Details: Look at the lever, which you rotate down to "lock" after inserting a diskette. The lower right of the photo, shows the lever, attached to a metal rod, which has three black plastic cams. I need that rod, with cams intact. If you insert a diskette and rotate the lever down, and the head's don't "stay" down and the lever flips "up" - that's broken and I don't want it. 6502 assembly hack @ next workshop

I've been spending a lot of time lately on learning more LOGO programming for the Lego/Apple II kit. It does some very cool things, but we need it to do something new. Read on... Lego made a box that communicates between the computer and their motors, sensors, and lights. The box has eight ports. Ports 0-5 are for anything. Ports 6-7 are reserved for sensors. You can talk to any port, but oddly you can only listen to ports 6-7. There is no way to tell LOGO, "What is the status of port 3?" All you can do for ports 0-7 is switch them on/off and adjust the voltage (SETPOWER command from 1 to 7 for full power). Dean has been very helpful when I have programming questions. We tried working around the limitation by making a variable, setting it to 0 or 1, and then checking the variable instead of the port when necessary. But it doesn't work (for various reasons; no need to explain them here.) I had an idea. Why can't we hack Lego's version of LOGO to add this command? Dean said it possible. Disassemble the code, identify where the ports are turned on/off, etc. .... the existing command to read ports 6-7 is LISTENTO (and also a short version LTO) so I propose a new command LISTENPORT or the short version LTP). I will bring the setup to the January workshop and Dean (and Drew) are going to work on it. Anyone who digs Apple 6502 assembly is welcome to help.

Semi-OT: Need help with adding NE2000 patch to DOSBox SVN

I'm attempting to build a version of DOSBox with NE2000 emulation support. I'm trying to build it on the Raspberry Pi 3. I'm able to successfully compile the current SVN of vanilla DOSBox on my Pi. But I don't know how to add the patch in. There are several releases out there for Windows, but always have other additional patches/features which are not needed for my project. And I'm not able to get them to build on my Pi. This is for the BBS project I'm working on. If someone could assist, I would greatly appreciate the help. Oscilloscope for sale

I have a pristine looking RCA model 825 Oscilloscope for sale. I have seen it also associated with Heathkit, so it may have been some kind of joint marketing thing; RCA service tech training and build your own service scope in a package. I haven't fired it up, but I would at a minimum bring it up on a Variac to try to re-form the electrolytics before applying full power. I might also suggest performing a visual inspection of parts inside to see if there are any resistors that look failed or near failure. This belongs to the widow of a friend of a friend. It's not worth much (< $50 ?) but she would like some money out of it. If there's any interest I can bring it to the January workshop (I think). The scope and I are in Jackson, NJ. SCELBI Oscilloscope reproduction working

I finally have completed testing the hardware for the SCELBI oscilloscope boards and have reproduction PCBs available for sale. SCELBI produced 16 different PCBs during the short time that they were selling computer hardware and I have finally finished producing working reproductions of all of them. Note that there are NO operating original SCELBI oscilloscope interfaces known to exist. In fact, the only original oscilloscope interface that I'm aware of, is in storage at the CHM. Original software drivers can't be found and I'm working on creating new drivers using the fragmentary information that is currently available. Check out my blog for more information. In this day of IoT, this could be a FUN project Martin Flynn offered > Waveware SPS-5 transmitter with 4 pagers. That should be perfect! Pagers are retro. 4 of them mean some will always be charged and ready. But the master station needs serial input from something. Let's see - a pushbutton to the Raspberry Pi running the overhead video display, which ought to have motion and distance sensors to react to folks automatically. The "call button" could respond with a video - the cavalry is coming! Or one of a random assortment of science fiction talking computers such as the talking head from The Starlost or Red Dwarf. - the big red button on the Cray - setting the PiDP-8 console switches all "on" - the Apple ][ serial port card. Evans' Lego robot could entertain them while waiting. For movie trivia, have it say "My name is Rags! Woof woof woof" :-) -- jeffj

Yes, I'm really looking forward toward January's workshop. I'm going to be working on the Atari 600xl's video and seeing if it's running. I have the Atari 800xl's Sam Compufacts pdf and I'll be working from that. I'll be bringing my scope in hopes of resurrecting the little beast. Do we have any folks that are good with analog? I'm sure I'll have questions. I have internet notes on how to improve the video so I intend to work on fixing and upgrading the 600xl's video so I can use it with the Commodore 1802 or the Composite to VGA converter I have. BoingBoing just noted how Steven Spielberg's father was a pioneer of the GE 225 mainframe. My dad mastered that machine in the early 60s, making it run efficiently under COBOL at the Girl Scouts National Headquarters. He still vividly remembers the details of the Analex printer and how using it offline saved a lot of computer time. Even the card reader had quirks. But back then, it wasn't hackers who focused on such optimization, it was every programmer and operator's job to understand such things. Ft Monmouth had some too. They were available for training courses my dad took. I hope some of those Ft. Museum wireless doorbell thingamajig

