals, data cassettes (I don’t know if they are still readable). Sadly, this beauty no longer functions properly but the right hands might be able to bring it back to life. It does power up, but the output is a random series of characters (see photo). All IC chips are in sockets, so it’s possible that reseating them might help, but I’m no hardware expert. It is being sold as is. Cassettes: Basic 5, Extended Cassette Basic, Music System, Gamepac1, Games. It’s a beauty to display for a collector or a promising project to restore for a techie.

NavCore (Navigational Computer Systems, Inc.)

VCF recently acquired a donation from the daughter of John Paul Jones, Jr (now deceased). Apparently he was the founder of NavCore which operated out of Norristown, PA. He was a prolific inventor who had as many as 100 U.S. patents (I've only found 50 or so of them). We went through most of his donations which are mostly paper materials such as brochures, company reports, patent applications, books and photographs. We received a few of his computer inventions as well. So far no one I have talked to has heard of this company. I'm just curious if anyone else has. Hey all, I have a coworker who needs an SGI IO9 card (used in Origin 350 systems, among others) rather urgently. Does anyone have any available? He's found one potential option from a parts vendor, but it's a -005 rather than the -006 in the system, and it's unclear if there's any difference (the National Stock Number registry indicates all variants from -001 through -006 are compatible, but that's not exactly gospel). I had a job crimping lotsa RJ45 "ice cubes". 1) use GOOD TOOLS. I prefer the Tyco/Amp RJ45 Die Crimp Tool for Cat5. It punches down all the connectors equally, unlike a hinged tool. The cutter would be perfect if it had a depth/length gauge. Cut too short and the wires don't go all the way into the connector. Too long and the strain relief won't work. I find a clothes-pin style jacket stripper is just fine. 2) Put on the rubber boot FIRST! What color? That's up to you! If you get the pretty pink ones, that means I really like you :-) 3) My way of handling EIA/TIA-T568B - spread out the 4 pairs like a star - untwist each pair using the removed jacket like a straw around one wire - flatten the wires using something smooth like needle nose pliers or a metal bar - work with pairs, not individual wires - due to the center pairs being intertwined, I start from the center and work outwards: + start with the BLUE pair, solid to the LEFT + put the GREEN pair AROUND it, solid to the RIGHT + ORANGE pair to the LEFT + BROWN pair to the RIGHT - check the wires: SOLID colors always ALTERNATE with striped wires - insert into the "ice cube" connector - check the colors. again. - check all wires touch the end - check the jacket is inserted as far as possible, so the strain relief works - THEN crimp - test the cable with a cable tester. Really nice cable testers have multiple remote ends to identify up to 4 cables, and have a TDR (time domain reflectometer) to measure the cable length. > Include 10-base-2 for those who want to recreate that style of networking. I know this probably will have zero interest besides me... But is there any interest in doing a class on how to create/repair Cat-5 cables? I have a repair kit, but it came with non-pass through cable endings, and it took me literally an hour to make one) (the glitchwrks email just triggered my brain because they were next to the soldering classroom at VCF east) Also, one thing about the VCF East program that I missed when reviewing it and only realized it after I got to VCF East. It had a start time but not an ending time for breakfast... I think part of the resistance is the fact that Windows as it was is largely still with us, at least in spirit, and that the first exposure people around my age had to it was in a work environment. So we don’t exactly have fond memories of playing with it. I know I didn’t have fun loading it from diskette for hours and trying to get real mode drivers to play nice. For us, early 8 and 16-bit micros were fun, PCs were (mostly) work. For us who like to tinker with hardware in the 90s, PCs started becoming more and more black boxes. That being said, thirty is indeed retro. And I believe many are nostalgic for it and would be interested, especially if introduced with a short history of computer GUI’s, Windows evolution and the challenges we faced configuring and running it in the days of ‘Plug and pray’ which would still involve a short side trip Into memory and IRQ conflicts. ?End of an era?: The last RadioShack in Maryland is closing its doors

I'm not satisfied with the "suits killed Radio Shack" suggestions. Web search about the 21st century history of Radio Shack - or searching one's memory of the last 30 years - is that it was competing with direct online sales of components and consumer electronics at lower prices and more selection. Retail companies had all kinds of issues in the period. "Amazon"? "WalMart"? They still do. Details are business history matters that are usually outside the general discussions here. The question implied by the subject thread, is about the future of the Radio Shack name as a storefront (presumably in the USA where most of us are). Web search takes some time but finds a general answer soon enough. I'll be brief and provide actual references. Wikipedia says the "RadioShack" brand is owned since 2023 by Unicomer, bought from another corporation that bought up Radio Shack several years prior. Wikipedia says Unicomer Caribbean Holding Co. Ltd is a multinational retailing and consumer finance group headquartered in San Salvador, El Salvador with regional offices in Miami, Trinidad, Jamaica, and Costa Rica. It operates several chains of retail brands in the consumer durables sector, specializing in furniture, audio & video, appliances, and electronics in Central America, the Caribbean, South America, and United States. ... But the radioshack.com Web site, shows NO stores today, anywhere, in their "find a store" maps. It mentions plans to come back in the US and something about stores through Central America. The twice.com article references a CES 2025 show appearance by Unicomer to promote Radio Shack and its storefront future as RadioShack USA and as a product brand. Unicomer seems to have a modest storefront presence, a few hundred stores in South and Central America and Caribbean. As vintage computerists of age, we've seen old electronic and computer brand-names, sold and reused to tag modern consumer products, occasionally computing products, sometimes services. Not too many vintage retailers come back as actual stores. The concept of brick-store franchises itself is endangered. Anyone in NoVA have a SN76489 IC to sell?

Have an event Friday thru Sunday and looking to source a SN76489 sound IC. Pulled out my old colecovision and no sound from the coleco side. I tested it at the IC pin 7 by feeding that into the RCA audio in on monitor and nada. 2600 VCS adapter audio works fine, futzed with the RF modulator, all that. Going to hit up eStarland around noon and see if they have anything but figured I would ask here. - Ethan

VCF East - thanks and suggestions

Thanks to everyone (too many to name!) for another excellent VCF East. The talks, exhibits, management, and so much more were great. I have some suggestions: Food: Having a decent onsite food vendor with a variety of edibles for everyone was well-received by many, and it kept people from leaving the event for food. Their prices were kinda high, but I doubt we could do much better. More vegetarian food options (veggie hoagies, veggie burgers?) would be welcome. Consignment: Despite some bugs in the Nexopos label-printing system (which I reported last week; maybe they can be fixed for next year) my overall impression is the larger space with lots of tables and shelves was way better than before. The space was filled with people and tons of vintage equipment! Next year having even more tables and shelving units would be prudent, because word will spread and more sellers and buyers will come next year. Allowing everyone to look up what's for sale in Nexopos would be nice, so it would be more like an Easter egg hunt. I had a ZEBRA/MOTOROLA TC510K 'walk away'. But an alert and thoughtful consignment staffer noticed it abandoned where buyers line up to pay and he looked up the label info in the system and called my mobile phone to tell me about it. So I was able to come and get it back. Bravo! Preventing items from 'walking away' without being paid for is challenging. Having items checked against a receipt at the exit could work, but would cause a bottleneck and other problems. RFID tags with a de-activator at POS and a sensor/alarm at the exit would be costly, and thieves could simply remove the RFID tag. Maybe some overhead cameras and a DVR could record who's walking out with what for later review. We could have Security volunteers (who don't look like volunteers) walking around covertly watching for 'shrinkage'. I think it would be good to have a 'public' computer there running the Nexpos system for folks to enter items they brought in at the last minute and didn't have time to enter. I brought in my modified Tandy 102 w/TPDD2 drive and a 1974 Commodore RPN calculator at the last minute, but didn't have time to enter them into the system beforehand. Someone asked me, but selling stuff 'under the table' would've deprived VCF of a commission. Speaking of commissions, about how much was earned from Consignment? Sellers: Not everyone can come to VCF multiple days. I could only come Saturday and bringing my items in for consignment that morning was complicated. Later I was told I couldn't be paid for my hundreds of dollars of consignment sales till Sunday--when I'd be 100 miles away. I'd specified 'cash' in the system. There should be a way for sellers to pick up their money at the end of each day, or have a drone or homing pigeon deliver their cash the next day. -bernieS