I'm looking for an innovative (read: simple and cheap) way for museum visitors to press a button in order to alert our docents who may be elsewhere, such as working in the warehouse or visiting other InfoAge exhibits. There are video doorbell products from Ring.com and others ranging from $120-$300. These have cameras connecting to smartphone apps. That way range isn't an issue and you can have video conversations. These products are awesome but expensive. What's a cheaper solution? There is no easy way to run a wire from our museum to the warehouse. Video is not necessary, but a simple "house phone" approach would work (such as in an office building or hotel) or even just a buzzer. Or maybe some kind of pager. This is a project I'd like to get done very soon, not just someday. Most of all, if people have proposals that require engineering, then we need to see "I'll do it" not "Here's what someone should do".

VCF East flyers for MAGFest?

Heya, I volunteer with a Video game music and video gaming festival called MAGFest that happens off of the DC Beltway in Maryland. It's in it's 15th year or something and brings around 20,000 people. The division I mostly deal with is arcade machines, but we spawned a computer museum section in the arcade a few years ago that now has it's own room. The guy that ran the entire event from 2nd event to 9th event is a chiptune artist who is big into retro computing and retro computing music (Inverse Phase is his chiptune name.) The computer museum is 3000 square feet and mostly plastic micros and DOS machines. Kaypro, Osbourne, etc. Some early Macs and other technology makes it on display, as well as rare and odd console gaming systems. Not exactly 1:1 with what VCF is but still it's a pretty wide audience. I actually just found out that a new Amiga documentary is being premiered at 'fest in the movie area about the Amiga and a few early Amiga people are going to be there. Anyways, if there is a flyer for VCF East in PDF form or something I'll print out a bunch and make sure they're at event so that people coming to the museum (and Arcade) learn about VCF East. 1/2 a page is best, but I also have a large format printer (36" wide) and am willing to run off a big sheet or two. The people that handle the museum room (who are also into the arcade thing) are long time friends, they actually came to VCF East 2016 with me and probably will come again to 2017. Anywho, figure I'd put it out there :-)

For decades he and his family bought up auctions and offered the items for sale in his store and at ham fests. He is a Navy veteran and work on shipboard UNIVAC computers. A number of years ago he moved out of Zerns into this warehouse. Bill has quite a bit of old electronic components, two isles, perhaps 30 feet long, full with small bins of misc parts. He also has LOT of tubes- a large closet full of them ("The tube room"). He has several rooms of old A/V media, equipment, and tube radios. Other stuff runs the gamut of typical yard sale household items to scientific gear, including at this time, an electron microscope... and an IBM System 30. And yes he has a lot of vintage microcomputer gear, including software, cables, accessories. Here's the sad part for us: Much of the pre- IBM PC computers he has were stored in outdoor semi trailers and much have sustained either fairly extreme temperature, moisture and in many cases outright water damage. That being said for some purposes the computers are useful. He tends to be "optimistic" about what things are worth, but you can always make offers. Last summer he brought out a lot of additional stored computer equipment. There is currently a lot of Apple II+s and IIe's out on pallets. The Apples and TRS-80s computers usually came from schools and have school brandings on them in some cases. There is a also room of that is a 90s computer store time capsule. A few of us locals have used trips to Kemners as a good reason to get together out here and that's been great. I'd love to have that happen with the further away folks sometime. Its entirely possible to burn half a day lost in there. If you need to bring the family on the loop, there are some not-too-far-away places of interest: Check out Saint Peter's Village and the Hopewell Furnace Rev war iron works. Museum report

I went to the museum today at 12:30 to give a tour to an out-of-town visitor who arranged it a while back. He's an EE who brought his son (home from college on winter break) who is studying to also be an EE. They spent a couple of hours with us. They brought us an EPROM burner for the workbench. I went to lunch at 3pm, came back, and the radio club guys flagged me down. They had a group of three visitors from California who wanted to see us. That group of people was also very knowledgeable and said they may have some S-100 donations for us. So, five visitors today, all extremely knowledgeable, EPROM burner for the museum, more possible donations later, and one good lunch. Glad to be there today. Oh and I had an InfoAge marketing committee meeting at 5pm which was fairly boring. :) I did learn that the sidewalk to our museum building is being converted to an ADA-compliant ramp (the law, not the language!) next spring. The IA board chairman promised me construction won't conflict with VCF East. I will stay on top of that just in case.

VCF East keynotes! Enigma, C++, 40 years of appliance computers

C++ inventor Bjarne Stroustrup, Ph.D., Enigma machine expert Tom Perera, Ph.D., and a panel discussion by computer historian Bill Degnan on the 40th anniversary of appliance computers featuring the Apple II, Commodore PET 2001, and TRS-80 Model 1 will be the keynote sessions for Vintage Computer Festival East XII, March 31-April 2, in Wall, New Jersey. The event is produced by Vintage Computer Federation (www.vcfed.org) a national user group devoted to enabling hobbyists and spreading awareness of computer history. The Federation is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Stroustrup (www.stroustrup.com) who developed the C++ programming language at Bell Labs starting in 1978, will discuss "The Origins and further Evolution of C++" on Saturday morning, April 1. He is currently a visiting professor of computer science at Columbia University and a managing director in the technology division at Morgan Stanley. His talk is sure to be an excellent follow-up to C language author and pioneer Brian Kernighan, who spoke at VCF East X in 2015. Perera's company, EnigmaMuseum.com, is in the business of hunting for, researching, restoring, and selling Enigma machines and related items. His talk, "Inside the Enigma: The history, technology and deciphering of an early laptop computer and the real story of the Imitation Game" will be presented Friday, March 31 after lunch. The World War II German Enigma was arguably an original form of laptop computer. This talk will explain the history and technology of the Enigma and link it to the movie "Imitation Game" which tells the story of the cracking of the German Navy Enigma code and the extraordinary contributions of mathematician Alan Turing to this endeavor. In order to keep the audience interested and involved, the movie has allowed some inaccuracies and omissions in the history and technology and in the masterful portrayal of the eccentric mathematician Alan Turing by Benedict Cumberbatch. This talk will trace the actual story of the Enigma and the cracking of the Enigma Code and attempt to fill in some of the Enigmatic aspects of Alan Turing's personality. Perera will also give a more technical demonstration of how the machines work and a real-time disassembly of an Enigma in a separate session that day. He will give further demonstrations and will offer for sale his Enigmas, Enigma simulators, other historic cipher machines, books, Enigma Library CD-ROM, and related items on Saturday and Sunday. Perera was formerly a professor of neuroscience at Columbia University, Barnard College, and Montclair State University. Degnan (www.vintagecomputer.net) is a co-founder of the Mid-Atlantic chapter of Vintage Computer Federation, a professional programmer and web developer, and formerly taught computer history at the University of Delaware. At his panel, "1977: The year of the appliance computer" you'll learn about the launch of the Apple II, Commodore PET 2001, and Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 1. Bill will guide the discussion to explore how the appliance computer facilitated the expansion of computers as an appliance into small businesses, schools, and the home. Panelists will be separated into three groups each representing the Apple, Commodore, and Tandy/Radio Shack perspective. The panel will respond to questions and share their knowledge and personal experiences. The discussion will continue from 1977 through the milestones of 1980s 8-bit appliance and home computing. All three sessions will be 90 minutes which includes audience Q&A. Further details will be shared as the event nears.

Here are things we still need for the modern history exhibit: - Small calendar - Standalone address book - Dictionary - Navigational compass - Any handheld game console - Photo album - Ordinary telephone We need these things sooner rather than later. All should be straightforward and on the small side -- nothing weird or large, please. :)

Really busy day at the museum. I honestly lost count/improperly tracked the number of people, but it was easily 20+. Most of them were there for the Model Train Exhibit. Quite a few had previously seen our exhibit in the prior location. Interest levels varied from low to high. I even walked someone through signing up for the local chapter mailing list. I filled in a few details about the club side of things and gave them a tour. :) There were quite a few other visitors, all of which I'd classify as "low to medium" levels of interest. One gentleman was there with his daughter (?) whom was a bit impatient, so I gave him a relatively quick tour. He was very interested, but she was not. I also took in a donation of some Tektronix gear. See ya! -Todd

IA opened at noon today for the train show. I didn't get there until 1:30 because of the weather. We had about 15-20 people come through. Pretty good condering the river of slush between our building door and the front building.