VCF East

Let me be the first to say that the show was an improvement over the last shows, even though it did rain on the parade. Food was definitely an improvement over previous events and I hope the vendor will continue to be at VCF East and maybe the Swapmeet! Having Consignment in the Large building was a great improvement as well, even though there seems to be no way around the long lines in and checkout. Consider this: Having a Swapmeet in the same space as the consignment. Not during VCF East, but at multiple times during the year. Yes, it is much smaller than outdoor space but it will allow you to have it more times during the year and the weather issue is minimal. Justin, I was Consignment manager this year, and am interested in what you have to add to your concerns. Shoplifting and other shrinkage have always been a concern in this venue, just like any retail establishment, for all the years it has existed. Bigger and better Consignment venues, like we had at our disposal this year, do make the issue more challenging. Hello Bob, For years there was no definition of what "being a member of MARCH/VCF" was. Starting with Steering Committee elections in 2020 we said being on the vcf-midatlantic discussion list meant that you were a member. Other organizations are clear in who is a member and who is not. So we wanted to do something a little more clear. The national board had been discussing how and what benefits for a membership for a few years before we decided in August 2022 to make a simple paid membership which had a simple benefit (for the time being). We also wanted membership to not just be a local (Wall, NJ) thing, but countrywide (worldwide?). Remember VCF isn't just a Wall, NJ thing. There is a VCF West show and a VCF Montreal show now. For your membership which is $25 a year or $100 for membership and you get 20% off events when paid through our vcf website. Does this mean that you can't participate in events? No Does it mean that you are excluded from anything? No. So to be very confusing there are paid members and non-paid members. If you are a non-paid member it means that you don't get 20% off VCF East tickets. Going forward this might change so that paid members get certain (additional) benefits and non-paid members don't get those benefits. Having paid membership brings us to the next level for our organization as well as funding to support all we do. If we were applying for a grant for example, how would we know how many members we have? How would we prove it? We are looking to renovate the 9010-B section to make a large museum space. How can we get $400,000 in funding? Through grants or corporate donations. The national board has a 5 year plan which includes a strategy to make us look like something that large corporations or grants would donate to us the money we need. Does that make sense? MAJOR SCHEDULE CHANGE FOR VCF EAST 2025

For the last two weeks I have received a lot of angry responses after releasing the Program Book. I've received a lot of complaints about having too much Amiga. This stems from the great misconception that there are too many Commodore speakers at VCF East. They all said that they wanted more Windows 95. They said that Microsoft was a much more innovative and important company than Commodore and that the Amiga wasn't an important milestone. Not knowing what to do, I called my brother-in-law who has worked at Microsoft since 1987 and told him my problem. He told me that he knew the team that did Windows 95. In fact he was part of that project. I had no idea! He said that he had to keep it secret for a while until it wasn't relevant. So he was able to get me in touch with the entire Windows 95 team and they agreed to come to our show even on short notice. They were all retired, having gotten stock very early at Microsoft and therefore are independently wealthy. So in light of this I have cancelled all the Amiga talks and will replace them with Windows 95 talks. I will also change the theme of the show and art to Windows 95. I will have to trash all the t-shirts and program books, but my brother-in-law will pay for the artist and rush changes to get new t-shirts and program books. When money is no object you can get stuff done quickly! For the Amiga fans out there, don't worry! I will be scheduling the Amiga roundtables for May 4. Take care! Jeff Brace VCF East Showrunner

VCF East 2025 Consignment Dropoff Information

We're getting really close to the event. For those who are putting items up for sale in Consignment, the link below contains important instructions for dropping off your items on Friday and Saturday evenings. VCF Consignment Dropoff <https://vcfed.org/vcf-consignment-dropoff/> Please read the instructions provided on that page as it also contains a map of the gates and how to get to this year's Consignment location on campus. But in a nutshell: *You can come in either gate on Friday from 5PM to 10PM. However, on Saturday and Sunday, you *must* come in through the side gate. You will get an orange wristband, drop off your items, and then go back out through the available gates on the respective dropoff nights (both gates on Friday, side gate only on Saturday).* *On any of these days, you will need to park, drop off, and then move your vehicle to the parking lot as quickly as possible. We have limited parking space and no one can park in front of the fire hydrant.* For reference, last year's Consignment space is highlighted on the map to show, by scale, how much more space we have available in the new Consignment location.
